Australian rental crisis: single mother Sharon Westin shares rental pain

A single mother of two has been forced to move 40 times as she struggles to keep a roof over her family’s head in Australia’s rental crisis.

Sharon Westin, 46, lives in a three-bedroom rental with her two teenage sons in the Melbourne suburb of Chadstone.

Sharon said she is unable to afford to buy her own home because of the ongoing costs of renting.

The mother is in her 40th home after a turbulent six years that began when an old landlord gave her then-rental to a son as a wedding present.

“I still don’t feel like it’s my home,” Sharon told NCA NewsWire on Monday.

She said her current $540 per week rental, which she moved into seven weeks ago, had already flooded and the piping had begun to leak.

Sharon said she had no option but bear the state of her house after getting repeatedly moved-on from homes that landlords decided to abruptly sell or dramatically hike the rent.

“The financial stress is one thing – it’s had an enormous impact on my health,” she said.

“After the last time our lease was terminated I got shingles, then I got Covid, then I got a chest infection.

“My whole body was shaking for days. I just couldn’t function,” Sharon, who owns her own small graphic design business, said.

“I’m sure it was just my body crying out for some rest,” she said.

Sharon told NCA NewsWire that one of her experiences included signing a two-year rental agreement, only for the landlord to give her a notice to vacate after nine months, while in a previous rental she was required to open the family home up for inspections for an entire year when the owners decided to sell.

“I don’t know what the answer is. I don’t have time to think about it,” she said.

Recent data shows Sharon’s struggle to find stable accommodation is one confronting many Australians.

    RENTAL MARKET

Inquiries into listings in Australian capital cities has surged in 2023, according to PropTrack, however the rental supply remains at a historic low.

According to PropTrack inquiries per listing in capital cities have increased more than 31 per cent.

Median weekly rents have increased more than $110 in parts of Melbourne since interest rates began to rise last year, according to realestate.com.au, while the city’s rental vacancy rate dipped below two per cent.

There are also growing concerns that rental bidding is on the up in capital cities, in addition to it becoming increasingly common for prospective tenants to offer higher-than-advertised prices to agents and landlords.
