An insider’s guide to the Downtown Aquarium in Houston

The next time you’re looking for a fun outing for the entire family, consider Houston’s Downtown Aquarium. The impressive six-acre entertaining and dining complex that was redeveloped to combine two Houston landmarks—Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks Building—showcases over 300 species of sea life from around the world.

Whether you arrive with a clear plan and download the map ahead of time, or you simply want to stroll and enjoy the views as you go, we’ve put together a guide to the Houston Aquarium—from can’t-miss exhibits and thrilling rides and games to a train ride through a tunnel filled with sharks.

    See exciting exhibits

The Downtown Aquarium offers eight exhibits, each one different from the next. In the Texas Bayou exhibit, you may spot alligators, bullfrogs and turtles; while in the Shipwreck exhibit, you can literally step inside a 17th-century Spanish galleon. Don’t be surprised when you see a giant octopus, clownfish and groupers.

Other exciting exhibits to not miss: Rainforest, Sunken Temple, Underwater Rig and Discovery Zone, where you may come face-to-face with electric eels and seahorses. At Tigers of the Maharaja’s Temple, you’ll behold real tigers lounging and frolicking among the ancient temple’s ruins; while the Stingray Reef exhibit gives you the opportunity to touch and feed stingrays.

Experience thrilling amusement rides and carnival games

Think of a visit to this aquarium as an extravaganza, since it also offers a variety of carnival-style games and amusement rides.

Those who dare to ride Lighthouse Dive can drop 65-feet while grabbing a glimpse of downtown Houston’s skyline. For those seeking a tamer view of the skyline, The Diving Bell Ferris Wheel takes visitors 100 feet up into the air. Got a crew of who want to stay closer to the ground? Hop on the Aqua Wheel, a mini version of the Ferris wheel geared for kids.

The Shark Voyage train takes riders through a tunnel under a 200,000-gallon shark tank.

Visitors can also get a unique view of shark species on the Shark Voyage train ride which takes riders through the center of a 200,000-gallon shark tank. Once you exit the train, kids can hop onto the back of a dolphin or an alligator on the Aquatic Carousel.

Good to know: Most aquarium rides have height requirements of 42 inches (and require children to be accompanied by an adult), but little ones who are 36 inches tall can leap right on the Frog Hopper ride.

    Participate in educational programs

Camps and daytime and overnight programs at Houston Aquarium provide children with opportunities to learn more about the underwater world. For instance, in the Marine Biologist for a Day program, children (ages 6-12) can go behind the scenes and experience close encounters with exotic species and then dissect a squid. The program includes a guided tour, biologist dive show, squid dissection and animal feedings.

Other fun educational programs include Animal Meet and Greets, Zoologist for a Day, Wild Dreams Overnight (essentially, a sleepover), a weekly Sea Safari summer camp and Working on the Wild Side, which takes teens behind the scenes to learn about animal care, conservation and the aquarium industry.

Prices vary for each opportunity and reservations must be made in advance. The aquarium also offers school and scout programs such as field trips.

Find unique souvenirs in the Treasure Chest gift shop

All paths lead to the gift shop. Whether you’re looking for apparel, home décor or stuffed animals, you’ll find great gifts and souvenirs throughout the aquatic-themed merchandise.

Dine with eels, groupers and more at the Aquarium Restaurant

A visit to Houston Aquarium isn’t complete without enjoying the Aquarium restaurant, which is true to its theme. As you dine in front of a 150,000-gallon aquarium, you’ll be accompanied by over 100 species of aquatic life. Creatures such as moray eels and giant groupers will swim by your table as you feast on variety of fare, including seafood specialties, chicken, steak, salad, pasta and dessert.

If a sit-down dining experience isn’t in your plans or you’d prefer to enjoy an upscale bar for pre- or post-dinner drinks, head to the Dive Lounge. It’s the is ideal place to relax during a visit.

For instance, a holiday weekend may offer a special for a four-day pass, and special events such as breakfast with Santa or the Easter Bunny or Mother’s Day brunch will elevate your visit to the aquarium.

Tickets: There are various passes and add-on ticket options depending on which parts of the aquarium you’d like to visit and which attractions you’d like to enjoy.
