The Biden administration finalized its crackdown on gas cars Wednesday, with the Environmental Protection Agency announcing drastic climate regulations meant to ensure more than two-thirds of passenger cars and light trucks sold by 2032 are electric or hybrid vehicles.

The EPA rule imposes strict limits on tailpipe pollution, limits the agency says can be met if 56% of new vehicles sold in the US are electric by eight years from now, along with 13% that are plug-in hybrids or other partially electric cars.

That would be a huge increase over current EV sales, which rose to 7.6% of new vehicle sales last year, up from 5.8% in 2022.

The Biden administration’s rules come as sales of electric vehicles, which are needed to meet the standards, have begun to slow AP
“Let me be clear: Our final rule delivers the same, if not more, pollution reduction than we set out in our proposal,’’ EPA Administrator Michael Regan said. AP

The rules unveiled Wednesday are a scaled-down version of regulations proposed last April and withdrawn after backlash from the auto industry, but still represent the most aggressive attack on internal combustion of any country in the world.

The new rule slows implementation of stricter pollution standards from 2027 through 2029, before ramping up to near the level the EPA preferred by 2032.

“Our final rule delivers the same, if not more, pollution reduction than we set out in our proposal,’’ EPA Administrator Michael Regan told reporters, adding the rules would prevent more than 7 billion tons of carbon emissions over the next three decades and provide nearly $100 billion in benefits including lower health care costs, and more than $60 billion in reduced annual costs for fuel, maintenance and repairs.

“These new standards are so important,” he said, “for public health, for American jobs, for our economy and for our planet.”

Industry groups slammed the regulations, with the American Petroleum Institute saying they would “make new gas-powered vehicles unavailable or prohibitively expensive for most Americans. For them, this wildly unpopular policy is going to feel and function like a ban.

“Whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, Congress has to make a decision whether to protect consumer choice, US manufacturing workers and our hard-won energy security by overturning this deeply flawed regulation,” it added. “Short of that, our organizations are certainly prepared to challenge it in court.”

“These regulations represent yet another step toward an unrealistic transition to electric vehicles that Americans do not want and cannot afford,” added Sen. Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV).

The changes appear aimed at addressing strong industry opposition to the accelerated ramp-up of EVs, along with public reluctance to fully embrace the new technology. AP
In September, Donald Trump insisted Biden’s embrace of electric vehicles — a key component of his clean-energy agenda — would ultimately lead to lost jobs. AP
The new rule slows implementation of stricter pollution standards from 2027 through 2029, after the auto industry called proposed benchmarks unworkable. AP

As Biden faces a tight re-election battle, he is juggling his stated commitment to lowering greenhouse emissions while courting the auto manufacturing industry, whose voters are a key demographic in battleground states like Michigan.

Former President Donald Trump and Biden’s Republican opponents have accused the president of handing the economic advantage to China with the restrictions, since many electric vehicles are manufactured in America’s great geopolitical rival..

“He’s selling you out to China,” Trump told a crowd of Michigan auto workers in September. “He’s selling you out to the environmental extremists and the radical left.”

WASHINGTON: A Georgia judge on Wednesday said Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump and eight of his co-defendants in the state’s criminal election subversion case could appeal a ruling that let lead prosecutor Fani Willis remain on the case.
Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee’s decision cleared the way for the former US president and the others to ask a Georgia state appeals court to consider whether Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, should be disqualified over her romantic relationship with a former deputy, Nathan Wade. McAfee, who approved the request for an immediate appeal, had ruled on Friday that Willis and her office could continue prosecuting the case as long as Wade withdrew, which he agreed to do. But McAfee said the relationship created an “appearance of impropriety.”

    Congratulations!

You have successfully cast your vote

Trump is the Republican candidate challenging Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 5 US election. The appeal presents another opportunity for him to delay progress in the case as he campaigns to win back the presidency. It is one of four criminal prosecutions for Trump, who has pleaded not guilty in each and portrayed them as politically motivated.

McAfee indicated he would continue addressing other legal issues while the appeals court considers whether to take up the disqualification bid. A trial date has not yet been set.

“The defense is optimistic that appellate review will lead to the case being dismissed and the D.A. being disqualified,” Steve Sadow, Trump’s lead lawyer on the case, said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Willis’ office declined to comment on the appeal, but said prosecutors will work to move the case toward trial “as quickly as possible.”

Trump and the eight co-defendants have argued that Willis received financial perks from the romance with Wade, giving her an incentive to prolong the prosecution for her personal benefit.

Willis has denied receiving an improper benefit and argued that the relationship had no impact on her handling of the criminal case.

Trump and 14 co-defendants have pleaded not guilty to racketeering and other charges stemming from what prosecutors allege was a scheme to overturn Trump’s narrow defeat in Georgia in the 2020 election. Four others who had been co-defendants in the case have pleaded guilty in deals with the prosecutors.

The United States Supreme Court has lifted a pause on a controversial law that allows Texas state authorities to detain and deport migrants and asylum seekers, a measure critics have dubbed the “show me your papers” law.

The top court on Tuesday voted six to three to allow the law, Texas Senate Bill 4 (SB4), to go immediately into effect.

Legal scholars, however, have argued that the law subverts the federal government’s constitutional authority to carry out immigration enforcement.

Rights groups have also warned it threatens to increase racial profiling and imperil the rights of asylum seekers. The American Civil Liberties Union, for instance, called SB4 “one of the most extreme anti-immigrant laws ever passed by any state legislature” in the US.

Tuesday’s Supreme Court action does not weigh the merits of the law, which continues to be challenged in lower courts. It instead vacates a lower court ruling that paused the law from going into effect.

The administration of President Joe Biden has challenged SB4 on the grounds that the law is unconstitutional.

Migrant advocates, as well as civil rights groups, have also pledged to continue the legal fight to render SB4 void.

Their challenge could eventually again reach the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, which determines matters of constitutionality.

“While we are outraged over this decision, we will continue to work with our partners to have SB4 struck down,” Jennefer Canales-Pelaez, a policy lawyer and strategist at the Immigration Legal Resource Center, said in a statement.

“The horrific and clearly unconstitutional impacts of this law on communities in Texas is terrifying.”

Tami Goodlette, the director of the Beyond Borders Program at the Texas Civil Rights Project, said the Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday “needlessly puts people’s lives at risk”.

“Everyone, no matter if you have called Texas home for decades or just got here yesterday, deserves to feel safe and have the basic right of due process,” Goodlette said in a statement.

‘Lead us to victory in court’

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and state Attorney General Ken Paxton, both Republicans, have argued the SB4 runs parallel to, but does not conflict with, federal US law.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Abbott called the Supreme Court decision “clearly a positive development”.

Paxton, whose office is defending the law in court, said it was a “huge win”.

“As always, it’s my honor to defend Texas and its sovereignty, and to lead us to victory in court,” he wrote.

The pair have become national conservative figureheads in their criticism of the Biden administration’s border policy, an issue set to dominate the 2024 presidential elections.

Texas, a southwestern state, shares a 3,145km (1,254-mile) border with Mexico. Texas leaders have said the new law is needed to control the record numbers of irregular crossings along the border in recent years.

Signed into law in December, SB4 is an extension of Abbott’s “Operation Lone Star“, a border security programme that launched in March 2021 and has since grown into a $12bn initiative.

Under the programme, the governor has planted razor wire along the border, built a floating fence in the Rio Grande, surged the number of Texas National Guard members in the area and increased the amount of funds available to local law enforcement to target migrants and asylum seekers.

    ‘Chaos and abuse’

It was not clear on Tuesday if local authorities would immediately begin enforcing SB4, which makes it a state crime to cross the Texas-Mexico border outside of regular ports of entry.

Those arrested face up to six months in jail for an initial offence, with repeat offenders facing up to 20 years.

Judges are permitted to drop the charges if a person agrees to be deported to Mexico, regardless of their country of origin or if they have an asylum claim in the US.

Mexico’s government had previously decried the law as “inhumane”.

Following Tuesday’s decision, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre called the law “another example of Republican officials politicising the border while blocking real solutions”.

For its part, the nonprofit Human Rights Watch on Tuesday said the law violates US asylum obligations and federal law.

“National governments are entitled to regulate their borders so long as they comply with international human rights and refugee law,” Bob Libal, a Texas consultant at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

“But allowing Texas to run with its draconian system of criminalisation and returns of asylum seekers is a recipe for chaos and abuse.”

    By ERIC TUCKER (Associated Press)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for Donald Trump urged the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to dismiss an indictment charging the former president with conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election, renewing their arguments that he is immune from prosecution for official acts taken in the White House.

Lower courts have already twice rejected the immunity claims, but Trump’s lawyers will get a fresh chance to press their case before the Supreme Court when the justices hear arguments on April 25. The high court’s decision to consider the matter has left the criminal case on hold pending the outcome of the appeal, making it unclear whether special counsel Jack Smith will be able to put the ex-president on trial before November’s election.

In a brief filed Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers repeated many of the same arguments that judges have already turned aside, asserting that a president “cannot function, and the Presidency itself cannot retain its vital independence, if the President faces criminal prosecution for official acts once he leaves office.”

“A denial of criminal immunity would incapacitate every future President with de facto blackmail and extortion while in office, and condemn him to years of post-office trauma at the hands of political opponents,” the lawyers wrote. “The threat of future prosecution and imprisonment would become a political cudgel to influence the most sensitive and controversial Presidential decisions, taking away the strength, authority, and decisiveness of the Presidency.”

Smith’s team has said ex-presidents do not enjoy absolute immunity and that, in any event, the steps Trump is accused of taking in his failed but frantic effort to remain in power after he lost to Democrat Joe Biden would not count as official presidential acts.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the case, and a three-judge federal appeals panel in Washington have both agreed with Smith, but the case — once scheduled for trial on March 4 — has been effectively frozen for months as the appeal continues to wind through the courts.

Trump’s lawyers also told the justices that in the event they don’t accept his immunity arguments, they should send the case back to Chutkan for additional “fact-finding.” Such a move would result in even lengthier delays before a trial could be scheduled.

The case is one of four state and federal criminal prosecutions that Trump is facing as he seeks to reclaim the White House. He and his lawyers have sought to delay the cases from proceeding to trial, a strategy that to date has yielded some success for the ex-president.

Of those four, only one — a case in New York charging Trump in connection with hush money payments meant to suppress claims of an extramarital sexual encounter — is on track to start in the next several months. The judge in that case delayed the trial last week until at least mid April as he seeks answers about a last-minute evidence dump that the former president’s lawyers said has hampered their ability to prepare their defense.

Ohio voters are at the polls Tuesday to choose a Republican challenger to incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. The competitive Senate seat in a red state is considered a must-win for Republicans who hope to regain control of the chamber in November.

The race will also serve as an early measure of how much Donald Trump’s MAGA seal of approval is worth in a year when Trump once again tops the Republican ticket.

Once a three-man race, by Tuesday the contest was down to two leading candidates: State Sen. Matt Dolan, who was endorsed by Ohio’s popular Republican governor, Mike DeWine. Businessman Bernie Moreno is a strong contender, boosted by an endorsement form Donald Trump.

Ohio, a largely white working-class state that has historically held purple-state status, has reddened over the past few years. In 2020, President Joe Biden became the first president since 1960 to win the presidential general election without winning Ohio.

Secretary of State Frank LaRose is also in the race, but LaRose has fallen behind in recent weeks, surrendering an early lead. Despite his name recognition, LaRose lost momentum in part because Dolan and Moreno were able to self-fund their own campaigns.

Dolan’s family owns the Cleveland Guardians baseball team. Moreno has made his multimillion dollar living as a car dealer and investor in blockchain technology.

    The Trump test

Across the country, Republicans are closely watching the Buckeye State’s primary race for signs of Trump’s hold on Republican voters.

How Moreno fares Tuesday will offer an early test of whether or not Trump’s endorsement has appreciated in value since 2020 and 2022, when his handpicked candidates underperformed in key races.

In 2020, Trump lost reelection and Republicans lost both chambers of Congress. In 2022, Republicans won a slim majority in the House and lost Senate seats in red states with weak candidates.

Trump’s spotty track record provided a solid line of attack for his Republican presidential primary opponents, before he secured the nomination earlier this month.

“Under Trump, Republicans keep losing,” former presidential candidate Nikki Haley posted on X, before she dropped out of the race. “Let’s stop losing with Trump. Let’s make the GOP a winning party again.”

On Sunday, DeWine dodged questions about whether Trump’s Moreno endorsement would be enough to swing Tuesday’s primary in Moreno’s favor.

Spokespeople for the Moreno and Dolan campaigns did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

    Concerns about Moreno

Going into Tuesday’s election, a large pool of Ohio voters remained undecided.

On Saturday, Trump held a rally near Dayton, Ohio intended to give Moreno a pre-primary boost.

“Bernie is a fantastic guy. He’s getting some very tough Democrat fake treatment right now,” Trump said. “Don’t leave me alone, Bernie….Ohio needs [you] to defeat your horrendous radical left Democrat senator Sherrod Brown, who pretends he’s my best friend.”

Moreno’s campaign took a hit last week after the Associated Press reported that a 2008 account on the casual sex website Adult Friend Finder was linked to Moreno’s email account.

The profile linked to Moreno was reportedly seeking “Men for 1-on-1 sex,” according to the AP. Moreno has opposed LGBTQ+ rights, said his lawyer says a former intern of Moreno’s created the dating account as a “prank.”

Nonetheless, the burgeoning scandal has raised new questions about whether Moreno — who has never held public office — would be able to unseat Brown come November.

Democrats have seized on the headwinds facing Moreno, In the days leading up to Tuesday’s primary, Democratic political groups have poured millions of dollars into ads that seek to boost Moreno over Dolan.

Democrats “obviously think that Dolan is the strongest candidate, so that’s why I’m supporting Matt Dolan,” DeWine said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union”.

“Ohio is maybe one of the states that decides who controls the United States Senate. So there’s a lot at stake in this election,” said DeWine.

Former US president Donald Trump is facing a nightmare financial scenario, with the court-imposed deadline fast approaching for him to front up a massive bond, and his lawyers now insisting he cannot provide it.

Mr Trump is under court order to pay the $US454 million bond (about $700 million) after losing his civil fraud trial in New York. The state’s Supreme Court found he and his business, the Trump Organisation, had chronically misrepresented the value of their assets to fraudulently secure more favourable loans and interest rates.

“In order to borrow more and at lower rates, the defendants submitted blatantly false financial data to accountants, resulting in fraudulent financial statements,” Justice Arthur Engoron wrote in his judgment.

“Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological. They are accused only of inflating asset values to make more money. The documents prove this over and over again. This is a venial sin, not a mortal sin.

“Yet the defendants are incapable of admitting the error of their ways.”

Justice Engoron concluded that Mr Trump and his business were “likely to continue their fraudulent ways” unless the court imposed “significant injunctive relief”. Hence the whopping financial penalty.

If Mr Trump wishes to continue with an appeal against the judgment, he must either pay the full amount or secure a bond by Monday, March 25.

In that event, an insurance company would guarantee the amount owed under the judgment in return for a fee, and would then owe that amount to the court, should Mr Trump’s appeal fail.

Without a bond, New York’s Attorney-General Letitia James could begin to seize some of Mr Trump’s real estate assets.

In a court filing on Monday, the former president’s legal team said it had proven “practically impossible” to secure a bond of such an immense size, and claimed to have approached 30 insurance companies, without success, as part of its “diligent efforts”.

“The amount of the judgment, with interest, exceeds $US464 million, and very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude,” his lawyers said.

They included supporting testimony from Gary Giuletti, an executive at the insurance firm Lockton Companies, who said Mr Trump’s efforts “included reaching out to virtually every major surety in the market and spending countless hours negotiating with one of the largest insurance companies in the world”.

“Despite scouring the market, we have been unsuccessful in our effort to obtain a bond for the judgment amount,” Mr Giuletti said.

“Obtaining an appeal bond for $US464 million is a practical impossibility under the circumstances presented.”

Mr Trump’s cause is not helped by the nature of the judgment against him. Securing a bond would require him to provide an insurance company with information about his finances – the very same sort of information he’s lied about in the past, according to the court ruling.

Ms James has indicated she’s more than willing to seize Mr Trump’s assets.

“We are prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to New Yorkers,” she said.

Trump goes on angry posting spree

Mr Trump himself wrote about the case repeatedly on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday morning, publishing nine separate posts in the space of two hours.

“The only FRAUD in the Peekaboo James case, our failed and disgusting New York State Attorney-General, was her convincing ‘Judge’ Arthur Engoron to put a value on Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, of just $18 million, when it is worth 50 to 100 times that amount,” Mr Trump said.

“This was fraudulently and illegally done, working closely together in a corrupt Communist system, to set their NARRATIVE after learning that their Values and Facts were completely wrong. Businesses will flee the state as Migrant Crime and Violence continues to flourish. I paid $300 million in Taxes, and this is what I get. WITCH HUNT!!!”

In his ruling, Justice Engoron noted that an independent assessor had appraised the market value of Mar-a-Lago at between $US18 million and $US27.6 million. Mr Trump, however, had claimed its value was somewhere between $US426.5 million and $US612 million – described by the judge as an overappraisal of “at least 2,300 per cent”.

Mr Trump’s current insistence that Mar-a-Lago is worth “up to 100 times” the $US18 million appraisal would put its value at $US1.8 billion.

“Any business thinking about moving into New York State is CRAZY!” Mr Trump continued.

In his subsequent posts, he described Justice Engoron as a “Crazed, Trump Hating, Rogue Judge”, insisted “I DID NOTHING WRONG!”, and claimed that being required to put up a bond before finishing his appeal was “a first”.

“I shouldn’t have to put up any money, being forced by the Corrupt Judge and AG, until the end of the appeal. That’s the way the system works!”

Appeal bonds are in fact common in US law, and are imposed to ensure the party appealing a court’s decision – in this case, Mr Trump – will pay the required amount if his appeal fails.

“The Corrupt Political Hacks in New York, Judge and AG, are asking me to put up massive amounts of money before I am allowed to appeal the ridiculous decision. Never done before,” Mr Trump claimed.

“No jury, no victim, full disclaimer clause, happy banks. ELECTION INTERFERENCE! WITCH HUNT!”

Mr Trump did not request a jury in his fraud trial. Justice Engoron said he would not have granted such a request anyway, as the state was seeking an equitable remedy – a clawback of ill-gotten financial gains – as opposed to damages, of the sort awarded to E. Jean Carroll in her defamation trial against the former president.

Many crimes do not involve specific “victims”. For example, you can be prosecuted for driving while drunk even if you get home safely, without harming anyone. Technically this is a victimless crime, yet you are still breaking the law.

Mr Trump was accused of inflating and deflating the value of his assets to gain an unfair competitive advantage, in the form of better loans or tax arrangements. Again, while there is no specific victim, this is illegal.

    ‘This is an outrage’

New York University law professor Ryan Goodman, appearing on CNN to discuss Mr Trump’s dilemma, was asked what would happen if Mr Trump failed to pay up.

“Then Letitia James seizes his property, puts liens on all of his assets and bank accounts,” Prof Goodman said.

“That is not restricted to New York. So (Ms James) probably, at this point, understands where he has different assets in Florida. Mar-a-Lago, and elsewhere.

“It would be fought out in some part of the courts. But for that period of time, (the asset) really becomes unusable. And how does he get any additional business going when these are under foreclosure, or are being seized by the courts?”

Meanwhile former Trump aide Stephanie Grisham, who served as one of his White House press secretaries, said the self-described billionaire’s struggle to front up the necessary money would be “very, very hard on his ego”.

She nominated 40 Wall Street, a property Mr Trump owns in New York, as the one he’d be most likely to sacrifice.

“I mean, he would hate it. But I think if (Ms James) tried to seize Mar-a-Lago or Bedminster or Trump Tower, even, I mean those are his babies,” said Ms Grisham.

“Any of the properties with golf courses, I think, would absolutely devastate him. It will be interesting to see what she goes for.”

There is building resentment at the situation from Mr Trump’s supporters, who feel the case against him was motivated by politics, and are now loudly wondering why his party’s biggest donors are not stepping forward to help.

“Why are there no Republican multibillionaires offering to lend President Trump the funds to file his appeal in the outrageous case?” said Mark Levin, a conservative broadcaster.

“Are none of them liquid enough to help, or join with others to help? This is an outrage.”

Donald Trump has ruled out Vivek Ramaswamy as his running mate and is instead eyeing the entrepreneur for a Cabinet job, according to people familiar with the matter, as the Republican presidential nominee sizes up a possible administration.
Trump personally told Ramaswamy he won’t be his vice presidential pick, according to people briefed on the discussion, but is considering him for posts including Homeland Security secretary. Some Trump allies see Ramaswamy as ideal for the job because they say he excels at public speaking and, as an Indian-American son of an immigrant, could neutralize criticism of sweeping immigration restrictions.
Their conversation is just one of many Trump has had recently with allies about administration positions as he seized hold of the Republican nomination. Loyalty, ideological compatibility and perceived electoral power are the metrics by which Trump is evaluating possible picks, according to people familiar with the process who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Those who have impressed Trump and his team for possible Cabinet roles include another former GOP primary foe, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, as well as Representative Elise Stefanik and former US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.
Trump is looking for a running mate who isn’t motivated by the limelight, but who will help give him a measurable edge in the race against President Joe Biden, according to those familiar with his thinking. Trump has confided to close advisers and allies that none of the names circulating as potential running mates have impressed him much. His list of options has only grown longer, not shorter, according to people close to the former president.
Ousted US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is seen as a top candidate to serve as chief of staff. McCarthy, who turned down the job in Trump’s last term because he wanted to serve as speaker, has assets that Trump views positively including an understanding of Capitol Hill, federal agencies and budgets.
The former president and his advisers are eager to avoid what they see as a crucial mistake from the first term, when a chaotic transition effort and the appointment of series of top-level aides and Cabinet members who sought to constrain – rather than enable – Trump’s agenda stalled legislative and regulatory priorities.
His search has been assisted by not only top aides like Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, but also family members. Son-in-law Jared Kushner has recently increased his presence with the campaign, calling and texting to offer suggestions. The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., has voiced interest in a key transition role, partly to help block people from top jobs who are opposed by Trump loyalists known as “MAGA” hardliners.
But even as allies tout loyalists who would help impose strict immigration controls, new tariffs, deep cuts to the federal bureaucracy and a reordering of US foreign policy, Trump remains captivated by those he sees as successful, independently wealthy and well-dressed.
    Team of rivals
Jason Miller, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said it’s far too early to be speculating about who will fill Cabinet or senior roles. “Apparently somebody has decided to list out everyone who has ever met President Trump and is now speculating as to their potential participation in a second Trump administration. The truth is that unless you hear it directly from President Trump or his campaign, this is all b.s.” Miller said.
Those who have participated in the discussions describe a quintessentially Trump experience, in which the former president peppers the conversation with political observations and media critiques as a steady stream of food is served, while he keeps an eye on cable news or chooses his favorite musical selections over dinner at his Mar-a-Lago club.
The former president has repeatedly expressed admiration for Burgum, a billionaire who mounted a short-lived presidential bid. He has been discussed as a good fit to lead a transition – and possibly the Energy Department. Burgum, like Trump, is a supporter of fossil fuels.
Fellow US senators Lindsey Graham and John Thune have praised South Carolina Senator Tim Scott as a possible vice presidential pick.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is not expected to feature in a Trump administration following his futile attempt to challenge the former president in the primary. Trump regularly vents about DeSantis in private conversations. But the former opponents did have a phone conversation, which was kept secret, soon after DeSantis dropped out, according to people familiar with the discussion, who said their talk was surprisingly cordial.
Trump is known to change his mind about personnel and policy, but for now, he isn’t satisfied with his roster of vice presidential possibilities. Stefanik, the No. 3 House Republican, is seen as lacking a national profile, fundraising base, or ability to deliver her home of New York state, a long-held pipe dream for Trump, a Queens native. But she’s likely to have a Cabinet role, people close to Trump said.
Trump has complained that Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, one of his former White House press secretaries, waited too long to endorse him. Senator Katie Britt of Alabama botched her odds because of her widely-panned response to Biden’s State of the Union, and was already viewed skeptically by Trump hardliners as an ally of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
    Justice Department
Trump sees leadership at the nation’s top law enforcement agency as one of his most crucial decisions. Trump’s clashed with his attorneys general over the investigation into Russian election interference and later over his unsubstantiated claims the 2020 election was stolen. The Justice Department’s prosecution of the former president over his retention of classified documents and efforts to overturn his defeat have only raised the stakes.
Senate Republicans Mike Lee of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas are seen as possibilities for attorney general because it would likely be easy to secure their confirmation.
Trump has repeatedly discussed the idea of hiring lawyer Mike Davis, a former aide to Senator Chuck Grassley who previously worked at the Justice Department, possibly as acting attorney general, or as White House counsel. Mike Purpura, who represented Trump is in his first impeachment, is another person viewed as a strong contender for White House counsel.
FBI Director Christopher Wray, who Trump nominated in 2017 but has since earned his ire over statements on Ukraine and Jan. 6, is unlikely to remain if Trump is reelected, according to several people familiar with Trump’s planning. They said the expectation is that Wray would likely resign.
    Other agencies
Lighthizer and Trump’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson remain well liked by the former president and could be in line for a promotion.
John Ratcliffe, who served as intelligence director, is seen as a possible choice for that job – or Defense secretary or secretary of State. Nothing is decided, and it will likely be a game of musical chairs for top posts, with possibilities including Representative Mike Waltz of Florida, former National Security Council chief of staff Keith Kellogg, and Senators JD Vance of Ohio and Marco Rubio of Florida, according to people familiar with Trump’s current thinking.

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump say he’s unlikely to secure a bond for the nearly half-billion he and other defendants need to pause a judge’s February ruling in a New York civil fraud case.

They’re asking an appeals court to stay the judgment while Trump challenges it. The judgment, with accrued interest, saddled the defendants with a $464 million tab. In a nearly 5,000-page filing on Monday, Trump’s lawyers wrote that “a bond requirement of this enormous magnitude—effectively requiring cash reserves approaching $1 billion….is unprecedented.”

They called the finding “grossly disproportional” to the offenses Trump and others were found liable for, specifically a decade-long scheme to defraud banks and insurers using overvaluations of properties and Trump’s net worth.

“Very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude,” wrote the lawyers, Alina Habba, Clifford Robert, Christopher Kise and John Sauer.

Trump Organization general counsel Alan Garten wrote in the filing that surety companies are unwilling to accept real estate as collateral.

Garten said that the company “approached more than 30 surety companies, proposing to pledge as collateral a combination of cash or cash equivalents and unencumbered real estate holdings…[T]he vast majority simply do not have the financial strength to handle a bond of this size. Of those that do, the vast majority are unwilling to accept the risk associated with such a large bond.”

Trump’s filing in the case came one week after he posted a more than $90 million bond in order to appeal another recent legal defeat, a January decision by a federal jury that unanimously concluded he defamed the writer E. Jean Carroll. In that case, he secured a bond through a subsidiary of the insurance giant Chubb.

The filing includes an affidavit from an insurance executive who said he has “been in contact with some of the largest insurance carriers in the world in an effort to try and obtain a bond” for Trump in the case.

The executive, Gary Giuletti, president of private insurance firm Lockton Companies, wrote that he believes it “is not possible under the circumstances presented” for the defendants to secure a bond.

“Simply put, a bond of this size is rarely, if ever, seen,” Giuletti wrote.

Giuletti testified as an expert witness in Trump’s defense during the fraud trial, describing himself as a longtime friend who is a member of “a bunch of his clubs.” He is also an insurance broker doing business for the Trump Organization.

Judge Arthur Engoron was critical of Giuletti’s testimony during the trial, as well as the defense team’s decision to use him as a witness.

“In its over 20 years on the bench, this Court has never encountered an expert witness who not only was a close personal friend of a party, but also had a personal financial interest in the outcome of the case for which he is being offered as an expert,” Engoron wrote in his Feb. 16 ruling.

A spokesperson for Attorney General Letitia James declined to comment. James’ office has said Trump has until March 25 to put up a bond for the entire judgment in order to prevent her office from collecting the damages while he appeals. James has said the state could seek to seize property from Trump if he does not pay the judgment.

Former President Donald Trump’s declaration that if his second attempt at securing a second term in the White House fails then it will result in a “bloodbath” was taken entirely out of context by the Biden team and the media, according to his campaign.

Trump was speaking from an airfield in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday during a rally in support of Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, when the former president seemed to suggest another electoral loss would lead to widespread violence in the United States.

“If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country,” Trump said.

President Biden’s campaign was quick to call out the 45th president’s rhetoric, declaring Trump’s statements a further piece of evidence that his public cozying up to authoritarians like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is not just politics as usual, but a sign of his own authoritarian leanings.

“This is who Donald Trump is: a loser who gets beat by over 7 million votes and then instead of appealing to a wider mainstream audience doubles down on his threats of political violence,” Biden-Harris spokesperson James Singer said in a statement.

Trump’s weekend comments risk a repeat of the days leading up to his exit from the White House in 2021, Singer said.

“He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge,” he said.

According to Trump’s campaign, the “bloodbath” comment is being taken out of context from a larger speech. The former president was not indicating any sort of violence, they say, but was instead referring to the impact Chinese auto manufacturing will have on U.S industry and job markets, his team said.

Trump’s remarks, according to a transcript of his speech, do indeed seem to be directed at Chinese President Xi Jinping over his administration’s apparent intentions to build Chinese cars in Mexico to U.S. standards and aimed toward American buyers.

“Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now and you think you’re going to get that, you’re going to not hire Americans and you’re going to sell the cars to us? No. We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars,” Trump said just before the “bloodbath” comments.

The transcript proves the Biden campaign is grasping at straws, according to Trump’s team.

“Joe Biden is allowing China to take over the car industry and Americans are being laid off left and right. It is an economic disaster that only President Donald Trump can turn around,” Make America Great Again Inc. Spokesman Alex Pfeiffer said in a statement.

Trump’s campaign went on to point out that Merriam-Webster’s dictionary says that a bloodbath, in addition to the straight-forward somewhat biblical-sounding connotations of its primary definition, also can be taken to mean “a major economic disaster.”

In other presidential politics news, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the black-sheep scion to the once-powerful Kennedy family political operation, is expected to announce his running mate later this week. Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and noted vaccine skeptic, has floated New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rogers and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura as potential Vice Presidential picks.

However, according to reporting by Mediaite, Kennedy will use his Thursday announcement in California to add Nicole Shanahan, a wealthy West Coast attorney and entrepreneur who was once married to Google’s Sergey Brinn, to his long shot bid for the White House.

Prominent conservatives on social media tore into several media outlets this weekend for appearing to take former President Trump’s comments at a recent Ohio rally out of context.

Conservative commentators, Republican politicians, and others slammed outlets like Rolling Stone, NBC News, and CBS News for sharing headlines about Trump claiming there would be a “bloodbath” if he didn’t win re-election that didn’t mention he was referring to the automotive industry, Fox News reports.

These critics claimed this was a new, anti-Trump “hoax” being manufactured in real time.

Trump’s comments came during his recent rally in Ohio on Saturday, where he mentioned putting tariffs on Chinese-made cars that China would sell to Americans.

Addressing Communist Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Trump stated, “If you’re listening, President Xi — and you and I are friends — but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now … you’re going to not hire Americans and you’re going to sell the cars to us, no. We’re going to put a 100 per cent tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.”

Immediately after, the former president said, “Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars. They’re building massive factories.”

Prominent media reported on the quote, sharing headlines simply stating that Trump warned of a “bloodbath” if he didn’t win.

A headline from Politico stated, “Trump says country faces ‘bloodbath’ if Biden wins in November.”

NBC News’ headline stated, “Trump says there will be a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses the election.” The headline for CBS News stated, “In Ohio campaign rally, Trump says there will be a “bloodbath” if he loses November election.”

Additionally, Rolling Stone’s headline read, “Trump Says There Will Be a ‘Bloodbath’ and Elections Will End if He Isn’t Reelected,” and NPR wrote, “Trump says some migrants are ‘not people’, and warns of ‘bloodbath’ if he loses” for its headline.

When asked about Trump’s comments by NBC News, his campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt clarified them: “Biden’s policies will create an economic bloodbath for the auto industry and autoworkers.”

Conservatives ripped into these headlines on the platform X.

Billionaire and X owner, Elon Musk, criticised NBC News’ headline, calling it “deceptive.”

He posted, “This headline is deceptive, as he was referring to the auto industry. Shame on NBC.”

Conservative commentator, US military veteran, and author, Sean Parnell, blasted NBC as well, posting, “NBC pushing the bloodbath hoax now. Unreal. These ‘news’ agencies need a complete overhaul. They are no different than state run media propaganda.”

Popular anti-leftist account “End Wokeness” shared a screenshot of several of these headlines together, and wrote, “We are witnessing the invention of the ‘bloodbath’ hoax in real-time. Unfortunately for them, we have X.”

Elon Musk commented on End Wokeness’ post, stating, “Yup, hoax-making in process. And it is surprisingly effective.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., shared End Wokeness’ post and commented: “The Democrats and the media lie constantly about what Pres Trump says. They twist his phrases and sarcasm and tell the public he said something he did not. When Trump said there will be a bloodbath if Biden wins, he was talking about the auto industry and he’s RIGHT!”

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, posted, “Donald Trump said that a bloodbath would happen to the American auto industry if Biden kept on promoting Chinese made EVs. He of course is 100 per cent correct. All other reporting about his ‘bloodbath’ comment is complete propaganda. The media should be ashamed.”

Conservative commentator Carmine Sabia shared images of multiple leftists claiming Trump’s quote is evidence he is calling for violence.

He wrote, “The shameless lying on Trump’s #bloodbath speech is not stunning. This is what Democrats do and they are supported by a corrupt media that lost the trust of the American people because of it.”
