Domestic passenger loads hit record high despite disruptions

The percentage of flights with full loads travelling around Australia hit its highest level in July since records began in 1984 as the industry continues to recover from its pandemic woes.

The latest data from Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional economics (BITRE) shows the July domestic passenger load figure landing at 85.8 per cent, beating the previous 2019 record of 84.5 per cent.

Airlines have been forced to reduce capacity this year in an attempt to keep up with record demand while hampered by insufficient staff levels and an array of operational failures. While travel demand returned to pre-pandemic levels in July, passengers had to contend with high cancellation rates, service delays and long queues at airports.

The routes with the least available seats during the peak holiday period were Cairns to Melbourne, Gold Coast to Melbourne and Adelaide to Gold Coast, with average load factors of 95.2 per cent, 95 per cent and 94.6 per cent respectively. Melbourne to Sydney is one of the most popular domestic routes in the world, carrying 4.2 million people in 2022, followed by Brisbane to Sydney which carried 2 million.

The onset of the pandemic lockdowns sent load factors plummeting to less than 30 per cent in April 2020.

The insatiable demand for travel is not limited to Australia. New data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents 290 airlines, shows total air traffic globally has risen to 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, international traffic for August lagged slightly behind at 68 per cent year-on-year.

The region with the highest passenger load was North America, with a 145 per cent increase in August year-on-year, a capacity increase of 72 per cent and a load factor of 87 per cent. North America’s airlines were followed by the European carriers, where August traffic climbed 79 per cent year-on-year, with a capacity increase of 48 per cent and a passenger load factor of 85.5 per cent.

“Considering the prevailing economic uncertainties, travel demand is progressing well,” IATA director general Willie Walsh said, adding the removal of travel restrictions in areas, including Japan, will accelerate Asia’s recovery.

China is the last major market retaining severe COVID-19 entry restrictions. Asia-Pacific airlines had a 449 per cent rise in traffic compared to August 2021, with a capacity increase of 167 per cent. The numbers are expected to soar once China eases its pandemic restrictions.
