Hugh Grant and his wife Anna Eberstein have been applauded for their generosity after donating £10,000 to a cost of living fundraiser.

The Love Actually actor’s donation was revealed by non-profit community organisation Depher, which has set up a GoFundMe appeal to help raise money towards supporting the elderly, vulnerable and disabled people who are struggling financially amid the cost of living crisis.

On Friday, new Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng announced the biggest tax rate cut in 50 years, costing the Treasury £45billion over the next five years. His measures include scrapping the top rate of income tax for the highest earners, adding restrictions to the welfare system and axing the cap on bankers’ bonuses.

However, charities have slammed the measures arguing they will be detrimental to the UK’s poorest families while instead benefiting the wealthy.

Following the news, it has been revealed that Hollywood actor Hugh, 62, and his wife Anna have dug into their pockets and donated towards the fundraiser set up by Depher.

James Anderson, founder of the organisation, told PA: ‘This has come when we need it the most, many lives will be saved because of their generosity and support.

‘This donation will put food on tables and warmth in the hearts of hundreds and thousands who are dealing with the cost-of-living crisis and poverty.’

According to Anderson, Hugh and Anna have donated a total of £55,000 to the organisation since October 2021, praising their kindness as ‘humbling and heavenly’.

In June, the Bridget Jones’ Diary actor was nicknamed ‘Jesus’ by Anderson after he made a generous donation to Depher.

‘If I could rename Jesus, I would call him Hugh. We’ve now (got) a free boiler for a 94-year-old lady because of Hugh,’ Anderson said.

‘There’s another lady who has a brain tumour, (she) and her husband haven’t had heating or hot water for 17 months and now they will get a new boiler … because of Hugh.’

He added: ‘It’s not that it helps towards or makes life a little bit easier – it actually saves lives.’

Anderson previously said that he was hoping to have Depher operating in every town and city in the UK.

Hugh and Anna have been married since 2018 and share three children, the first of who was born in 2012. The actor also has two children with ex Tinglan Hong.
