Coles self-serve checkout trolley hack shocks customers

Coles has been forced to install signs at its self-service checkouts after shoppers failed to notice a helpful feature for trolleys.

A savvy supermarket shopper spotted a sticker at the bagging area which highlighted an easier way for customers to unload their trolleys while scanning their groceries.

In a video filmed at a Coles store in South Australia, the woman can be seen sliding her trolley into the spot where your basket would typically go.

She had been using one of the smaller trolleys, intended for quick shops around the supermarket and was amazed after seeing the Coles self-serve bay had a sticker that read: “Park your trolley here.”

The woman captioned the video: “When you discover where the trolley is supposed to go at self checkouts instead of being in everyone’s way.”

Social media users were stunned by the revelation, with one declaring they would try this during their next shop.

One said: “I must have missed that during my self checkout employee orientation.”

Another added: “WHAAAAAAA? I’m freaking 45 years old and just learned this! I’m gonna try it.

“Love Coles. I’m from the USA but loved going here when I visited Brisbane,” another said.

One added: “OMG there’s a sticker right there that says, ‘Park your trolley here.’”

The video has garnered more than 3.4 million views and over 1200 comments.

Similar videos have gone viral in the past, but many still seem to be learning the information for the first time.

In 2021, Coles confirmed it was making the change nationally, with the updated checkouts sporting the “park your trolley here” stickers.

“Coles is making it easier for customers to use trolleys in our self checkout area by lowering the basket shelf so our smaller trolleys can fit right over the top,” a spokeswoman for the supermarket said at the time.

“This saves space and means customers can quickly scan products from their trolley and place them directly into their bags.”

But Coles isn’t the only supermarket offering the checkout feature.

Last November, Woolworths employee Liam Kirley, a former store worker who now runs the supermarket’s TikTok page, shared a video explaining how the same trolley hack works at Woolies.

TikTok user @EbonyHit was the first to go viral with the revelation that smaller trolleys could fit in Woolies self-serve checkouts.

Her video, posted in April 2020, saw her labelled “Australian of the year”, with one commenter declaring: “My whole world has changed.”
