Fitness influencer Kayla Itsines has revealed why she hid her ongoing health battle from her followers for six years.

Australian entrepreneur — with more than 16 million Instagram followers — suffers from endometriosis, a disease where the tissue similar to that which lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus, causing chronic pain and sometimes fertility issues.

“I was really self-conscious about it and I actually didn’t talk about it at all,” the popular Sweat fitness app co-creator said speaking with news.com.au

She believed if she didn’t end up having a baby because of her condition, it would “freak out an audience of millions and millions of women all around the world”.

“So I kind of wanted to prove to them, which is silly now because I had no one to talk to, but I wanted to prove to them that you could have kids and have endo.”

The 32-year-old fitness influencer — who has had two children, four-year-old Arna and one-year-old Jax — found it “traumatic” when she was told having children would be “very difficult” with her condition.

“I was 18 and the doctor told me to ‘be prepared because people with endometriosis can’t have kids’,” she said.

“It was so weird the way he said it, so very black and white, and I remember walking out into the room where my mum was waiting and I started crying.

“Being told that I might not be able to get pregnant at such a young age terrified me.”

Itsines had more answers after undergoing a keyhole surgery that revealed she also had adenomyosis where endometrial tissue grows into the muscular wall of the uterus.

In 2015 during the peak of her popular fitness empire, Itsines decided to share her struggles with the debilitating disease.

Itsines said the response she got was negative, with comments rolling in speculating about her fertility, so the fitness guru vowed to never talk about her health struggles publicly again.

SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Team principal Christian Horner was with Red Bull as Formula 1 preseason testing began Wednesday even as he faces an ongoing investigation by the team’s parent company into an alleged claim of misconduct.

Horner was alongside the team’s chief technology officer, car designer Adrian Newey, as Max Verstappen drove the team’s new car at the start of Wednesday’s morning session. It is the start of the Dutch driver’s campaign for a fourth consecutive world title.

The Red Bull parent company said Feb. 5 it was investigating allegations of misconduct toward a team employee. Horner denies any wrongdoing and has continued in his role as team principal during the investigation.

On the track, Red Bull still had the fastest car in Wednesday’s first session. Max Verstappen set the pace with a time that was 0.699 seconds faster than Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, and also overtook his rival on track near the end of the session.

“I think lap times at the moment don’t mean anything,” Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez said. “The most important is to get through our program and try to to make sure we have a good three days of testing because it’s basically all what we’re going to get through the season.”

While most teams designed cars broadly similar to the 2023 Red Bull which won all but one race, Red Bull has changed its approach. Its new car has slim sidepods with vertical air intakes. It resembles an approach Mercedes tried previously with little success, but Verstappen’s times indicated Red Bull has found a way to make it work.

Williams was the only team with obvious reliability issues as Alex Albon’s car stopped on the track with a technical fault.

There are three days of preseason testing from Wednesday through Friday ahead of the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix at the same venue next week.

Each day is split into two sessions, and teams can only have one driver on track in each. That meant Lewis Hamilton, who is leaving Mercedes at the end of the year to join Ferrari, was sitting out the first day as his teammate George Russell drove.

McLaren driver Lando Norris said he would wear a helmet with the design used by 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran, who died in December. De Ferran was McLaren’s sporting director when Norris first raced in F1 in 2019 and had more recently been an adviser to the team.

“We lost someone really special to us at the end of last year, he was a dear friend of mine and he’d been with me pretty much since I came into Formula 1. Someone who I not only had many laughs and great times with, but someone who helped me out on and off the track whenever I needed it,” Norris posted on social media. “This is the design he won the Indy 500 with, and I’ll be wearing it today as my little way to say thank you for everything and to let him know we’re thinking of him and he’s still very much part of McLaren. I hope you like it. This one is for you Gil.”

Americans are choosing to remain in a living situation with their exes amidst the ongoing housing crisis, a move that experts say may prove emotionally taxing despite the potential financial benefits.

“High housing costs are causing more couples to cohabitate despite the fact the romantic flames of their marriage have been extinguished,” real estate broker Chuck Vander Stelt told Fox News Digital.

“I have had conversations with several divorcing couples who have been weighing options and looking to time the market. In the meantime, they are continuing to live together.”

Stelt believes the trend of cohabitation after divorce or breakups is growing as he has experienced an influx of those in their 30s and 40s, often with children, weighing the options of selling versus cohabitating. In the past, Stelt said homeowners who separated were adamant that the property should be sold as soon as possible.

“Many homeowners are sitting on a mortgage with a rock bottom interest rate and a comfortable house payment. It’s hard to let that go and face the alternative of meaningfully higher housing costs,” he added.

The inclination to remain shacked up with former lovers has been reported in the media over the last several years, especially amid the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Relationship advice websites and message boards, such as Reddit, are filled with pagers where renters and homeowners have asked whether they should remain in their current living situation.

Americans have even documented their experiences living with exes on TikTok, offering advice to those facing a similar conundrum.

TikToker @-diaryofamomma posted a variety of videos in late 2023 where she showed what life is like when you live with an ex and you share two children. The son and daughter typically stay with the mother in one room while the dad sleeps on the couch.

The mom, “Cassie,” said they still live together because the landlord would not allow them to break the lease without paying for the rest of the term in full. They both share responsibility for the kids and clean the house.

“Honestly, me and their dad like – think of a bad roommate. Somebody you don’t like but you have to live with because you have a lease together. Like, that’s what we are,” Cassie said. “I try not to bother him. He doesn’t bother me.”

Dating coach Deon Black said the reasons people choose to live with their exes often boil down to the three F’s: finances, familiarity, and fear.

“The cost of moving out can be prohibitive, especially considering current real estate prices. And let’s not forget the contractual obligations that sometimes bind people together like super glue — rental contracts signed in happier times that now seem as unbreakable as a bad habit,” he said.

Black said while not an earth-shattering trend, exes living together is indeed a growing phenomenon created out of necessity, more so than choice.

“Millennials are leading this charge, followed closely by Gen Z. Younger generations are most affected by this trend due to economic pressures,” he said.

Amid rising interest rates and housing shortages, Black said Americans are trying to save money and maintain stability, especially if kids are involved. But the possible downside is substantial, with the dating coach citing the potential for emotional stress, conflict and the difficulty of moving on.

After living with her ex, TikToker Alana Hogan offered tips to those embroiled in the same living situation.

“Everyone is going to heal in different ways and everyone has different coping strategies. Your way is going to be entirely different to his or her way,” she said.

She urged her followers not to view their former partner’s actions as a reflection of themselves and to set healthy boundaries of where each person will be in the apartment or house.

“Be really clear and open with your communication. Let them know what you feel comfortable with, what you don’t feel comfortable with. What you feel open about talking about and what you don’t,” she added.

Viral relationship coach Jake Maddock previously addressed the idea of living with an ex, stressing that deciding to stay under the same roof means you are still technically in a relationship.

“You can’t emotionally separate and not physically separate. You have to separate physically as well,” he said.

Sexologist Suzannah Weiss concurred with the idea that it is usually easier for people to have a “clean break” and keep exes out of their lives following a breakup.

Weiss noted that some people might agree to live with their exes temporarily because they are busy with work, allowing this period to drag on without a determined expiration date. Others live in rent-controlled apartments and cannot find something affordable when they cut things off, leading to decisions “born out of convenience.”

“However, sometimes, people keep living with their exes because they are afraid to fully let go. They may tell themselves it’s for convenience or for financial reasons, but the truth is that they are terrified to be completely without this person,” she told Fox News Digital.

Israel’s Supreme Court struck down the first, and most moderate, of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial reforms on Monday in a close 8-7 decision that risked dividing the country again in the midst of an existential war against Hamas terrorists.

The opposition and far left, including the U.S. State Department-funded Movement for Government Quality, celebrated the ruling and warned Netanyahu not to resist it. Netanyahu and his governing coalition said they would delay reacting until after the war.

Israel’s judiciary is the most powerful in the democratic world, and is virtually unchecked. Netanyahu and his government won an election in 2022 with a large majority, partly on the basis of a promise to reform the judiciary. Most of the proposed reforms were parallel to existing practices in other democracies. The left, relegated to the minority, took to the streets and organized massive protests that observers likened to a “color revolution,” aimed at ousting Netanyahu or at least making him completely ineffective.

The government delayed passage of the reforms to allow time for negotiation with the opposition. When talks failed, Netanyahu tried to pass the reforms piecemeal, starting with the least objectionable proposal, barring judges from striking down legislation or government action on the basis of “reasonableness,” a subjective standard that depends on the judge’s own, personal opinion.

Netanyahu had hoped to negotiate on the rest of the reforms, but the Supreme Court intervened, and Hamas attacked in October.

There were three issues at stake. The first was whether the Supreme Court had jurisdiction to hear the case at all. Israel does not have a formal constitution and has no real judicial review; the courts simply seized the power to review legislation in the 1990s.

In the absence of a constitution, Israel has relied on several Basic Laws that establish the structure of the government. But these can be amended by a simple majority vote of the parliament, or Knesset, which is how the judicial reform was passed last year.

The Supreme Court took the case eagerly, and heard oral arguments in September, before the war. Netanyahu and the coalition government said that the Court had no authority to nullify amendments to the Basic Law, from which it drew its own authority.

Ultimately, 13 of the 15 justices agreed with the argument that the Supreme Court could nullify amendments to the Basic Law, even the Basic Law governing the judiciary itself. (Conservative critics say that only underlines the need for judicial reform.)

The second issue was the judicial reform itself. The court split closely, but ultimately the outgoing Supreme Court president, Esther Hayut, ruled that “reasonableness” was appropriate, given the lack of other checks on legislative or executive power.

Part of Hayut’s argument was that the reform had only been passed by the governing majority in the Knesset in a party-line vote, suggesting it lacked broader political appeal — though there is no existing supermajority requirement for amending Basic Laws.

The third issue was whether Israel’s Declaration of Independence establishes a constitutional foundation for Israel. The document proclaims Israel shall provide equal rights for all, among other ideas, though the signatories did not think they were making law.

Hayut argued that the legislature cannot make changes that alter the character of Israel as laid down by the Declaration, though again this is a subjective standard, and the Declaration has many principles, including religious ones, from which to choose.

Before the ongoing war, the Supreme Court’s decision would have led to a constitutional crisis, as the legislature faced off against the judiciary. However, Netanyahu’s government has taken the high road. Time will tell if the voters reward that sense of duty.

Wander Franco, the Major League Baseball star who allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a minor, reportedly had homes in his native Dominican Republic raided by police on Tuesday.

According to Listin Diario, the Santa Domingo Prosecutor’s Office carried out raids on his family home in Palo Blanco before then going to another home in the Villa Real area from 3pm local time. The Tampa Bay Rays player, who is currently suspended by the team, was not apparently at either residency.

The publication also claims that authorities left telephone numbers with Franco’s wife for him to contact them.

Franco has always kept his wife out of the spotlight, never naming her in interviews – but earlier this year DailyMail.com revealed she is 21-year-old Rachelly Paulino. They are childhood sweethearts and have two children together.

The 22-year-old Franco has been under investigation since multiple allegations surfaced across social media in August. It is not clear if the raids concern a specific allegation or are connected to them all. DailyMail.Com has contacted the Dominican Republic prosecutors for comment.

Police in Dominican Republic reportedly raided two homes of Wander Franco on Tuesday

Franco has denied the allegations, going live on his Instagram account when they first emerged to address them.

‘They’re saying I got with a young girl, that I’m running around with a minor out there,’ Franco told teammates, in Spanish, during his live broadcast. ‘How crazy is that, dude? People don’t know what to do with their time.

‘Those people need to get moving. One is here focused, doing my thing, you see, thanks to God. That’s why I prefer to be on my side and not get involved with anybody because people are so gossipy.’

The age of consent in the Dominican Republic is 18.

Tampa Bay signed Franco to an $182million, 11-year contract in November 2021, a deal with a team option for 2033 that could be worth $223million.

MLB itself put Franco on administrative leave back in August as the league carried out its own investigation, which is still ongoing. A player continues to receive pay and accrue major league service while on administrative leave.

‘Per an agreement between MBL and the MLBPA, Wander Franco has been placed on Administrative Leave until further notice as MLB continues its ongoing investigation,’ the MLB statement read.

‘The administrative leave, effective immediately, is not disciplinary under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. We will comment further at the appropriate time.’

Baseball is currently in the offseason and the Rays don’t have their first spring training game until February 24 against Atlanta Braves.

Their MLB season starts properly on March 28, at home to Toronto Blue Jays.

When the allegations against Franco surfaced, the Rays removed him from any posters and billboards around the team’s Tropicana Field stadium.

Baseball Hall of Famer David Ortiz said in August that he had tried reaching out to the 22-year-old.

‘When I heard about this situation, I tried to make myself available to Wander to see how I could help him because I really wanted to know what was happening with that kid,’ Ortiz said last week on Grandes En Los Deportes.

The Boston Red Sox legend said he previously sat down with the shortstop during the ‘Midsummer Classic’ festivities in Seattle in July.

‘I spent a long time talking to Wander at the All-Star Game, I really liked him because he is a good kid, like all youth,’ Ortiz said. ‘But the mission of one as a veteran is to guide those kids, not trample on them or mistreat them.’

The normally bustling biblical birthplace of Jesus looks like a ghost town on Christmas Eve, with celebrations in Bethlehem, located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, called off as the war in Gaza continues.

The festive lights and Christmas tree that normally decorate Manger Square are missing, as are the throngs of foreign tourists who normally gather each year for the holiday.

“It’s a very sad Christmas. People are watching the news, they have friends and family members in Gaza,” Mitri Raheb, a Palestinian Christian theologian and former pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem, told CBC’s Day 6.

“When they look and see the genocide taking place there, they are not up for celebrations and also they are angry that the world cannot even agree on a ceasefire.”

PHOTOS | Gaza in ruins: Homes, schools and hospitals erased

This year, the usual nativity scene in Manger Square — featuring baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph and farm animals — is placed amid rubble and razor wire. This scene, Raheb said, is inspired by images and videos of people being pulled from the rubble in Gaza.

    A population in mourning

Most years Bethlehem basks in the central place it holds in the Christian story of Jesus’ life, born there in a stable because there was no room for his parents at the inn, and placed in an animal’s manger, the humblest of all possible beds.

Some 2,000 years later, pilgrims usually flock to the reputed location of that stable in Bethlehem’s Byzantine-era Church of the Nativity, where most Christmases there are joyful displays of lights and trees in Manger Square.

But with Israel’s campaign in Gaza having killed more than 20,000 people, according to health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave, the mostly Palestinian population of Bethlehem in the Occupied West Bank are in mourning too.

Day 69:16Palestinian Christians prepare for a subdued Christmas in Bethlehem

The city of Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank is said to be the birthplace of Christ and typically draws worshipers from around the world at Christmas but Mitri Raheb, a Christian Palestinian theologian who was born and raised in Bethlehem, says many of the festivities have been canceled this year because of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Christians make up around two per cent of the population across Israel and the Occupied Palestinian territories and have a smaller proportion in Gaza, according to Protecting Holy Land Christians, a campaign organized by the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, the war, triggered by a Hamas attack on Israeli towns on Oct. 7 that Israel says killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, has kept away the majority of expected foreign tourists hoping to celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem.

    Pope condemns ‘terrorism’ tactics

In the lead-up to Christmas, Pope Francis condemned the ongoing killing in Gaza and suggested Israel was using “terrorism” tactics in the region.

According to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) “sniper” killed two women earlier this month, whom the pope named as Nahida Khalil Anton and her daughter Samar, as they walked to a convent of nuns in the compound of the Holy Family Parish.

The Patriarchate statement said seven other people were shot and wounded as they tried to protect others.

“I continue to receive very grave and painful news from Gaza,” Pope Francis said on Dec. 17. “Unarmed civilians are the objects of bombings and shootings. And this happened even inside the Holy Family parish complex, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, people who are sick or disabled, nuns.”

An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the incident was still under review and had no immediate comment on the Pope’s words, the Reuters news agency reported.

“The IDF only targets terrorists and terror infrastructure and does not target civilians, no matter their religion,” the Israeli military said.

‘This is what happened to the Holy Family’

While celebrations are muted in Bethlehem, former pastor Raheb said “the story of Christmas itself is of great importance and essence” this year.

He drew similarities between the once pregnant Mary being on the run from Nazareth to Bethlehem, and 50,000 pregnant Palestinian women in Gaza having nowhere safe to turn today.

Raheb also pointed to Herod, the King of Judea, ordering the murder of children in Bethlehem in an attempt to kill baby Jesus, as similar to the thousands of children killed in Gaza.

WATCH | ‘Sadness and sorrow’ mark Christmas in Bethlehem

‘Bethlehem is celebrating Christmas with sadness and sorrow,’ says Palestinian tourism minister

Christmas in Bethlehem will not have its usual joy and will be without tourists in the wake of ongoing violence in Gaza, says Palestinian Minister of Tourism Rula Maayah. ‘Unfortunately this year, we’re receiving Christmas without tourists from the world and without Palestinians from other governorates because of the war on Gaza,’ she said.

“Their homes are destroyed. They are delivering [babies] in tents on the streets,” Raheb said. “This is what happened to the Holy Family 2,000 years ago.”

As Canadians prepare for the holiday weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared a message on Christmas Eve highlighting the values of Christmas.

“For Christians, it’s also a time to celebrate the birth of Christ and the values he embodied. Values like compassion, kindness, and hope,” he said. “That’s not just the true spirit of Christmas, it’s also the true spirit of Canada.”

    • Lil Wayne has claimed Ja Morant should be the next face of the NBA
    • The Grizzlies’ Morant only recently returned from a 25-game suspension
    • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Rapper Lil Wayne has claimed Ja Morant is the best candidate to take over as the face of the NBA once LeBron James retires.

That is despite the Memphis Grizzlies star’s disciplinary issues that recently saw him return from a 25-game suspension after a video of him flashing a handgun was posted online.

The video showed Morant sitting in the passenger seat of a car and was posted after he finished serving an eight-game suspension in March for another video in which he displayed a handgun in a Denver-area strip club.

Morant played for the first time on Tuesday night and scored a sublime buzzer beater against the New Orleans Pelicans.

He has proven himself to be a sublime player on the court and a key player for the Grizzlies but off-court issues have dogged his career so far.

But, when asked who should take over as the face of the NBA when LeBron walks away, Lil Wayne said Morant was the ‘obvious answer’.

He explained: ‘To me I think the obvious answer is Ja.

‘The NBA is entertainment. What I mean by that is there was always Michael Jordan and that was, you know, like God.

‘You gonna watch these Atlanta Hawks games just to see Dominique (Wilkins) and see if he can get one of ’em off.

‘I’m gonna watch these Portland games to see if Clyde (Drexler) going to get him one.

‘Ja’s teams are actually competitive when he’s there and when he’s doing his thing.’

Morant was the No. 2 pick overall in the 2019 draft, 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2022 Most Improved Player. He is also a two-time All Star.

The ban for gun play is not the only thing troubling Morant off the court, either.

Morant allegedly struck a then-17-year-old boy, Josh Holloway, at his Memphis mansion

A Tennessee judge on Wednesday said she wouldn’t immediately hand down a ruling on whether his legal team successfully argued that the NBA star is immune from being sued by a teenager he punched during a pickup game in 2022.

The lawsuit filed by Joshua Holloway accuses Morant of assaulting him when the Grizzlies guard punched him during a pickup game at the home of Morant’s parents on July 26, 2022.

Then 17, Holloway had been invited to play at the private court of the Morant family. Holloway is now 18 and he plays for Samford University.

Morant says he was defending himself after Holloway aggressively threw the basketball at him with a one-handed, baseball-style pass and hit him in the face.

Morant’s father, Tee Morant, has testified that the family has for years invited young local basketball players and friends of Morant to play on their full-sized home court.

Morant’s parents cook a meal for the players after the pickup games.

Holloway had been invited to play several times and had built a friendly relationship with the Morants.

Ja Morant testified that the teen behaved well and showed respect to him and his family during his previous visits.

With all of the depressing news in the world, many people are justifiably afraid that humanity is careening toward extinction. A 2021 poll of 10,000 young people aged 16 to 25 found that 56% believed humanity is “doomed” due to climate change. Even if climate change doesn’t take us out, there are the existential threats posed by war with nuclear explosives or other weapons of mass destruction, a lurking specter thanks to global conflicts spanning from Israel to Ukraine.

These are depressing subjects to contemplate, but few are more relevant — and by discussing them, we at least make it theoretically possible to solve the underlying problems.

But what if it is humanity’s steep decline came not from the usual suspects, like climate change or apocalyptic AI, but by something more basic? What if our patriarchal society is brought to its knees by universal impotence?

That may be where exactly we are headed. According to numerous metrics, humanity is in the midst of a fertility crisis. In April, the World Health Organization released a report revealing that roughly 1 in 6 people attempting to conceive today experience fertility issues. In the United States roughly 9% of men and 11% of women have fertility issues, according to the United States National Institutes of Health.

Yet with current technology, it’s unlikely that humanity will go extinct from this alone. Instead, I believe our species faces a future in which only the rich will be able to reproduce.

That statement may seem overly dramatic, but the evidence seems to be taking us down this path. As environmental and reproductive epidemiologist Dr. Shanna Swan reported in her 2021 book “Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race,” the average human sperm count has roughly halved, plummeting from 99 million per milliliter to 47 million per milliliter between 1973 and 2011. Swan is not alone in reaching this conclusion. Hagai Levine, professor of epidemiology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, found that sperm counts fell an average of 1.2% every year between 1973 to 2018, from 104 to 49 million/ml. As of 2000, the rate of decline increased to more than 2.6% for every year.

What’s causing this trend? It’s most likely environmental pollution, especially endocrine disruptors, or chemicals that can interfere with the proper functioning of our hormones.

In her book, Swan focused on the endocrine disruptors widely used in plastics. There is no realistic way that we will ever remove all of these endocrine disruptors from our environment, at least not any time soon. If this downward trend in fertility continues, and once our average sperm count reaches less than 15 million per milliliter, the only people able to reproduce will be those who can afford expensive medical technology like in vitro fertilization (IVF), which makes it possible to do so. (Levine places the threshold sperm count number at 40 million per milliliter.)

In her book — which I consider a must read for anyone who wants to understand humanity’s (likely) impending extinction — Dr. Swan examined phthalates, bisphenols and other plastic pollutants. As Swan told Salon in 2021, if these chemicals interfere with male fetal development at the “delicately programmed time” during which they develop their reproductive system, i.e. puberty, the eventual adult will suffer with issues like inadequate sperm count. Plastic items containing these chemicals are literally everywhere: From medical tubing and automobile parts to beverage containers and vinyl flooring, from the packaging containing our products to the fish we eat from the ocean (thanks, microplastics).

If these chemicals interfere with male fetal development at the “delicately programmed time” during which they grow their reproductive system, the eventual adult will suffer with issues like inadequate sperm count.

Women are not spared from endocrine disruptors either. An August study in the journal Frontiers in Physiology found that microplastics and nanoplastics have a harmful effect on the female reproductive systems of females in multiple other species, not just humans, though the authors cautioned it was too early to make firm conclusions.

But chemicals from plastics are not alone in disrupting our endocrine system. They are only one ingredient in a toxic stew that is literally hitting us in our collective gonads. According to a recent study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, common chemicals in pesticides like organophosphates and N-methyl carbamates are linked to plummeting sperm counts. Just as Swan reached her conclusion after analyzing decades of research on global sperm counts and plastics-based endocrine disruptors, the authors of the study compared sperm counts of men who work in agriculture (and are thus more exposed to pesticides) with the sperm of men with less exposure. Yet no man is totally unexposed to these chemicals; they are ubiquitous in the pesticides which cover any food we grow from the ground. (Pesticides have also been linked to fertility issues in women as well as ovarian disorders, stillbirths, premature births and development abnormalities.)

Humanity’s fertility is similarly screwed, so to speak, because of so-called “forever chemicals,” or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). A 2022 study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that mothers exposed to a mixture of seven common PFAS produced male offspring who had less sperm and/or unhealthy sperm. Speaking with Salon by email at the time, lead author Dr. Sandra Søgaard Tøttenborg of the University of Copenhagen emphasized that the study had only proved a link, not causation. Even so, it determined that there is “a statistically significant association between exposure to a mixture of PFAS in early pregnancy and lower sperm concentration and total sperm count and higher proportion of non-progressive and immotile sperm.”

A group of researchers from Mount Sinai Hospital found PFAS also have a detrimental impact on female fertility, as detailed in a paper in the journal Science of the Total Environment.

“PFAS can disrupt our reproductive hormones and have been linked with delayed puberty onset and increased risks for endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome in few previous studies. What our study adds is that PFAS may also decrease fertility in women who are generally healthy and are naturally trying to conceive,” senior author Damaskini Valvi, an assistant professor of environmental medicine and public health at Icahn Mount Sinai and a nationally recognized expert on the dangers of PFAS, said in a statement. “We also know that PFAS exposure begins in utero and transfers from the mother to the fetus, as many PFAS have been detected in cord blood, the placenta, and breast milk. Preventing exposure to PFAS is therefore essential to protect women’s health as well as the health of their children.”

Like pesticides and plastics, there is simply no getting away from PFAS. They are in fast food wrappers and receipt paper, non-stick cookware and water-resistant fabrics, microwave popcorn bags and cosmetics. So what can humanity do to address this impending sperm count crisis?

Ideally, we would completely stop using products that contain endocrine disruptors. This means radically overhauling how we grow our food and manufacture consumer products, a self-imposed economic revolution that requires more concerted willpower than our species has demonstrated up to this point. Therefore the only alternative is to make it possible for us to reproduce even with sperm count lower than 15 million per milliliter. The good news is that we have the technology to make that possible through IVF. The bad news is that the technology is not provided universally, much in the way that education and health care are largely inaccessible in the United States.

That is why I hope to start the conversation now by saying that if IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies are not universally accessible, then only the rich will be able to breed in the future. It is a future we can avoid, but it has to start with an honest conversation about the technology we use today.

In December, as we approach the beginning of a new year, many people start to evaluate their lives — what they are happy with, and what they would change if they had the chance.

For many, it is a passing thought or conversation, a wish or New Year’s resolution, but there is a way to really delve into what you would like from the coming 12 months.

I recently did an introspective activity with my teenage niece, aimed at helping her learn about herself and think about the direction she would like to take. It involved lots of blank pages of paper and colourful pens, as we talked, wrote about and drew the things that were important to us — which qualities we admired in others, which we would like to embody more for ourselves, and what we wanted and needed.

I hadn’t anticipated that the activity would also have an impact on me, but as I helped her through the process, a theme emerged for my own life.

We were writing down the words, she on her page and I on mine, and I looked at those in my handwriting — tender, patient, slow, intentional, kind, present. Caring for a new baby and an active 14-month-old means that life feels like a whirlwind, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, in this busy time, it’s easy to find myself embodying the opposite of the virtues I had identified.

Yet it’s that same whirlwind, and the accompanying awareness of how fast time flies by, that makes me want that slow pace, where I can enjoy, without stress, these precious moments that I know will be gone all too soon.

I want to be able to fully engage in playing, to laugh and cuddle with my little ones — if that means my household is not immaculate or I miss a few of the incessant events of this time of year, so be it. The activity helped to crystallise this desire and make it into a priority I can hold going forward, to savouring the present and embracing the beautiful chaos that is motherhood.

The probe into Hunter Biden remains “ongoing,” Special Counsel David Weiss revealed Thursday after charging the president’s son with nine tax violations in California.

The ongoing investigation indicates Weiss could bring more charges against Hunter. Some Republicans believe Weiss should charge Hunter for not registering as a foreign agent and for improperly soliciting escorts.

In total, Hunter faces 17 years on tax charges and 25 years on gun charges. Weiss brought three gun charges against Hunter in September.

Legal experts say Hunter’s latest indictment could impact how he combats the House impeachment inquiry. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) subpoenaed Hunter to appear before Congress the week of December 10 or be held in contempt of Congress.

“The immediate question is whether this leak will be used to kick over the table in Congress. Hunter was holding a bad hand with a real threat of contempt if he failed to appear for the deposition,” legal scholar Jonathan Turley posted on X.

“The alternatives are precarious for Hunter. If he testifies, he faces a buzzsaw deposition. If he fails to appear, he faces contempt. In that sense, the new indictment could offer an opportunity to blame others for his compelled silence,” he said.

Whether or not Hunter appears before Congress, he will face significant legal challenges in his tax and gun cases. Comer credited the IRS whistleblowers for exposing the Biden administration’s “political interference” in the probe. Weiss was set to agree to a sweetheart plea deal with Hunter until the deal fell apart under judicial scrutiny. The judge was aware of the IRS whistleblower claims.

“This would not have been possible without the two brave IRS whistleblowers, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, blowing the whistle,” the House Oversight Committee posted on X. “Americans should applaud these men for their courage to expose the truth.”

WATCH: IRS Whistleblower Speaks Publicly for First Time, Says DOJ Intervened to Slow-Walk Hunter Probe to “Benefit” Him

The committee suggested the ongoing probe could implicate President Joe Biden. Shapley previously told Congress he was prevented from investigating the “big guy”:

When you see 10 held by H for the big guy and we have other correspondence where they are saying, don’t call dad – you know, call dad something else, call him – because we are trying to confuse or conceal who it is, that is issue for concern. And was there 10 percent that went to the big guy? We will never know because we weren’t allowed to investigate that.

House investigators opened a probe into the Biden family in November 2022. They revealed Joe Biden received money from James Biden and Hunter Biden. They also showed that nine additional Biden family members received payments from the family’s foreign business ventures, including two of the president’s grandchildren.

More evidence against Joe Biden can be found here.
