The Canadian government has refused the latest request for an apology to British children abused in the country.

Campaigners for youngsters shipped to Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries have petitioned the country’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to apologise for their mistreatment.

His government has declined – a decision campaigners have said “compounds the historical injustice”.

About 115,000 youngsters, so-called British Home Children, were sent to Canada from the UK between 1869 and 1948.

They were typically used as cheap labour on farms or as domestic servants and many were subject to mistreatment and abuse.

The UK and Australia have issued formal apologies for their roles in the transport of British children into punishing circumstances overseas and petitioners asked Canada to do the same.

In responding, the Canadian government said: “It is generally agreed that [the children’s] living and working conditions were poorly supervised in Canada, leaving the children vulnerable to abuse and prejudice.”

    Canada’s British ‘Home Children’

However, the response contained no apology which has infuriated petition organisers.

Lori Oschefski, of British Home Children Canada, told Sky News: “By rejecting an apology, the government not only overlooks the enduring trauma suffered by these individuals and the intergenerational trauma passed down to their some four million descendants, but also fails to demonstrate a commitment to rectifying historical wrongs.

“For a nation to move forward, it is imperative to confront and learn from its historical missteps, and the current refusal to apologise for the mistreatment of the British Home Children reflects a disheartening lack of progress in this critical aspect of Canada’s historical consciousness and compounds the historical injustice, perpetuating a narrative of neglect and indifference towards the victims of this reprehensible chapter in Canadian history.”

In its response to the petition, the Canadian government highlighted its initiatives to recognise the experience of Home Children, including the adoption in 2017 by its House of Commons of an apology to the British Home Children and their descendants.

Campaigners point out that it falls short of the formal apology they want, of the sort made by the UK and Australia.

LONDON – The British government is planning to establish an independent football regulator to oversee the sport and encourage financial stability via a bill introduced in parliament on March 19.

The regulator will be independent of government and football authorities with the power to fine clubs up to 10 per cent of their turnover for non-compliance with financial regulations, the government said in a press release.

The legislation will strengthen tests of the suitability for those running clubs and would also block “closed-shop competitions” such as the frequently proposed European Super League.

Clubs will also be obliged to consult fans over matters such as strategic direction and anything that impacts their heritage.

“For too long some clubs have been abused by unscrupulous owners who get away with financial mismanagement, which at worst can lead to complete collapse,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

“This bill is a historic moment for football fans – it will make sure their voices are front and centre, prevent a breakaway league, protect the financial sustainability of clubs, and protect the heritage of our clubs big and small.”

The government announcement comes after the Premier League last week failed to agree a new financial settlement with the English Football League (EFL), which runs the professional game in lower tiers.

The government had warned the Premier League in February that it needed to reach an agreement for a new deal or have one imposed on it.

    Future growth

The Premier League said it would study the bill.

“We agree it is vital that football clubs are sustainable, remain at the heart of their communities and that fans are fundamental to the game,” the league said in a statement.

“(But we are) mindful that the future growth of the Premier League is not guaranteed, we remain concerned about any unintended consequences of legislation that could weaken the competitiveness and appeal of English football.”

    The EFL welcomed the bill.

“We hope (it) will be an important milestone to help us secure the long-term financial sustainability of England’s football pyramid,” chairman Rick Parry said in a news release.

“The establishment of the independent football regulator will be at the heart of this reform, and we are encouraged that the regulator will be given backstop powers to deliver financial redistributions should the game be unable to agree a deal itself.”

David Sullivan, the owner of Premier League club West Ham United, said he was opposed to the establishment of a regulator and suggested it would be expensive and inefficient.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world so why change a winning formula?” he told Sky News.

“I hope the government don’t wreck something that works. This means we will be competing with teams from leagues in Europe who give a fraction of the money Premier League clubs give to both the EFL and grassroots football.

“If over the coming seasons the Premier League ceases to be the best league in the world, it will be down to an interfering government.” REUTERS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An $11 billion acquisition that backfired on Silicon Valley pioneer Hewlett Packard more than a decade ago will be resurrected Monday during a trial that will explore whether the deal was an illegal rip-off or a case of botched management.

The criminal trial in San Francisco federal court revolves around HP’s acquisition of British software maker Autonomy, a deal that was celebrated as coup when it was announced in 2011, only to blow up into a costly debacle.

Before HP wrapped up the deal, Meg Whitman was hired to be CEO of the company started 85 years ago by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard in a Palo Alto, California, garage that has become a Silicon Valley shrine.

Whitman, who rose to fame and fortune while running online commerce site eBay in its formative years, had hoped the Autonomy deal would bolster her efforts to lift HP out of the doldrums, but instead it became an albatross that dragged the company down.

As HP’s fortunes continued to sag, Whitman laid off thousands of workers and eventually engineered a breakup that split the storied company into two entities in 2015. She stepped down as CEO of the spun-off company, Hewlett Packard Enterprises in 2018.

The alleged villains in the trial are former Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch, who once was lionized as shining example of British ingenuity, and Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former vice president of finance. They are both defending themselves against 16 felony counts of fraud and conspiracy in a trial expected to run until late May or June and include testimony from more than 40 witnesses.

If convicted on all counts by a jury, Lynch and Chamberlain each could face a sentence of more than 20 years in federal prison.

Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was sentenced to five years in prison in 2019 after being convicted on 16 criminal counts of fraud and conspiracy.

The trial targeting Lynch and Chamberlain is also expected to cast a spotlight on Whitman, who dipped into her estimated fortune of $3 billion to finance an unsuccessful campaign to become California governor as the Republican Party nominee in 2010.

Not long after that political setback, Whitman joined HP’s board and then was tapped to replace company CEO Leo Apotheker, who had negotiated the Autonomy acquisition before being replaced in September 2011 just before the deal was completed.

At the time, HP was struggling to remain relevant amid a technological shift to mobile computing being driven by the then-rising popularity of smartphones. The upheaval depressed demand for desktop and laptop computers, a market that had been one of HP’s financial cornerstones. In an effort to lessen its dependence on PCs, HP snapped up Autonomy to gain ownership of software focused on helping businesses quickly sift through vital information stored in email, phone records and other repositories.

But HP uncovered evidence that Autonomy had been cooking the books to inflate its value after the takeover was completed, prompting Whitman to write off nearly $9 billion of the acquisition price. It would also spur accusations of criminal conduct, leading to the indictment of Lynch and Chamberlain in 2018.

The trial was delayed during a civil trial about the alleged fraud in London that culminated in a judge siding with HP in a 2022 ruling that indicated the damages would be less than the $5 billion (3.9 billion pounds) that HP wanted. The final amount of damages hasn’t been determined.

Lynch, 58, was extradited to the U.S. last May, and has since been living under court-mandated restrictions in San Francisco while being allowed to remain out of prison on $100 million bail bond secured by $50 million in cash while awaiting trial. Court documents estimate that Lynch made more than $800 million on Autonomy’s sale to HP.

In the London civil trial, Lynch maintained he never participated in any underhanded dealings at Autonomy and painted himself as a scapegoat for a bumbling management team led by Whitman, who he depicted as being “out of her depth.” Lynch also hailed Autonomy as “one of the most successful companies England has ever produced.”

Whitman, 67, denigrated Lynch as an unstable executive whose complaints about her decisions “became less and less focused and grounded in reality” before she ousted him from HP in 2012. Now the U.S ambassador to Kenya, Whitman isn’t expected to be called to testify in Lynch’s criminal trial, even though her leadership of the company is likely to be put under a microscope during the proceedings.

A British businessman was kidnapped and beaten unconscious by masked men who raided his apartment during a work trip to Brussels.

Mark Langdon, 46, was four days into his two-week trip when the men broke into his apartment and put a knife to his throat.

After searching through his belongings, they blindfolded him and threw him into the back of his car.

After driving for ten minutes, the car stopped and one of the men got out – giving Mark a chance to escape.

He ran towards them and tried to get into the vehicle – but they intercepted him and beat him unconscious.

A few hours later, he woke up and was transported to hospital where doctors told him he had a broken nose, fractured skull, and a broken arm.

Mark, a photo editor, from Plymouth, Devon, said: ‘I have a lot of flashbacks of what I could have done to get out of the situation.

‘I remember one of them standing above me with a knife and I begged them not to stab me.

‘Mentally things are not great and physically things still hurt.

‘It is not a great feeling, I feel very anxious which I never used to have.

‘The thought of staying anywhere alone in accommodation has really put me off.’

The incident happened as Mark stayed at the Condo Gardens in the north of the Belgian capital in January.

At 2am on day four of his business trip he was woken by the sound of the front door unlocking.

He said: ‘Two guys came in with a knife, they put the knife to my throat and put the hush finger to my mouth.

‘They started saying ‘where is your money’ and started searching my room.

‘From there they got me out of bed, blindfolded me and tied my hands behind my back.

‘They tried taking me out of my apartment but I was refusing to go and they started punching me in the head.’

Mark claims he was taken down to the car park and thrown into the back of his car.

They drove for around ten minutes before one of the masked men got out and Mark used this opportunity to escape.

He said: ‘They wanted to drive me to a cash machine to get money out.

‘When the driver opened his door I managed to get a hand free and got out of the back door.

‘Instead of running away, I ran towards them to try and get my car back.

‘One of them hit me on the back of my head and I fell to the floor. I then fell unconscious.’

Mark was woken hours later by a woman asking if she should call the police.

He said: ‘Officers said my head looked like it had been kicked like a football.

‘I had a few scans and it looked like my head had been dislodged from my spine.

‘I am still suffering with the pain, my arm, head, nose teeth are all still really achy from where I had been kicked.’

Mark said he will never return to Belgium as he doesn’t feel safe there anymore.

‘I had been there maybe three to four times before,’ he said. ‘But this time it seemed so dodgy.

‘I knew the area I was staying in was a bit dodgy but when you’re in your apartment you’re supposed to be safe.’

SYDNEY – Tickets for next year’s British & Irish Lions tour went on sale in Australia on Monday despite the opposition in one of the nine fixtures, the Melbourne Rebels, facing the axe at the end of the season.

The Super Rugby team are in administration with millions of dollars of debt and Rugby Australia (RA) is reviewing their future having guaranteed only that the club will complete the current Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

RA chief executive Phil Waugh said that the review into the future of the Rebels was taking longer than he had hoped but guaranteed that the Lions would have a game in Melbourne on July 22 next year.

“While we are working through the Rebels situation, there will be still be a fixture in Melbourne on that date,” Waugh told Australian Associated Press in Melbourne.

“We’ve talked about a Pasifika game or potentially Australia A or the equivalent so there’s different options but at the moment the plan is to have a Rebels team.”

New Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt is the man tasked with ensuring that Australia, currently ranked 10th in the world, are competitive for the tests against the Lions in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney next July and August.

The New Zealander said the process of turning around a side that last year won two of nine tests and crashed out of the World Cup in the pool stage for the first time was in its early stages.

“(I’m) coming in and trying to hit the reset button and get a bit of a foundation again that we can build from,” he told reporters in Sydney.

“I’ve given myself a foundation period. I think it’s a little bit promising at the moment and the discussions I’ve had with Super Rugby coaches have been really, really positive so far, and there’s been some positives in those small steps.”

Schmidt had just started coaching Ireland the last time the Lions toured Australia in 2013, a job he handed over to his defence coach Andy Farrell in 2019.

Farrell, who last weekend led the Irish to a second successive Six Nations title, will lead the Lions in Australia next year.

Schmidt said he expected the tourists to be very strong but thought the Wallabies could match them if he gets his rebuild right.

“It’s about building a bit of a process in how we deliver what we do,” he said.

“If we can build that over the next four months and then through the next period of time with the national team, I think it’ll give us a springboard to be competitive with the Lions.” REUTERS

LONDON (AP) — The British government published an official definition of “extremism” on Thursday, and said groups that get the label will be barred from receiving government funding.

It’s unclear who will be on the list, and critics say branding nonviolent groups as extremist could undermine freedom of speech.

The government defined extremism as “the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance” that aims to destroy others’ rights and freedoms or “undermine, overturn or replace the UK’s system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights.”

The government did not provide examples of extremist groups, but Communities Secretary Michael Gove pointed to the threat from the extreme right and “Islamist extremists who are seeking to separate Muslims from the rest of society and create division within Muslim communities.”

Islamic and civil liberties groups said they worried the definition would be used disproportionately on Muslims.

Qari Asim, chairman of the Mosques and Imams Advisory Board, said “this proposed definition may not be applied consistently.”

“If it’s left to people to apply any definition of extremism and call anyone extremist at their whim, then that is going to create huge division in our society,” he told the BBC.

The announcement comes two weeks after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a rare televised speech outside 10 Downing St. to denounce “a shocking increase in extremist disruption and criminality,” which he linked to the Israel-Hamas war. Reports of both antisemitic and anti-Muslim abuse in Britain have soared since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, which triggered Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

Mass pro-Palestinian protests have drawn hundreds of thousands of people to central London to call for a cease-fire. The protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful, though there have been dozens of arrests over signs and chants that alleged support Hamas, a banned organization in Britain. Jewish organizations and many lawmakers say the mass marches have created an intimidating atmosphere for Jewish Londoners, though members of the Jewish community have been among those on pro-cease-fire marches.

Gove said the new definition does not criminalize anyone and is “not a restraint on free speech” or aimed at stopping protests.

“Today’s definition applies only to government and makes it clear that we will keep these organizations at arm’s length so they can’t benefit from access to government and its funds,” he said.

This is the first picture of the driver who police say ran over and killed a five-month-old British baby and mowed down her family on Lanzarote.

Olivia Brown, 23, is due to be charged when she appears in court tomorrow.

Police on the island told MailOnline that they believe Brown was over the legal limit for alcohol when her ‘out of control’ car mounted the pavement and slammed into the family.

She is currently under house arrest and could be jailed for causing the death of the new-born baby.

Brown lives on the island with her parents and is understood to work at a hotel in the resort of Playa Blanca where the accident took place.

Her social media shows scenes of sunset on the island, posing in front of palm trees and with her mother.

The Brown family are thought to have lived on the island for several years.

The identity of the British family involved in the horrific accident has not been revealed. They were due to leave the island on Sunday, according to police.

The baby’s parents and grandparents were also injured in the accident around 6.30pm on Sunday. The father is said to be in a critical condition in a local hospital.

A Swedish mother and daughter were also injured by the Ford Fiesta which eyewitnesses have told police was speeding and made no attempt to slow down before mounting the pavement.

Yaiza Municipal police chief Vladimir Guadalupe told MailOnline the Swedish mother is in a critical condition. She was airlifted from the island to an intensive care unit in Gran Canaria.

He said her heart and stopped three times and she had to be resuscitated.

The couple had only been in Lanzarote for three hours and were walking back to their hotel when they were struck.

The Police chief said: ‘The investigation is still on going and could be another week. The driver will appear in court but I cannot say yet what the charges will be.

‘The legal limit for alcohol is 0.25 and this person was over that limit and the charge will reflect that.’

The death of the newborn has shocked the island – a popular winter sun destination with British tourists – and the Mayor Osca Noda declared two days of mourning with flags to fly at half mast.

More than 30 people led by the Mayor and including emergency service workers who were first on the scene took part in a solemn one minute silence outside the town hall.

Mayor Noda said the death of the baby has had a huge impact on local residents.

‘We are full of sorrow over such a tragic accident. This is something that has not happened here, and people are very shocked,’ he said.

‘We are doing all we can to support the family who are still in hospital.

Adil De Toro, a local doctor on the island was among the town hall staff who took part in the one-minute silence.

He described how in the aftermath of the incident he and others rushed to the scene to offer any assistance they could.

He said: ‘The government has called this meeting to make a point about how rare and sad this event is.

‘These things never happen here. It has affected the opinion of the island. The police have to investigate exactly what happened whilst she is under house arrest.

‘I ran to the scene after it happened to see if they needed assistance. There was a team of ambulances working around all the injured. It was horrible.’

Hotel director Miguel Angel Sordo told how he ran from the HL Rio Playa Blanca hotel when he heard piercing screams from passers-by who had witnessed the tragedy.

He said the mum of the baby was desperately trying to revive the baby boy.

He said: ‘The baby was lying on the floor and a blonde lady dressed in black was trying to revive him. The health workers arrived immediately and took care of the baby.

‘I offered to help them and some health workers asked me to keep the victims who were lying on the ground awake and to speak to them in English so that they would be conscious.

‘Then more paramedics arrived and, together with the rest, took charge of caring for all the injured.’

While Brown has yet to face a court in the island capital Arrecife feelings among locals was running high over the death crash.

One man, who preferred to stay anonymous, suggested the opinion of the island is that she be made an ‘example of’ if guilty.

He said: ‘The entire island is very upset and shaken by this incident, we want an example to be made.

‘The road where the terrible crash took place is very hard to have an accident on.

‘When you see the impact the vehicle had on the wall, it’s very clear she was moving at speed. If she was using drink and drugs while she was driving she should go to prison for this.’

Having big boobs can come with big problems as Jackie Adedeji knows only too well.

The British TV host, 30, has a size 36K chest and admits one major issue is finding clothes that are stylish, on-trend and flatter her bust.

“I want to take risks and have fun with my clothes, but fashion that is popular is always catered to women with smaller boobs, you can’t fit into fashion trends because they’re not made for you,” she told The Sun.

Jackie developed size 30FF boobs aged 11, and says she has been sexualised for her bust her entire life.

“They literally grew overnight and I noticed that I was treated differently,” she said.

“I started to get messages from friends and family asking if I could cover up more and dress more decently.

“When it came to sports at school I felt like I couldn’t participate. Boys in school would laugh at me when I was playing netball or running at the size of my boobs.

“At that age you boys and girls used to get changed in the classroom together.”

She continued: “My teacher one day said to me ‘Jacqueline I’m really sorry but you can’t get changed in here because you’re far too developed’, so I was made to get changed in the cloakroom.

“I always felt like I was this provocative, promiscuous, unruly child who was distracting everyone with her boobs.”

After this Jackie decided covering up her chest was the best option – even choosing to wear her dad’s baggy hoodies during the summer.

As her boobs continued to grow she realised she couldn’t wear what her friends were wearing.

“My mum took me shopping to get a bra and it was a horrendous cone shaped underwired bra, the lady had cold hands and I just burst into tears,” she recalled.

However, after years of covering herself up, when she was aged 16, Jackie found that having big boobs wasn’t a bad thing anymore.

She said: “Boys liked them, they weren’t funny anymore, I became popular and I loved the attention.

“However, I started realising that people were talking to my chest and not my face.

“So I dressed with my boobs out quite a lot because I was like, right, well, this is all I am, this is what I’m worth – I can use this to my advantage.”

And whilst Jackie may have enjoyed the new found attention her boobs brought, it was a turning point of realising she needed to start to love them too.

“How am I going to make this work? Am I gonna get them reduced? Am I going to get them removed? Am I just going to be okay with them? How do I make peace?”, she explained.

“I realised that I was letting people define who I was. I was ‘Jackie big tits’ the funny girl at school, so I needed to figure out how to take my power back.”

Clothing was an issue, with Jackie often feeling that she couldn’t wear something because of her chest.

She said: “I realised a lot of the way I was feeling about myself was through what other people said to me, ‘Oh, your boobs are so big’, ‘Can you dress a bit more decently?’

Especially with my parents having very ‘’well respected’’ jobs, my dad being a vicar and my mum being a magistrate, I felt like I was embarrassing them for existing.

“And you internalise those messages and think you’re the problem and distraction.

“When you remove all that and you think how do I actually feel about myself? I realised I didn’t feel so bad about who I was.

“My boobs don’t define me. They’re special because they belong to me. I taught myself how to fall in love with myself.”

Heading to university at 18, Jackie learned to have a different outlook on her boobs.

“I could rebrand and show who I am, I decided to reclaim the term ‘big boobs’ myself, then no one got to make me the joke, because I was laughing first,” she said.

But then, of course not everyone is as confident about speaking on boobs as Jackie is.

She explained: “Someone once said to me if I spoke about having big boobs it would ruin my career.”

Since then she’s gone on to be a successful broadcaster and podcaster, having her own award-nominated Channel 4 documentary My Big Boobs.

“It’s so easy for women with bigger boobs to be sexualised, even when we’re not trying to look sexy,” she revealed.

“And that’s their problem not mine, you’re blaming me for being tempting when I’ve not done anything, that’s on you.

“When I was 14 a man stopped me in the street and asked what age I was, he then proceeded to tell me that I couldn’t be that age because of how big my bust was, I was shocked.”

But how does she feel about her boobs now?

“I love them, the relationship you have with yourself is the longest most important relationship you’ll ever be in.”

BRITISH Airways is the second largest UK-based carrier after easyJet in terms of fleet size and number of passengers.

While it sets out to hire more talent in the field with its new pilot recruitment program, here’s how much a rookie aviator could actually get.

How much do British Airways pilots get paid and what is the starting salary?

An entry-level pilot at British Airways can expect £65,000 annually, according to MyFamilyHome.com.

A senior first officer takes home between £100,000 and £120,000 per year.

And a captain can earn up to £167,000 in yearly pay.

Which UK airline pays pilots the most?

According to LoveTheMaldives.com, Virgin Atlantic is the UK airline which pays its pilots the most, with an average salary of £75,202.

In second place is British Airways, which pays pilots £73.550 per year on average.

And Jet2 comes in third, annually paying its pilots an average of £68,970.

How do I become a British Airways pilot?

British Airways (BA) prides itself on having “a long tradition of welcoming people from all walks of life into a career in the skies”.

Although the applications for the BA Speedbird Pilot Academy 2023 are now closed, it will re-open in Spring 2024. Here is everything you need to know about becoming a pilot for the airline.

The Speedbird Pilot Academy is BA’s fully funded training scheme for up to 60 successful candidates per year — working with selected flight training organisations.

British Airways is investing a staggering £7billion in AI to cut delays, speed-up baggage handling and bookings

According to the BA website, you will need to meet the following application criteria to become a pilot:

    • 17-55 years of age to apply and 18 years of age to start training
    • 6 GCSEs grade A-C or 5-9 including Maths, English and a Science or equivalent qualifications*
    • Fluent in English (and, if applicable, an ICAO Level 6 on completion of training) — For non-native English speakers, you will need to a certificate proving you have achieved International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Level 5.5 overall, with no less than 5.5 in any individual area (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking); this must be the Academic test, not General Training.
    • A valid passport which permits unrestricted worldwide travel
    • The right to live and study in the UK without the need for sponsorship
    • Your height must be between 1.57m (5’2″) and 1.90m (6’3″). Height is accurately determined during the assessment process. If you’re taller than 1.90m, you may submit an application, but may be required to undergo a functionality check
    • Able to obtain and hold a UK CAA Class 1 medical with no restrictions and meet British Airways medical criteria**
    • Before training starts, you must have completed referencing and pre-employment checks to the satisfactory standard and supply satisfactory UK and international Criminal Record Checks

*GCSE equivalent qualifications will be accepted and assessed by ECCTIS

    ** Please refer to https://www.caa.co.uk/aeromedical-examiners/medical-standards/pilots/medical-standards-for-pilots/

Although technical skills are important, BA prioritises an applicant’s behaviour as a pilot as the thing that will set them apart.

BA believes its pilots should be passionate and enthusiastic about connecting Britain with the rest of the world.

As the BA website explains: “You’ll need to demonstrate the passion and motivation to excel during the training programme, the ability to remain calm under pressure and a strong ability to solve problems.

“Collaborating and demonstrating you’re a team player is also essential to create incredible experiences for our customers and colleagues on board.”

In September 2023 it was revealed British Airways is picking up the £100,000 tab for 60 applicants a year — making the dream of a career in the cockpit come true for those selected.

Read more on the Scottish Sun

The 60 wannabe pilots started training in 2024 and will be flying with BA by the end of 2025.

Sean Doyle, BA’s Chief Executive, said: “The Speedbird Pilot Academy will make the ambition of becoming a British Airways pilot a reality for people who’d previously written the option off because of the cost barrier.”

A BRITISH Airways Pilot has revealed the three items under £5 that they always pack while flying.

Kat Woodruffe is a senior first officer at the airline who flies the Boeing 777 around the world.

In an interview with AFAR, the pilot shared some of the most important things she always carries while flying.

Woodruffe, who travels about 400,000 miles per year, said she never leaves for work without a pack of clipper tea.

“When I’m away, I just like having a proper cup of tea. I take Clipper tea and a dedicated travel mug around the world,” she told the magazine.

The experienced pilot said while flying planes is not a manual job, her hands and eyes get very dry while flying for long hours.

This is why she always carries hand cream and eye drops in her pouch.

She added: “I always have eye drops and O’Keeffe’s Working Hands hand cream.

“I know that flying planes is hardly manual labour but on long flights, my hands (and eyes) get very dry.”

Woodruffe also revealed that she never carries a designer purse with her while flying to different countries.

She said that this is because the changing weather conditions in across different cities which could damage an expensive purse.

She added: “As much as I’d like to say my handbag is Burberry, well, it’s from H&M.

    New British Airways Seats

“This poor bag has to survive sand in St. Lucia, ice skating in Manhattan, the monsoon in New Delhi, and trekking in Hong Kong. For me, there’s no point having a designer handbag.”

It comes after a travel expert revealed an extremely useful tip for frequent flyers to avoid in-flight thefts.

Cabin thefts are more common than people think – and stealers usually go for the bags filled with valuables such as wallets, laptops and cameras, cash and important documents including passports.

However, travel expert Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK at World Nomads Travel Insurance, has shared an extremely useful tip to avoid such scenarios.

“It’s a calculated gamble on the part [of the thieves], exploiting travellers‘ sense of security once snugly seated on board,” he said.

“Yet, it’s during these moments – the buzz of mealtimes, the dimming of lights, or those quick dashes to the loo – that thieves might try their luck.”

Jonathan advised flyers not to keep cabin luggage in the locker just above their heads during long flights.

He suggests that doing so prevents flyers from keeping an eye on their luggage, giving thieves a chance to nose into the luggage.

He said: “Store larger bags in overhead lockers to keep them safe.

“If the space is available, it can be useful to place them across the aisle so you can easily see if anyone is foraging through them who shouldn’t be.”

The expert also advised to keep mobiles, wallets, passports and cash in your pockets always in sight – and avoid leaving them unattended in any case.

“The best practice is to use a secure waist pouch or carry them in your pocket.

“Avoid leaving them unattended altogether and always keep them in sight. This not only minimises the risk of theft but also ensures that insurance claims are not negatively impacted due to negligence.”
