Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has opened up on an experience he had after being put in an induced coma following heart surgery, which left him with chest pains that saw him miss the first day of his 2022 fraud trial.

Blatter served as president of football’s global governing body from 1998-2015, when he was ejected from office by FIFA’s ethics committee after criminal proceedings were opened against him by the Swiss Attorney General’s Office.

He was forced to stand down in 2015 and was banned by FIFA for eight years, later reduced to six, over ethics breaches for authorising a payment of 2million Swiss Francs (approx £1.8m) to then-UEFA President Michel Platini, allegedly made in his own interests rather than FIFA’s.

Both Blatter, now 88, and Platini would be found not guilty of fraud in July 2022, although the saga continues into a ninth year after their acquittals were appealed.

The trial saw Blatter miss the first day, complaining of chest pains after undergoing heart surgery 18 months earlier, and in an interview with the Telegraph, he has opened up on the near-death experience he had while in a coma.

‘I had hallucinations,’ he said. ‘I have seen that angels were coming for me and wanted to take me off. And I have said, “No, I’m not ready to go”.

‘I was in a coma, I was out, and there are two lovely white-dressed ladies that were looking after me and I had some apparatus to breathe. And then they had to change it.

‘But, in my dream – or, at that time, my reality – it was that there were angels. They said, “You have to come. You have to die now. They are awaiting you in heaven”. I took more than three months afterwards just to realise that I’m still alive.’

After emerging from the induced coma, he was unable to speak French, English or Spanish, only the dialectal language from his birth-place of Valais in Switzerland.

Blatter also revealed that he had been born prematurely, telling the Telegraph he had weighed just 1.25kg at birth.

The 88-year-old had also suffered a brush with mortality in the months immediately following that start of the investigation into his payment to Platini, as he collapsed on visiting the graves of his parents.

‘I was among the angels singing and the devil with the fire. But it was the angels who sang,’ he told Swiss channel RTS.

In the wide-ranging interview Blatter also suggested that the World Cup would likely never return to England in his life-time, claiming the English game is ‘too successful’.

The 2010 award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was one of the most controversial decisions of his reign

The 2010 award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was one of the most controversial decisions of his reign

He said: ‘I would say, in my life, I will not witness it! The problem is that English football is too successful.’

Blatter wholeheartedly ruled out a potential return to FIFA – where he spent 42 years – although he described his role as a football ‘missionary’, admitting: ‘I don’t miss the presidency. I live for football still now because I cannot forget football.

‘I was 42 years in Fifa but I’m aware that I’m out of the game. Out of the game physically. But I’m still into the game, which was my passion and my mission. I was like a missionary. And a missionary never gives up.’

He added: ‘I only want what my daughter is saying in the book, that somebody should have said, “Thank you for what you have done”. That’s all. Nothing very special.’

As rural hospitals continue to struggle financially, a new type of hospital is slowly taking root, especially in the Southeast.

Rural emergency hospitals receive more than $3 million in federal funding a year and higher Medicare reimbursements in exchange for closing all inpatient beds and providing 24/7 emergency care. While that makes it easier for a hospital to keep its doors open, experts say it doesn’t solve all of the challenges facing rural health care.

People might have to travel further for treatments for illnesses that require inpatient stays, like pneumonia or COVID-19. In some of the communities where hospitals have converted to the new designation, residents are confused about what kind of care they can receive. Plus, rural hospitals are hesitant to make the switch, because there’s no margin of error.

“It’s ironic” that the facilities that might need the most help can’t afford to take the risk, said Carrie Cochran-McClain, chief policy officer at the National Rural Health Association. She pointed to having to give up certain services and benefits, such as a federal discount program for prescription drugs.

The government, which classifies hospitals by type, rolled out the rural emergency option in January 2023. Only 19 hospitals across the U.S. received rural emergency hospital status last year, according to the University of North Carolina’s Sheps Center for Health Services Research.

The majority are in the South, with some in the Midwest, and hospitals in Nebraska and Florida recently started to explore the option.

The designation is aimed at a very specific population, said George Pink, deputy director of the Sheps Center’s Rural Health Research Program, and that’s rural hospitals on the brink of closure with few people getting inpatient care already.

    Saving rural care

That was the case for Irwin County Hospital in Ocilla, Ga., which was the second rural emergency hospital established in the U.S.

Weeks before converting, the hospital received at least $1 million in credit from the county so it could make pay employees — money that county board of supervisors chairperson Scott Carver doubted he’d see returned.

“We operate on a $6 million budget for the county, so to extend that kind of line of credit was dangerous on our part to some degree,” he said. “But … we felt like we had to try.”

Irwin County Hospital became a rural emergency hospital on Feb. 1, 2023. Quentin Whitwell, the hospital’s CEO, said it was an ideal candidate.

“We’re still finding out what some of the impacts are, given that it’s a new thing,” said Whitwell, who through his company Progressive Health Systems owns and manages six hospitals in the Southeast, most of which are rural emergency hospitals or have applied for the designation. “But the change to a rural emergency hospital has transformed this hospital.”

A combination of state programs and tax credits, plus the new designation, means the hospital has $4 million in the bank, Carver said. Simply put, the work was worth it to him.

Traci Harper, a longtime Ocilla resident, isn’t so sure. About a year ago, she rushed her son to the hospital for emergency care for spinal meningitis.

Because the new designation requires the hospital to transfer patients to larger hospitals within 24 hours, Harper’s son was sent to another in-state facility and three days later ended up getting the care he needed in a hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

“That’s two hours away,” she said. “The whole time I could have taken him there myself, but nobody told me that.”

    ‘Barely surviving’

Nebraska’s first rural emergency hospital opened in February in a city called Friend.

Warren Memorial Hospital had reached a breaking point: Federal pandemic relief money had dried up. The city, which owns the hospital, had to start extending lines of credit so hospital employees could get paid. A major street repair project was even delayed, said Jared Chaffin, the hospital’s chief financial officer and one of three co-CEOs.

“Back in the summer, we were barely surviving,” said Amy Thimm, the hospital’s vice president of clinical services and quality and co-CEO.

Though residents expressed concerns at a September town hall about closing inpatient services, the importance of having emergency care outweighed other worries.

“We have farmers and ranchers and people who don’t have the time to drive an hour to get care, so they’ll just go without,” said Ron Te Brink, co-CEO and chief information officer. “Rural health care is so extremely important to a lot of Nebraska communities like ours.”

The first federal payment, about $270,000, arrived March 5. Chaffin projects the hospital’s revenue will be $6 million this year — more than it’s ever made.

“That’s just insane, especially for our little hospital here,” he said. “We still have Mount Everest to climb, and we still have so much work ahead of us. The designation alone is not a savior for the hospital — it’s a lifeline.”

    Rural troubles

That lifeline has proved difficult to hold onto for Alliance Healthcare System in Holly Springs, Miss., another one of Whitwell’s hospitals and the fourth facility in the country to convert.

Months after being approved as a rural emergency hospital in March 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reneged on its decision.

Hospital CEO Dr. Kenneth Williams told The Associated Press that the government said the hospital isn’t rural because it is less than an hour away from Memphis. A CMS spokesperson said the facility was “inadvertently certified.”

The hospital has until April to transition back to full service, but many in the community of largely retirees believe the hospital has closed, Williams said. Patient volume is at a record low. If the federal payments stop coming, Williams isn’t sure the hospital will survive.

“We might have been closed if we hadn’t [become a rural emergency hospital], so … something had to be done,” he said. “Do I regret all of the issues that for some reason we’ve incurred that the other [hospitals] have not? I don’t know.”

Though Alliance appears to be one of few facilities that have been negatively impacted by converting to a rural emergency hospital, Pink said it’s too soon to know if the federal designation is a success.

“If my intuition is correct, it will probably work well for some communities, and it may not work well for others,” he said.

Cochran-McClain said her organization is trying to work with Congress to change regulations that have been a barrier for rural facilities, like closing inpatient behavioral health beds that are already scarce.

Brock Slabach, the National Rural Health Association’s chief operations officer, told the AP that upward of 30 facilities are interested in converting to rural emergency hospitals this year.

As Whitwell sees it: “As this program evolves, there will be more people that I think will understand the value.”

MILLIONS of Sky customers are being warned they could struggle to find the right channel as major TV changes come in on Tuesday.

Sky is advising people to double check the channel numbers to avoid missing out on their favourite programmes.

Ahead of the launch of Sky’s new reality channel GREAT! real on March 20, Sky is set to reshuffle their channel numbers on Tuesday, March 19.

The changes all directly affect users of Sky’s next-gen internet based platforms like Sky Glass and Sky Stream.

These changes will affect people in both the UK and in the Republic of Ireland.

It is currently thought that there will be no major changes to Sky satellite users.

List of changes to Sky Glass/Sky Stream (UK)

    • BLAZE – 168 to 169
    • PBS America HD – 169 to 170
    • Together HD – 170 to 171
    • S4C HD – 171 to 172 (in England and Scotland)
    • RTÉ One HD – 171 to 172 (Northern Ireland)
    • BBC Scotland HD – 172 to 173 (England and Wales)
    • RTÉ 2 HD – 172 to 173 (Northern Ireland)
    • BBC ALBA HD – 173 to 174 (England and Wales)
    • S4C HD – 174 to 175 (Northern Ireland)
    • BBC Scotland HD – 175 to 176 (Northern Ireland)
    • BBC ALBDA HD – 176 to 177 (Northern Ireland)

The children’s channel Tiny Pop will also be removed from channel 214 (215 in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland), with Pop Max moving to take it’s place.

Some parents were outraged by the change, but the family favourite will live on digitally as a streamed-only service.

List of changes to Sky Glass/Sky Stream (ROI)

    • BLAZE – 161 to 162
    • PBS America HD – 162 to 163
    • Together HD – 163 to 164

On top of these channel changes, GREAT! real will launch on channel 168 in the UK on March 20.

On the same day, GREAT! real will launch on channel 161 in the Republic of Ireland.

Price hike for Amazon Fire TV, Samsung and Roku users revealed for app used by millions as popular plan killed

The new reality channel will just be added to the bottom of the list of entertainment channel numbers for satellite users – meaning it will be channel 189.

Satellite users will also see the kid’s show Pop Max taking over Tiny Pop’s slot.

It comes just after Sky reshuffled the sports channels on people’s Sky satellite, Sky Glass and Stream devices both in the UK and Republic of Ireland last month.

The changes happened in multiple stages across six days between Thursday February, 8, and Tuesday February, 13, due to the introduction of Sky Sports Tennis.

Sky Sports Tennis is launching on February, 11, and will see more tennis broadcast than anywhere else by Sky Sports.

They say more than 4,000 matches from 80 tournaments on the ATP and WTA Tours will be shown a year.

And that is in addition to their exclusive live coverage of the US Open.

Sky will also take over channel 412 in the UK after it was vacated by Viaplay Sports 1 in January as they look to sell the Viaplay channels back to Premier Sports.

Brock Slabach, the National Rural Health Association’s chief operations officer, told the AP that upwards of 30 facilities are interested in converting to rural emergency hospitals this year.

As rural hospitals continue to struggle financially in the United States, a new type of hospital is slowly taking root, especially in the Southeast.

People might have to travel further for treatments for illnesses that require inpatient stays, such as pneumonia or COVID-19.

Nineteen hospitals across the U.S. received rural emergency hospital status last year, according to the University of North Carolina’s Sheps Center for Health Services Research.

The majority are in the South, with some in the Midwest.

The designation is aimed at a very specific population, said George Pink, deputy director of the Sheps Center’s Rural Health Research Program, and that is rural hospitals on the brink of closure with few people getting inpatient care already.

    Saving rural care

That was the case for Irwin County Hospital in Ocilla, Georgia, which was the second rural emergency hospital established in the U.S.

Weeks prior to converting, the hospital received at least $1 million in credit from the county so it could pay employees — money that county board of supervisors’ chairman Scott Carver doubted he’d see returned.

“We operate on a $6 million budget for the county, so to extend that kind of line of credit was dangerous on our part to some degree,” he said. “But … we felt like we had to try.”

Alliance Healthcare System hospital CEO Kenneth Williams said on Feb. 29, 2024, that after the Holly Springs, Mississippi, facility was approved as a rural emergency hospital in March 2023, the federal government later reneged on its decision, saying the hospital is not rural,

Because the new designation requires the hospital to transfer patients to larger hospitals within 24 hours, Harper’s son was sent to another in-state facility and three days later ended up getting the care he needed in a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.

“That’s two hours away,” she said. “The whole time I could have taken him there myself, but nobody told me that.”

    Barely surviving

Nebraska’s first rural emergency hospital opened in February in a city named Friend.

Although residents expressed concerns at a September town hall about closing inpatient services, the importance of having emergency care outweighed other worries.

That lifeline has proven difficult to hold onto for Alliance Healthcare System in Holly Springs, Mississippi, another one of Whitwell’s hospitals and the fourth facility in the country to convert.

Months after being approved as a rural emergency hospital in March 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reneged on its decision.

Hospital CEO Kenneth Williams told The Associated Press that the government said the hospital isn’t rural because it is less than an hour away from Memphis.

Although Alliance appears to be one of few facilities that have been negatively affected by converting to a rural emergency hospital, Pink said it’s too soon to know if the federal designation is a success.

“If my intuition is correct, it will probably work well for some communities and it may not work well for others,” he said.

Frequent flyers members can expect to book more flights with fewer points in the near future as Qantas makes changes to its loyalty program.

The airline’s biggest overhaul to the program is tipped to be released in April and it is rumoured to see the introduction of a new member membership tier.

It will allow members to convert Frequent Flyers points to cash at a rate of one point for one cent when booking an economy seat. Points are expected to be worth less for higher-quality seats.

Members can currently pay for a seat with points through Classic Flight Rewards or have the points converted to 0.7c each under Points Pay Plus.

The new tier is expected to bring more customers to Australia’s most popular flight rewards program, with over 15million members in 2023 – up from just over 14million the year prior.

A new subscription tier is rumoured to be coming to Qantas’ Frequent Flyers program in April as the company looks for ways to improve relations with customers (stock image)

A Qantas spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the new subscription, rumoured to be called Classic+, will be offered alongside the two current programs which will remain unchanged.

‘We’re still working to finalise the frequent flyer improvements which are responding to what members are telling us about the importance of redeeming points for flights at the times they most want to fly,’ the spokesperson said.

‘It’s a significant investment that will deliver great value for members, but it also makes sense for the program and our partners.’

Sources close to the overhaul told the Australian Financial Review that the points used through Classic+ will be worth a cent each when booking an economy seat.

This will mean a $100 flight will cost 10,000 Frequent Flyers points.

Sources close to the loyalty program's overhaul say the new tier will let members convert each point to a one cent discount an economy seat (stock picture)

The revamp was hinted at by Qantas’ Chief executive Vanessa Hudson during a financial update last month.

She noted members had become frustrated with the availability of seats through the Classic Flight Rewards program since the covid-19 pandemic.

The loyalty program brought in about $1.27billion in revenue and $270million in earnings in the last half of 2023 despite the frustration.

The airline recently invested $50million of the $230 million allocated for spending on improving the customer experiences into the program to unlock more reward seats.

It’s the discontinued beloved chocolate-flavoured dessert that triggered a protest out the front of Brownes Dairy in Perth and it might be finally coming back to supermarket shelves.

The iconic Yogo Dirt Dessert offered so much chocolatey joy to kids growing up in the 2000s and excitement has been brewing this month with whispers it’s coming back.

For those unfamiliar with the Brownes delicacy, it had a base of chocolate crumble “dirt” and soft gooey marshmallows covered with chocolate Yogo.

It was deleted in 2012 due to a low sales rate and super fans of the gooey delight have been petitioning for the company to bring it back ever since.

The Facebook page Bring Back Yogo Dirt Dessert has 2300 followers and has been calling on Brownes for the product to make a comeback and it seems they have finally listened.

A Brownes spokesperson told PerthNow they have been working hard to make Yogo lovers wishes come true.

“The people of WA have been demanding this product returns for years. Ever since the product left shelves we’ve been receiving requests to bring back Dirt Dessert,” he said.

“We’ve been listening, we’ve been tinkering with the recipe, and we’ve been working incredibly hard to give the people of WA what they want.

“More will be revealed very soon.”

The spokesperson said another reason the product was discontinued was because the company no longer had the machine in Perth to make it.

“When the decision was made to stop selling the product the machine was also sold off. Whilst we’ve had numerous people in WA ask us to bring this iconic dessert back, we actually couldn’t,” he said.

“Our factory is also now gluten and wheat-allergen free, so we can’t remake the cookie crumble in our Balcatta facility as we’re completely allergen-free now (except milk products of course).”

The most replicated piece of cinema jewellery in history — the necklace worn by Kate Winslet in Titanic — will be on display in Perth this month in an exhibition set to be personally unveiled by the film’s legendary director.

Perth movie buffs will have the chance to check out the recognisable blue diamond worn by Winslet as Rose in James Cameron’s famous 1997 film when the exhibition by the acclaimed explorer and filmmaker opens at the WA Maritime Museum.

Cameron — the man also behind films The Terminator and Avatar — will travel to WA himself next weekend to launch the self-titled exhibition, James Cameron: Challenging the Deep.

Not only will the exhibition showcase the 69-year-old’s extensive career as a deep-sea explorer and his many history-making expeditions but costumes and props from Titanic will also be on display.

Highlights include the dress worn by Winslet’s character Rose and the iconic Heart of the Ocean necklace made with zirconia and white gold which is reportedly worth $8000.

The boarding outfit worn by Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jack and a copy of Jack’s sketches drawn by Cameron himself will also be on show.

While the love story between Rose and Jack and the stunning necklace is fictional, it is said to be inspired by a real sapphire that was on board the ship in 1912.

This possible inspiration for the Heart of the Ocean necklace was reportedly owned by Kate Florence Phillips and was given to her by her lover, Henry Samuel Morley.

Phillips was wearing the necklace when the Titanic sank, and she made it to Lifeboat No. 11 while Morley, who couldn’t swim, died in the ocean.

The second inspiration for the necklace is the Hope Diamond which is the closest equivalent to the Titanic diamond in terms of colouration, size, and value.

The Hope Diamond is said to be cursed, as it supposedly brought tragic fates to those who wore it, and it is on display at the National Museum of Natural History in the US.

This won’t be the first time the people of Perth have been able to see the Titanic necklace.

The movie prop was last here in 2015 and 2016 for the Titanic: The Exhibition which was set-up inside the Perth Convention Centre.

The James Cameron exhibition is being touted as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to hear from the director, who has a passion for deep-sea exploration, in person.

The West Australian’s film critic, Ben O’Shea, will host a question-and-answer session with the film icon.

Arts Minister David Templeman said it was an honour to welcome Cameron to WA.

New measures to combat spam calls: In an effort to tackle the nuisance of pesky calls, telecom regulators are gearing up to introduce a new policy mandating different numbering series for different types of commercial calls. Right now, only one series, 140, is used for all commercial calls.
According to ET, these numbers could be split into two categories: 140 for marketing and 160 or 161 for service calls, making it simpler to understand why someone is calling in the future. This change aligns with recent suggestions from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for network operators and mobile device manufacturers to show caller names for both personal and business calls.
A senior official from TRAI told the financial daily that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved the recommendation for allocating distinct numbering series and that TRAI will soon issue directives to this effect.
He also mentioned that voice calls have become a bigger source of spam than text messages after blockchain-based filters were implemented. While complaints about SMS spam have dropped to only 30,000 per month, reports of unwanted calls from 10-digit personal numbers have reached several hundred thousand.
This is mainly because subscribers have stopped answering calls from the 140 series, assuming they’re spam. As a result, businesses have resorted to using personal numbers instead.
The TRAI official was quoted as saying, “Even banks were unable to fulfil transaction verification calls because subscribers would simply ignore 140 numbers. They had to ultimately resort to other private unregistered SIMs.”
It became a problem because fraudsters with personal SIM cards could deceive people into thinking they were real bank representatives. That’s why it’s necessary to clearly distinguish service calls.
The regulator will introduce a separate range, probably 160 or 161, to help people easily recognize transactional calls without mixing them up with marketing calls. Marketing calls will still come from the 140 series as they do now.
According to TRAI data, there are 305,587 entities registered for sending commercial SMS and calls. However, the actual number is likely higher since many entities use 10-digit P2P numbers for telemarketing calls.
An executive at a communications startup commented, “Given that getting private connections is so easy, with up to 10 SIM cards permissible per national ID, businesses refrain from taking the official route for making marketing calls.”
He also noted that fierce competition and price wars among telecom companies have resulted in a blatant disregard for the mandated Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure when selling SIM cards.
The government is actively combating spam. In addition to implementing the calling name display feature, DoT recently introduced two portals: ‘Chakshu’ and the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP).
