5 Bay Area restaurants with fantastic oyster bars and chilled seafood

Warm weather, cold seafood – is there any better summer-dining combination? Add in a glass of something nice and a waterfront view, and you have the perfect moment. Here are a few of the Bay’s eateries that excel in raw or chilled seafood.

Lake Chalet, Oakland

That old chestnut about not eating summer oysters isn’t really true anymore, thanks to modern farming practices and smarter species selection. A great place to enjoy them on warm evenings is the Lake Chalet on Lake Merritt. During happy hour, those oysters are a buck apiece and handily washed down with local beer. The raw bar is stocked with fat prawns and seafood deviled eggs, which diners can enjoy on a deck overlooking the lake’s duckies and bat rays.
Open for lunch and dinner daily, brunch on weekends, with happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1520 Lakeside Drive in Oakland; thelakechalet.com.

Longport Fish Co., Concord

Was there ever a dish built more to impress than the seafood tower, with its impossible scaffolding of briny delicacies priced like a monthly cable package? Chef-owner Nicholas diArenzo prepares super-fresh towers with king crab, littleneck clams and Maine lobster while adding twists like shrimp ceviche and kombu mignonette. Some come with mysteriously unspecified “cool stuff from kitchen,” and there’s even a brunch version with bagels and house-smoked salmon.
Opens at 11 a.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends at 2015 Diamond Blvd. in Concord; longportfc.com.

New England Lobster Co., Burlingame

Delicious decapods from Maine are the star at this airy restaurant and seafood market. The lobster rolls have a quarter-pound of meat and are dressed with mayo or butter-only, served simply with coleslaw and chips. There’s a sunny patio to consume clams on the half-shell and Shrimp Louie, which can be paired with chilled fume blanc or a spiked-blueberry lemonade.
Opens at 11 a.m. daily at 824 Cowan Road in Burlingame; newenglandlobster.net.
