Jordan North stepped down from BBC Radio 1 after a decade on their airwaves and is now pursuing a ‘never done before’ project.

As well as taking over from Roman Kemp at the Capital FM breakfast show, he has fronted his first documentary, which tackles the subject of vaping.

The BBC programme, Jordan North: The Truth About Vaping, sees the 34-year-old address his habit, and assess how bad it is for him.

The episode, which is available to watch on BBC iPlayer, is a new avenue for Jordan.

‘Never really done this sort of thing before, I promise it’s not preachy just wanted to find out more about it!’ he wrote on X.

Here, we take a look at his career so far, his reason for wanting to present a documentary on vaping, and his love life…

    Vaping documentary

Jordan began smoking when he was 16 and decided to take up vaping a few years ago to help him cut down on cigarettes. The plan worked with Jordan cutting down to around five per day, but now he has a new issue – the amount he vapes.

‘Everyone said it was healthier, but now there’s loads of conflicting views,’ he summarised on the documentary. Calling himself a ‘clueless’ vaper, he wanted to get answers for people like him. In 2023, one in seven 18-24-year-olds – half of them never smoked cigarettes before.

Jordan discovers a dark underside of the habit with around 45 million illegal vapes being sold last year. He found that a lot of vapes contained toxic metal lead – high levels of exposure in young people can detrimentally impact the development of the brain and nervous system, reports The World Health Organisation. He also found that they can contain more nicotine than a cigarette.

Jordan made a big decision at the end of the episode (Picture: BBC/Northern Child/Andrew Eastel)

After visiting a scientist, Jordan’s ‘alarm bells were ringing’ at the amount of chemicals going in his body.

As research is in its infancy, we currently can’t be sure of what vaping does to the body, but after meeting other vapers with health issues and speaking to experts, Jordan decided he wanted to abandon his vape.

‘The risks feel pretty real for me right now. I really don’t want to be vaping any longer. I don’t want to be glued to this little stick in my head,’ he concluded.

Although this is Jordan’s first documentary as he was waiting for a subject that he was passionate about exploring, he has done plenty of other exciting projects throughout his career.

He began his life on the radio on regional stations, including Sunderland’s Spark FM, and Preston FM before winning a competition which landed him on The Hits Radio.

His big break came in 2014 when he landed freelance cover presenter gigs on BBC Radio 1. His hard work paid off and by 2017 Jordan had his own Sunday show.

Outside of the day job he has been presenting podcast Help I Sexted My Boss with friend and etiquette expert William Hanson since 2018. The pair bring their unique perspectives to advise listeners on modern-day problems. The award-winning podcast is currently in its 12th series!

Jordan made an impact on the TV world by signing up to I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, which was set in a Welsh castle due to Covid-19 restrictions, in 2020. He finished in second place, with Giovanna Fletcher just pipping him to the post for the crown.

Despite being trapped inside a coffin of snakes, being showered with bugs, and being forced to chow down on a sheep’s penis he remained upbeat – largely thanks to his ‘happy place’ – Turf Moor – the home ground of Burnley FC. He won a legion of fans with his sweet nature.

After his reality TV stint, Jordan felt inspired to take more risks. ‘I used to turn a lot of work down and say no to things because I liked staying in this safe, cosy comfortable lane,’ he told us. ‘Now I’m like, “Let’s do it. If it goes wrong it goes wrong.” I’ve just got more confidence.’

He’s certainly done that with appearances on Celebrity Big Brother: Late and Live, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and a job presenting Top of the Pops. Of course, he’s got his new role at Capital FM too, which begins next month.

Jordan was popular on I’m A Celeb (Picture: Rex)

‘Getting to host Capital Breakfast has always been a dream of mine and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I simply couldn’t turn down,’ he said of the upcoming job.

Capital’s Chris Stark, who was also previously on Radio 1, is ‘buzzing’ to be reunited with his former colleague, along with fellow breakfast show presenter Sian Welby.

    Mysterious love life

Back when he entered I’m A Celeb castle he revealed his single status.

‘I am single at the moment. But that is not the reason why I am going in,’ he shared.

After his success on the show, there was more interest in his romantic life, but he’s made a conscious effort to keep it out of the spotlight.

He told the Mirror: ‘I’ve always tried to keep things pretty private. It’s sometimes quite unnerving when people are asking about your personal life but you know what, it’s part and parcel of the job.’

Jordan has also spoken about being at a different life stage to his friends. ‘How do all of my friends have kids, yet the biggest life decision I’ve ever made is going from skinny jeans to a slim fit?’ he asked.

On his podcast, Jordan did give another insight into his private life, when he admitted to once being tied up with a dressing room chord after a listener asked if he was kinky.

‘He regrets that now,’ co-host William told Metro.co.uk.

Jordan North: The Truth About Vaping is on BBC Three at 9pm and is available on BBC iPlayer now.

The organiser of the viral Willy Wonka “immersive experience” says the trainwreck of an event ruined his life after he received hundreds of hate messages in the fallout.

Billy Coull, director of the House of Illuminati organisation behind the Willy Wonka-inspired event in Scotland, has broken his silence over the PR disaster.

Families who had paid $44 to attend the “magical realm” arrived to find a sparsely decorated warehouse in Glasgow that they compared to a meth lab with children left in tears of disappointment and horror.

Mr Coull said since images from the event went viral online last month he had received “hundreds and hundreds” of hate mail.

“My life is ruined,” he explained in the Channel 5 special Wonka: The Scandal That Rocked Britain that aired in the UK last week.

“I have lost my friends. I’ve lost the love of my life. I was made out to be the face of all evil. And genuinely, that’s really not the case.”

Mr Coull explained that the team had hired a venue too large for the scale of the event and projection equipment that never arrived let them down.

“I was gutted,” he said “But I believed that we could push on.”

“I was hoping for an event that would be joyful, happy. I wanted people to experience happiness.”

The event titled Willy’s Chocolate Experience invited fans to journey into “a universe where confectionary dreams are brought to life” that included “mind-expanding projections, optical marvels and exhibits that transport you into the realm of creativity” and “wondrous creations and enchanting surprises at every turn”.

The attraction was not affiliated with the Warner Bros. movie Wonka, despite the event’s marketing coming as close as possible to suggesting it was based on author Roald Dahl’s creation.

The event was compared to a meth lab.

There was also limited lollies on offer even though children had been promised “sweet delights and confections”.

In another shock to customers, there were actors who delivered what sounded like AI-generated lines to which Mr Coull admitted he did run his scripts through AI, but only to check spelling and continuity of the lines.

Scotland police were eventually called to the scene and the event was shut down.

As a result of the failure, Mr Coull refunded tickets and issued an apology for the “very stressful and frustrating day”.

“Unfortunately, last minute we were let down in many areas of our event and tried our best to continue on and push through and now realise we probably should have cancelled first thing this morning instead,” a statement said.

JetBlue Airways told staff on Tuesday that it is culling a host of routes, making it the carrier’s latest move to cut costs in the wake of a failed attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines and a Pratt & Whitney engine issue that has grounded some of its Airbus planes.

The carrier will reduce its departures from Los Angeles International Airport from about 34 a day to 24, focusing on profitable transcontinental routes that include its Mint business class cabin, according to a memo to staff, which was seen by CNBC. Cuts include service from Los Angeles to San Francisco; Seattle; Miami; Las Vegas; Reno, Nevada; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

JetBlue is also ending flights to Bogota, Colombia; Quito, Ecuador; Lima, Peru; and Kansas City, Missouri, in June, and flights between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Austin, Atlanta, Nashville and Salt Lake City as well as between New York and Detroit.

“With less aircraft time available and the need to improve our financial performance, more than ever, every route has to earn its right to stay in the network,” Dave Jehn, vice president of network planning and airline partnerships, said in the memo.

Along with transcontinental flying, JetBlue said it will focus on “bread and butter” routes along the East Coast, and those serving Caribbean vacation destinations.

CEO Joanna Geraghty is a month into the top job and is under increasing pressure to reduce expenses and return the airline to profitability after activist investor Carl Icahn disclosed a nearly 10% stake in the carrier last month and won two board seats.

JetBlue had already begun a cost-cutting program before Icahn’s stake and said in January that it was on track to reduce expenses by $200 million by the end of the year. The carrier trimmed some other routes earlier this year, CNBC reported.

The changes announced Tuesday don’t affect JetBlue’s planned capacity for the year, which it expects to be down in the low single digits from 2023, the memo said.

JetBlue is charting its path as a stand-alone airline after a judge blocked its plan to purchase Spirit Airlines in January. JetBlue walked away from that deal entirely earlier this month. Last year, a separate judge knocked down its partnership with American Airlines in the Northeast.

A record high number of Americans say the role of religion in public life is shrinking and most believe this to be bad for the country, the Pew Research Center reports.

According to the survey, 57 percent of Americans believe religion plays a positive role in public life, while only 19 percent have a negative view of the role of religion.

Overall, “there are widespread signs of unease with religion’s trajectory in American life,” Pew reveals, and this dissatisfaction “is not just among religious Americans.”

A remarkable 80 percent of U.S. adults currently believe the influence of religion in American life is dwindling, Pew finds, and over 60 percent of these think this is a bad thing.

Leftists like Hollywood producer Rob Reiner have proclaimed a dangerous rise in “Christian nationalism” and one Politico reporter recently suggested that those who share Thomas Jefferson’s belief that human rights come from God rather than government are all “Christian nationalists,” presumably plotting a theocratic coup d’état.

Pew found, however, more than half of Americans (54 percent) have never even heard of Christian nationalism.

According to the Pew survey, 44 percent of Americans say the government should not declare the country a Christian nation but should promote Christian moral values.

Commenting on the report, Catholic League president Bill Donohue said that Americans’ concern for the decline in religion in public life likely has to do with the fact that “the inculcation of religious values has a stabilizing effect on individuals, and hence on society.”

RELATED: “Jesus Kills Women!” Abortion Activists MOCK Christians Praying at Supreme Court

Public Advocate of the United States

Character building, which is essential to citizenship, “is facilitated by religion,” Donohue added. “Unfortunately, American society has become more unstable and character building has become more difficult.”

Dr. Donohue also noted that the majority of Americans echo the belief of the Founders, who did not want an established church, but maintained that the nation “would benefit by advancing Christian-inspired values.”

CHARLES Sobhraj was accused of more than two dozen murders throughout India, Thailand, Nepal, Turkey, and Iran in the 1970s.

However, he was never convicted of murder until 2004.

    1

He was portrayed in the series The SerpentCredit: Channel 4

Who were the real life victims of Charles Sobhraj?

    Teresa Knowlton

Teresa was a 21-year-old from Seattle in the US.

She was on her way to join a Buddhist monastery when she met Sobhraj in October 1975.

She’s believed to be Sobhraj’s first female victim after he drugged and drowned her in a tidal pool.

Teresa was found by a farmer who saw a woman floating face down in the rising tide.

Later, Sobhraj said: “I killed her because she was transporting drugs.”

The criminal claimed Teresa had said she was transporting heroin for money.

    Vitali Hakim

Vitali was Sobhraj’s second known victim.

He was a young Sephardic Jewish boy whose body was found on a road.

He was found near Pattaya, where The Serpent was staying, on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand.

    Henk Bintanja and Cornelia Hemker

Dutch couple Henk, 29, and Cornelia 25, were both victims of Sobhraj’s sick crimes.

They were drugged, strangled and burned by the serial killer and his accomplices.

Their bodies were discovered two days later on December 18, 1975.

The Serpent killer Charles Sobhraj clashes with former cop Jackie Malton in new C4 doc

    Charmayne Carrou

Charmayne was the girlfriend of Hakim.

She was drowned after she came looking for her missing partner at Sobhraj’s resort.

Laurent Ormond Carrière and Connie Bronzich

Laurent, 26, from Canada, was murdered in Nepal, along with American woman Connie Bronzich, 29.

Sobhraj and his accomplice Marie-Andrée Leclerc then used their passports to fly back to Thailand.

    I didn’t kill a single person.”

    Charles Sobhraj

    Avoni Jacob

    Avoni was an Israeli scholar.

He was murdered by Sobhraj who wanted to use his passport.

He first used it to fly to Singapore, then to India, followed by a return to Bangkok in March of 1976.

After Sobhraj, Leclerc and their righthand man, Ajay Chowdhury, were interrogated by Thai police but were released.

    Jean-Luc Solomon

His next victim was Frenchman Jean-Luc Solomon.

He died from the poison intended to incapacitate him during a robbery.

    WHO IS THE SERPENT?

Posing as a gem dealer, Charles Sobhaj usually poisoned then slaughtered hippies whom he hated for their lifestyle.

After killing them, he would often take money and passports.

Sobhraj was dubbed “The Serpent” due to his conniving ways and constant escapism from reprimand.

How many people did Charles Sobhraj murder?

Sobhraj was sentenced and convicted in Nepal over the deaths of Laurent Carriere, Connie Bronzich, and Jean-Luc Solomon.

However, it’s believed that he may have been behind many more tourist deaths throughout Asia.

Unfortunately, he has never been linked to any crimes in Thailand.

Other murders he’s been tied to include Teresa Knowlton, Turk Vitali Hakim, Charmayne Carrou, and Dutch students Henk Bintanja and Cornelia Hemker.

Overall, It is thought that Sobhraj murdered at least 20 tourists in South and Southeast Asia, including 14 in Thailand.

He was convicted and jailed in India from 1976 to 1997.

After his release, he returned to France followed by a trip to Nepal in 2003, where he was arrested, tried, and given a life sentence.

But Sobhraj is now a free man after being released in December 2022 from a prison in Nepal, where he served 19 years of his prison term.

He has inspired various dramatisations over the years and has been described by those who knew him as a con artist and a seducer.

A new Channel 4 documentary, The Real Serpent, puts his crimes under the spotlight once more with unprecedented access to the man himself.

While the criminal admits to drugging and stealing from victims, he dismisses accusations he killed the backpackers as “a lot of imagination.”

“I did wrong to some people and those wrongs were immoral but I didn’t go to the length of killing anyone,” he says. “I didn’t kill a single person.

“I’m fed up with all the allegations so I decided I’m going to put forward my facts and (the public) can decide.

DENVER (KDVR) — Boulder-based celebrity and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders published a new book last week and now he’s making the rounds to promote “Elevate and Dominate: 21 Ways to Win On and Off the Field.”

Sanders caps off his book tour at the University of Colorado Boulder for a signing at Macky Auditorium. The event will feature Sanders speaking about his new book, as well as conversations with Dr. J. Richard Stevens, associate dean for Undergraduate Education and associate professor in Media Studies at CU Boulder, and C. D. Neely, aka Uncle Neely, the producer of Thee Pregame Show.

Sanders is billing his book as a motivational text.

“Deion Sanders is one of the greatest motivators and inspirational leaders of all time—on the field, in business, with family, and in his community,” CU Boulder wrote in a release. “Now, he delivers the ultimate playbook of inspiring personal stories, winning strategies, and the motivation required to help us ‘elevate and dominate’ in all aspects of our lives.”

The book also discusses Sanders’ religious faith, respect for himself and others, and an unfettered commitment to pursuing what he believes in as he breaks down 21 inspirational ways to win at life, based on his own life experience and stories.

“Coach Prime” made stops in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and other cities, as well as appearances on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the Kelly Clarkson Show and the Today Show to promote the book.

During his appearance on the Tonight Show, Sanders addressed some of his biggest accomplishments in the past year, including being named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year and coaching the CU Buffaloes, who had a sold-out season for the first time in almost 30 years.

Coach Prime also spoke about his new book, which he said can be read from any chapter if the reader chooses.

“We wrote it the way I talk … so the audio is like the way I talk,” Sanders told Fallon. “I’m really talking to you through this book.”

Just for the city of Boulder, CU football generated over $113 million and the school received 20% more applications this year.

“I’m happy and I’m excited about the fan base, about the student body, about the team, the coach, the staff from Colorado Boulder,” Sanders told Fallon. “Oh my God, I don’t have a bad day. Like every day is a great day, I’m coaching my kids, darn it.”

As she prepares to release her upcoming self-help book next month, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau is revving up the publicity train.

Set to hit bookstores in April, Gregoire Trudeau, 48, is plotting two books focusing on her mental health journey. Part of the description of the book on her publisher’s website reads, “Sophie Gregoire Trudeau invites readers on a deeply personal journey toward self-knowledge, acceptance, and empowerment, drawing on the expertise of top psychologists, psychiatrists, scientists, and thought leaders.”

    Article content

The first book, Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other, follows her breakup with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last summer.

It was written before the two called it quits. But, of course, Gregoire Trudeau is facing questions about the dissolution of her marriage to the Liberal leader, whom she married in 2005 and shares three children with.

Gregoire Trudeau commemorated her recent Elle Canada cover story on social media. She followed up that post with a clip from her appearance at Forbes and Know Your Value’s 3rd annual 30/50 Summit. The mother-of-three spoke candidly about her struggles with an eating disorder and women resisting the expectation that they must learn to accept their needs not being met emotionally, mentally and physically as a part of life.

“Your needs, you shouldn’t expect the minimum,” the former journalist told the audience, using words which might have been an unintentional swipe at her ex. “You should expect a maximum of nourishment, presence and help in your life with the people around you. And we shouldn’t have to hold it all together as women … this is a lesson for life.”

Sharing her story “was not the easiest thing to do, but it was the right thing to do,” she continued. But she hinted that she has learned to frame a new outlook, away from her life as the spouse of a deeply unpopular politician.

“I sit in silence — I love silence — I go out and move in nature,” she said (per MSNBC). “I also like to dance in my kitchen and just love it. And I love human connection … I love good mischief. Who doesn’t? I think we need more playfulness in this world — and it doesn’t mean that we’re light and that there’s no substance — it’s quite the opposite. We should be very wary of … adults who can’t play anymore.”

In a new interview with Vogue, she elucidated on that sentiment when she described herself as “a wild horse in a stall.”

“Sometimes I just want to run in a field,” Gregoire Trudeau said.

Vogue’s interviewer, Mattie Kahn, added: “If she and her children are crammed in somewhere, one of her preferred modes of maternal embarrassment is to neigh as loud as she can.”

Close friends of Gregoire Trudeau echoed that characterization when they spoke about how she felt trapped by her husband’s political ascent.

“She was put in an impossible position,” one Canadian journalist said. “She was just stuck.”

“I have three children and a husband who is prime minister,” Gregoire Trudeau said in 2016. “I need help. I need a team to help me serve people.”

“It was like, ‘Really?’ ” Gregoire Trudeau tells the outlet of the public outrage following her comments.

“I always remind myself that it was an unofficial position to be in, so it was kind of like uncertain waters to navigate,” she elaborated in her conversation with Elle. “You do what you need to do; it’s one foot in front of the other. There was no defined role or responsibilities, so it was clear to me that I was going to continue on my path of (focusing on) mental health, eating disorders and self-esteem.”

As for the breakup, Gregoire Trudeau isn’t delving into too many details and is instead moving forward in her new reality as she co-parents with her estranged husband.

“Is it my fault? Is it his fault? There’s a lot of blaming, when what we’re all trying in our relationships and our connections is to heal ourselves or validate our emotions,” she told Vogue.

But in her conversation with Elle, Gregoire Trudeau said the split wasn’t nearly as bad as she thought it could be.

“I imagined the worst-case scenario, I’ll tell you that,” she told the magazine. “I had to. I didn’t want to be naive. But I also had to protect myself.”

Still, there’s one word she uses to describe their separation and their new reality going forward (Gregoire is rumoured to have “re-partnered” with a former beau).

“Hard,” she said. “(I had to) face the truth (and) choose authenticity over attachment. I’m a family woman — family is everything to me (because) I’m an only child, so the thought of breaking that mould or transforming that mould … Even the words we use to describe relationships — it’s either success (and you) stay together or failure (and you) go on different paths. We really need to develop a new vocabulary for human beings as we transform on our own paths.”

As the chatelaine of Longleat, her husband’s majestic family seat in Wiltshire, Strictly Come Dancing star Emma Weymouth is, very understandably, used to taking centre stage.

But next month it looks as if she’ll be eclipsed — at least for an hour or two — by a parade of similarly glamorous women, albeit a generation or two her senior.

All of them, I can reveal, will be ex-lovers of Emma’s late father-in-law, Alexander, the 7th Marquess of Bath, who died in 2020 aged 87, after enjoying a succession of so-called ‘wifelets’ — 75 of them in all — earning himself the soubriquet ‘the Loins of Longleat’.

‘His dear friends’ is how one of them, Bridget, an Australian fashion designer, describes the group, before explaining why she has co-ordinated the gathering, which, she says, will be held at Heaven’s Gate, a beauty spot on the 9,000-acre estate.

Alexander’s ashes were scattered there — not by his son, Ceawlin, or by his daughter, Lenka, but by the undertakers in lockdown.

‘We never had a chance to say goodbye,’ says Bridget. ‘But we are still here. We grieve. So we decided to do something about it.’

They plan to meet on April 4, alongside one or two of the marquess’s platonic friends.

‘We feel we need to be together, light candles, speak some readings of our love for Alexander,’ Bridget says.

    Ceawlin, 49, refrains from commenting.

But he has, of course, been there much longer than any of his father’s old friends — including Jamaican-born bombshell and one-time Bond girl Sylvana Henriques, who, as I disclosed last month, hopes to retrieve the portrait Alexander painted of her and which used to hang on a staircase alongside those of his other wifelets.

Alice and Reese on top table

Having won over pals such as Princess Beatrice with her themed dining sets, Alice Naylor-Leyland is proving popular in Hollywood, too.

The socialite, 37, launched her first pop-up shop of her ‘Mrs Alice’ tablescapes spring collection at the weekend in California, where she was joined by Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon.

In a picture she shared online of the pair together (above), she wrote: ‘No better welcome to Los Angeles than this ray of Sunshine.’

Alice’s husband, Tom Naylor Leyland, is heir to a baronetcy and the £176million Fitzwilliam land owning fortune. Alice has three children with Tom, whom she first met when she was 17.

She says: ‘I’m now a working mum seven days a week, and he accepts and supports that.

He might have been a man who is like, ‘I just want you making granola with the kids.’ Yet he doesn’t want that.’

    Kate: Say sorry to children

Talk about new-age parenting. Broadcaster-turned-child therapist Kate Silverton is urging parents to apologise to their children after telling them off.

The former BBC newsreader and mother of two says, ‘Let’s say you lost your rag and you shout. You can actually go to your children afterwards and genuinely say, ‘Sweetheart, I am so sorry. I got that wrong and didn’t speak to you as kindly as I should have done.’ It doesn’t matter what the incident was.’

Silverton, 53, who has a daughter, Clemency, 12, and a nine-year-old son, Wilbur, with her former Royal Marine husband Mike Heron, adds on the Happy Place podcast: ‘We’re modelling the behaviour we want to see.’

Hands up! Scarlett’s in the picture

Has some good finally come from the unnecessary furore over the Princess of Wales tampering with the picture of herself and her three children, which was published on Mother’s Day?

Well, writer Scarlett Curtis seems to think so — she no longer wants to Photoshop her hands in pictures.

‘I have freaky hands. Every time I post a picture on Instagram I get comments about my hands,’ says Scarlett, 28, daughter of Four Weddings And A Funeral film-maker Richard Curtis and broadcaster Emma Freud.

She adds: ‘I’ve Photoshopped my hands in pictures before. They look like a skeleton . . . But I’m done Photoshopping them.’

    Big steps for dancing duo

Strictly Come Dancing star Nadiya Bychkova was ‘disappointed’ not to be in one of last year’s couples on the BBC ballroom show.

Now, the dancer, 34, and her boyfriend, Strictly’s Kai Widdrington, 28, are branching out on their dance tour, Behind The Magic.

‘When you’re doing other things you can tell your story and pour everything you have in you out there,’ she tells me at the Ballet Icons Gala at the London Coliseum.

Potty-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay is famed for flying off the handle, but his protegee Anna Haugh prefers a calmer approach.

‘If, say, someone messes up, if someone is late, I give people the benefit of the doubt because that way you can get down to the truth. In hospitality, it’s all about looking for the goodness,’ she tells me at The London Murphia List. ‘Gordon might not articulate that way, but the man is a natural host, and a good host gives and then gets back.’

The old adage that sex sells has paid off for bonkbuster author Dame Jilly Cooper, 87, who has sold more than 11 million copies of her books in the UK alone.

Yet historian and author Lady Antonia Fraser, who has written 39 books, refuses to take a leaf out of Dame Jilly’s racy books.

‘She’s an institution and a great person, but I wouldn’t dare write about sex,’ she tells me at a party in London.

‘I write solemnly about historical figures and wouldn’t know where to start.’

PRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HM GOVERNMENT

HALF of us will face a diagnosis of cancer at some point in our lifetimes, statistics from Cancer Research UK reveal.

But by staying alert to changes in your body, you can help doctors to catch the disease early, when survival rates are higher.

While you might feel embarrassed to report symptoms or worry that you’re wasting your GP’s time, don’t – because speaking up could save your life.

    2

It might be nothing, but if something doesn’t feel right, it’s best to tell a doctor

The changes you’ve noticed may be nothing serious, but the doctor is best placed to decide whether you need tests to rule out cancer.

The disease can spread from one part of the body to another in a process known as metastasis, so the sooner it’s spotted, the better the chance of stopping it.

Plus, early diagnosis may sometimes mean that more aggressive forms of treatment such as chemotherapy are not needed.

NHS England’s national clinical director for cancer, Professor Peter Johnson, says: “Cancer symptoms and early warning signs can be very varied, with some being less obvious than others.

“But what’s important to know is what is normal for you, so you can spot any changes. If you have concerns or if something in your body doesn’t feel quite right, you should contact your GP practice.

“It could be nothing, but diagnosing cancer earlier could save your life.”

Breast, lung, prostate and bowel cancer are the four most common types, but the disease takes more than 200 forms.

“The symptoms can be quite common,” Professor Johnson explains, “such as breathlessness, night sweats or feeling tired when you’re not sure why – but if something doesn’t feel right for you, please contact your local GP practice.

    “Finding cancer earlier saves lives.”

‘I was having to change vests three times a night’

NIGHT sweats were the first sign that something wasn’t quite right for 45-year-old Ali Abdul Rofe.

The businessman from Redbridge, East London, also had less energy than normal and was having to nap at odd times of the day.

But he was busy with work, so it was all too easy to ignore the symptoms, which he put down to other factors.

“I assumed it was to do with weight gain and stress,” he recalls.

“I thought nothing of it and continued living as normal, as I was generally a healthy, fit person and hardly ever went to the GP.”

Over time, though, the night sweating got more extreme.

“I was having to change my vests two to three times a night,” he says.

By 2016, about a year after his symptoms began, the night sweats became unbearable.

Ali finally decided to make an appointment with his GP.

After blood tests, an x-ray and biopsy, doctors thought that it was tuberculosis.

But Ali did not get better after receiving medication and further investigations in 2017 revealed that he had stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma – a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, with white blood cells multiplying in an abnormal way.

“I’ve had various treatments over the years,” Ali says, “including a stem cell transplant treatment in February 2022 that was successful, and now I’m working back to recovery without medication.”

He wants to encourage others to seek medical help as early as possible if bodily changes cause them concern.

“I would like to request everyone who feels anything unusual in their health to go and see the GP,” Ali urges.

“It may not be anything serious, but it could be a sign of cancer, and finding it early makes it more treatable and could save your life.”

‘I thought I was just getting old’

IF IT hadn’t been for his wife, Shawleen, then John Hopkins, 64, might have shrugged off the symptoms of prostate cancer.

It was 2019 and the grandfather from Sheffield was getting up four or five times in the night to pee.

“I thought I was just getting old,” he says. “When our sex life changed – I struggled to ejaculate, and when I did, it was a funny colour – I didn’t connect the two.”

Thankfully, Shawleen worked as a phlebotomist, taking blood samples for a living, and knew he should get checked out by his GP, who referred him for numerous tests before a consultant confirmed the cancer diagnosis.

John says: “We discussed the different options: surgery to remove the prostate, two types of chemo and ultrasound, or just watch and wait.

“I knew immediately that I wanted surgery to get it out – I knew the possible side-effects included incontinence and erectile dysfunction.”

Luckily, doctors caught the disease before it spread to other parts of his body and it was removed by a surgical robot.

But he was one of the 3 per cent of unlucky patients left with ongoing incontinence after the operation.

John accepted that he’d have to live with it and was delighted to get the all-clear in March 2020.

Then in January last year he was fitted with an artificial urinary device, which he says has “transformed my life”.

“I have a control button in my scrotum and when I press it I can go for a wee,” John explains. “No more accidents.”

And he got a tattoo to symbolise his prostate cancer recovery, which has been a great conversation starter with other men.

“It allows me to say, ‘Notice what’s happening with your body and get checked,’” he says. “Not everyone’s lucky enough to have a Shawleen.”

    Spot the signs

IT MIGHT turn out to be nothing serious, but make an appointment with your GP if something in your body doesn’t feel right or if you experience any of the following symptoms:

    • Breathlessness
    • Frequent infections
    • Unexplained night sweats
    • Unexpected bruising or bleeding
    • Blood in your pee – even just once
    • Blood in your poo, which may look red or black
    • An unexplained lump
    • Unexplained weight loss

    FOR THREE WEEKS OR MORE:

    • Tummy trouble, such as discomfort or diarrhoea
    • Unexplained pain or discomfort
    • Feeling tired and unwell, and not sure why
    • Heartburn or indigestion
    • Unusual, pale or greasy poo
    • A cough

The NHS in England also runs three national screening programmes for cervical, breast and bowel cancer for people who don’t have symptoms.

If you are eligible make sure you take part when invited.

LONDON (AP) — Pattie Boyd was at the epicenter of the Swinging 60s, but not always the center of attention.

The model and photographer, who was often in the shadow of her rock icon husbands George Harrison and Eric Clapton, comes into sharp focus through a trove of letters, photos and other items she is selling at Christie’s auction house.

The collection, which went on public display at Christie’s London headquarters on Friday, provides a glimpse into the heart of the 1960s and 70s counterculture. The 111 lots up for sale include affectionate letters from both Harrison and Clapton, alongside clothing, jewelry, drawings and photographs — some of Boyd, and some by her.

If Boyd, 79, feels a pang at parting with them, she isn’t saying.

“I look back without emotion,” she told The Associated Press. “I can feel slightly sentimental, but not emotional.

“I’ve lived with all of these photographs and objets for so long — 40, 50 years,” she said. “I want other people to enjoy them.”

Boyd is famous as a musicians’ muse, inspiration for The Beatles’ song “Something,” composed for her by Harrison, as well as for Clapton’s scorching “Layla” and sweet “Wonderful Tonight.”

The auction includes love letters from Clapton, written while Boyd was married to Harrison, and the original cover artwork for Derek and The Dominos’ 1970 album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs,” a painting of a blond model who reminded Clapton of Boyd. The painting is estimated to sell for between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds ($51,000 and $76,000).

Harrison’s handwritten lyrics for the song “Mystical One” are on offer with an estimated price of 30,000 to 50,000 pounds ($38,000 to $63,000).

Boyd is an accomplished photographer, and the sale includes both large-scale portraits and informal Polaroids of Harrison, Clapton and other musicians, including Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend and Ronnie Wood.

“This is very much a snapshot of her life,” said Christie’s head of sale Adrian Hume-Sayer.

Hume-Sayer said the appetite for 1960s music memorabilia is growing, even as undiscovered material becomes scarcer year by year.

“This is quite unusual because it’s primary provenance,” he said. “A lot of the material out there is on the secondary market … but here you’ve got it coming directly from the person who was there. Pattie’s had this all of her life.

“It’s that visceral link with (a) moment that means so much to so many people that makes it so interesting.”

Taken as a whole, the collection feels both personal and revealing.

In one room is a psychedelic acid green and pink minidress worn by Boyd in the 1960s. In another stands an ornate grandfather clock that was a wedding present to Boyd and Harrison from Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1966.

There are handwritten letters from Harrison — “say hello to Hubby!” — and a handmade Christmas card he gave Boyd in 1968.

Letters and postcards from Clapton – in extremely elegant handwriting — provide shapshots from the rock star life. In one he says he’s off to the Caribbean island of Montserrat “to work on Sting’s album.” Another reveals: “Here I am in South America. Everybody’s got dodgy tummies.”

Harrison and Boyd divorced in 1977, and he died in 2001. In a 2007 memoir, Boyd described Harrison as her soulmate.

Her turbulent 10-year marriage to Clapton, which ended in 1989, was marred — as the musician later acknowledged — by his alcoholism.

Boyd says she feels no bitterness.

“That was almost like another lifetime ago,” she said. “And he has his own life and I have my own life. But this is just a bit of history that we shared.”

Mostly, she recalls the “great fun” of the 1960s, a seismic era whose creative influence rumbles across the decades.

“Sometimes I can be walking down a street somewhere in London, and I see a girl wearing what I would have worn in the 60s,” she said. “I mean, how many years ago was that? And it just makes me smile.”

The Pattie Boyd collection is on display at Christie’s until March 21. Online bidding closes March 22.
