    • The 23-year-old shocked rugby in January as he quit the sport
    • The former Wales winger is hopeful to make it into the NFL

Louis Rees-Zammit said he was ‘disappointed’ with his showing in front of NFL scouts as the former Wales rugby star looks to crack the world of American football.

In January, the 23-year-old shocked rugby when he announced he was leaving the sport after winning 32 caps for Wales to enter the NFL International Pathways Players Program (IPPP).

A 10-week crash-course, the IPPP is designed to bring international prospects up to speed with the skills required to make it in the NFL – or at the very least have a shot at being drafted.

On Wednesday, the former Wales winger clocked a time of 4.44seconds in his 40-yard sprint at the IPPP Pro Day at the University of South Florida.

According to Associated Press senior NFL reporter Rob Maaddi, Rees-Zammit was not impressed with his performance.

The time would have been good enough for the top-30 fastest dashes at the NFL Combine this year

However, to put the Welshman’s time into context, since 2013 only 11 players have run a sub-4.30 second 40-yard-dash at the NFL Combine.

Earlier this month, Texas star wide receiver Xavier Worthy set a new NFL Combine record for the distance by stopping the clock at 4.21seconds.

Rees-Zammitt’s time would have put him in the 30 fastest draft prospects at the NFL Combine this year.

The Welshman once set a top speed of 24.2mph during a game, faster than the 23.24mph produced by Miami Dolphins superstar Tyreek Hill on a 27-yard kickoff return while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016.

Nicknamed ‘Cheetah’, the Dolphins star is renowned for his explosive acceleration and devastating speed and is one of the most electrifying wideouts in the NFL.

The 40-yard dash is one of a series of drills – along with bench press and vertical jump – that scouts at NFL Pro Days and at the NFL Combine use to evaluate each player’s strength, speed and ball skills.

Rees-Zammitt was joined at the IPP Pro Day but 15 fellow IPP hopefuls, including former Northampton centre Harry Mallinder.

Gaelic football goalkeepers Rory Beggan, Charlie Smyth and Mark Jackson, as well as Scottish sprinter Praise Olatoke were also given the chance to impress scouts from all 32 NFL teams.

While Rees-Zammit was not thrilled with his 40-yard performance, IPP strength and conditioning coach Kevin Heiberger has been impressed with the former Gloucester player so far.

‘From a speed dynamic standpoint, Louis does things that are extremely difficult that he makes look natural,’ he said.

Since the IPP was first established in 2017, only 37 players have signed with NFL teams through it and Rees-Zammitt admitted the learning curve had been steep.

‘The amount we’ve learnt – on and off the field – has been unbelievable […] the change is mad,’ he told Mail Sport.

The former Wales star, however, isn’t contemplating failure.

‘That’s not even in my mind… if I had any doubt in my head I wouldn’t do this,’ he said.

‘You have to believe in yourself and you have to have full confidence in your ability.’

Parents could pay as little as $10 per day for childcare and receive up to 52 weeks of paid parental leave under a new draft law that will seek to make childcare free for low-income families.

Early childhood advocates will launch a bill for consultation into parliament on Wednesday alongside independent MP Zoe Daniel.

Under the proposal, three days per week of early learning would be guaranteed for all children aged five and under, capped at $10 per day, and free for low-income families.

Ms Daniel said the new policy could be “transformative” to lift rates of women’s workforce participation and reduce cost-of-living pressures facing Australian households.

“It’s the bold, visionary reform that we so seldom see in Australia and in that sense it’s an enormous opportunity. The exciting and transformative benefits far outweigh the costs,” she told NCA NewsWire.

According to recent data from the Productivity Commission, out-of-pocket child care costs have risen substantially for families living in every state and territory in Australia.

Victorians currently pay the highest daycare bill in the country, with the average cost of 50 hours of centre-based care at $626 a week.

The government increased its childcare subsidy for families earning under $530,000 last July, however, according to a report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission last year, fees rose by nearly double the rate of wages and inflation between 2018 to 2022.

Thrive by Five’s Jay Weatherill said too many Australian children were not able to attend childcare and preschool because their parents cannot afford it.

“Many families say the cost of early learning is akin to that of a second mortgage. Others are turned away from their local childcare centre or preschool because the waitlist is astronomically long,” he said.

“We would never stand for that happening with primary or secondary education – early years education should be no different.”

Parenthood CEO Georgie Dent said the recent announcement to include superannuation in paid parental leave next year and expand entitlements to 26 weeks by July 2026 marked “good progress”.

But she said there was still a long way to go to reduce financial hurdles for Australian parents.

“We hear time and time again from parents – particularly from those living regionally and remotely, or those from lower-income households – that it either didn’t make sense financially to progress their careers once they had children or that it was simply impossible due to care being inaccessible,” Ms Dent said.

“Whether it’s the high cost, the years-long waitlist, or the fact that there are simply no services in their area – too many parents and children miss out.”

Early childcare advocates say the new Bill will be up for public consultation and will be seeking bipartisan support from MPs.

It also proposes for the creation of a national Early Childhood Development Commission to work with state and federal governments to implement the reforms over 10 years.

The policy is in line with recommendations from the government’s Women Equality Taskforce, which called to immediately establish universal childcare and extend the paid parental leave scheme to 52 weeks to ensure women aren’t burdened financially after having children.

From the moment news broke of Tim Wakefield’s passing last Oct. 1, it was clear that this year’s Red Sox home opener would be an emotional day.

After all, the 2024 schedule had been finalized months earlier, and the first game at Fenway Park was set for April 9. As in, the Red Sox would be honoring the player who wore No. 49 on 4/9. Like a message from the baseball gods.

Unfortunately, there was an immediate issue, too. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Red Sox breaking the 86-year “Curse of the Bambino.” Incorporating that into the home opener’s pregame festivities was a given. However, the world found out that both Tim and his wife, Stacy, were battling cancer less than a week before his passing because his former teammate, Curt Schilling, decided to announce it for them, against their express wishes for privacy.

The Red Sox were furious with Schilling, and many members of the organization remain so. When asked about plans, a source told the Herald that the Sox were going to prioritize respecting the Wakefields. According to another source, a higher-up proclaimed that there was “No (expletive) way” Schilling would be included in any such festivities. Some players from the ‘04 team made it clear to the Sox that they didn’t want Schilling to come.

Such sentiments were further compounded when Stacy passed away less than five months after her husband.

So it was an unpleasant surprise when the Sox announced new home opener details on Monday, and the press release specifically noted, “All members of the 2004 team are invited.”

The juxtaposition of that statement, sandwiched between paragraphs about honoring the Wakefields, is stunning.

Then there are the No. 49 patches, which will be on the team’s jersey sleeves all season long in Wakefield’s honor. Unlike the traditional round patches for the late Johnny Pesky and Jerry Remy, the Sox opted for a heart shape for Wakefield. The press release explained that this is technically a “nod” to his tireless philanthropic efforts with the Red Sox Foundation. It’s also simply appropriate for a man who was very much the heart and soul of this organization for nearly three decades.

How, then, can they extend an invitation to someone who behaved so heartlessly?

Likely, the Sox chose to make this public statement so that Schilling can’t claim he wasn’t invited, as he did during the ‘18 World Series. Several members of the ‘04 squad wanted to attend, and though it was far from a complete roster, Schilling complained about being excluded. One would think that, given the many times he’s lambasted the Sox over the years, he wouldn’t even want to come.

There’s also a chance that the Red Sox will work something out with Schilling behind the scenes so that he agrees not to attend.

Regardless of the outcome, the entire situation is painful, frustrating, and just plain sad. Any and all ‘04 celebrations will forever be incomplete without Wakefield, and Schilling has ruined his own reputation, tarnished the collective memory of that historic season, and caused immense hurt to so many.

For over a decade, Schilling has retained hero status among many fans who believe baseball’s equivalent of separation between church and state. It’s one of the worst time-honored traditions in baseball: “on-field issues” such as performance-enhancing drug use are judged more harshly than the “off-the-field issues” that have real-world implications. In other words, it’s acceptable to be a bad person as long as you’re throwing gas, regularly putting up double-digit strikeout numbers, and pitching your team to the World Series.

Few ballplayers have benefited from this way of thinking more than Schilling over the last decade or so.

First, but certainly not foremost, he’s bad-mouthed the Red Sox several times over the years, and called out ownership on more than one occasion. “The ownership in Boston is comprised of some very, very bad human beings who on my way out of baseball did things to myself and my family that I’ll never forget,” he said in January ‘22. He once called principal owner John Henry “a dummy.” In 2011, he went on 98.5 The Sports Hub and said Henry was “full of (expletive).” He declared that if elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, he wouldn’t be wearing a Red Sox cap on his bronze plaque, then blamed the Sox for not getting elected.

Then there was the Rhode Island lawsuit regarding his failed gaming company and the tens of millions of taxpayer money he wasted.

Schilling was removed from the 2015 Little League World Series broadcast for tweeting out a meme that compared Muslim extremists to Nazis. Speaking of, he has an ample collection of what he calls “World War II stuff.” That’s a sanitized way of saying that he’s spent thousands, perhaps millions on Nazi artifacts, including uniforms worn by Adolf Hitler, Reinhard Heydrich, and Hermann Göring. The 192-photo Facebook album is still up; the description notes that he needs to sell off some of his collection because he’s running out of space.

ESPN finally fired him in 2016, when he posted transphobic content on social media. That was the same year he joked about lynching journalists. “Ok, so much awesome here,” he captioned a post that November, which showed a photo of a shirt with the roads, “Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required.”

Even then, it was clear he felt somewhat untouchable. “Given how much I talk, it’s amazing that I haven’t ruined myself,” he told Esquire Magazine in 2017.

In the years since, Schilling plunged himself into the alt-right deep end. He interviewed white supremacists on his Breitbart radio show, and his X page (formerly Twitter) was overflowing with medical disinformation, QAnon content, and praise for the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

At some point after Wakefield’s passing, Schilling wiped the entire account. He has yet to make a public apology to the family. If that’s still the case in three weeks, how can the Red Sox possibly allow his presence?

There are still far too many people who believe that baseball should only be about baseball, even though that has never been the case. Baseball has always been about more. Baseball is about patience, perseverance, history, teamwork, brotherhood, family, and love.

Tim Wakefield exemplified all of those things. Curt Schilling betrayed all of those things.

If Schilling had any sense of respect, he would stay home. Of course, the reason this is even a topic of discussion is that he doesn’t.

Boston city councilors unhappy with having to work this past New Year’s Day are seeking a change in the city charter that would prevent mayoral and council inaugurations from being held on a federal holiday.

Councilor Gabriela Coletta, chair of the government operations committee, is recommending that the body vote favorably Wednesday on a home rule petition that would amend the city charter by moving the inauguration date from the first Monday of January to the first weekday after Jan. 2.

If approved, Mayor Michelle Wu would need to sign off on the petition before it could be pitched to state lawmakers on Beacon Hill, who would also have to approve a charter change moving the end of mayoral and council terms in the same way.

“The purpose of this docket is to ensure that City of Boston employees will not be required to work on the federally observed holiday for Jan. 1 New Year’s Day solely to participate in and facilitate city council and mayoral inaugurations (and) the commencement of the municipal year,” Coletta wrote in a committee report.

The docket for the petition, filed by Council Vice President Brian Worrell, drew laughter when it was read into the record by City Clerk Alex Geourntas at a Jan. 24 City Council meeting.

“Lots of snickering, I wonder why,” Council President Ruthzee Louijeune said at the time, perhaps alluding to the late-night celebrations that occurred on New Year’s Eve followed by the quick turnaround of a 10 a.m. inauguration, where the 13 councilors elected in November were required to take the oath of office.

A brief City Council meeting was also held at noon on New Year’s Day, where a vote was taken to select Louijeune as the body’s new president.

Worrell, in a Monday statement to the Herald, spoke to the strain that quick turnaround placed on the city’s public safety employees.

“This year, our first responders had to staff our inauguration 10 hours after First Night and New Year’s Eve,” Worrell said. “That’s too great a strain to put on our public safety officers. Other years, we wait till Jan. 7 to have an inauguration.

“I’d rather get to work earlier,” he added. “This solution solves for both problems, updating a centuries-old document with an easy fix that will ensure inauguration is Jan. 3-5, which is more in line with federal standards and should increase civic engagement.”

Cherry Blossom trees are blooming early

    01:53

Spring has almost sprung; The vernal equinox, the official start date for the season in the Northern Hemisphere, arrives on Tuesday, March 19.

The 2024 spring equinox will occur at exactly 11:06 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. But why does the day mark the start of spring and why only in the Northern Hemisphere?

    What is an equinox?

There are only two equinoxes a year: vernal and autumnal. They happen when the sun is directly overhead at noon, creating nearly equal portions of day and night in a 24-hour period. The word equinox itself is derived from the Latin words aequus and nox, or equal night.

It usually falls on March 19, 20, or 21. A spring equinox on March 21 is rare, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. There hasn’t been one in the mainland U.S. for the entirety of the 21st century and there won’t be one until 2101.

The date varies, in part, because Earth travels around the sun in 365.24 days, while a calendar year is 365 days, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

What’s the difference between the spring equinox and meteorological spring?

While the 2024 vernal equinox falls on March 19, meteorological spring began at the start of the month. According to NASA, there are two types of seasons: meteorological and astronomical.

Meteorological seasons are tied to the calendar and are based on the annual temperature cycle. Meteorological seasons are broken up into groupings of three months. Each year, meteorological spring lasts from March 1 until May 31.

Astronomical seasons are based on the tilt of Earth’s axis and Earth’s position during its orbit around the sun.

When does spring start in the Southern Hemisphere?

In the Southern Hemisphere, spring starts in September, when fall begins in the Northern Hemisphere.

The March equinox will bring later sunrises, earlier sunsets, chillier winds and dry, falling leaves in the Southern Hemisphere. The reverse is true in the Northern Hempisphere, where Tuesday’s equinox will bring earlier sunrises, later sunsets, softer winds, and budding plants.

    Rituals, traditions and myths

While Easter isn’t until the end of March, there’s an egg tradition tied to the equinox. According to a weather.gov post, Chinese tradition includes the belief that an egg can be made to stand on end at the exact moment when winter ends and spring stars. However, it’s technically possible to stand an egg on end on any day of the year, as long as you have a large amount of patience.

Nowruz, the Iranian or Persian New Year, is tied to the spring equinox. It’s been celebrated for more than 3,000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions, according to the United Nations.

When is the next solstice and equinox?

Those impatient for the start of summer need to wait for the summer solstice on Thursday, June 20. The autumnal equinox, signaling the start of fall, will be on Sunday, Sept. 22. The winter solstice this year falls on Saturday, Dec. 21.

BBC Breakfast viewers were left reaching for the remote as they tore into an MP’s ‘car crash’ interview on the programme.

Regular show hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were back on the famous red sofa to wake Britain up with the day’s headlines and interview a slew of guests.

Among the names appearing on the show this morning was embattled MP Kemi Badenoch.

The Secretary of State for Business and Trade was speaking to Jon and Sally live from Coventry where she had her say on the latest political scandals.

It appeared that her interview only managed to rile up more trouble and discourse online as viewers of the Beeb’s morning offering were quick to dismiss what she had to say.

Among one of the topics she was probed on were tech tycoon Frank Hester’s ‘racist’ comments toward leading MP Diane Abbot.

The Tory party’s biggest donor allegedly said looking at Diane made him “want to hate all black women”.

Despite last week branding the comments as “racist” and saying “it’s never acceptable to conflate someone’s views with the colour of their skin,” Kemi came under fire this morning for telling Jon to “move on” with his questioning as she insinuated it was ‘old news‘.

Fans were left flocking to X – formerly Twitter – to hit out at the ‘disaster’ interview whilst others remarked that they had switched off entirely.

One viewer penned online: “Is this a Red Nose Day sketch? Car crash interview …. #BBCBreakfast.”

Another followed up: “#BBCBreakfast sorry, turning off again, you say that you’re asking the questions that the viewing public want answered.

“What I don’t want is a BBC presenter going on and on and on asking a question that has been answered but not in the way BBC want so they keep going… #awful.”

Before a third commented: “Just watched #KemiBadenoch on #BBCBreakfast. She’s trying to change her narrative. Never an attractive quality in a politician.”

The BBC’s latest “car crash” interview comes just over a week after fellow BBC journalist Naga Munchetty, 49, was slammed for undertaking her “worst” interview to date.

Naga was interviewing Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves on the programme but she interrupted Reeves on a number of occasions which left BBC Breakfast viewers frustrated.

Raging on social media, fans branded it a ‘weak interview’ from Naga – with one going as far as saying it was the “worst interview the BBC has done”.

One posted: “Ffs Naga, stop interrupting and badgering Rachel Reeves, some of us would like to hear her point of view on the budget. I bet you don’t do it to Hunt later!!”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — April Coleman spent Sunday cavorting in the street with family and friends, passing out green beads at the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Kansas City, Missouri, and she said she would not be deterred by last month’s deadly shooting at another big mass gathering.

A rally honoring the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs was disrupted when two groups of people began shooting at each other, leaving a mother of two dead and about two dozen others injured — half of them under 16.

Coleman acknowledged that the shooting wasn’t completely out of her mind, but said she never considered skipping the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

“I don’t want to live my life in fear,” she said. “I still want to come out and have fun with good people.”

This time around, under a heavy police presence, things were calm. Police spokeswoman Alayna Gonzalez said just two people were arrested, both for non-violent crimes.

Erin Gabert of the parade committee said the crowd appeared somewhat smaller this year, but it was unclear if that was because people were still fearful after the shooting, or if the brisk, breezy weather kept people away.

Along the route, a man driving a Corvette in the parade stopped long enough to shake the hand of a police officer, and several others did, too. One float was pulled by a truck with a sign on the front that read, “Kansas City Strong.”

Parade organizers and police were diligent in taking steps to ensure safety. Gonzalez said 400 officers were on the scene. Uniformed officers lined the lengthy parade route, while many more in plainclothes mingled amid the green-clad crowd. Other officers watched from rooftops. A police helicopter hovered above the parade.

The Super Bowl rally shooting showed, though, that there are limitations to what can be done to stop a sudden outbreak of violence. About 800 officers were on the streets that day when the shots rang out toward the end of the Feb. 14 rally.

Police said two groups of people became agitated, apparently because each group didn’t like the way members of the other were looking at them. Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old radio personality, was standing nearby when she was fatally struck.

Last month, two men were charged with second-degree murder and other crimes. Three other people were charged Monday, accused of illegally purchasing high-powered rifles and guns with extended magazines, including guns involved in the shooting. And two juveniles are in custody on gun-related and resisting arrest charges.

Organizers of the St. Patrick’s Day parade and people involved in other big area parades met shortly after the shooting to compare emergency plans and discuss best practices to deal with potential problems.

Parade leaders urged paradegoers to leave their guns at home and to arrive with a plan for where to park and where to meet if people got separated. Families were encouraged to have kids wear something that identifies them. They also were encouraged to tell police or a volunteer if they saw anything out of the ordinary.

Gabert understood why some may have been hesitant to attend this year’s parade. Those who did, she said, appeared to have a good time.

“It was nice to have some normalcy and feel good, and enjoy St. Patrick’s Day,” she said.

It was a day to forget for Raheem Sterling despite his Chelsea side advancing to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Chelsea had a 2-0 lead at the break after goals from Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer, despite Sterling missing from the penalty spot.

But some awful defensive mistakes, and more poor finishing from Sterling, allowed Leicester back into the game.

Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke went on to give the Blues a 4-2 victory over ten-man Foxes who saw Callum Doyle sent off in the 77th minute.

Mail Sport’s Kieran Lynch gives his verdict on how Chelsea’s players performed on the day.

Chelsea made hard work of what should have been a comfortable victory against Leicester

    Chelsea

    Robert Sanchez – 5

Would have made Chelsea fans feel a little unnerved with the risks he was taking in the first-half on the ball. Axel Disasi was at fault for Leicester’s first goal but questions could be asked about why Sanchez was so far off his line.

    Malo Gusto – 6

Was given the BBC’s Man of the Match after a solid display. He is marked down however, as he would have needed to get a ticket back into the stadium after he was done by Stephy Mavididi’s fancy footwork for Leicester’s equaliser.

    Axel Disasi – 5

What was he doing for Leicester’s first goal? Yes, he was under a bit of pressure but he just needed to play a simple back-pass to Sanchez and his error brought Leicester back into the game.

    Trevoh Chalobah – 6

Lost the ball on several occasions while trying to play out from the back. His partnership with Disasi looked weak at times.

    Marc Cucurella – 7

Showed great tenacity to get forward and tap home the opener. Not always been great defensively for Chelsea but he was the best of the four for Mauricio Pochettino’s side today.

Axel Disasi's disastrous backpass gave Leicester a route back into the game, while Robert Sanchez had several nervy moments in goal which kept Chelsea fans at edge

One of Marc Cucurella's better games for Chelsea as he bagged their opener in the victory

    Moises Caicedo – 6

A solid but unremarkable performance which sums up his performances this season.

    Cole Palmer – 7

Scored his 16th goal of the season in all competitions to double Chelsea’s lead in the first-half. Not his fault, but it could have been an easier afternoon if Raheem Sterling didn’t take the ball off him for the penalty.

    Conor Gallagher – 6

Calm and composed on the ball in a solid performance before he joins up with Gareth Southgate’s squad.

    Raheem Sterling – 3

Was energetic and got an assist but in truth, it was an absolute nightmare of a day for the winger.

He missed a penalty, then should have scored a one-on-one opportunity and was booed by the Chelsea crowd after sending a free-kick into Row Z in the second-half. The boos for Mudryk being substituted was telling too. A day he will want to forget about and quickly.

    Mykhailo Mudryk – 7

Is showing signs of improvement and his energy was appreciated by the Chelsea fans who were not happy that he was taken off with over ten minutes to go at 2-2.

    Nicolas Jackson – 8

Chelsea’s best player and Leicester could not deal with his pace. Showed a great burst of speed to set up Cucurella’s opener before catching out Callum Doyle who was sent off for a challenge on the striker mid-way through the second-half.

    Manager

    Mauricio Pochettino – 7

Decision to bring Mudryk off instead of Sterling didn’t go down well but his substitutes killed the game off in the second-half.

    Substitutes

    Carney Chukwuemeka – 7

Proved the match winner sliding in his finish under Stolarczyk after coming off the bench.

Nicolas Jackson was electric with his pace creating Chelsea’s first goal and also leading to Leicester’s Callum Doyle getting sent off

    Noni Madueke – 7

The England Under-21 winger scored a stunning solo goal with the last kick of the game.

    Ben Chilwell – N/A

Unused subs Petrovic; Badiashile, Thiago Silva, Acheampong; Harrison; Washington.

    Leicester

    Stolarczyk 6; Choudhury 6, Faes 6, Vestergaard 4, Doyle 4; Winks 6, Ndidi 6; Fatawu 6, Dewsbury-Hall 7, Mavididi 7.5; Daka 6

Those walking through the milling streets of downtown Mexico City on Friday were greeted with a strange and sleepy sight.

Lolling with bright blue yoga mats, sleeping masks and travel pillows, hundreds of Mexicans laid sprawled out on the ground at the base of the city’s iconic Monument to the Revolution to take a nap. Dubbed the “mass siesta,” the event was in commemoration of World Sleep Day.

It was also meant to be a protest to push for sleep to be considered an essential part of health and wellness.

Some participants wrapped themselves in bright orange blankets, while others prepped their phones to play soothing music as they slept.

Among the nappers was 52-year-old mariachi musician Manuel Magaña, who was popping in earbuds next to his wife, and 9-year-old daughter, who fell asleep holding hands. Magaña heard about the event on the news while he was looking for something fun to do with his granddaughter.

He said the idea struck a chord with him because as a mariachi he would work long and irregular hours, often going to bed as the sun would come up.

“As a musician I work at night, and I rarely sleep well during the day. Sometimes we forget to eat, sometimes all we get is a little nap,” he said.

The event was organized by the Center for Sleep and Neurosciences and the Mexican Society for the Investigation of Medicine and Sleep (SOMIMS).

As participants began to drift to sleep, organizers on stage chanted and lead participants through the meditation. They also listed off tips for helping people fall asleep, like getting plenty of natural light during the day and turning their phone off at night.

Oscar Sánchez Escandón, a director of the event and president of SOMIMS, said the event was meant to highlight “sleep inequality” around the world.

“We live in a society that is full of economic, social and political commitments, where everything matters other than rest. That can have a strong impact on health,” he said.

Nearly half of Mexicans are reported to have trouble sleeping, according to a study by the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Mexico was listed as the most overworked country in the world by a 2019 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development report, which compared working hours among dozens of countries across the planet.

Last year, Mexico’s congress debated a proposed reform to officially lower the weekly work hours from 48 – the average for many Latin American nations – to 40, standard for much of the world. The initiative was put forward by Mexico’s ruling party, Morena, but the debate got kicked back to 2024.

Gabriela Filio, a 49-year-old nurse, brought along her 25-year-old daughter with the hopes that Mexico’s younger generations would push for a better work balance.

“We are in a country where the paychecks often don’t add up. Sometimes we have to work two jobs, but we also need to make sure to care for our sleep quality,” Filio said, stretching out to take a quick rest.
