Happy Valley viewers are certain Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) is linked to another character in what would be another blow for Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire).

The no-nonsense copper was stunned to learn that her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) had been paying visits to his vile father, who is currently serving time behind bars for murder.

Catherine blames Tommy for her daughter Becky’s death as she killed herself shortly after he brutally raped her.

Dumbstruck as to why Ryan would want a relationship with the criminal, Catherine was shook when she learned he had two accomplices, who have been accompanying the teen to prison.

Episode two contained the explosive revelation that Catherine’s very own sister Clare Cartwright (Siobahn Finneran) and boyfriend Neil Ackroyd (Con O’Neill) were the culprits.

Rather than confront her family outright, Catherine instead opted to trail the trio to Sheffield to confirm with her own eyes that the illicit visits had been happening before plonking herself beside her shocked sister in a cafe.

But fans have been speculating that there could be a hidden reason as to why Neil and Clare have been taking Ryan to see Tommy behind Catherine’s back, believing Neil is related to the psychopath.

Many fans on Twitter have theorised that Neil is in fact Tommy’s father, explaining why he was willing to orchestrate the visits.Other

Several viewers also pointed out that in a previous season of Happy Valley, Catherine was hell-bent on finding out who Tommy’s father was, but the answer was never revealed.

Others also recalled that Neil had ‘bumped’ into Clare on the street previously before they struck up their relationship, believing it could now in fact have been a premeditated move.

‘Neil definitely has connections to Tommy. I don’t think he bumped into Claire in the street by accident either,’ a viewer summed it up.

A Twitter user added: ‘I recalled these bits from the 2nd season: Police never found the killer of TLR’s mother, did they? Did Neil relapse because of his past costly affair, or because of TLR’s mother’s murder? With @spiceyw’s writing, there’s never a coincidence. #happyvalley.’

Siobahn has previously teased what fans can expect from episode 3 on This Morning, warning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield there will be a lot to take in.

She said: ‘All I can really say about that is I think you’re gonna have to fasten your seatbelts for episode three.’

Elsewhere, Happy Valley’s return after seven years has been a huge triumph, even beating viewing figures for Prince Harry’s bombshell interview on ITV with Tom Bradbury on Sunday night.

Happy Valley continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
