    After a day (or so) of fevered speculation, Nissan and Honda have confirmed they are investigating whether the automakers should work together in the “fields of vehicle electrification and intelligence”.

    Both Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida and Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe fronted a press conference attended by Automotive News.

    The CEOs said the automakers are considering sharing electric motors, battery technology, software platforms, and other core electric vehicle (EV) components.

    Quite how far-reaching Nissan and Honda’s cooperation will go has yet to be determined, as the two companies have only just signed a memorandum of understanding to “begin a feasibility study of a strategic partnership” in order to “further accelerate efforts toward carbon neutrality and zero traffic-accident fatalities”.

    The heads of both Japan’s second largest automaker (Honda) and third largest (Nissan) agree a partnership between the two may be their best bet of staving off an existential threat.

    Race for catch up

    When asked about the industry’s rapid pace of change, Mibe-san said: “Can we survive? That’s the question. By 2030, we have to be a top runner, in a position to fight against the top players.”

    Uchida-san echoed these sentiments, stating: “We cannot afford to be complacent. Emerging players are making inroads with high competitiveness and totally different business models.”

    The potential partnership won’t be limited to Japan, but will be global in nature. Both need more EVs in Europe in order to meet the EU’s 2035 deadline for the phaseout of new petrol and diesel car sales.

    Chinese automakers, such as BYD, Geely and SAIC, have aggressively invested in electric cars, gaining market share and acceptance in both Europe and China.

    Nissan was an early pioneer in the EV field with the Leaf, which, prior to Tesla Model 3 taking off, was once the world’s most popular electric car. Now the Leaf is an also ran, and the only other EVs in its range are the Ariya crossover and Sakura kei car.

    With the recent axing of the retro-styled E hatchback, Honda’s electric offerings are currently limited to a clutch of models based on the HR-V — variously marketed as the e:NS1, e:NP1, e:Ny1 and e:N1 — and two cars — the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX — based on the GM’s Ultium architecture and built by the General.

    At this year’s CES, Honda unveiled a number of radically-styled concepts previewing its new 0 Series electric cars that will go on sale globally from 2026.

    No rebadging or share purchases, for now

    Although it’s early days for the Honda-Nissan relationship, both CEOs said product sharing, badge engineering, and capital cross-holdings won’t be part of discussions.

    They did, however, leave the door open to these items further down the road.

    Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has long dreamed about a partnership or merger between Honda and Nissan. Honda’s strong desire for independence, and Renault’s controlling stake in Nissan have kiboshed these hopes.

    Since the late 1990s, Nissan has been in a tight partnership with Renault, which rescued the Yokohama-based automaker when it was at death’s door. The two companies have jointly developed platforms and shared procurement, but these ties were loosened after the arrest of then-CEO Carlos Ghosn back in 2018.

    Renault and Nissan renegotiated their relationship in 2023, with Renault agreeing to sell down its stake in Nissan from 43 to 15 per cent, and limit its influence. While the two automakers agreed to work on specific projects together, it’s a much looser setup, with both companies free to pursue other partnerships.

    The French automaker has strengthened its ties with Geely, and Nissan was reportedly interested in rescuing Fisker.

    Meanwhile, Honda and GM have a long standing hydrogen fuel cell partnership. This helped to facilitate Honda using GM’s Ultium architecture for two North American EVs, as well as a plan to bring Cruise’s autonomous taxi tech to Japan by 2026.

    It’s unclear if the Cruise deal will go ahead given the division was forced to suspend on-road services after running over and dragging a pedestrian down a street. GM and Honda have also cancelled plans to jointly develop an affordable EV architecture.

    Cultural differences

    It will be interesting to see how the potential partnership pans out. The two companies have quite distinct cultures, with Nissan being seen as more confrontational, especially with its suppliers, while Honda has long fostered collaboration.

    Journalists asked about this, and Mibe-san responded: “Of course, it’s a different company so it has a different culture, but the assumption is that we can overcome these barriers. Even though there are different cultures, there are also commonalities.”

    Nissan’s electric vehicle charge may have stalled, but the maker is pushing ahead with fuel-sipping hybrid versions of its most popular SUVs.

    As Leaf sales dwindle and red tape threatens to derail the launch of its Ariya electric SUV, the Japanese brand has launched a hybrid version of the Qashqai, dubbed the e-power.

    The small SUV will go head-to-head with the Toyota Corolla Cross and Hyundai Kona hybrids.

    Unlike its two fiercest rivals Nissan isn’t offering its e-power tech across the range. Instead it has opted to sell just one fully-loaded – and front-wheel drive only – Ti model.

    Prices start at about $56,000 drive-away for the Qashqai Ti e-power, $4200 more than the petrol-only equivalent and more expensive than the larger all-wheel-drive X-Trail e-power ST-L.

    The new hybrid is about $4500 more than the equivalent Toyota and $7000 more than the Hyundai.

    Nissan does its hybrids very differently. As with rival machines, the Qashqai e-power has a petrol engine, electric motor and a small lithium-ion battery. But from there things take a turn. At no point does the petrol engine drive the wheels. Instead it serves as a generator to replenish the 2.1kWh battery, which in turn powers the electric motor that drives the wheels.

    Hybrids from other makers use the petrol engine to drive the wheels most of the time, with the electric motor chipping in to assist at takeoff and for periods of cruising.

    Nissan’s approach is the more rewarding for drivers. It delivers the instant torque and zippy acceleration of an EV around town. But it’s not as efficient as competitors.

    Nissan claims the Qashqai e-power drinks 5.2L/100km, compared with the Corolla Cross’s 4.3L/100km and the Hyundai’s 3.9L/100km. The Nissan also requires pricier premium unleaded petrol.

    The Qashqai e-power is a good thing to drive, though.

    A high seating position gives drivers an excellent view of the road ahead and there is plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel to accommodate all shapes and sizes.

    It’s peppy around town and has enough grunt to overtake at speed with ease.

    Firmish suspension doesn’t cushion passengers from bumps and road imperfections as well as rivals, though.

    It does, however, corner better than most small SUVs. Well-weighted and direct steering gives the driver confidence when tackling a tight and twisting country road.

    The Qashqai is serene around town but the tyres can get noisy on poorer quality, rougher roads.

    We managed to match Nissan’s fuel use claim after an extensive drive on mostly high-speed country roads.

    It’s a well put together machine that feels more premium than most.

    Soft, leather-accented materials cover all touch points and wood veneer-like highlights add a touch of class.

    The quilted, leather-accented seats are heated, massaging and power adjustable in the front row.

    The cabin strikes a good balance between rear legroom and boot space and its rear doors open wide to make loading kids easier.

    It misses out on a spare, though, and makes do with a fiddly tyre repair kit.

    There is LED lighting front and back, 19-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.

    A 12.3-inch infotainment screen is paired with a digital driver’s display of the same size and a head-up display projects vital information such as travelling speed and safety warnings onto the windscreen in front of the driver.

    Other goodies include a 10-speaker Bose stereo, wireless device charger, in-built satnav, heated faux-leather steering wheel and plenty of active safety and driver aids.

    Nissan covers the Qashqai with a five-year/unlimited km warranty. A capped price servicing program costs a reasonable $2007 if you pre-pay at purchase time, although intervals are short at 12 months/10,000km.

    VERDICT 3/5

    A classy offering inside and out but it’s expensive and not as efficient as rivals.

    Nissan Motor Company and Nissan Financial Services in Australia and New Zealand have started contacting affected individuals who had their personal information leaked as part of a cyber attack that occurred late last year.

    The Japanese carmaker currently expects to notify around 100,000 individuals about the cyber attack over the coming weeks, though it’s expecting this number to reduce as contact details are verified and duplicate names are removed from the list.

    Affected individuals that have been affected by this cyber attack include “some” Nissan customers, dealers, as well as “some” current and former employees.

    Other affected individuals include customers of Nissan Financial Services’ Mitsubishi, Renault, Skyline, Infiniti, LDV and RAMS-branded finance businesses.

    Nissan claims the type of information that was leaked is “different for each person”. It currently estimates 10 per cent of individuals have had some form of government identification compromised.

    The data set includes approximately 220 passports, 4000 Medicare cards, 7500 driver’s licences, and 1300 tax file numbers.

    Nissan claims the remaining 90 per cent of individuals affected in this cyber attack have had some other form of personal information impacted. This could include copies of loan-related transactions for loan accounts, employment or salary information, or general information such as dates of birth.

    This particular cyber attack occurred on December 5, 2023, and was claimed to be carried out by a malicious third party that obtained unauthorised access to Nissan’s IT servers in Australia and New Zealand.

    Nissan Australia claims it took “immediate action” to contain the breach and alerted relevant government authorities, including the Australian and New Zealand national cyber security centres and privacy regulators.

    The company has since restored its systems and is continuing to work with its global incident response team and relevant authorities to investigate the extent of the cyber attack.

    Following this breach Nissan Australia and New Zealand has put a number of services in place to support individuals who have had their personal information comprised.

    These services include IDCARE, free credit monitoring, and reimbursement where the replacement of government ID is recommended by the relevant issuing authority.

    Nissan also has a dedicated customer support phone line that can be contacted between 7AM and 7PM AEDT on weekdays. In Australia the phone number is 1800 958 000, and in New Zealand the phone number is 0800 44 50 14.

    • Be vigilant for any unusual or suspicious online activity
    • Avoid clicking on any links or opening any suspicious emails or attachments
    • Be vigilant for any unrecognised or unsolicited telephone calls, emails or messages asking you to provide personal information
    • Always verify the sender of any communications received to make sure they’re legitimate
    • Update your passwords regularly, using ‘strong’ passwords and not re-using passwords for multiple accounts
    • Enable multi-factor authentication for your online accounts where available
    • Report a scam in Australia by visiting Scamwatch at www.scamwatch.gov.au

    The Nissan Ariya is officially coming to Australia, but the brand’s local division still can’t say when we might see the Tesla Model Y-fighter Down Under.

    Speaking with media at the launch of the Qashqai e-Power hybrid, general manager for corporate communications Emily Fadeyev said that while the all-electric Ariya SUV has been confirmed for an Australian launch at some point, the company is still unable to say when.

    “Ariya will come, but we don’t have updated timing,” Ms Fadeyev said.

    Nissan executives indicated in June last year that the Ariya would eventually make the trip Down Under, which shifted the dial from “we want it” to “we’re getting it”.

    Back in December 2022, managing director for Nissan Australia and Oceania Adam Paterson told CarExpert the brand is well aware of the Australian market’s appetite for vehicles like the Ariya, and that part of the delayed rollout has been global demand.

    “Timing itself is difficult for a couple of reasons; first we know the Ariya will do very well in the Australian market when it does arrive and when we can get it here,” Mr Paterson said.

    “You may have seen that Nissan took pre-orders or reservations in some markets globally, and then had to turn them off because demand was so strong, and the decision was made in those markets that they didn’t want to disappoint customers if delivery times were too long.

    “The company has had to prioritise specific markets based on the regulatory requirements of those markets. As some markets are moving with CO2 strategies a lot more rapidly than we are here, that’s where the decision has been made as far as sending it.

    “But literally the challenges of the regulatory environment is so rapidly evolving globally, that some markets may go from no requirement to a requirement of 1000, 2000, 5000 or 10,000 [units]; whatever that may require… and we’ve had to continue to shift production availabilities based on that.

    “So to be able to say that it is absolutely available on this date is tough because, again, global requirements in other markets are evolving,” Mr Paterson added.

    The Nissan Ariya was revealed in production-ready guise in July 2020, meaning the car will be three or four years old by the time it hits Australian roads – though it only started hitting global markets earlier in 2022.

    Despite being a pioneer of electric vehicles (EVs) with its Leaf hatchback, the Japanese brand’s Australian arm has been unable to secure a local allocation and launch date.

    Globally, the Ariya is available with single-motor FWD and dual-motor e-4ORCE AWD drivetrains, as well as a choice of two battery pack options; with respective usable capacities of 63kWh and 87kWh. Earlier this year Nissan also revealed a powered-up Ariya Nismo at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon – which you can read more about here.

    Motor outputs for FWD models with the smaller-capacity battery are 160kW and 300Nm, while the larger-capacity battery Ariya’s single motor develops 178kW/300Nm. The twin-motor AWD system features a combined output of 250kW/560Nm (65kWh) or 290kW/600Nm (90kWh), with the latter offering a claimed 5.1-second 0-100km/h time.

    In the UK, the entry-level Ariya 63kWh (usable) is priced a smidgen under the starting price of the most expensive X-Trail e-Power e-4ORCE – in Australia, the X-Trail Ti-L e-Power with e-4ORCE is priced from $58,490 plus on-road costs.

    At the upper end of the range, the high-spec Ariya e-4ORCE 87kWh Evolve specification is priced in the same realm as an entry-level Volkswagen Touareg, which started at just under $90,000 plus on-roads before the pre-facelift model went into runout.

    Nissan’s pioneering Leaf hatchback remains the Japanese brand’s only EV offering in Australia, and is now nearing the end of its product lifecycle having first gone into production globally in 2017, recently receiving a major facelift.

    It’s priced from $50,990 plus on-road costs for the standard version, and $61,490 before on-roads for the long-range e+ variant.

    Nissan sold just 484 examples of the Leaf in Australia in 2023, well behind the likes of the Tesla Model 3 (17,347 units) and even the BYD Dolphin (925 units) – and that’s not even taking into account more popular SUV-bodied electric vehicles.

    A replacement for the ageing Leaf is reportedly on the horizon, with production of the current model reportedly winding down at the end of March in Sunderland, UK, to make way for a new range of all-electric models – read more here.

    The latest Nissan to receive the Nismo treatment is expected to be the all-electric Ariya.

    It’s set to be revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12, however leaked slides from Nissan’s presentation were posted online by Mag X.

    A prototype suspected to be the Ariya Nismo was spied in November 2023, which combined with the presentation leak points to the Ariya Nismo entering production.

    Nissan published a silhouette of the upcoming Nismo model on YouTube which matches that of the Ariya.

    The slides on the presentation confirm the Ariya Nismo will receive upgraded suspension including retuned springs, and dampers and a stronger front stabiliser bar, and brake pads which Nissan claim will provide a “solid and high-quality brake feel” and improved chassis control.

    Other changes include unique tunes to the vehicle dynamics control, traction control, and ABS.

    Nissan has made upgrades to the Ariya’s dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain, though these have yet to be revealed.

    However, based on the leaked imagery, Nissan claims the Ariya Nismo will be one second faster in a 0-120km/h sprint than the standard Ariya.

    Currently, the most powerful Nissan Ariya has a dual-motor powertrain with 290kW of power and 599Nm of torque.

    Mag X reports the Ariya Nismo will be offered with both 63kWh and 87kWh battery options.

    The Ariya Nismo will reportedly be five per cent lighter than the standard Ariya.

    It will reportedly receive an aggressive front bumper with a new front splitter, exaggerated side skirts to increase downforce, red stripe exterior accents, a sporty rear lip spoiler, and a new rear bumper.

    According to Mag X, Nismo will use “exclusively developed” Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres wrapped around 20-inch Enkei aluminium wheels with a five-spoke design.

    Inside, Mag X reports the Ariya will receive a unique steering wheel with red accents, bucket seats, a black headliner, and red footwell lighting.

    In addition, the instrument cluster is reportedly lined in metallic red trim, while a black open-pore wood finish is understood is expected on the dashboard as well as a red start button.

    The bucket seats are expected to be covered in a suede-like upholstery with red perforations.

    There will reportedly be six colour options to choose from. There are single-tone options including Prism White, Dark Metal Grey, and Midnight Black. The two-tone options all feature a Midnight Black roof but feature Prism White, Deep Ocean Blue or Stealth Grey body colours.

    The standard Nissan Ariya is yet to make its way to Australian shores, with timing of the EV still up in the air.

    According to Mag X, the Ariya has been delayed for various overseas markets.

    WASHINGTON – Many electric vehicles (EVs) lost eligibility for tax credits of up to US$7,500 (S$9,905) after new battery sourcing rules took effect on Jan 1, including the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive, some Tesla Model 3s and Chevrolet Blazer EV, the US Treasury said.

    The Treasury issued guidelines in December detailing new battery sourcing requirements aimed at weaning the US EV supply chain away from China. They took effect on Jan 1.

    The number of EV models qualifying for US EV tax credits fell from 43 to 19. Those figures include different versions of the same vehicle type. Treasury said some manufacturers have yet to submit information on eligible vehicles, which could lead to changes in the list.

    Tesla did not immediately comment on Jan 1 but said on its website “Cybertruck is likely to qualify for the federal tax credit later in 2024.”

    The new rules allow buyers to claim the tax credit of up to US$7,500 at a participating dealership at the point of sale. The tax credit sets limits on vehicle price and buyer income to qualify.

    The Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive, BMW X5 xDrive50e, Audi Q5 PHEV 55, Cadillac Lyriq and Ford E-Transit are among the vehicles that fell off the list of vehicles eligible for tax credits.

    Volkswagen (VW) said on Jan 1 it “is in the process of confirming eligibility for a federal EV tax credit for vehicles” after Jan 1.

    “We are optimistic that MY2023 ID.4s and all MY2024 ID.4s will be eligible under the new rules,” VW added.

    BMW did not immediately comment.

    Nissan said it is working with suppliers in an effort to meet changing requirements “and regain tax credit eligibility for the Nissan Leaf in the future”.

    The Treasury said: “Automakers are adjusting their supply chains to ensure buyers continue to be eligible for the new clean vehicle credit, partnering with allies and bringing jobs and investment back to the United States”.

    Ford Motor said last month its E-Transit would lose the US$3,750 tax credit, as would the Mach-E and Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring plug-in hybrid, but its F-150 EV Lighting and the Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring retained credits.

    General Motors (GM) noted all of its EVs would temporarily lose eligibility except the Chevrolet Bolt, adding the Lyriq and Blazer EVs are losing the credit because of two minor components.

    GM expects after a sourcing change the Lyriq and Blazer EV will regain eligibility in early 2024 and said its Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV and Cadillac OPTIQ produced “after the sourcing change will be eligible for the full incentive”.

    The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act law reformed the EV tax credit, requiring vehicles to be assembled in North America to qualify for any tax credits, eliminating nearly 70 per cent of eligible models at the time.

    Tesla disclosed in December that its Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range vehicles would lose federal tax credits starting Jan 1. The Model 3 Performance retains the US$7,500 credit. REUTERS

    The company has released a single, shadowy teaser of the X-Trail Crawler concept, but we can make out big wheels, jacked-up suspension, and a roof box with a strip of driving lights.

    “The exterior represents a world of rock-crawling, running through steep and rough terrain, and the luggage area contains the tools that have always been looked for in the X-Trail,” the company says.

    We’ll have to wait until January 12-14 to learn more about the concept.

    It won’t be the only X-Trail concept there, with an Autech Sports Spec version of the mid-sized SUV also debuting.

    Established by Nissan in 1986 and merged with Nismo in 2022, Autech gives Nissans a subtler look than those wearing Nismo badging.

    Changes certainly aren’t as extensive as with the Crawler concept, though the Autech Sports Spec Concept wears a set of polished multi-spoke alloy wheels.

    Nissan’s Serena people mover has also received the Autech treatment, while its Caravan van has gone in an entirely different direction.

    The Caravan-based Disaster Support Mobile-Hub is, as the name suggests, designed to roll into disaster areas. To that end, it’s equipped with multiple sets of Nissan’s Portable Battery from Leaf, which are made from old batteries once used in the brand’s electric hatchback.

    Other concepts include the Roox Beams Customized Concept, a kei car developed in collaboration with fashion brand Beams and wearing denim trim both inside and out.

    The March Customized Concept takes the now discontinued March (formerly sold here as the Micra) and gives it a makeover, which Nissan says “explores a new way of cherishing used cars”.

    This concept has been “tailored to a pastry chef, as an example of young people who have found their vocation”, and features extensive use of woodgrain accents and green upholstery.

    Nissan will also use the event to show off its e-4ORCE 04 Formula E racecar, which will take on the Tokyo round of the Formula E Championship in March 2024, as well as its Nismo-fettled Skyline, Z and GT-R.

    BEIJING — Nissan Motor Co. is expanding its research ties with a leading Chinese university as it and other foreign car companies try to claw back market share in the important Chinese market.

    The Japanese automaker announced Sunday that it would launch joint research next year with Tsinghua University on reaching Generation Z – defined for this project as those born between 1995 and 2009 – and on the social responsibility of automakers in battery recycling, charging stations and other electric vehicle-related issues.

    The major auto companies were caught flat-footed by a boom in electric vehicles in China that has given rise to new Chinese competitors that have gobbled up market share at home and are now moving into Southeast Asia, Europe and other overseas markets. Nissan’s sales in China plunged 34% in the six months from April to September compared with a year earlier.



    “Market conditions in China have become extremely tough,” Masashi Matsuyama, the head of Nissan‘s Chinese investment company, said at a news conference in Beijing.

    Nissan plans to develop 10 further new-energy vehicles for the Chinese market, four under its own brand by 2026 and the other six for Chinese joint venture partners. The company is aiming to launch the first Nissan-branded model in the second half of next year.

    The automaker is also stepping up its electric vehicle offerings in other markets. Nissan, which has an alliance with French automaker Renault SA, announced last month that it would retool a factory in Great Britain to make electric versions of its two best-selling vehicles.

    China’s electric vehicles have become a trade issue for the European Union, which has launched an investigation into Chinese government subsidies to determine whether they have given China-based manufacturers an unfair competitive advantage.

    Nissan and Tsinghua University have been research partners for several years. They established a joint center in 2016 to study electric vehicles and autonomous driving for the Chinese market.

    The next-generation Nissan Patrol is getting closer to its reveal, and will drop its big V8 for a smaller twin-turbo six.

    These renders show what we expect the next-generation Nissan Patrol will look like.

    Camouflaged prototypes of the Patrol and Armada, as it’s known in markets like North America, have been making the rounds in recent months as Nissan tests its next-generation flagship SUV in the US and the Middle East.

    While sales of the current vehicle are stronger than ever and a locally tuned Warrior has joined the line-up, the Patrol is at the end of its (very long) lifecycle. The current Y62-series Patrol entered production in 2010, and launched here in 2013.

    So, what do we know about the next-generation model?

    Launch timing

    The next-generation SUV was, according to Automotive News, shown to North American dealers in August, and will reportedly go on sale in the US in mid-2024.

    It’s unclear how much later it will arrive in Australia.

    Design

    Camouflaged prototypes show the next Patrol will have an evolution of the current model’s design language, with sharper lines.

    One dealer told Automotive News the Patrol has a “Range Rover-like” appearance and is both bigger and more rugged-looking.

    Inside, it reportedly has large screens, upgraded finishes, and the “latest” driver-assist and convenience technology. Expect the current model’s 1990s-esque woodgrain and gathered leather trim to disappear.

    As before, an even more luxe version of the Patrol will be offered as the Infiniti QX80 – which has already been previewed by the QX Monograph concept.

    The Infiniti will continue to feature different interior styling plus unique front and rear ends, but is expected to continue to share its body. The concept, therefore, gives us a good indication of what the new Patrol will look like.

    Don’t expect to get a new QX80 in Australia, though. With Infiniti’s withdrawal from our market in 2020, the new QX80 is off-limits to Australians.

    Performance

    The Y62-series went without a diesel, something buyers in the North American and Middle Eastern markets don’t demand quite as fervently as Australians.

    The next-generation model is also expected to be petrol-only, but will drop the current naturally aspirated 5.6-litre V8 for a twin-turbo V6. Rivals like the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and Sequoia, Ford Expedition and Jeep Wagoneer have already dropped their V8s.

    Speaking to media at the Tokyo motor show, Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s senior vice president of global product strategy and product planning, said customers will appreciate the new Patrol‘s drivetrain and won’t miss the V8.

    “I’m also of that generation… I used to like the V8 and I still do,” he said in reference to the current car.

    “But the V6 twin-turbo… you will not lament the V8.”

    Based on previous reports out of the USA, the twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine is expected to make around 314kW of power – for reference, the current V8 model has 298kW and 560Nm. Expect an improvement in fuel economy as well.

    “Overall performance driving dynamics, you will see also big, big improvement. And that dynamic performance is very well executed on-road, driving high speed, response, the chassis dynamics, the steering speed has also been greatly improved,” Mr Espinosa said.

    Technology

    Mr Espinosa conceded the current Patrol “[doesn’t] have the best infotainment system” and signalled a “big, big key change to technology” is coming with the new model.

    Right-hand drive Patrols are even worse off at present, as they’re saddled with an older interior featuring a smaller 8.0-inch screen lacking even wired Android Auto or Apple CarPlay; left-hand drive Armadas, in contrast, have a 12.3-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay.

    Expect a screen this size or larger in all next-generation Patrol/Armada SUVs, regardless of what side the steering wheel is on. And yes, we expect the Patrol to finally get smartphone mirroring locally.

    Price

    The current Patrol handily undercuts a comparable LandCruiser 300 Series, but this gulf could narrow with the next-generation model.

    Looking beyond the LandCruiser, it appears that Nissan is pushing the Patrol and its luxury sibling, the Infiniti QX80, further upmarket.

    Nissan already foregoes an equivalent to the fleet-spec LandCruiser GX in Australia, with the local Patrol range opening at $84,900 before on-roads for the Ti, which lines up more closely with a mid-spec 300 Series GXL that retails for $106,101 before on-roads.

    With the next generation, we could see the base price climb closer to – or perhaps even past – the $100,000 barrier.

    So, what do you do if you want to get a new, full-sized SUV? Perhaps you go to a Nissan showroom and look at the LandCruiser’s arch rival, the V8-powered Patrol.

    Wait times are shorter, but our data shows that on average you’re still looking at a 3-6 month wait to take delivery of a new Patrol.

    What are some alternatives if you want something sooner, or if you’ve decided a LandCruiser or Patrol simply isn’t your cup of tea?

    Right then (in a very sturdy Yorkshire accent), I’m going to go quite bonkers as some go you might think, and suggest the far more comfortable Range Rover Sport.

    Some might think in jest, but believe you me, I’ve driven across flowing rivers (The Tweed on the Scottish Border Lands), and up almost-vertical river banks made entirely of mud in the previous Sport with complete and utter confidence. It’s astonishing just how capable this luxury SUV is – and it does it all so effortlessly. That’s what blows you away more than its off-road abilities.

    Moreover, the Sport can tow up to 3500kg, with 350kg max tow-ball weight.

    I’d also look at the top-spec Ineos Fieldmaster ($109,525). It looks tough, can pretty much go anywhere and is a lot less expensive considering its off-road focus and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel donk.

    The Toyota LandCruiser 300 is immensely capable, but it’s a bit… boring.

    That’s not an accusation you could ever level at the Land Rover Defender. It’s excellent to look at, has a thoroughly modern interior, and is brilliant to drive on or off the road.

    As we discovered during our 4WD Mega Test earlier this year, it’s also able to do pretty much everything well. It excelled in our towing test, was a weapon off road, and proved surprisingly fast in a straight line during our drag race.

    Although the supercharged V8 is tempting, realistically the diesel inline-six is all the car you’d ever need.

    The LandCruiser 300 is an icon and worthy of endless praise, but there are some great alternatives out there for similar or less money depending on the variant you choose.

    Given the 300 Series is as much focused on comfort and luxury as it is on go-anywhere 4×4 ability, the Land Rover Discovery is my pick.

    Like the LandCruiser, the Discovery name is synonymous with adventurous capability and luxurious comfort. Furthermore, the Disco has long offered better seating for seven than the 300 Series (or its predecessors) could dream of.

    It’s easier to drive in town, offers better performance and efficiency, can tow 3.5 tonnes, and offers a heap of Land Rover’s well-honed 4×4 tech and features to get you where you want to go.

    Perceived reliability niggles aside, the Discovery 5 is a left-field choice that arguably deserves to do better in 2023-24.

    Jack Quick: Lexus LX

    Depending on which version of the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series you’re looking at and if you’re not willing to wait for one, I’d argue your next best port of call should be the Lexus LX.

    The Lexus is essentially a revised version of the LandCruiser 300 which is wrapped up in a more luxurious package inside and out.

    Sure the entry-level Lexus LX 500d currently starts at just a bit over $150,000 before on-road costs, but this is a hop skip and a jump from the flagship LandCruiser Sahara ZX which currently starts at $143,101 before on-roads.

    Despite the luxe looks, the LX is offered with the same 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel as the LandCruiser 300 Series which produces a healthy 227kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

    A 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with 305kW and 650Nm is also available if diesel isn’t your shtick.

    There’s no denying the Lexus LX’s capability because it has up to seven seats and has a 3500kg braked towing capacity.

    William Stopford: Land Rover Discovery

    My first thought was a Ford Everest, as like the LandCruiser 300 Series it packs a turbo-diesel V6, 3500kg braked towing capacity, and a good level of off-road ability. It’s cheaper, too, though it has less power and torque and a less appealing interior.

    But, alas, the Everest is also experiencing a six-month wait according to our data.

    If you’re after a LandCruiser, you’re probably after something with some off-road ability and some towing ability. That rules out most crossovers, while the four-cylinder body-on-frame SUVs a segment below the LandCruiser just don’t seem special enough.

    I have a soft spot for the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, which can be had with low-range gearing and air suspension, but that’s a car in serious need of a price correction. While you’re at it, Jeep, how about a more powerful engine and better towing capacity?

    So, what does that leave you with?

    It’s no secret Land Rover doesn’t have quite the same vaunted reputation for reliability as Toyota, but its vehicles typically offer an impressive combination of competent on-road dynamics, off-road capability, and some lovely powertrains.

    The Discovery and Defender 130 are both a bit goofy-looking in different ways, but offer greater third-row comfort than a LandCruiser. JLR’s ridiculously long option lists also mean you can customise them both to your heart’s content, including specifying equipment to improve their off-road ability. Both can also be had with a lovely turbo-diesel inline-six.

    In the end, I’ll give the nod to the underdog Discovery as it’s a little bit more my style.

    Jade Credentino: Lexus LX

    The Lexus LX shares much with the LandCruiser including its turbo-diesel V6 and 3500kg braked towing capacity and, although it’s more expensive, there are more luxury features inside and out.

    My pick would be the diesel-powered LX 500d.
