American drivers pay 45 percent more to fuel their daily commutes since President Joe Biden ascended to the White House, AAA data shows.

The national average gas price on Monday was $3.46 per gallon, according to AAA, up about 20 cents from last month.

When Biden assumed office, the national average was $2.38 per gallon, more than a dollar less than the current price. That is about a 45 percent increase since former President Donald Trump left office.

Gas prices are high by historical standards — and not just compared with the very low gas prices seen during the pandemic lockdowns, when the weekly national average gas price fell below $1.80. In 2018, gasoline averaged around $2.72 per gallon. The following year, the average was $2.60.

Gas prices remain high and could go higher due to industry and political factors. Biden’s economic war on American energy independence during instability in the Middle East and in Ukraine are significant factors.

GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan said the increased price of gas is attributed to seasonal demand. But consumers say the prices are not easy to accept.

“I need to fill up … yeah, I’m kind of getting used to it though,” Jessica Martinez, told NBC 7’s in Mission Valley, California.

“Am I filling it up? No, I’m not filling it up all the way,” said Galina Betker, who drives to visit her family every weekend. “It is a new expense, honestly.”

In Central Florida, prices surged last week to set a new high for 2024. “The jump at the pump may not be over yet,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said. “Drivers may be in line for another round of rising prices, after gasoline and crude oil futures rose to new 2024 highs last week.”

According to AAA, the top ten states with the largest increased gas prices are:

    • Texas (+10 cents), Alaska (+10 cents), Oregon (+9 cents), Washington, D.C. (+9 cents), Utah (+8 cents), New Mexico (+8 cents), Washington (+8 cents), Montana (+7 cents), Arizona (+6 cents) and Idaho (+5 cents).

The nation’s most expensive markets to fill a tank of gas are:

    • California ($4.87), Hawaii ($4.71), Washington ($4.24), Nevada ($4.14), Oregon ($3.98), Alaska ($3.76), Illinois ($3.70), Arizona ($3.64), Washington, D.C. ($3.57) and Pennsylvania ($3.50).

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden was returning from church a week ago when he stepped out of his armored SUV onto the driveway of his Wilmington, Delaware, home on an important mission: He wanted to inspect the landscaping.

The sprawling home on a manmade pond, three miles or five kilometers from downtown, has a special place — some might call it an obsession — in his heart.

When he met special prosecutor Robert Hur to talk about the sensitive documents he’d improperly kept after his vice presidency, Biden offered a confession. Three times over the five hours, Biden told Hur he is a “frustrated architect.”

He allowed that his wife, Jill, once offered to send him to architecture school if he’d only stop running for the Senate. It was not to be. But he still seems to have architectural design in his blood. And he’s mused privately about redesigning elements of the home after his presidency.

The house is central in the controversy over Biden’s handling of classified documents. FBI agents and the president’s lawyers identified at least 28 items there that contained classified information or markings from his time as vice president. Hur this past week defended his assessment that there was not sufficient evidence to charge Biden with willfully retaining the classified information.

In a transcript of Hur’s interview, conducted in the fall and released on the day a House committee heard the special counsel’s testimony, Biden lays out in meticulous detail the specifications of his home, prompting Hur to comment on his “photographic” recall even as he had questioned the president’s memory on other fronts.

When Biden hopped out to inspect the landscaping, the area had just been replanted after a roughly yearlong project by the Secret Service to improve security at the president’s compound. The work included new fencing and vehicle barriers, bulletproof windows and extensive modifications to the home demanded by the agency to make it more secure.

Satellite imagery from last year showed construction crews had dismantled the second-floor balcony and the sunroom overlooking the pond as part of the renovations to the south side of the 7,000-square-foot (650-square-meter) home and the grounds.

Ceiling fans from the sunroom were stored in Biden’s cluttered garage alongside his beloved Corvette in January 2023, when FBI agents spent nearly 13 hours doing a top-to-bottom search of the house looking for classified documents.

Referred to by Biden aides as the “lake house,” the home has been at the center of Biden’s life since he moved there in 1998. It has been the scene of meetings with aides and the occasional lawmaker for decades and the site of the makeshift basement studio from which he ran much of his 2020 presidential campaign during the pandemic.

Biden regularly spends his weekends at the Wilmington house, often staying from Friday to Monday. One bonus: It’s a quick hop to the Philadelphia area, the Democratic base in a critical swing state as Biden campaigns for reelection.

His Wilmington visits are something of a continuation of the commuting schedule he kept as vice president. During his three-decade Senate tenure before that, Biden commuted from Delaware to Washington daily on Amtrak.

The Delaware home is more than a gathering spot for members of his family and a few of his close friends or a respite from the prying eyes of the White House. Biden aides say he feels grounded in Wilmington, where his interactions with parishioners at church, his neighbors and even his gardener often form the basis of policy questions he asks his team when he gets back to Washington.

The construction project, which was under way when FBI agents searched his home, lasted more than a year, much to Biden’s chagrin.

“The FBI knows my house better than I do,” Biden quipped to Hur. A month earlier, he complained to reporters that, “I have no home to go to” during the construction.

Aides said Biden was exasperated with the pace of the renovations — a common experience for many homeowners — and being unable to go there to see the changes for months at a time made the process even more stressful. He wants to reverse some of those changes out of office.

The home was carefully laid out by the president after he and his wife purchased the property in 1996.

“I mean, I’m a frustrated architect, and if you went through, you probably saw all those significant number of house plans that I’ve drawn,” Biden told Hur, referring to one set of drawers opened by investigators.

Biden did some of the work on the home himself, sometimes with the help of his sons Hunter and the late Beau, and his brother Jimmy. The other changes he supervised with a careful eye for detail.

“There’s so damn many different contractors I’ve used,” he said, mentioning roofers, among others. “They busted their ass for three years to build the house.”

Biden furnished the home with a plenty of sentimental items, from the desk he used while serving in the Senate to knickknacks picked up over decades in public life. He’s got dozens of three-by-two photographs of moments from his years in office.

“I have them hanging on the walls all over the downstairs, the television room, and some in the library,” Biden told Hur.

A cottage at the top of the driveway now serves as a secure operations center for Secret Service agents and military officials. But it was home to Biden’s mother before she died in 2010 at age 92.

In subsequent years, as vice president, Biden collected $2,200 a month in rent payments for the guest house from the Secret Service.

Biden’s wood-paneled library is a particular point of pride in the home, with its chandelier and overstuffed leather sofas. It was there that investigators found his personal notebooks documenting key meetings from his time as vice president.

“I just wanted you to know I picked out the walnut tree that got cut down,” Biden told investigators. Some of that walnut ended up inside the home. “I picked out the craftsman to come do this — this room cost one third of the entirety of my entire home. Swear to God.”

“It looks like it,” Hur replied. “It’s very impressive.”

Pointing to seven different pieces of molding photographed by the FBI in the room, he added, “I got a little carried away.”

Reps. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) and Andy Ogles (R-TN) are calling on President Joe Biden to halt all immigration to the United States from Haiti as an armed militia terrorizes the country with what they are calling a “bloody revolution.”

In a letter, exclusively obtained by Breitbart News, the congressmen said they are “alarmed” at reports that the Biden administration is considering aiding a potential “mass exodus” of Haitians to the U.S., using Guantanamo Bay as a processing site.

“We are also concerned that this effort may be the first installment in a broader scheme to bring tens of thousands of additional Haitians into the United States outside of normal visa rules, worsening the disastrous migrant crisis that your policies have fueled here at home,” Tiffany and Ogles write.

The congressmen are urging Biden to shut down immigration from Haiti while an insurrection led by gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier is underway. Cherizier’s armed militia has already released thousands of prisoners from jails, kidnapped Catholic priests, and terrorized Christians.

“We’re not in a peaceful revolution. We are making a bloody revolution in the country because this system is an apartheid system, a wicked system,” Cherizier said of the insurrection.

The U.S., Tiffany and Ogles write, must not bear the brunt of turmoil abroad:

Over the last three years, your administration has ignored our immigration laws and abused its authority, transforming many American neighborhoods into dumping grounds overwhelmed with aliens from failed states. This must stop. It is not America’s responsibility to perpetually absorb large numbers of unstable, developing country nationals – and it does not serve the best interests of the American people to continue doing so. [Emphasis added]

Rather than making this already dire situation worse, we hope you will take this prospect entirely off the table by using your existing authority under Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to suspend the entry of Haitian nationals for the foreseeable future. [Emphasis added]

Tiffany and Ogles tell Biden that admitting tens of thousands of more Haitians will further strain social services, public resources, and cities’ infrastructure. Instead, Biden should ask nearby French-speaking territories to take in Haitians fleeing the situation, they write:

Instead of embarking on a process that will almost certainly end in large numbers of poorly vetted Haitians flooding into American communities – placing more pressure on local social services, safety net programs, public health infrastructure, and schools – you should press Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states and other French-speaking territories in the region to accept any “mass exodus” from Haiti. Other nations must, as you are so fond of saying, “pay their fair share.” [Emphasis added]

From 2021 through 2022, the U.S. has admitted roughly 142,500 Haitians on temporary visas, as well as nearly 22,000 Haitians on green cards to resettle in the U.S.

In addition to these legal immigration routes, Biden has extracted tens of thousands of Haitians from their native country via the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) parole pipeline into the U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris and rapper Fat Joe led a White House discussion Friday on easing marijuana penalties, with Harris saying it’s “absurd” that the federal government classifies marijuana as more dangerous than fentanyl, the synthetic opioid blamed for tens of thousands of deaths annually the United States.

Harris, a former state prosecutor in California, also criticized the federal classification of cannabis as “patently unfair.” The government currently is reviewing how it classifies marijuana, and Harris urged that the process be wrapped up as quickly as possible.

Fat Joe, a Grammy-nominated artist and philanthropist whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, moderated a subsequent closed-door discussion that included Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and individuals who received pardons for prior marijuana convictions.

President Joe Biden has issued pardons to thousands of people for federal marijuana possession and commuted long sentences handed down for nonviolent drug offenses. In 2022, he urged governors to pardon state offenses. Beshear then invited people convicted of simple marijuana possession to apply for pardons in Kentucky. Biden launched the process to review how marijuana is classified in 2022.

A full seven in 10 U.S. adults favor legalizing marijuana, according to Gallup polling. Support for legalization is closer to eight in 10 among 18- to 34-year-olds, a demographic whose support for Biden, who is seeking reelection, has softened since he took office.

“I cannot emphasize enough that they need to get to it as quickly as possible and we need to have a resolution based on their findings and their assessment,” Harris said of the Departments of Health and Human Services and Justice, which are handling the review.

“But this issue is stark when one considers the fact that on the schedule currently marijuana is considered as dangerous as heroin,” she said during the public portion of the meeting. “Marijuana is considered as dangerous as heroin and more dangerous than fentanyl, which is absurd. Not to mention patently unfair.”

“So I’m sure DEA is working as quickly as possible and will continue to do so and we look forward to the product of their work,” the vice president said, referring to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid blamed for tens of thousands of deaths annually in America.

U.S. regulators are studying reclassifying marijuana shifting it from a drug that has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” known as “Schedule I,” to the less tightly regulated “Schedule III.”

Biden mentioned the marijuana classification review during his State of the Union address earlier this month. He said during a campaign appearance in Milwaukee this week that “no one should be jailed for marijuana.”

“If you’re just using, you should have that wiped off your record,” Biden said.

Cartagena opened the roundtable by saying he’s hot on the issue of price transparency in health care “but, today, when the vice president calls me, I stop everything.”

He got a little ahead of himself when he proceeded to dismiss journalists so the closed-door discussion could begin, prompting Harris to tell him to “hold on” because she had a statement to make, too.

President Joe Biden mourned the death of Nex Benedict on Thursday, a nonbinary teen in Oklahoma who killed herself following an altercation with other students.

As the Associated Press (AP) reported, an autopsy determined that Dagny Benedict, who went by the name Nex, died by suicide from a toxic mix of pharmaceutical drugs the day after a supposed scuffle with three girls in the bathroom at their high school in Owasso, Oklahoma.

“Benedict was seen by a school nurse but was sent home and police were not contacted until Sue Benedict, the student’s grandmother and legal guardian, phoned later in the day from a hospital emergency room,” the AP noted. “In a video released by police, Nex Benedict told police from a hospital bed that Nex had poured water on three girls after being mocked over ‘the way that we dress … All three of them came at me.’”

Nex Benedict died in the hospital.

In this frame grab taken from body camera video provided by the Owasso, OK, Police Department, an officer speaks to 16-year-old Nex Benedict on Feb. 7, 2024. (Owasso Police Department via AP)

Sue Benedict claims her grandchild had been bullied by students for over a year, and the U.S. Education Department has pledged to open an investigation to determine whether the school district failed to properly handle the alleged “sex-based harassment.” As noted by Reason magazine, the facts of the case offer a grayer picture than just mere bullying:

Nex, who was a 16-year-old sophomore, said three freshman girls with whom they had never interacted before had a problem with them and their friend “because of the way that we dress,” although the basis for that supposition is unclear. The specific impetus for the fight was the three freshman girls’ mockery of the way that Nex and their friend were laughing. “They had said something like, ‘Why do they laugh like that?’” Nex told a police officer. “They were talking about us in front of us. And so I went up there and I poured water on them. And then all three of them came at me.”

The freshman girls “grabbed onto my hair,” Nex said. “I grabbed onto them. I threw one of them into a paper towel dispenser. And then they got my legs out from under me, got me on the ground, and started beating the shit out of me. And then my friend tried to jump in and help, but I’m not sure—I blacked out.” The school district said other students and a staff member broke up the fight after a couple of minutes.

Police officers also told Sue Benedict that she was welcome to file a report, but they cautioned that the parents of the girls could also do the same.

“But I’m just letting you know, if the other party wants to do the same thing … the assault will be on her as well, because she first assaulted. She was the one who initiated it, essentially, because you’ve got freedom of speech … [but] the moment she threw that water, you’ve now assaulted somebody. You’ve made the first jab. It doesn’t make it right, but they defended themselves, quote unquote. You retaliated back. Now we’ve got this back and forth, when both parties had an equal opportunity to separate,” the officer said.

No police reports were filed. Nex, a biological female, had also been using the bathroom corresponding with her biological gender as prescribed by Oklahoma law.

In a statement on Thursday, President Biden called Nex Benedict a “kid who just wanted to be accepted.”

“Every young person deserves to have the fundamental right and freedom to be who they are, and feel safe and supported at school and in their communities. Nex Benedict, a kid who just wanted to be accepted, should still be here with us today,” wrote the president.

“Nonbinary and transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But nobody should have to be brave just to be themselves. In memory of Nex, we must all recommit to our work to end discrimination and address the suicide crisis impacting too many nonbinary and transgender children,” he continued.

After sending his condolences to Nex’s family and denouncing bullying, the president then addressed the broader LGBTQI+ community.

Joe Mazzulla is a man of principles. And the Celtics coach doesn’t forget or ignore them, no matter the circumstances.

He proved it again in a moment that went viral near the end of the Celtics’ win over the Suns on Thursday night at TD Garden. Jaylen Brown had just thrown down a monster slam on Grayson Allen that put the Celtics up 18 with three minutes left in the game. Suns coach Frank Vogel called a timeout, ready to throw in the towel and remove his starters.

On the other side, Mazzulla stayed engaged on the action even after the whistle. As Suns forward Royce O’Neale threw up a harmless, deep 3-pointer, Mazzulla came out of nowhere to try to block the shot. It was wildly unusual. Typically, those after-the-whistle shots are contested by players on the court, not by a coach from the sideline.

But according to Mazzulla, it’s an organization rule to do what he did. And it doesn’t matter if it’s a coach or a player – he demands for it to be followed.

“I saw a guy going in to try to get a shot,” Mazzulla said. “He hadn’t made one, and I didn’t want him to feel good about himself going to the bench. … That’s the bench rule. Guys don’t shoot shots in front of our bench to go back to their bench to feel good about themselves. If I’m going to ask the guys to contest, (the) staff has to do the same.

“I just think it’s important. I think it’s a small detail of the game. It’s a little gamesmanship, but you can’t have guys going back to the bench feeling good about themselves.”

For Mazzulla, it didn’t matter that the game was lopsided and that there was barely any time left. He set a standard and expectation for the rule, and there are no exceptions.

“There’s a dead ball,” Mazzulla said. “I did it last year. We’ve done it multiple times. I mean, I don’t care. At the end of the day, it’s about the mindset and approach that we bring in. It’s within the rules of the game. …

“It’s about just setting the tone. It’s that. So one of my biggest pet peeves is just thinking that a guy’s just going to get a free shot, and it’s just not the way it works. And if we’re going to hold our team to the standard, then hold the staff to the same thing. So there’s been times where we’ve missed it and I’ve held the staff accountable to it, and you’ve got to do the best job you can of not doing it.”

Brown didn’t see Mazzulla’s contest of O’Neale because he was busy celebrating after his dunk, but he wasn’t surprised when he heard what transpired.

“That sounds like Joe Mazzulla,” Brown said.

“I’ve definitely seen him do it in the past. If the guy keeps trying to shoot, Joe will just keep playing defense. He’ll take it as far as he needs to. I missed that one. I wish I would’ve seen it, though.”

Jayson Tatum saw it, and he didn’t blink an eye.

    “Joe being Joe,” Tatum said.

“That’s who Joe is. So when he did it, I wasn’t caught off guard. I expect him or one of the coaches to do that. Gotta love Joe for Joe.”

    Music

“You take the man out of the city, not the city out the man,” the “Stranger Things” star sings in “End of Beginning,” a song you might know from TikTok.

Newburyport native Joe Keery goes by the stage name, DJO. Guido Gazzilli

If you’ve been living under a rock or in the Upside Down, it’s possible you haven’t heard of DJO. But perhaps you know him by a different name.

Joe Keery, 31, grew up in Newburyport and spent his early 20s in Chicago, before landing a big role on Netflix‘s “Stranger Things” as high-school-jerk-turned-America’s-sweetheart Steve Harrington. He also recently starred in the TV series, “Fargo,” as Jon Hamm’s horrible son, Gator Tillman.

Keery has been up to a lot lately. In recent weeks, he presented at the Brit Awards, and has risen to the top of the global charts with “End of Beginning” a hit from his 2022 sophomoric album, “DECIDE.”

And not to mirror what’s been happening in the Upside Down, but the sharp trending peak of an album two years post-release is reminiscent of how Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” returned to top the charts years after its release.

The eclectic Newburyport native shared how he’s feeling about topping the charts, what Spotify playlist vibe suits him, where to find the “best bagels of your life” on the North Shore, and more in a wide-ranging interview over Zoom.

The below interview was edited and condensed for clarity.

Boston.com: I’m really thankful you carved out time for this.

Joe Keery: Hometown. Let’s go. Absolutely.

So, you’ve been busy lately. “End of Beginning” has surpassed 80M streams, you just presented at the Brit Awards, how has this period of time been for you? How have things been lately?

Yeah, it’s been really exciting to see so many people kind of discovering and connecting and kind of putting the pieces together with this thing. It came out like just under two years ago, and for it to sort of find new life is crazy. Really, and kind of beyond my understanding in a way.

“End of Beginning” is nostalgic. People have called it a love letter to Chicago and it’s sort of launched a whole online genre where people are romanticizing places, people, times in their lives. What are some places, maybe including Chicago, that you like to romanticize yourself?

The song is a love letter to my Chicago. So it’s, you know, my experience that I had there, which was in my late teens, early 20s. Every time I go back to the city and I go to the places and I smell the smells of the city, and see the people, it’s just kind of like I’m brought back there, you know. So much time has gone by and nothing has changed at the same time.

And so, yeah, I have that in a lot [of places]. You know, in my hometown I have that. Going to the Cape, I feel like I have that. Some of my family’s from the south— so, going down south. Yeah. It’s really funny, though, how sometimes the brain just makes these kind of snapshot connections and you can kind of long for them. And then also at the same time kind of happy that they happened, but sad that they’re over. So yeah, the brain is a funny thing.

Are there places, when you mention home, that you miss? Or each time you’re back here you find yourself gravitating towards?

I’m from the North Shore, so I just love being by the water and smelling the ocean. Actually, when I lived in Chicago, that was the thing that I missed most. [It] was just the smell of the sea.

When you’re back in Massachusetts or around here, what are your favorite things to do? Like in 2023, when you visited Nunan’s flower shop in Georgetown. That seemed like a fun time.

Yeah, that was. I remember that day very well. Me and my mother were there and we picked out a tree. We picked out a fig tree and we planted that. Or, a fig tree and a dogwood tree for her yard. And that’s basically what I like to do when I’m home, just spend time with my parents and my sisters, and see friends. It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing, but just spending time together.

    Any local shoutouts?

Flatbread [Company in Amesbury]. That place is amazing. I love it. Also Abe’s bagels [Abraham’s Bagels & Pizza, in Newburyport]. You’ll never get a better bagel in your whole life.

With your music persona, and, of course, your work on screen, too, you’ve played a lot of different characters, with Steve Harrington on “Stranger Things,” and then a very opposite character in “Fargo.” Which version of yourself, in playing these different roles, do you find yourself most comfortable in?

That’s a good question. You know, doing “Stranger Things” — that’s kind of like my first real job. And so there’s definitely a level of comfort I have now, just because we’ve been doing it for a while and I feel like I really understand the character, and also the setting of all the people on set and the directors. We just have such a close bond at this point. But I think the goal is really to just try to find a little bit of that in every single place and every single job. And like a little connection there, even, you know, like that character in “Fargo,” as horrible as a person he is, the only way to really get the job done is if you can kind of find the humanity in the character. So yeah, I guess that’s a bit of the job.

Which song on “DECIDE” was the most fun track to make, or one that in the creative process you had a lot of fun with?

A lot of them for a lot of different reasons. I really like that song “Go For It” because the bridge was a really interesting thing to work on. Also “End of Beginning” really has a special place because we did it last and we tracked the drums and the bass and the guitar live in the same room. So that was really exciting.

We showed up in the morning. We were drinking coffee, and we needed one more song, and I had this idea. So we talked about the form and then we really just did it very quickly. We were trying to move as fast as possible. And it was maybe, you know, an hour and a half or two hours later, we kind of had those core instruments tracked and then we started layering things on top. So, the fun in that one really was that we were able to move so quickly and cover so much ground, and we’re trying to just be as least precious as possible. So yeah, that was a really fun memory that I look back on fondly.

Which artists are you personally very into right now?

Right now, let’s look at my phone because I feel like that’s probably the most telling. I was just listening to that Ariana Grande album. That’s cool. She did good. I also really like that new Beyoncé song … She’s killing it. I like Mk.gee. That guy. I was listening to Matt Champion’s new song, “Slug.” I was just at the Brits and kind of was really introduced to RAYE and her music is absolutely insane and she’s fantastic. Looks like I’m listening to a little Kendrick Lamar. Little Alvvays, that band’s really good. I’m all over the map. I like to keep it eclectic and, you know, open for anything.

I don’t know if you’ve seen on Spotify, with the daylist, it auto-picks like a random generated playlist for you and sometimes the terms are kind of silly. Like mine yesterday was “viral heartbreak Thursday afternoon.” So, I don’t know what that says about me. But if you had to sort of pick words to describe your playlist, what do you think they would say?

I wonder what mine actually is. This is on your Spotify? It tells you this?

Yes, if you search “daylist” in your little search bar, it should autopopulate one for you.

Daylist. Okay, let’s do it. Let’s see what it does. “Laurel Canyon hippie Friday afternoon.” [Laughs] I’m down with that.

That’s great. Do you think that suits you?

I’m super down with that. Yeah, definitely. That’s right up my alley. Yeah. Look at this. A little George Harrison, the Alessi Brothers, Beach Boys. Wings. Art Garfunkel. Yeah, this is great. Mamas and the Papas. Come On, Steely Dan, Minnie Riperton, Todd Rundgren. Yeah, this is good.

    That sounds like a vibe.

Yeah, this is a fantastic — if I had, like, nothing else to do for the rest of the day, just like driving around, listening to this. That would be a fantastic way to spend a day, especially in L.A., of all places. Let’s go.

I thought if this were ever to happen, that maybe would be the song to do it just because it’s sort of like an odd bird. That song is kind of a real weird song, that it’s just kind of like funny also in a way. So yeah, you and me are on the same page there.

Can we expect new music soon?

Yeah, yeah, I think so … The album came out a long while ago and I’ve just been kind of working ever since then on this stuff. So it’s always kind of, you know, things are always moving, moving around. So I’m getting close to hopefully something soon and looking forward to sharing it, especially now after this. It makes me feel even more excited.

Do you feel that wrapping up some of your projects — like the final season of “Stranger Things” winding down — has this motivated you into a new creative era?

Yeah, definitely. It’ll be really end of an era, too, for me. So, I’m excited to see what happens. I mean, kind of at the beginning of a patch of unknown.

Dare I say the end of a beginning?

Exactly, yeah. I didn’t want to say it myself. But you did. [Laughs.]

Neil Young says he is returning to Spotify after removing his music from the streaming platform to boycott podcaster Joe Rogan. Young voluntarily removed his music from Spotify in 2022 after Rogan, whose podcast was exclusively on Spotify, had a controversial infectious disease expert on as a guest during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Spotify, the #1 streamer of low res music in the world – Spotify, where you get less quality than we made, will now be home of my music again,” a post on the Neil Young Archives website reads, taking a dig at the service.

In 2022, Rogan interviewed Dr. Robert Malone, who was banned from Twitter for spreading misinformation on COVID-19. Malone had an anti-vaccine and a group of health experts penned a letter to Spotify calling on the platform to remove Rogan after his “highly controversial episode” with the doctor.

The group said Rogan and Malone made claims on the show that have been discredited. Young also spoke up, saying Spotify was complicit in spreading misinformation.

The artist, known for hits like “Harvest Moon” and “Heart of Gold,” told the company that it could have his music or Rogan’s podcast — “not both.”

Spotify agreed to remove Young’s music from the service and his hits hadn’t been available on the platform since.

But last month, Rogan signed a new deal with Spotify, which allows his podcast to be streamed on other platforms like YouTube and Apple, according to Associated Press.

Young said he can’t leave music services like Apple and Amazon like he did Spotify, because he would be left with very few options to stream his music. So, despite the fact that they are now streaming Rogan’s podcast, he is staying on other platforms and returning to Spotify.

He said he hopes Spotify improves their sound quality, suggesting the company add a limited Hi Res and “build from there.”

Young’s decision to remove his songs from Spotify gained support from fellow artist Joni Mitchell, who removed all of her albums except for a live album recorded with the BBC in 2023, which is still her only music on the platform.

Even WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, praised Young’s strong stance against vaccine misinformation. “[Neil Young], thanks for standing up against misinformation and inaccuracies around #COVID19 vaccination,” he tweeted. “Public and private sector, in particular #socialmedia platforms, media, individuals – we all have a role to play to end this pandemic and infodemic.”

After Young and Mitchell left the platform, Spotify said it would add an advisory to podcasts that discuss COVID-19

Rogan responded, saying he is happy to have the disclaimer. “I’m not trying to promote misinformation, I’m not trying to be controversial,” he said. “I’ve never tried to do anything with this podcast other than to just talk to people.”

Rogan has said he had no hard feelings toward Young or Mitchell.

Popular radio host Charlamagne tha God is warning Democrats that their party is hemorrhaging black voters and insisted that this could become very clear in the 2024 election.

The radio shock jock and comedian, born Lenard Larry McKelvey, appeared on the Vox podcast Today Explained with Noel King on March 10 where he pointed out that the Democrat Party really hasn’t done much to help the black community, Vox reported.

“I mean, Democrats have done more, but we haven’t really seen anybody systemically help us get out of this situation that we’re in, because I think that’s something that people never truly address,” he told King.

But the broadcaster also pointed out that Joe Biden is not just losing support among blacks and he said it was foolish just to say Biden is losing the black vote.

“When people say this nowadays, I’m like, why are they just focusing on the Black voters when you see him going lower and lower with everybody?” he said.

Charlamagne also pushed back against those on the left who say you should not be critical of the Biden-Harris ticket. He noted they say Trump is a “threat to democracy,” so you can’t criticize Biden. But Charlamagne is not swayed by that argument.

“If we have a threat to democracy on the other side, what’s wrong with asking that question? Are they still a winnable ticket? When you look at the polls, when you look at the approval rating, what’s wrong with asking that question? When David Axelrod said [it], nobody said anything,” he said of questioning Biden’s ability to beat Trump in Nov.

“But when the Black guy from the hip-hop station in a hoodie says something, then everybody has a problem with it,” he explained. “Any power that I have is derived from the people. I’m literally only asking the questions that I hear everyday working-class people ask of me when they call into the radio station in the morning or when I’m walking the streets in New York or when I’m home in South Carolina. These are the things that I’m hearing people say.”

The entertainer then added that he got pushback from left-wingers like MSNBC for saying that immigration will be a very important issue in the coming election.

“You have people in Chicago, you have people in New York complaining about the resources that they feel the migrants were getting, that people in the community that have been there forever aren’t receiving,” he said. “And you literally had MSNBC run a headline that said, Charlamagne the God is pushing MAGA messaging. Now, two months later, that’s all everybody’s talking about is the border. So literally, my answer came from talking to regular, everyday people. So how is it MAGA messaging if it’s coming from the people?”

When asked if he thought that 23 percent of blacks really might vote for Trump, the broadcaster demurred and insisted that Biden could turn that around if only he starts campaigning the right way.

“When you look at Joe Biden’s approval ratings, he’s getting his ass kicked everywhere. It’s not just Black people. So I think that in order to really get that campaign on the right track, they’ve got to start looking at the totality of what’s happening with that campaign and how different groups of people feel about him,” he said.

NEW YORK – Neil Young will return his music to Spotify, two years after withdrawing it in protest over podcast host Joe Rogan’s shows about Covid-19, the veteran rock musician announced on his website on March 12.

Without naming Rogan, Young wrote: “My decision comes as music services Apple and Amazon have started serving the same disinformation podcast features I had opposed at Spotify.”

Rogan, 56, previously had an exclusive deal with Spotify, which has since been renewed to allow wider distribution of his show.

In January 2022, Young drew wide attention by accusing Spotify of “spreading fake information about vaccines” through Rogan’s show, and the 78-year-old gave the platform an ultimatum: “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”

Rogan, a comedian and actor, has become one of the most popular and influential figures in podcasting with his show The Joe Rogan Experience, which features long, freewheeling interviews with guests like billionaire Elon Musk, rapper Ye, scientists and fellow comedians.

Days before Young’s public letter, a group of doctors, scientists and public health officials asked Spotify to crack down on Covid-19 misinformation, pointing to an episode of Rogan’s show that featured Dr Robert Malone, a virus expert and vaccine sceptic who promoted a theory that millions of people had been “hypnotised” about the coronavirus.

Following Young’s protest, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell also removed her music from Spotify, and R&B singer India.Arie circulated clips showing Rogan using a racial slur repeatedly on the show.

Rogan apologised for his use of the word, and Spotify quietly removed dozens of episodes of his show. Rogan also said he was willing to have “more experts with differing opinions right after I have the controversial ones”.

In a public statement at the time, Spotify’s chief executive Daniel Ek said, “It is important to me that we don’t take on the position of being content censor while also making sure that there are rules in place and consequences for those who violate them.”

The company added a “content advisory” notice to any podcast episode that involved Covid-19.

Spotify signed Rogan to a deal in 2020, worth at least US$200 million (S$266 million), that made his show exclusive to that platform.

In February, the company announced a new, multi-year arrangement with Rogan in which Spotify would also distribute The Joe Rogan Experience to other podcast platforms, as well as YouTube. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the new deal could be worth as much as US$250 million.

In his statement on March 12, Young did not give a timeline for when his music would return to Spotify, and a representative of Spotify did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In 2023, in an analysis of how Young’s streaming activity had changed since withdrawing his music from Spotify, Billboard estimated that the protest had cost him about US$16,000 in royalties per month. NYTIMES
