    2023 Alpine A110 R: Track-focused sports car teased

Alpine is giving internal-combustion power one last hoorah before it steps into its new electric era.

The French sports carmaker has teased a “radical” and “extreme” version of its A110 coupe with a range of design sketch-style images and short videos on its social media.

Dubbed the Alpine A110 R, this new track-focused variant of the coupe will be unveiled on October 4 at 8:30pm AEST in Japan during the Suzuki F1 Grand Prix weekend. It will then be shown off at the 2022 Paris motor show which kicks off on October 17.

Alpine has said the A110 R has been designed as the “ultimate expression of lightness and performance”, while remaining road-legal.

These teaser photos Alpine uploaded to social media seem to include all the different body elements that are included or added to the A110 R to make it lighter and more aerodynamic.

These teased body and design elements include a front splitter with a lightweight bonnet that has ducts and vents on it, beefy brakes and suspension components, different wheels, lightweight roof, side skirts, and a large rear wing with a rear diffuser.

There also appears to be racing seats with a six-point harness in the track-focused Alpine A110 R, according to the teaser images.

The short teaser videos also give us fleeting audio clips of the A110 R starting up and under hard acceleration.

It’s unclear what alterations Alpine has made to the A110 R’s engine, but the entire range is currently powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine positioned behind the passenger compartment.

It’s mated to a wet seven-sped dual-clutch transmission with drive sent to the rear wheels.

Thanks to a recent update that’s available in other markets, the 1.8-litre mill in the GT and S trims produces 221kW of power and 340Nm of torque. That’s 6kW and 20Nm more than the base model.

It’s highly unlikely the track-focused Alpine A110 R will be sold locally as the company withdrew the regular A110 from the Australian market in late 2021 as it doesn’t conform to the latest side-impact design rules.

Alpine is planning on going all-electric by the middle of the decade and recently showed off its A110 E-ternité “rolling laboratory” concept which uses same battery modules as the Renault Megane E-Tech.

This Alpine A110 E-ternité rolling lab concept is powered by an electric motor producing 178kW and 300Nm and is mated to a two-speed dual-clutch transmission, with drive sent to the rear wheels.

The brand plans to reveal an electric replacement for the current A110 mid-decade which will be built in partnership with British sports car specialist Lotus, using the brand’s new E-Sport electric platform.

Alpine is also planning to launch a high-performance electric crossover called the GT X-Over, and a hotter version of the upcoming Renault 5 EV. All three of these EVs will be launched by 2026.

It’s unclear at this stage if Alpine will return to the Australian market with its upcoming electric vehicles at this stage.

A spokesperson from Ateco, Renault’s Australian distributor, said in October 2021 that when the new models are revealed in full, the product planning team will then assess if they will be brought to the Australian market.
