HIV has been completely eliminated from cells in a laboratory, raising hopes of a future cure.

Researchers completed the revolutionary task by using a gene-editing tool known as Crispr-Cas, which won the Nobel Prize in 2020, and targets the virus’s DNA.

Using the tool essentially like scissors, they removed all traces of the virus from infected cells and allowed unwanted genes to be deleted, or new genetic material to be introduced into cells.

The researchers from Amsterdam UMC, Netherlands, said they aim to create a robust and safe Crispr-Cas regimen, to create an inclusive ‘HIV cure for all’ that can render a range of HIV strains inactive.

The scientists, led by Dr Elena Herrera-Carrillo, said they have created an efficient attack on the virus in various cells and where it may be hiding, which they say represents a pivotal advancement towards developing a cure strategy.

The study was presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and saw the researchers focus on parts of the virus that stay the same across all known HIV strains.

Antiretroviral drugs suppress HIV, but none of them clear the virus (Picture: Getty)

They say this will help them provide a broad-spectrum therapy capable of combating multiple HIV variants effectively, but stressed their work provides proof of a concept, and will not become a cure for HIV tomorrow.

They say the next steps involve optimising the delivery route to target the majority of the HIV reservoir cells.

The hope is to devise a strategy to make this system as safe as possible for future clinical applications, and achieve the right balance between efficacy and safety.

‘Only then can we consider clinical trials of ‘cure’ in humans to disable the HIV reservoir,’ the researchers said. ‘While these preliminary findings are very encouraging, it is premature to declare that there is a functional HIV cure on the horizon.’

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have also identified drug candidates that show promise in reversing the ability of HIV to escape detection by the immune system.

In the journal Cell Chemical Biology, the researchers reveal they have found a potential path to clear a viral reservoir that can’t be cleared with existing antiretroviral drugs, and is something that currently prevents people from being completely cured of HIV.

Senior author Dr Thomas Smithgall said: ‘We have excellent antiretroviral drugs that suppress HIV, but unfortunately, none of them clear the virus. If someone with HIV stops taking their medication, the infection will rebound.

‘HIV establishes a reservoir of infected cells that lay dormant even in the presence of antiretroviral therapy, hiding from immune system detection. We think we’ve uncovered a key to unmasking that reservoir.’

Jurgen Klopp stormed out of a post-match interview with Scandinavian TV following Liverpool’s dramatic FA Cup clash against Man United.

The Reds were defeated 4-3 after extra time as Amad Diallo netted a 121st-minute winner to secure an impressive comeback victory for United, with Klopp’s side having led 2-1 and 3-2 at points of the match.

And, following the game – which ended Liverpool’s hopes of a quadruple in Klopp’s final season – the German took offence at a question from a reporter from Norwegian outlet V Sport and walked off.

After being asked about his side’s intensity dropping in extra time, Klopp fumed: ‘That’s a bit of a dumb question.

‘If you see us often, you can ask us the other times why we have so much energy.

‘I don’t know how many games we’ve had recently and how many Manchester United have had. That’s sport.

‘I’m really disappointed about that question, but you thought obviously it’s good.’

The reporter then added: ‘So too many games?’

This led to a furious Klopp responding: ‘Oh you don’t think that. Come on!

‘You are obviously not in a great shape and I have no nerves for you,’ as the German walked past the reporter and left the interview.

The Reds seemed to be cruising to victory at Old Trafford, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister looking like they would be enough before Antony’s equaliser late in normal time.

Harvey Elliott’s deflected effort put them ahead again in extra-time, before Marcus Rashford and then Amad Diallo secured the most dramatic of victories for United.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Klopp bemoaned his side’s wastefulness when ahead in the game.

‘We didn’t finish the game off,’ he said. ‘When you leave the door open, away from home at Old Trafford, it’s clear they would get chances.

‘It was really hard for us. That was the first time I really saw my team… oof… really struggling.

‘When you’re winning, it’s a great position to watch a game. When you’re losing, it’s the worst feeling.’

When asked about potential fatigue in his squad ahead of the international break, Klopp added: ‘I hope the (international managers) want them in the best shape for the summer.

‘So I hope they won’t have to play two lots of 90 minutes. But it’s not in my hands.’

The Reds return to action on March 31 when they travel to Brighton, with Klopp’s side currently second in the Premier League behind Arsenal on goal difference.

Global stocks are set to end the week on a tepid note, following seven weeks of gains, and the dollar stands firm, after hotter-than-forecast US inflation knocked back bets for how soon and often the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates.

MSCI’S global equity index was down 0.1 per cent on Friday and flat for the week following a strong rally for most of the first quarter of the year.

The dollar index, which measures the currency against the euro, yen and four other major peers, was steady at 103.38 following a rally on Thursday, heading for its best week since January.

The mood was cautions after a bigger-than-expected rise in producer prices in US data on Thursday added to a hot consumer inflation reading earlier in the week.

Traders have cut the odds of the US Federal Reserve, the world’s most influential central bank, cutting rates in June to 60 per cent, from about 67 per cent late on Wednesday, according to LSEG’s rate probability app.

Ahead of the Fed’s rate setting meeting next week, the market is now pricing in fewer than three US rate cuts for 2024, down from three to four roughly two weeks ago and around seven late in 2023.

US borrowing costs are currently in a range of 5.25 per cent to 5.5 per cent, more than a two-decade high.

US benchmark bond yields, which influence the cost of debt globally, held on Friday near the 4.3 per cent level they reached in the previous session for the first time this month, following their biggest jump in three months.

“Price pressures are looking more stubborn, with the process of disinflation taking longer than hoped,” added Kyle Rodda, senior markets analyst at Capital.com.

That, he added, was “raising the spectre of a potential air pocket ahead for the tech-driven rally”, in US and worldwide equity indices.

US stock futures pointed marginally higher on Friday, however, following a 0.29 per cent decline in the S&P 500 on Thursday that masked a big drop in chip sector shares.

“The market is resigned to seeing no rate cuts in the first half of the year,” said Eren Osman, wealth management director at Arbuthnot Latham.

“Investors are buying into the no-landing scenario,” he added, referring to an outlook where the global economy avoids a recession and central banks do not rush to loosen monetary policy unless inflation drops below target levels.

Elsewhere, Japan was in the global market spotlight, as speculation built that the Bank of Japan could exit its ultra-dovish monetary policies at its two-day meeting.

Jiji news agency reported on Thursday that the BOJ had started to make arrangements to end its negative interest rate policy at the gathering.

Sources told Reuters that the central bank would debate the end of negative rates while the government also appeared to back a policy shift.

Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Friday that the economy was no longer in deflation.

Japan’s 10-year bond yield rose to 0.795 per cent for the first time in more than three months earlier in Friday’s session.

Any yen strength, however, was overpowered by the resurgent dollar, which gained 0.2 per cent to 148.8 yen, continuing its rebound from a low of 146.48 a week ago.

    The euro extended Thursday’s decline to $US1.087 ($A1.654), after hitting a two-month high of $US1.0980 ($A1.6708) a week ago.

Elsewhere, oil prices succumbed to some profit-taking, following strong gains this week amid sharp declines in US crude and fuel inventories, drone strikes on Russian refineries and an increase in energy demand forecasts.

Brent crude futures for May were down 0.6 per cent, to $US85.90 ($A130.71) a barrel.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for April was down 0.7 per cent, to $US80.73 ($A122.84).

Bitcoin edged away from an all-time high reached on Thursday, as risk sentiment took a hit.

Second-tier Coventry scored twice deep into stoppage time to beat Wolverhampton 3-2 in the FA Cup on Saturday and reach the semifinals for the first time since 1987, the year the team won the famous competition.

United States striker Haji Wright completed the remarkable comeback in the 10th minute of added-on time, after Ellis Simms — with his second goal of the game — equalized for Coventry three minutes earlier at Molineux.

Wolves looked to be heading to Wembley Stadium for the last four next month after scoring in the 83rd and 88th minutes.

Sitting in eighth place in the Championship, Coventry was the lowest-ranked team to get to the quarterfinals. The club from central England can look forward to a trip back to Wembley, where it lost the Championship playoff final to Luton at the end of last season.

It also gives Mark Robins, Coventry’s manager, another magical FA Cup moment. Robins likely saved Alex Ferguson from getting fired three years into his storied tenure as Manchester United manager by scoring the winner in an FA Cup third-round match against Nottingham Forest midway through the 1989-90 season, when Ferguson was under severe pressure.

That is widely heralded as a turning point in Ferguson’s nearly 27-year tenure.

Manchester City hosts Newcastle later in Saturday’s other quarterfinal match. On Sunday, Manchester United welcomes great rival Liverpool and Chelsea hosts second-tier Leicester.

    PREMIER LEAGUE

In the first two games of the three in the Premier League on Saturday, Burnley boosted its unlikely hopes of staying up with a first win in 2024 while relegation candidates Luton and Nottingham Forest drew 1-1.

Next-to-last Burnley beat 10-man Brentford 2-1 to end an 11-game winless run in all competitions and move eight points adrift of safety in its bid to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Jacob Bruun Larsen converted a 10th-minute penalty awarded after a push by Brentford left back Sergio Reguilon, who was sent off for the offense because he was the last man. David Datro Fofana added a second before Kristoffer Ajer reduced the deficit in the 83rd to ensure a nervy finish at Turf Moor.

Forest stayed three points above Luton, which is third-to-last and occupying the final relegation spot, after seeing its 34th-minute volley opener by Chris Wood canceled out by substitute Luke Berry.

Forest will not be sitting too comfortably because it could be hit with a points deduction in the coming weeks for overspending.

    Fifth-place Tottenham visits Fulham later.

A dormant dynasty is preparing to rise again.

This year, not a single Denver Public Schools student qualified for the Colorado State Spelling Bee.

Fourteen wordy kids from across the state gathered to compete at the bee, sponsored by The Denver Post, last weekend. Aditi Muthukumar, an eighth grader from Hulstrom Options K-8 in Northglenn, won the bee for the second year in a row and advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

While Avon, Fruita, Arvada and Aurora — to name a few — were all represented, not a Denver contestant was among them.

This would have been unthinkable under Bill Schaefer’s regime.

The longtime volunteer spelling coach told The Post in 2019 that his Denver Public School protégés had “dominated” the state spelling bee in recent years.

But Schaefer’s 2020 death, paired with the disruptions of the pandemic, hit DPS’ spelling bee community hard.

“It was just such a strong program,” said Jeffra Frank, an educator at Denver’s Slavens School who helps oversee spelling bee preparation and organization along with a handful of teachers across the district. “Fast forward to COVID shutdown and when Bill passed away, everything came to a screeching halt. The semantics program lost its leader.”

Now, Schaefer’s former students, who still think of themselves as “Bill’s kids,” have started their own spelling bee prep program in their mentor’s honor — and name. They plan to give the competition grief, come spell or high water.

“We want to get back to a place where DPS is this high-performing force,” said Bryn Flanigan, 22, director of communications for the nonprofit The Schaefer Program, which provides free mentoring by former spelling bee competitors to Denver students eager to spell their hearts out. “We’re excited to build it back up.”

Himanvi Kopuri won the Colorado State Spelling Bee in 2013 under Schaefer’s tutelage and made it to the sixth round of the semifinals in the Scripps National Spelling Bee that year.

The competition was thrilling, she said, but the community of spellers that Schaefer created through his free tutoring and spelling summer camps set the stage for years of friendship and joyful childhood memories.

“The community he built was so integral to our years as middle and elementary schoolers,” said Kopuri, a 23-year-old who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and now works in management consulting. “I think it created such a great foundation in terms of work ethic and community and finding a love for words. All those skills have carried me to such a great extent throughout the rest of my life.”

Kopuri has dabbled in spelling coaching, but this academic year, she made it official by founding the Schaefer Program, which she leads with the assistance of other students who studied under Schaefer.

She got the band back together, reaching out to young folks who have scattered across the country to see if they’d be interested in giving their time to their one-time school district, the same way retired teacher Schaefer gave his time to them.

“It’s so heartwarming and amazing and really goes to show how much Bill touched their lives,” said Emily Hoagland, parent to 13-year-old Amir Hassan, who is being tutored through the Schaefer Program.

The program pairs ex-spellers now in high school with Denver elementary and middle schoolers eager to learn about semantics, vocabulary, spelling and word etymology.

Amir said he enjoys spelling because it’s something he’s good at.

“My favorite things about spelling, in general, are just it’s simple and it’s an individual thing,” Amir said. “I’m not big on team sports.”

The mentors borrow parts of their lessons from extensive binders of work Schaefer used to give them, while adding in their own tips, tricks and games. Some mentors hold virtual weekly lessons while others conduct in-person sessions. Program leaders — many of whom are in college — are putting together a summer spelling school reminiscent of the one Schaefer used to hold.

“It’s been really amazing to get back together with everyone — people we were all friends with in our middle school days and have all gone different ways to different universities,” Flanigan said.

In the program’s first year of operation, there are eight people on its leadership team and five mentors serving 10 Denver schools.

Benjamin Holland, 18, a senior at Denver’s George Washington High School, worked with Schaefer from early elementary through middle school. Now he’s a mentor coaching Denver kids in weekly virtual lessons featuring games and quizzes about root words, common spelling rules and languages of origin.

“Are you familiar with the sexy internet?” asks a performer during Private View by Restless Dance Theatre.

One audience member gamely answers in the negative, only to be told they are lying, because a clear conscience is a clear browser history.

Private View has just wrapped a sold-out run at the Adelaide Festival where they had to add extra chairs to fit the audience in the theatre.

And there are hopes its very particular brand of hilarity, heart, and discomfort will tour to other capital cities.

The company works with dancers with and without disabilities, and its latest dance piece explores the taboo subjects of love and sex.

It’s new territory for Restless, and material that some in the audience will find uncomfortable, artistic director Michelle Ryan said.

But she’s proud of how the show has evolved, and said the company’s dancers are in peak form.

“I’m glad people are finally acknowledging that these these people are artists,” Ms Ryan said.

“Hopefully people don’t see the disability and just actually see the craft of what they’re doing.”

Private View is staged on four elevated platforms surrounding the audience, which are lit one by one to delve into different realms of desire.

The show begins with the disembodied eyes and lips of composer and singer Carla Lippis projected onto a curtain.

Then the chanteuse herself appears, clad in velvet, to participate in a dancer’s perfect date in a French restaurant.

The audience is then able to peep inside a bedroom of sorts, walled with venetian blinds, through which performers can peek, poke and beckon.

It’s a show full of glorious visual metaphors – who knew the act of removing socks could be so hilariously suggestive?

Lippis also wanders through the audience with a vintage phone, a hotline for questions about love, intimacy and sex – and the temperature rises as performers ask the audience some increasingly uncomfortable questions.

What does intimacy really mean? Heartbreakingly, one audience member admits she hasn’t often heard the phrase “I love you” or, at least, not enough.

Outside the theatre there are more phones: Pick up the receiver to hear people with disabilities talk about physical intimacy – sometimes it’s desired, and sometimes it’s an unwanted but necessary part of living with a disability.

Private View was developed in the studio, using workshops and interviews with people with disabilities as source material, and Restless also engaged an intimacy coach.

It’s been a busy time for the Adelaide-based company, which performed at the Sydney Opera House and in Melbourne in 2023, along with a tour to Korea.

Ms Ryan believes Private View will lead audiences to question their perceptions about disability, but fundamentally the show is based on universal themes.

“We all experience love, desire, heartbreak, all those things,” she said.

“You charm people first, you have fun with them next, then you hit them in the heart.”

AAP travelled with the assistance of the Adelaide Festival.

Households hoping for additional cost of living relief in the May budget could be disappointed with Treasurer Jim Chalmers set to hose down expectations of cash splash due to weaker revenue windfalls.

In each of Labor’s first two budgets, the bottom line has benefited from more than $100bn in revenue upgrades as soaring commodity prices and near-record low unemployment bolstered the government’s tax take.

But in a pre-budget address to be delivered in Sydney on Thursday, Dr Chalmers will warn that while the Albanese government is still aiming for a second straight surplus in May, revenue upgrades to the upcoming budget will likely be far smaller than in previous years due to falling commodity prices and a softening of the jobs market.

These economic headwinds will consequently reduce company and income tax receipts.

“This year, we won’t see anything like that,” Dr Chalmers will tell a business luncheon hosted by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia.

“In fact we are even looking at much less than the $69bn we booked in the latest mid-year budget update.”

With tax revenue pouring in at a slower rate, the government may therefore have less scope to offer cost of living relief and other handouts in the May budget.

In his address, Dr Chalmers will cite the recent fall in the iron ore price, which he said was around 20 per cent lower than 12 months earlier, as a key driver of falling tax receipts.

After holding steady on Tuesday, iron ore futures tumbled on Wednesday with prices sliding too $US104.55 a tonne – a near seven month low.

In mid-February, prices for the key steel ingredient were fetching more than $US130 a tonne.

Commonwealth Bank commodity analysts tip that iron ore prices will ease even further, falling below $US100 a tonne, due to soaring inventories and weak demand from China’s toxic property sector.

However, despite the pessimistic outlook, the iron ore price remains well above Treasury’s own forecasts of $US60 a tonne by the September quarter.

Thermal coal prices were still in line with Treasury forecasts, Dr Chalmers will say, however they remained about a third lower than this time last year.

Dr Chalmers will also point to signs of weakening in Australia’s jobs market, which will also cap tax receipts and force increased spending on social services.

“While the labour market is still pretty resilient, it’s now softening so we won’t get the very substantial revenue upgrades we’ve seen from outperforming expectations here,” Dr Chalmers will say.

After reaching a near record low of 3.4 per cent in 2022, the jobless rate has slowly edged up in recent months, reaching a two-year high of 4.1 per cent in January.

Meanwhile, hours worked and job vacancies have fallen from their record highs, as the economy softens under the pressure of the Reserve Bank’s aggressive run of interest rate increases.

    ‘Shooting for a second surplus’

Despite the headwinds facing the budget, Dr Chalmers will tell CEDA members on Thursday that the government is still “shooting for a second surplus”.

However, the Treasurer is also faced with the competing challenges of ensuring the budget does not add to inflation, while also providing enough fiscal support to keep the economy from tipping into a recession.

“There will still be a primary focus, but not a sole focus, on inflation,” Dr Chalmers will say.

“There’ll be revenue upgrades, and we’ll bank what we can from them.

“The three biggest drivers of our thinking about this third budget are global uncertainty, persistent cost-of-living pressures, and slowing growth.”

The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook released in December, showed the forecast federal budget deficit had been slashed to a razor-thin $1.1bn, all but guaranteeing the Treasurer would deliver back to back budget surpluses.

SpaceX will attempt to launch its 122-metre tall — or 37-storey — mega-rocket on its third test flight on Thursday.

The Starship rocket is SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s pet project that he says will not only be able to spit out ever more Starlink satellites but also eventually take humans to Mars.

But the bigger, more pressing goal is to prove that Starship will be ready for NASA’s Artemis III mission to the moon, slated to launch in 2026.

A variation of the SpaceX vessel, called the Human Landing System (HLS), will be critical to putting humans on the lunar surface. In order to do so, SpaceX needs to clear a number of hurdles, including demonstrating a ship-to-ship transfer of fuel.

But so far, Starship has seen only incremental achievements.

This launch is referred to as Starship’s integrated flight test three (IFT-3), as it is the third time that both the booster and the spaceship itself are being launched together.

From the public’s perspective, IFT-1 and IFT-2 were unmitigated failures.

In the firstlast April, the rocket cleared its gargantuan tower before blowing up just four minutes later — Musk and his fans like to use the term “a rapid unscheduled disassembly” — before the booster stage and spaceship could separate.

And that was only what happened in the air.

Back on terra firma, the aftermath was vast. Because IFT-1 went up without a launch suppression system at the pad — something to soften the fiery blast and shockwave — its 33 engines left an enormous crater below the launch pad. Debris was scattered for kilometres, leading to a barrage of recommendations from federal officials about how to best minimize the harm to the surrounding ecosystem by future launches.

The second test flight, last November, had a suppression system in place and caused minimal damage to the pad. The rocket successfully lifted off and the two stages managed to separate successfully — a demonstration of a new way of separation called “hot staging.”

Unfortunately, the first stage was lost in an explosion. The second managed to make it into space, reaching 149 kilometres, before it, too, exploded.

While explosions aren’t something the public typically deems as achievements, that’s not the way space watchers necessarily see it. And certainly not SpaceX.

It deemed IFT-1 a success because it cleared the pad without exploding.

The second was touted as a success for proving that hot-staging — when the second stage booster ignites as the first separates — worked. And, as Musk said later, the second stage reached space before exploding.

But with Artemis III breathing down its neck, SpaceX needs to rack up more concrete wins.

Engineer and former NASA official Dan Dumbacher is hesitant to label the past Starship launches as either successes or failures.

WATCH | Starship critical for planned Mars mission:

What does the explosion of the SpaceX rocket mean for the Mars mission?

The SpaceX Starship rocket is a critical part of NASA’s plans. CBC’s science reporter Nicole Mortillaro explains why the explosion of the massive rocket isn’t hampering plans to send astronauts to Mars.

“If I had been looking at it with my old NASA badge on in my old NASA world, they’re failures, because NASA has to operate in an environment where [they’ve] got, as I say, 536 investors watching over my shoulder, making sure I’m using public money appropriately,” he said.

For SpaceX and others in the private sector, it’s “a little bit of a different ball game,” said Dumbacher, who is now CEO of the  American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

“When you have Elon, or [Jeff Bezos] funding things, the buck all stops with them” — their private money allows them to operate differently, being somewhat less risk averse than NASA.

But with NASA relying on the triumph of commercial entities, things begin to change: progress needs to be made.

Paul Fjeld, who collaborated with NASA during the Apollo program, is confident that despite the enormous challenges ahead, SpaceX can rise to the occasion, though perhaps not in the current timeline.

“The engineering chops are there, and that’s been demonstrated since the start of it,” he said.

WATCH | Second test flight ends in explosions:

SpaceX Starship test flight fails minutes after launch

SpaceX’s uncrewed spacecraft Starship, developed to carry astronauts to the moon and beyond, was presumed to have failed in space minutes after lifting off. Saturday’s launch was a second test, after its first attempt to reach space ended in an explosion.

    What to expect with IFT-3

For IFT-3, SpaceX has a few specific objectives. As always, reaching suborbit for the first time — not orbit, technically, as Starship is meant to splash down in the Indian Ocean without circling the globe — is a big one.

But it also plans to test Starship’s payload bay doors and, possibly, the fuel transfer system within the spaceship itself, a sort of precursor to the ship-to-ship transfer needed for Artemis III.

SpaceX might also look at the tiles, many of which were missing on the vessel after the second launch. The tiles are crucial to protect the spaceship from the intense heat of re-entry, as was made clear during the age of NASA’s space shuttle program.

In order to reach NASA’s safety requirements, SpaceX’s HLS system will need to see close to 14 complete successful launches, and those won’t be based on SpaceX’s metric of “success.” They all must be unqualified successes.

Seeing as this is just the third flight of the integrated system, it seems there’s a long way to go.

Not that it’s completely out of reach. Musk recently said the company has applied for nine Starship launches in 2024. And SpaceX’s Star Base in Boca Chica, Texas, is always a hub of activity with boosters and Starships stacked up in rows.

“The thing that Musk does better than probably anybody else in any industry is to scale up and produce things at scale, in large quantities very quickly,” Fjeld said.

“I think he could easily you know, fly again in two months, and then a month-and-a-half, and then a month later, and then every week for the rest of the year at the end.”

For now, all eyes will be on what happens during IFT-3, to see if SpaceX achieves the milestones set out before it, and if it can collect enough data to fly again in rapid succession.

If SpaceX can’t, seeing new boot prints on the moon may be farther off than NASA or other space-watchers may like.

The Seattle Kraken trailed the Vegas Golden Knights after Tuesday’s second period. That really wouldn’t do against the team holding the second wild-card playoff spot in the West, a position the Kraken want badly but have just 18 games left to secure.

They got their needed third-period surge and just had to hold on for a critical regulation win.

“I liked everything, pretty much, until we scored our fourth goal,” Kraken center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare said. “From that point, we were on our heels instead of being on the attack.

“Liked everything but those goddamn last minutes, really.”

The Kraken let the Golden Knights erase a two-goal advantage in the final eight minutes. Vegas pulled goaltender Adin Hill for the extra attacker and teammate Jonathan Marchessault scored his second of the night with 17 seconds left to force overtime.

The Golden Knights’ Jack Eichel scored 3-on-3 to take the precious extra standings point in his team’s 5-4 victory at Climate Pledge Arena.

Going in, Kraken alternate captain Jordan Eberle called it the biggest game of the year, not because it was his 1,000th in the NHL but because the Kraken couldn’t afford to lose.

They hadn’t done things the easy way all season. Why start now? The Kraken turned in a solid second period but trailed, 2-1. They scored three times in the first 11:30 of the third period to take that 4-2 lead.

The Kraken’s young roommates kicked things off and connected on the tying goal 1:55 into the third period. Will Borgen took the point shot and Matty Beniers tipped it on net, ending his goal-scoring drought before it hit a month. Beniers netted his last goal Feb. 15 in Boston.

“I was pretty fired up,” Beniers said.

They all were, throwing a little extra passion into their goal celebrations, befitting the stakes. Bellemare appeared to make it 3-2 Seattle on a fluid, creative shift from the fourth line, which looked as if it had been playing together for years instead of weeks. Kailer Yamamoto dished the puck, Brandon Tanev planted himself nearby for a potential tip, Vegas defenseman Nicolas Hague thoughtfully provided a screen and Bellemare was credited with his first goal since Dec. 14. A broken leg sidelined him for two months of that span.

After the game, the goal was reassigned to Tanev.

“It’s a line goal, so who cares?” Bellemare reasoned.

Oliver Bjorkstrand piled on with a breakaway goal. Kraken linemate Eeli Tolvanen found Bjorkstrand near center ice and he sent the puck into the top corner, past Vegas goalie Hill’s (26 saves) glove.

William Karlsson, who had his fingerprints all over this game, tallied to tighten the score again, and the Kraken nearly made it out unscathed. Philipp Grubauer made 27 regulation saves for Seattle and two more in overtime.

The Kraken are now nine points behind Vegas and the postseason cutoff line.

“It stings to not hold the lead and walk away with two points,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said.

In a scoreless first period, the Kraken were almost bitten by an errant Tolvanen power-play rebound. Vegas’ Karlsson took off and looked poised to overtake Seattle defenseman Justin Schultz, but Schultz swung a desperation check toward Karlsson’s skates to Tolvanen and to safety.

Seattle threw Vegas back on its heels in the first four minutes of the second period. Andre Burakovsky converted a backward, no-look flick of a pass from Jared McCann for his second goal in three games, which made it 1-0 Seattle.

Vegas got it right back. The Kraken were nine seconds away from killing off a holding penalty administered to a visibly incensed Brian Dumoulin. As Grubauer slid over to block the back door, Marchessault tucked a shot into the roof of the net so carefully that the goal light didn’t come on. He was sure, though, and soon everyone else on the ice came around to the idea of a tied game.

The goal light was slow on the Golden Knights’ second goal, also nearly imperceptible. Right off a late second-period faceoff, which Seattle’s McCann was credited with winning, Vegas’ Pavel Dorofeyev picked up a bouncing puck out of teammate Karlsson’s legs and snapped it past Grubauer’s glove, all in the span of one second.

Grubauer flashed his glove at Michael Amadio, lunging forward to snag the Golden Knights winger’s shot, during a delayed penalty in the final 61 seconds of the second period. He made a similar save in overtime shortly before Eichel scored to end the game and kneecap Seattle’s playoff chances.

It had all the makings of a quintessentially Kraken win, a statement win, maybe even season-saving win, if not for those maddening last minutes.

“You saw a (goal) contribution from every single line. That’s when we’re at our best,” Beniers said.

“I thought we had a good performance, but it wasn’t good enough tonight.”

SINGAPORE – Private-sector economists raised their 2024 growth expectations for Singapore’s export-driven economy amid hopes of a pickup in global demand, recovery in the electronics sector and more robust growth in China.

The Republic’s gross domestic product growth (GDP) for 2024 was projected at 2.4 per cent, up from an earlier prediction of 2.3 per cent, according to a quarterly survey of professional forecasters released by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on March 13.

The respondents also expected the economy to grow by 2.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the first quarter of 2024.

Seventy-one per cent of the 23 economists who responded to the survey sent out in February ranked better-than-expected global growth for 2024 as the most likely upside for Singapore’s economic outlook.

Conversely, most forecasters cited slower-than-expected external growth and increased geopolitical tensions as risks to the economic outlook. The respondents also flagged inflationary pressures and disappointment on Chinese growth outlook as other major risks.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has projected that the Singapore economy would grow between 1 per cent and 3 per cent in 2024 as its trade-related sectors improve modestly.

However, MTI also flagged the risk that the cumulative effects of higher interest rates and a slower-than-expected Chinese economy may keep overall global growth depressed.

The respondents also gave their maiden forecast for 2025, with GDP next year projected to expand by 2.5 per cent.

Most of the forecasters were hopeful that both all-items inflation and core inflation – which excludes private transport and accommodation costs – would ease in 2024.

The median forecast of their all-Items inflation, or headline inflation, for the whole of the year came in at 3.1 per cent, down from 3.4 per cent in the December survey.

Meanwhile, the median forecast for core inflation was at 3 per cent, unchanged from the previous survey.

The MAS estimates that both headline and core inflation are likely to average between 2.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent in 2024.

For the labour market, the respondents to the survey expected the unemployment rate to come in at 2.1 per cent by the end of the year, unchanged from the previous survey.

Ministry of Manpower data shows overall unemployment averaged 1.9 per cent in 2023, while the resident unemployment rate came in at 2.7 per cent.

None of the respondents expected any change in MAS’ tight monetary policy stance in the upcoming April 2024 review. However, some predicted that the stance will start to shift towards easing in the July and October reviews.
