“Abbott Elementary” and its creator and star, Quinta Brunson, are out of legal detention.

A judge in New York dismissed a lawsuit against Brunson, 34, and ABC on Tuesday filed by writer Christine Davis in 2021, claiming the hit sitcom was a “veritable knock-off” of her show, “This School Year.”

According to the court decision obtained by The Post, the judge found that “no discerning observer would find the works to be substantially similar.”

“Abbott Elementary” first aired on Dec. 7, 2021.
    ABC

“Indeed, as demonstrated by the Court’s analysis of each of Plaintiff’s alleged similarities, the two works use qualitatively different plots, themes, and characters to cast different perspectives on the experiences of teachers in under-resources, inner-city public school settings,” the document says of the differences between the two shows.

Davis wrote her mockumentary-style script, based in a New York City public school, in 2018, and registered with the copyright office in early 2020. Brunson’s creation, set in Philadelphia, premiered on ABC in 2021.

“’This School Year’ blends comedy was a harder-edged look at the uncertainties and challenges teachers face, with Ms. Davis’ pragmatic goal of securing tenure as a key example,” the docs state.

Bradley Cooper guest starred in last week’s episode. Disney

“’Abbott Elementary,’ on the other hand, employs a comparatively lighter tone, utilizing Ms. Teagues’ [Brunson’s character] comedic naïveté and persistent optimism to emphasize the resource constraints and other limitations faced by teachers working in such settings,” the decision reads.

The Post has contacted reps for Brunson and ABC for comment.

Davis’ lawsuit previously claimed that many of the “Abbott Elementary” characters are “nearly identical” to “This School Year,” and alleged that the first few episodes have similar plotlines.

“Abbott Elementary” takes place in Philadelphia. Disney

“Without [Davis’] permission, license, authority, or consent, [Brunson & ABC] knowingly and illegally used [Davis’] works to create the ‘Abbot[t] Elementary’ television show,” the suit claimed.

“Abbott Elementary” also stars Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, William Stanford Davis and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

“Maestro” star Bradley Cooper appeared in last week’s episode, which aired after the Oscars.

The show has won four Emmys, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Brunson.

“Abbott Elementary” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC and streams next day on Hulu.

Disneyland’s Critter Country area will temporarily close beginning on May 1 as officials work to reimagine two retail shops, theme park officials announced Monday.

“Add another stop to your trip down to the bayou because two reimagined retail stores inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ ‘The Princess and the Frog’ are coming to Disneyland Resort,” the Disney Parks Blog said.

Briar Patch and the left-hand side of Pooh Corner will be reimagined into Ray’s Berets and Louis’ Critter Club, respectively.

    • Disneyland

Ray’s Berets will sell items like headwear, apparel, accessories and toys that are themed to firefly Raymond and his “firefly kin.” Louis’ Critter Club will sell items like apparel, accessories and home decor themed to Princess Tiana and other critters, according to the Disney Parks Blog.

Disneyland officials did note that the treats side of Pooh Corner will continue to sell merchandise from Hundred Acre Wood and popular treats like Tigger tails.

The announcement comes as crews continue to work on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, formerly known as Splash Mountain. The reimagined attraction is slated to open later this year at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Florida.

“Teams are working hard to bring Tiana’s Bayou Adventure to life, and we’re continuing to invest in the improvement of overall pathways and surrounding areas to help provide a great guest experience when the attraction opens,” the Disney Parks Blog said.

The storyline for “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” will pick up where the 2009 animated feature left off.

“Walt Disney Imagineering is creating an original, next-chapter story for Tiana. Within the attraction queue, guests will discover that she continues to grow her business with Tiana’s Foods – an employee-owned cooperative,” the Disney Parks Blog announced last year.

“Combining her talents with those of the local community, Tiana has transformed an aging salt mine and built a beloved brand.”

Along with the new ride and retail shops, Princess Tiana fans can dine at Tiana’s Palace, the restaurant the character fought to open throughout the animated feature, or shop at Eudora’s Chic Boutique at Disneyland.

The ride will open during the summer at Walt Disney World. A specific opening date for Disneyland’s version of the ride hasn’t been announced.

The organiser of the viral Willy Wonka “immersive experience” says the trainwreck of an event ruined his life after he received hundreds of hate messages in the fallout.

Billy Coull, director of the House of Illuminati organisation behind the Willy Wonka-inspired event in Scotland, has broken his silence over the PR disaster.

Families who had paid $44 to attend the “magical realm” arrived to find a sparsely decorated warehouse in Glasgow that they compared to a meth lab with children left in tears of disappointment and horror.

Mr Coull said since images from the event went viral online last month he had received “hundreds and hundreds” of hate mail.

“My life is ruined,” he explained in the Channel 5 special Wonka: The Scandal That Rocked Britain that aired in the UK last week.

“I have lost my friends. I’ve lost the love of my life. I was made out to be the face of all evil. And genuinely, that’s really not the case.”

Mr Coull explained that the team had hired a venue too large for the scale of the event and projection equipment that never arrived let them down.

“I was gutted,” he said “But I believed that we could push on.”

“I was hoping for an event that would be joyful, happy. I wanted people to experience happiness.”

The event titled Willy’s Chocolate Experience invited fans to journey into “a universe where confectionary dreams are brought to life” that included “mind-expanding projections, optical marvels and exhibits that transport you into the realm of creativity” and “wondrous creations and enchanting surprises at every turn”.

The attraction was not affiliated with the Warner Bros. movie Wonka, despite the event’s marketing coming as close as possible to suggesting it was based on author Roald Dahl’s creation.

The event was compared to a meth lab.

There was also limited lollies on offer even though children had been promised “sweet delights and confections”.

In another shock to customers, there were actors who delivered what sounded like AI-generated lines to which Mr Coull admitted he did run his scripts through AI, but only to check spelling and continuity of the lines.

Scotland police were eventually called to the scene and the event was shut down.

As a result of the failure, Mr Coull refunded tickets and issued an apology for the “very stressful and frustrating day”.

“Unfortunately, last minute we were let down in many areas of our event and tried our best to continue on and push through and now realise we probably should have cancelled first thing this morning instead,” a statement said.

    V for Vendetta Warner Bros.

In retrospect, perhaps a revolving door would have been a better choice for Peacock‘s name and logo. Peacock may get some great movies, but it almost never holds on to any of them for any extended length of time. We’ve lost track of how many times the Back to the Future movies have come and gone, and they’re leaving Peacock again at the end of March. That’s the same fate that befell The Hunger Games films, and they’ve only been back on Peacock for a month!

Outside of a major shift in Peacock’s strategy, the only solution for subscribers is to watch everything you can while you can. And since March is almost over, you’ve got a very limited time to catch our picks for the three great movies leaving Peacock that you have to watch. Our choices for March include a wildly successful rom-com, a sports drama, and a political action film.

    Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Harry Shum Jr. and Gemma Chan in Crazy Rich Asians.
    Warner Bros. Pictures

Crazy Rich Asians was a huge hit six years ago, which is why it’s shocking that the sequel hasn’t come together yet. Constance Wu stars as Rachel Chu, a college professor who is dating Nick Young (Henry Golding). And it seems that Nick neglected to tell Rachel just how wealthy his family actually is. That’s why their trip to Singapore for a wedding is such a rude awakening for Rachel, especially when Nick’s family assumes that she’s only dating him for his money.

The only family member that takes to Rachel is Nick’s cousin, Astrid Leong-Teo (Gemma Chan). However, Rachel faces the gravest test from Nick’s mother, Eleanor Sung-Young (Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Michelle Yeoh), who makes no secret of the fact that she believes that Rachel doesn’t deserve to marry Nick or be a part of the family. If Rachel and Nick want to be together, then they’re going to have to overcome that perception.

Watch Crazy Rich Asians on Peacock.

    The Way Back (2020)

Ben Affleck in The Way Back.
    Warner Bros. Pictures

Because of his fame, Ben Affleck’s struggle with alcoholism has played out in a very public way. The Way Back allowed Affleck to play off things that happened in his own life while portraying Jack Cunningham, a man who is estranged from his wife, Angela (Janina Gavankar), over his addiction issues. Jack was once a star basketball player in high school, which is why Father Edward Devine (John Aylward) asks him to return to his alma mater as a coach following the sudden death of his predecessor.

Through his new job, Jack bonds with the student players under his tutelage, and he begins to turn the basketball team’s fortunes around. But turning his own life around isn’t as easy for Jack, as his personal grief threatens to send him into an alcoholic relapse.

Watch The Way Back on Peacock.

    V For Vendetta (2006)

Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving in V For Vendetta.
    Warner Bros. Pictures

Alan Moore has famously disowned every single adaptation of his comic books in Hollywood, but V For Vendetta is one of the few that remains true to the spirit of the original work written by Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd. The story is set in the near future of the United Kingdom, which is under the tight control of a fascist regime. That’s where V (Hugo Weaving) comes in. This unknown figure in a Guy Fawkes mask takes it upon himself to rain terror down upon the regime, especially those who were involved in running a concentration camp.

May December‘s Natalie Portman plays Evey Hammond, a young woman who is saved by V and ultimately becomes his accomplice. Through Evey, the audience sees V at his best and his worst without ever learning who is underneath the mask … because the mask is just a symbol. It’s the actions of the man beneath it that matter.

As Princess Kate recovers from abdominal surgery and King Charles receives treatment for a cancer diagnosis, the brunt of royal duties has fallen onto the ailing shoulders of Princess Anne.

Known in an official capacity as The Princess Royal, the late Queen Elizabeth’s only daughter is one of the few remaining working royals and wellbeing experts at GoSmokeFree worry the excess workload might push her to breaking point.

“Since both The King and The Princess of Wales have been dealing with health issues lately, their partners also seem to have taken a step back from the public eye. For some unknown reason, this has left Princess Anne to do most of the heavy lifting,” a wellbeing spokesperson said.

The Royal Diary of public engagements states that between March 18 and May 10, Princess Anne will undertake 55 of the 78 total duties listed.

That equates to a staggering 70 per cent of official engagements, with as many as eight combined appearances scheduled for March 25-26.

“While Her Royal Highness is well-known for being the most hard-working royal, we are deeply concerned for her wellbeing and worry Princess Anne may be on the brink of burnout,” the spokesperson continued.

“While we are confident HRH serves her country tirelessly with unmatched dedication, we urge other royals to get involved to balance the workload.”

Royal engagements are made public eight weeks in advance, though 2022 records suggest The Princess Royal has been carrying at least 50% of the load for some time.

Sophie, The Duchess of Edinburgh and wife to Prince Edward is statistically the second-most hardworking royal, expecting to tackle 13 appearances until the end of April.

Princess Kate’s abdominal surgery in January, and subsequent recovery, has ruled her out of any public appearances until after Easter.

The mother of three was seen in good spirits shopping near her Windsor residence earlier in the week, a sign her health is on the mend.

Australian fitness guru Kayla Itsines has revealed the reason she broke off her engagement.

The entrepreneur opened up recently on Mamamia’s No Filter podcast, with host Kate Langbroek, to discuss her separation from former fiance Tobi Pearce.

She spoke about how they were both “very young” and had very different personalities, which eventually led to their relationship ending.

“We are different people with different morals. It works so well in business … but we were very young,” The mum-of-two said.

“My strengths were creative, speaking to people, understanding women (and) doing the boot camps.

“(While Tobi) was really level-headed and logical,” she said. “That works fantastically in business (but) I think Tobi will agree, not so well in a relationship”.

The couple met at the gym in 2012 where Pearce worked as a personal trainer, before they co-founded the wildly successful Sweat app and BBG workout programs together.

After eight years together, an engagement, and the birth of their daughter Arna in 2019, they decided to call it quits.

After decades of being publicly ridiculed, shamed and scrutinized for her fluctuating weight, Oprah Winfrey said she is “really excited” about the availability of weight-loss medication.

The media mogul’s latest one-off TV program, An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution, aired Monday night.

The hourlong broadcast saw Winfrey, 70, candidly discuss obesity and how weight-loss drugs have provided her with “hope.” Winfrey spoke highly of the medications — without mentioning specific name brands like Ozempic — and said she wanted to eliminate the “stigma and the shame and the judgment” around using weight-loss drugs.

In front of a studio audience, Winfrey said she’s been berated for her weight throughout most of her career.

“I have to say that I took on the shame that the world gave to me,” Winfrey said. “For 25 years, making fun of my weight was national sport.”

The talk show host recalled a 1990 cover of the magazine TV Guide that featured her photo and the accompanying headline: “Bumpy, lumpy, and downright dumpy.”

Winfrey went on to read aloud several more disparaging tabloid headlines about her weight, including “Oprah: Fatter than ever” and “Oprah warned diet or die.”

“In an effort to combat all the shame, I starved myself for nearly five months,” Winfrey revealed. “And after losing 67 pounds on a liquid diet, the next day, y’all, the very next day, I started to gain it back.”

Winfrey called obesity “a disease, not a character flaw.”

“In my lifetime, I never dreamed we would be talking about medicines that would be providing hope to people like me,” Winfrey championed.

She said the medications, as well as causing her to lose weight, helped Winfrey “no longer blame” herself for her body fluctuations.

“When I tell you how many times I have blamed myself because you think, ‘I’m smart enough to figure this out,’ and then to hear all along it’s you fighting your brain!” Winfrey said of weight loss.

She said the medication has helped her stop “constantly thinking about what the next meal is going to be.”

Winfrey added she also hikes three to five miles (about five to eight kilometres) every day, while regularly running and eating a heathy diet to maintain her slim figure.

The TV special featured several interviews with medical professionals about weight-loss medications. Patients who, like Winfrey, have utilized these drugs to combat obesity were interviewed as well. Many of the users spoke highly of the medications, though some users also expressed critical opinions.

Still, Winfrey noted weight-loss drugs may not be for everyone.

“For people who feel happy and healthy in celebrating life in a bigger body and don’t want the medications, I say: ‘Bless you,’” Oprah signed off at the hour’s end. “And for all the people who believe diet and exercise is the best and only way to lose excess weight, bless you too if that works for you.”

An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution aired only weeks after Winfrey announced she will leave her role on the WeightWatchers board of directors. Winfrey, who had been one of the company’s most prevalent spokespersons, decided not to stand for board re-election after she publicly revealed she was taking an unnamed weight-loss medication.

Winfrey donated her shares in the company to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

In December 2023, Winfrey told People magazine she was using a weight-loss drug as a “maintenance tool” for her fluctuating weight. The disclosure came after Winfrey’s social media followers speculated that the star may be taking Ozempic or another similar medication.

    Story continues below advertisement

Winfrey said she uses weight-loss drugs “as a tool to manage not yo-yoing.”

Due to popular demand, the manufacturers of several drugs, including Ozempic, have experienced shortages that have continued into 2024. The shortages have affected many Canadian patients with Type 2 diabetes, who treat the condition with drugs like Ozempic. Some diabetics who had been using Ozempic have since been forced to change their medications.

If you’re Queen B, you don’t spill the tea — you spill the honey.

And that’s exactly what Beyoncé did in an Instagram post revealing the cover of her upcoming country album, “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” due March 29.

Mrs. Carter’s news left the Beyhive buzzing, with many recalling the cold reception the artist appeared to have once received from the country-music community, which inspired her to make her new LP.

Beyoncé performed “Daddy Lessons” with the Chicks at the 2016 Country Music Association Awards. ABC

“It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” she wrote in an unusually lengthy post.

And fans are speculating that Beyoncé is referring to the 2016 Country Music Association Awards, when she performed “Daddy Lessons” — a distinctly country ditty off her much-lauded “Lemonade” album — with the Chicks.

Country star Alan Jackson reportedly walked out on the performance in protest, later tweeting #KeepItCountry.

But seven years after that controversial CMAs appearance, Beyoncé has become the first black woman to have a No. 1 country single with “Texas Hold ’Em,” one of two “Cowboy Carter” tracks — the other being “16 Carriages” — that she released last month.

“I feel honored to be the first Black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart,” she wrote in her post.

Beyoncé promises “a few surprises” on “Carter Country,” which she calls “a continuation” of 2022’s “Renaissance.” beyonce/Instagram

“That would not have happened without the outpouring of support from each and every one of you. My hope is that years from now, the mention of an artist’s race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant.”

But the experience in question inspired Beyoncé to begin digging into the black roots of country music when she began working on “Cowboy Carter” over five years ago.

“Because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive,” she wrote.

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” Beyoncé wrote in an Instagram post about her upcoming country album “Cowboy Carter.” beyonce/Instagram

And her haters in the country music community have only fueled the 42-year-old pop superstar’s creativity.

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” she wrote. “act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

After revealing that she has “a few surprises” on the album — which she describes as “a continuation” of the Act 1 that was 2022’s “Renaissance” — Bey makes it clear that she cannot be contained by any genre.

“This ain’t a Country album. This is a “Beyoncé” album,” she wrote.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Looking to grab a drink at a bar that matches your vibe? San Diego has a wide variety of unique bars, ranging from intimate speakeasies to laidback tiki bars and stylish lounges.

Whether you’re looking for a place to enjoy a quick happy hour or taking someone out on a weekend date, here is a roundup of 10 themed bars in San Diego worth checking out at least once.

El Sueno — Old Town (2836 Juan St, San Diego, CA 92110)

This restaurant and bar pays homage to Old Town’s rich Mexican history. At El Sueno, guests will be treated to a vibrant menu of food and cocktails inspired by Mexican flavors and culture while being comforted by the ambience of an old hacienda nestled in the heart of a jungle.

Realm of the 52 Remedies — Kearny Mesa (4805 Convoy St, San Diego, CA 92111)

Hidden inside Common Theory, Realm of the 52 Remedies may look like a typical Chinese apothecary shop when you first step in. As guests explore further, they are transported a 1920s-era speakeasy highlighting both Chinese and Korean cultures. According to its website, the Realm is inspired by Wushi’er Bingfang, or Recipes for Fifty-Two Ailments, an ancient Chinese medical text dating back to around 215 BCE under the Qin dynasty.

Wolfie’s Carousel — Little Italy (2401 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101)

What better way to add a little fantastical flair to your happy hour than to sit at a rotating cocktail bar designed like a carousel? The counter at Wolfie’s Carousel, located in Little Italy, slowly spins as customers indulge in creative cocktails and Parisian fare.

Shibuya Nights — Little Italy (1953 India St Level 2, San Diego, CA 92101)

Tucked inside the upscale Japanese bar and restaurant Cloak & Petal, Shibuya Nights reflects Tokyo’s trendy Harajuku neighborhood. Featuring neon lights and hanging cherry blossoms over the bar, the space offers Asian-fusion small plates separate from Cloak & Petal’s sushi menu and a good variety of cocktails.

The Space Pad — Oceanside (406 Mission Ave, Oceanside, CA 92054)

Space enthusiasts might appreciate this speakeasy that is accessible via a hidden passageway inside Kilowatt Brewing’s Oceanside location. Complete with glowing crystals and mid-century decor influenced by 1950’s Earth, the Space Pad transports you to the fictional planet Rillispore. Here you can expect fruity and tropical cocktails with smoke and bubbles that look just as intriguing as your surroundings.

Raised by Wolves — La Jolla (4301 La Jolla Village Dr #2030, San Diego, CA 92122)

Situated in Westfield UTC lies a storefront resembling one found in 19th century Europe. Stained glass and muted hand-painted murals greet guests before they are led behind a spinning fireplace and into an opulent cocktail lounge with brass furnishings and a three-tiered water fountain at the center of the circular bar. With velvet seating and wooden bookshelves lining the walls, Raised by Wolves also gives off a “dark academia” vibe, perfect for anyone wanting to sip on a classic old-fashioned while conversing with company in an intimate setting.

Oculto 477 — Old Town (2414 San Diego Ave., San Diego, CA 92110)

For people not afraid of the macabre, try sitting alongside the spirits of Old Town at Oculto 477, which is located right next to El Campo Santo Cemetery, San Diego’s second-oldest cemetery. In fact, the number 477 refers to the 477 people buried right next-door. The drink menu is inspired by cocktails made during the Prohibition era, a time when the sale and import of alcoholic beverages was banned in the United States. Oculto 477 also takes inspiration from Spanish culture and Catholicism.

The Grass Skirt — Pacific Beach (910 Grand Ave., San Diego, CA 92109)

The Grass Skirt is a laid-back tiki bar with a South Pacific atmosphere and Southeast Asian cuisine. Flavors like lime, pineapple, coconut and passionfruit dominate the cocktail menu, along with various brands of rum, tequila and mezcal. If you’re looking to enjoy a few drinks before heading to the beach or wanting a temporary tropical vacation, The Grass Skirt might be the bar for you.

False Idol — Little Italy (675 W Beech St, San Diego, CA 92101)

If The Grass Skirt isn’t the tiki bar for you, you might want to check out False Idol in Little Italy. It features Polynesian wood carvings, a rock wall installation with water trickling down as an added effect and colorful glass buoys attached to the ceiling in fishing nets. Some of False Idol’s drinks run “exceptionally strong,” according to the menu. The Zombie cocktail, which is described to have “an impossible amount of rum with a hint of spice and citrus,” even comes with a warning: “A limit of two is in place for your own protection.”

Prohibition Lounge — Gaslamp Quarter (548 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92101)

Last but not least, the name of this bar speaks for itself. Prohibition Lounge takes its theme seriously, encouraging guests to follow the 1920s dress code on Fridays and Saturdays, according to its website. As San Diego’s original speakeasy, Prohibition Lounge promises a “truly sensory experience” perfect for fans of the world of the Great Gatsby. After walking through a door masked as the entrance to a law office, patrons will need to follow strict rules before following red-carpeted stairs to the underground dimly-lit lounge, similar to what it would have been like in 1920s San Diego during the Prohibition era.

    Warner Bros.

Although it doesn’t have the most intuitive interface, Max is actually one of the best destinations in the streaming world if you’re looking for great movies to watch. The service’s many titles include some genuine classics, as well as a number of legendary action films that have already stood the test of time.

If you’re looking for something thrilling to watch during the month of March, then look no further. We’ve pulled together three great action movies you need to watch on Max this month.

    Avatar (2009)

Avatar | Official Trailer (HD) | 20th Century FOX

James Cameron has been making great action movies for basically his whole career, but Avatar took things to an entirely new level. The film tells the familiar story of an outsider who finds himself enamored with another culture, but what makes the movie work is its ability to totally immerse viewers in the world of Pandora.

The film’s world is almost entirely CGI, and although it was released more than a decade ago, it still looks better than most movies released today. In addition to its careful world-building, the film also features some great CGI performances, including what may be the best work of Zoe Saldana’s entire career.

    Spy (2015)

The action comedy used to be a common feature at the American box office, and Spy is a reminder of why the genre used to be so successful. The film follows a CIA analyst who has spent her career confined to a desk and is given her first field assignment following the assassination of her former partner.

The plot mechanics are far less important here than the comedic trio of Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, and Jason Statham. Statham, in particular, manages to wring comedy out of basically every moment he appears on screen, largely because he’s so willing to make fun of his usual filmic persona.

    Birds of Prey (2020)

BIRDS OF PREY – Official Trailer 1

The DC universe has made many missteps in the franchise’s history, but one thing they absolutely nailed was the casting of Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie’s Harley has only appeared in three movies, but it feels like she’s cast a much longer cultural shadow.

In Birds of Prey, she gets the chance to strike off on her own without Joker, and the movie that results is both light on its feet and refreshingly small scale. Following a group of outcast women as they unite against a man who has wronged them all, Birds of Prey is, above all else, fun, and that’s what more superhero movies should try to be.
