MarketInk: KPBS Radio Names Matt Hoffman as Permanent ‘Roundtable’ Host

KPBS has named Matt Hoffman as permanent host of “KPBS Roundtable,” a weekly 30-minute show featuring local journalists discussing recent stories affecting the San Diego region. Hoffman has been Roundtable’s interim host for the past year.

“I’ve long admired the ‘KPBS Roundtable’ as a platform for thoughtful deliberation on the most pressing issues facing our local communities,” Hoffman said. “I couldn’t be more excited to continue this tradition for our audience and connect listeners with the best journalism in San Diego.”

Hoffman started at KPBS as a part-time newsroom assistant in 2013 and worked in the newsroom until he graduated from San Diego State University in 2017. As an SDSU student, Hoffman served as general manager of KCR, the student-operated radio station. In 2016, under Hoffman’s reign, KCR was named the best college station in the nation by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.

In August 2017, Hoffman was hired as a KPBS general assignment reporter and was later named health reporter in April 2021. As “Roundtable” host, he also will maintain his health reporter role.

Hoffman previously worked at NBC San Diego as a writer and editor for the weekend morning shows. Prior to joining KPBS as a reporter, he interned at San Diego sports-talk stations KLSD-AM XTRA Sports 1360-AM and XEPRS 1090-AM, The Mightier 1090 ESPN Radio.

“Matt is a natural storyteller and enthusiastic host whose commitment to the KPBS newsroom mission is evident in the work he does every day,” Megan Burke, KPBS senior producer, said in a statement. “As a host, he always has the listener in mind as he prepares for and leads conversations about big stories that impact San Diego.”

“KPBS Roundtable,” which airs Fridays at 12:30 p.m., debuted as “Editors’ Roundtable” in September 1998 with Gloria Penner as host. The show began airing as a TV program in 2013, but ceased production during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. KPBS 89.5-FM is San Diego’s National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate with studios at San Diego State University.
