Seattle ranked best city to keep New Year’s resolutions

Although we’re only a few days into the new year, luck seems to be on our side.

Seattle is the best city in the country for keeping New Year’s resolutions, according to a WalletHub study.

The study compared more than 180 cities based on more than 50 critieria that it said indicate how easy it is to keep resolutions.

The criteria spanned five key resolution categories: health, finances, school and work, bad habits and relationships.

The study also compared metrics like exercise opportunities, job satisfaction, housing affordability and a city’s number of nightlife and dining establishments.

Seattle ranked the best city overall with a score of 67.37. Seattle also ranked within the top 10 cities for relationship, financial and health resolutions, but much lower for bad-habit and school and work resolutions, the analysis found.

San Francisco ranked second overall (67.15), followed by Scottsdale, Arizona (65.22), Salt Lake City (64.92) and Overland Park, Kansas (64.82).

But even though luck may be on our side, resolutions can still be hard to keep.

“If you live in a neighborhood with no sidewalks or fitness centers nearby, for example, you may not feel as encouraged to exercise. The same goes if most of your restaurant options are limited to fast food — you may be less likely to eat healthy,” WalletHub said in its report.

Here are some ways to focus on smaller goals throughout the year, plus tips for keeping resolutions from the Better Business Bureau:

  • Prioritize rest. Resting can mean having a slow and intentional morning routine, taking a nap, drinking a cup of tea, not thinking about work or other responsibilities as you’re doing a leisure activity, spending time with loved ones, or taking a walk.
  • Declutter your space. Use “spring cleaning” to get rid of expired foods, unworn clothes and even items that can be composted or upcycled.
  • Start budgeting. Creating a written budget and tracking spending is one of the best ways to save money in the new year. You can also save money by giving up morning coffee or cooking at home instead of getting takeout. Factor in any alternate income that you can think of, like selling unused items or part-time work.
  • Take your workout outdoors. Research shows that working out in nature can motivate you to get moving, improve your mental health and provide a feeling of escapism from everyday life. Check out these six steps to build an exercise habit.
  • Avoid spending money on unethical businesses or scams. When making a purchase or choosing a business related to your new goals, be sure to check your resources. Making careful decisions now can save time, money and headaches later.
  • Romanticize your daily life — even the small moments. This could look like cooking yourself a nourishing meal, going on a daily walk regardless of how busy your work schedule is, saying “no” more often or setting clear boundaries with others.
