‘Saturday Night Live’ hilariously spoofs Southwest meltdown

It was high time “Saturday Night Live” spoofed the historic Southwest meltdown that upended thousands of travelers’ plans over the holidays — and the show delivered with one of its funniest commercial parodies to date.

The sketch that aired during last weekend’s episode began with a treacly piano accompaniment as cast members Heidi Gardner and Devon Walker offered up a halfhearted apology on behalf of the airline.

“Over the holiday season, we messed up,” Gardner said, portraying fictional air concierge Rachel Dougherty. “Our system collapsed, and thousands of flyers were left stranded. And you understandably screamed at us for days on end. Even more than you usually do.”

Not to worry — Southwest is rolling out “a better, more modern experience.”

The commercial went on to skewer the airline’s internal technology system by promising to upgrade to 2008 Dell computers, a step above its previously used 2002 ThinkPad laptops “with the little red nipple in the middle.” (Those computers will now be used for the airline’s modernized air traffic control network instead of a pen and paper.)

Southwest also unveiled a new premier lounge for its valued customers — a few tables inside of an active Starbucks, as flagship lounge floor captain Donald Sparks (host Michael B. Jordan) proudly announced — and vowed to streamline check-in by “not having one at all,” per ramp agent Meghan O’Niel (Punkie Johnson).

Thanks to the refurbished system, the pilots even get a few perks, too.

“Now I get a proper flight schedule instead of finding out where I’m going 15 minutes before takeoff,” captain Tom Wilkime (James Austin Johnson) said with a chuckle.

In the end, the airline owned up to its faults but didn’t quite take full accountability.

“Let’s keep it real,” Gardner said. “You bought the ticket. Again, you bought a Southwest ticket. You obviously don’t respect yourself, so why should we?”

    Watch the full clip below:

The segment was released as the real Southwest faces a class-action lawsuit and the threat of a pilots’ strike. In a statement released earlier this month, CEO Bob Jordan said the airline was “emerging from some of the most challenging days in our Company’s history,” emphasizing that “virtually all” passengers’ checked bags that had piled up in airports had been returned and that “nearly all” refunds had been issued to passengers who requested them. Jordan said Southwest is also still “processing tens of thousands of reimbursement requests a day.”
