Hate, struggle & survival collide in winning refugee drama ‘Jacir’

    MOVIE REVIEW

    “Jacir”

Not Rated. In English and Arabic with subtitles. At the AMC Boston Common, AMC South Bay and suburban theaters.

    Grade: B+

A “Gran Torino”-style drama with Lorraine Bracco as the racist next-door neighbor, “Jacir” is the feature film debut of Jordanian-born, American writer-director Waheed AlQawasmi. The film tells the story of Syrian refugee Jacir (Lebanese actor Malek Rahbani), living on his own in Memphis (the film’s tagline is “From Aleppo to the Ghetto”) in squalid circumstances. Jacir’s entire family was killed in Syria during the ongoing war. He lives alone, tormented by violent dreams and by his neighbor “Miss Meryl” (Bracco), a drunk and addict, who has a tragic history of her own and expresses racist sentiments towards Jacir, especially when her “traitor” cat shows him affection.

Jacir has no means of transportation and like many Syrian refugees has a college degree. He must walk a long distance from his apartment to get to work, where he is the dishwasher at the falafel shop of an abusive Arabic owner named Adam (Tony Mehanna). Adam is not happy that his rebellious adult daughter Nadia (Leila Almas Rose) has taken an interest in newcomer Jacir and tried to befriend him. Also befriending Jacir is the shop’s effusive cook Jerome (YouTube star Darius “Tutweezy” Tutwiler). Jerome, who learns from Jacir that Adam has been calling him the N-word in Arabic, sees himself in the struggling Jacir and extends a helping hand. Jerome teaches Jacir the word “gwab” (slang for money). He advises Jacir not to wear a Trump t-shirt in the ‘hood, and most importantly Jerome gives Jacir a used bicycle to get around more easily. Miss Meryl is a harder nut to crack. She is a “Karen” of the worst order. She refers to Jacir’s native language Arabic as “gibberish.”

Jacir, who likes listening to Arabic rap on headphones, takes classes in English. But his command of the language remains minimal. Two masked men break into Meryl’s home and try to run off with her purse. Jacir fights with them, retrieving the purse and pushing one man through a wooden fence. An immigration officer named Simmons (Mark Jeffrey Miller) appears to remind Jacir that he is being watched and that if he gets into any trouble he can easily be deported. We learn that Jacir was very happily married in Syria, but that his wife, whom we see in flashbacks, was killed.

In a development familiar to fans of to “Hustle & Flow,” Jerome is an aspiring rapper, who performs at a local club and whose work has serious potential. After rescuing Meryl from an overdose by taking her to the hospital in her car, Jacir cleans her place up, throwing most of her pills away.

Bracco (“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”) does not make the eventual warming up of Jacir and Meryl easy or fast. Although we know their rapprochement is coming, it takes more than a while. A plot development involving Meryl’s career as a singer seems like padding, although it gives Meryl and Jacir a chance to dress up for a night out. Bracco and Rahbani have an interesting rapport. His Jacir dislikes her Meryl as much as her “Karen” despises him. Bracco’s decision to work with a first-time filmmaker speaks to her confidence in Memphis resident writer-director AlQawasmi, who makes consistently intelligent choices. Almas Rose is especially smart and winning as the rebellious daughter Nadia. Shot on location in Memphis, “Jacir” might signal the start of a noteworthy career.

(“Jacir” contains profanity, racial slurs and drug use)
