KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — April Coleman spent Sunday cavorting in the street with family and friends, passing out green beads at the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Kansas City, Missouri, and she said she would not be deterred by last month’s deadly shooting at another big mass gathering.

A rally honoring the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs was disrupted when two groups of people began shooting at each other, leaving a mother of two dead and about two dozen others injured — half of them under 16.

Coleman acknowledged that the shooting wasn’t completely out of her mind, but said she never considered skipping the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

“I don’t want to live my life in fear,” she said. “I still want to come out and have fun with good people.”

This time around, under a heavy police presence, things were calm. Police spokeswoman Alayna Gonzalez said just two people were arrested, both for non-violent crimes.

Erin Gabert of the parade committee said the crowd appeared somewhat smaller this year, but it was unclear if that was because people were still fearful after the shooting, or if the brisk, breezy weather kept people away.

Along the route, a man driving a Corvette in the parade stopped long enough to shake the hand of a police officer, and several others did, too. One float was pulled by a truck with a sign on the front that read, “Kansas City Strong.”

Parade organizers and police were diligent in taking steps to ensure safety. Gonzalez said 400 officers were on the scene. Uniformed officers lined the lengthy parade route, while many more in plainclothes mingled amid the green-clad crowd. Other officers watched from rooftops. A police helicopter hovered above the parade.

The Super Bowl rally shooting showed, though, that there are limitations to what can be done to stop a sudden outbreak of violence. About 800 officers were on the streets that day when the shots rang out toward the end of the Feb. 14 rally.

Police said two groups of people became agitated, apparently because each group didn’t like the way members of the other were looking at them. Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old radio personality, was standing nearby when she was fatally struck.

Last month, two men were charged with second-degree murder and other crimes. Three other people were charged Monday, accused of illegally purchasing high-powered rifles and guns with extended magazines, including guns involved in the shooting. And two juveniles are in custody on gun-related and resisting arrest charges.

Organizers of the St. Patrick’s Day parade and people involved in other big area parades met shortly after the shooting to compare emergency plans and discuss best practices to deal with potential problems.

Parade leaders urged paradegoers to leave their guns at home and to arrive with a plan for where to park and where to meet if people got separated. Families were encouraged to have kids wear something that identifies them. They also were encouraged to tell police or a volunteer if they saw anything out of the ordinary.

Gabert understood why some may have been hesitant to attend this year’s parade. Those who did, she said, appeared to have a good time.

“It was nice to have some normalcy and feel good, and enjoy St. Patrick’s Day,” she said.

Former President Donald Trump claimed that he — not President Biden — will protect Social Security and warned of a “bloodbath” if he loses in November as he campaigned for Senate candidate Bernie Moreno in Ohio.

Trump, speaking on a wind-whipped airfield outside of Dayton Saturday, praised his chosen candidate in the race as an “America first champion” and “political outsider who has spent his entire life building up Ohio communities.”

“He’s going to be a warrior in Washington,” Trump said, days after securing enough delegates to clinch the 2024 Republican nomination.

Moreno faces Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Ohio state Sen. Matt Dolan in Tuesday’s GOP primary. LaRose and Moreno have aligned themselves with the pro-Trump faction of the party, while Dolan is backed by more establishment Republicans, including Gov. Mike DeWine and former Sen. Rob Portman.

Saturday’s rally was hosted by Buckeye Values PAC, a group backing Moreno’s candidacy. But Trump used the stage to deliver a profanity-filled version of his usual rally speech that again painted an apocalyptic picture of the country if Biden wins a second term.

“If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath…It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country,” he warned, while talking about the impact of offshoring on the country’s auto industry and his plans to increase tariffs on foreign-made cars.

Later, Trump claimed that, “If this election isn’t won, I’m not sure that you’ll ever have another election in this country.”

Trump repeatedly noted his difficulty reading from his teleprompters, which could be seen visibly whipping in 35-mile-per-hour wind gusts.

In a statement in response to Trump’s “bloodbath” comments Saturday, James Singer, spokesperson for the Biden presidential campaign, said that Trump “wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge.”

When reached by CBS News in an attempt to clarify Trump’s “bloodshed” remark, Jason Miller, senior adviser for the Trump campaign, responded that “any reporter that falls for this Biden camp spin is stupid.”

Trump also dismissed recent allegations against Moreno, comparing them to attacks he has faced through the years, including his criminal indictments. Trump has been charged in four separate cases that span his handling of classified documents to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

“He’s getting some very tough Democrat fake treatment right now,” Trump said. “And we’re not going to stand for it because I know this man. We all know this man. He’s a hero, he’s a winner. And we’re not going to let these people — these people are sick.”

The Associated Press reported on Thursday that in 2008, someone with access to Moreno’s work email account created a profile on an adult website. The AP could not definitively confirm that it was created by Moreno himself. Moreno’s lawyer said a former intern created the account and provided a statement from the intern, Dan Ricci, who said he created the account as “part of a juvenile prank.”

Questions about the profile have circulated in GOP circles for the past month, sparking frustration among senior Republican operatives about Moreno’s potential vulnerability in a general election, according to seven people who are directly familiar with conversations about how to address the matter. They requested anonymity to avoid running afoul of Trump and his allies.

Trump, in his remarks, also accused Mr. Biden of posing a threat to Social Security as he continued to clean up comments from an interview earlier this week in which he appeared to voice openness to cuts.

“Your Social Security is going to be gone,” he warned of a Biden second term, even though Biden has pledged to protect and strengthen Social Security as it faces a projected budget shortfall. “You will not be able to have Social Security with this guy in office because he’s destroying the economics of our country. And that includes Medicare, by the way, and American seniors are gong to be in big trouble.”

“I made a promise that I will always keep Social Security, Medicare. We always will keep it. We never will cut it,” he said.

The comments came after Trump, in an interview with CNBC, answered a question about Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid by saying that, “there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements, tremendous bad management of entitlements. There’s tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do.”

Trump also continued to criticize Biden over his handling of the border, and the migrant crisis. And he laced into Dolan, calling him a “weak RINO” — a Republican in name only — and accused him of “trying to become the next Mitt Romney.” He also criticized the Dolan family, which owns Cleveland’s baseball team, for changing its name from the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians.

Trump was joined at the rally by Ohio Sen. JD Vance and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who have both stumped with Moreno and are considered potential vice-presidential candidates.

Noting comes easily for this Bruins team, even on a night like Saturday when it looked they would have every reason to feel good about themselves.

The B’s broke open a taut, playoff-like game with three goals in 2:56 early in the third period to take a 5-2 lead over a desperate Philadelphia Flyers who went into the night with a thin three-point cushion for a playoff spot. But the B’s let the Flyers back in the game and had to white-knuckle home a 6-5 victory at the Garden.

Coach Jim Montgomery lauded the Flyers for how hard they played and their never-say-die approach, as well as his own team’s early explosion in the third.

    But…

“We’ve got to learn that we’ve got to close out games,” said Montgomery. “You can’t just think it’s over. Other teams are desperate and it’s like a playoff game. There are going to be those momentum and emotional swings. We’ve got to be a little bit better and little more mature as a team to be able to close out those games, a little bit easier, especially when you’re up 5-2.”

And yet, despite this team’s plain-to-see blemishes, they find themselves in a spot few would have expected at the start of the season. With Florida’s second consecutive regulation loss, the B’s are not just at the top of the Atlantic Division standings, but they lead the entire NHL for the moment. After what happened to last season’s juggernaut,  the B’s know that it doesn’t mean much at this point. But there are a lot of teams who would change places with them.

“I think it’s a testament to what these guys have done here throughout the year,” said Jake DeBrusk, who stayed hot with a goal (17) and an assist. “Obviously there’s a lot of naysayers and people that didn’t think we’d make the playoffs and all that stuff. I feel like we’ve heard that two years in a row, so we knew we’d be all right. There’s a lot of trial and error. It’s not as pretty or as clean. But it’s a testament to what we can be as a team. Obviously, in the post-season everyone starts at zeroes and it’s a different game. But you always want advantages when you can get them. That’s what the regular season’s for.”

The game was a wild one.

With their coach John Tortorella back from a two-game suspension, the Flyers came ready to play. They contested every puck and held the B’s off the shot clock for the first 12:26. They also took the first lead of the game at 4:18. Along the right boards in the offensive zone, David Pastrnak, who’d just missed the net on a good chance from the slot, could not gather a loose puck. Charlie McAvoy pinched down and couldn’t get it either. That allowed Garnet Hathaway to break out on a 2-on-1 that developed into a 3-on-1. Hathaway made the cross-ice pass to Ryan Poehling, who blasted a one-timer past Jeremy Swayman.

The Bruins knew they were in a game and responded in kind, pushing back and starting to get some offensive zone time.

Later in the period, the B’s tied it up just seconds after they nearly went down 2-0. Travis Konecny got behind Parker Wotherspoon for a quick breakaway but Swayman stoned him with good pad stop. Wotherspoon quickly retrieved the puck and got it up to Jake DeBrusk. Cutting left to right, DeBrusk gained the zone with speed and fed Morgan Geekie, who was near the end of his shift. Geekie stepped into the right circle and unleashed a slap shot to the far top corner, his 16th of the year at 15:51.

They Flyers regained the lead on a second period power play. McAvoy delivered what looked like a good check through the body on Travis Konecny, but it rode up to catch the Flyer in the head after initial contact and he was called for an illegal check to the head. Just before the penalty expired, Joel Farabee tipped home a Cam York shot at 12:01 to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

But the B’s evened it up at 15:32 when they got their first power play of the game. Pavel Zacha won a faceoff and got it over to Brad Marchand. The captain could not handle the pass, but he stuck with it and sent a backhand pass through the slot for Charlie Coyle, who had a wide open net for his 22nd of the year, a new career high for the centerman.

The game was getting testy and, after a dustup after the horn to end the second period, matching minors were handed out and the third started with a 4-on-4. And it was with that extra ice that the B’s took their first lead of the game at 1:08 of the third. The B’s had controlled the play on the 4-on-4 and, after Pastrnak handed it off to an oncoming Coyle, who roofed it past Sandstroom.

That was just the start. Andrew Peeke picked up his first point as a Bruin, moving down on the right side and feeding John Beecher in front. Beecher first hit the post and then followed up his own rebound for his sixth.

Then just 19 seconds later, DeBrusk took a pass from Brad Marchand and made a pretty move to avoid the prone Sandstrom and tuck it inside the near post at 4:04.

With that, Tortorella called his timeout to stop the bleeding, which it did. Then they got two quick ones 1:08 apart late in the period.

The Flyers got one back with 5:48 left in the third when Sean Couturier caught Swayman leaning the wrong way and fed Nick Deslauriers from behind the net for a tap-in at the side of the net.

Then Morgan Frost got the Flyers back to within one with a beautiful between the legs finish at the top of the crease.

But with 2:59 left, Danton Heinen took off on a an odd-man rush off a defensive zone block and sniped a goal from the left wing.

It still wasn’t over. With 2:04 left in the third, Farabee scored on a wraparound with Sandstrom pulled.

That, however, was the merciful end to the Flyers’ comeback bid as the B’s somehow survived the onslaught for the win.

Global stocks are set to end the week on a tepid note, following seven weeks of gains, and the dollar stands firm, after hotter-than-forecast US inflation knocked back bets for how soon and often the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates.

MSCI’S global equity index was down 0.1 per cent on Friday and flat for the week following a strong rally for most of the first quarter of the year.

The dollar index, which measures the currency against the euro, yen and four other major peers, was steady at 103.38 following a rally on Thursday, heading for its best week since January.

The mood was cautions after a bigger-than-expected rise in producer prices in US data on Thursday added to a hot consumer inflation reading earlier in the week.

Traders have cut the odds of the US Federal Reserve, the world’s most influential central bank, cutting rates in June to 60 per cent, from about 67 per cent late on Wednesday, according to LSEG’s rate probability app.

Ahead of the Fed’s rate setting meeting next week, the market is now pricing in fewer than three US rate cuts for 2024, down from three to four roughly two weeks ago and around seven late in 2023.

US borrowing costs are currently in a range of 5.25 per cent to 5.5 per cent, more than a two-decade high.

US benchmark bond yields, which influence the cost of debt globally, held on Friday near the 4.3 per cent level they reached in the previous session for the first time this month, following their biggest jump in three months.

“Price pressures are looking more stubborn, with the process of disinflation taking longer than hoped,” added Kyle Rodda, senior markets analyst at Capital.com.

That, he added, was “raising the spectre of a potential air pocket ahead for the tech-driven rally”, in US and worldwide equity indices.

US stock futures pointed marginally higher on Friday, however, following a 0.29 per cent decline in the S&P 500 on Thursday that masked a big drop in chip sector shares.

“The market is resigned to seeing no rate cuts in the first half of the year,” said Eren Osman, wealth management director at Arbuthnot Latham.

“Investors are buying into the no-landing scenario,” he added, referring to an outlook where the global economy avoids a recession and central banks do not rush to loosen monetary policy unless inflation drops below target levels.

Elsewhere, Japan was in the global market spotlight, as speculation built that the Bank of Japan could exit its ultra-dovish monetary policies at its two-day meeting.

Jiji news agency reported on Thursday that the BOJ had started to make arrangements to end its negative interest rate policy at the gathering.

Sources told Reuters that the central bank would debate the end of negative rates while the government also appeared to back a policy shift.

Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Friday that the economy was no longer in deflation.

Japan’s 10-year bond yield rose to 0.795 per cent for the first time in more than three months earlier in Friday’s session.

Any yen strength, however, was overpowered by the resurgent dollar, which gained 0.2 per cent to 148.8 yen, continuing its rebound from a low of 146.48 a week ago.

    The euro extended Thursday’s decline to $US1.087 ($A1.654), after hitting a two-month high of $US1.0980 ($A1.6708) a week ago.

Elsewhere, oil prices succumbed to some profit-taking, following strong gains this week amid sharp declines in US crude and fuel inventories, drone strikes on Russian refineries and an increase in energy demand forecasts.

Brent crude futures for May were down 0.6 per cent, to $US85.90 ($A130.71) a barrel.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for April was down 0.7 per cent, to $US80.73 ($A122.84).

Bitcoin edged away from an all-time high reached on Thursday, as risk sentiment took a hit.

The head of Donald Trump’s Secret Service detail informed an agitated president on Jan. 6, 2021, that large groups of people had been denied entry to his rally that day because they were carrying prohibited items, the driver of his presidential SUV told congressional investigators, according to a transcript reviewed by POLITICO.

The testimony is further evidence that Trump was aware of potential security risks in the crowd, even before the mob had breached the Capitol.

The driver, who remains unidentified, drove Trump to and from his rally at the Ellipse on Jan. 6. After the rally, Trump’s supporters — riled up by his fervid speech — marched down the street, where Congress was attempting to certify the results of the 2020 election.

The driver described Trump’s exchange that day with his lead Secret Service agent, Robert Engel, in testimony he gave in November 2022 to the House Jan. 6 select committee. The transcript of his testimony had remained in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security — under terms the committee agreed to in order to secure the witness’ testimony — after the committee dissolved last year, until this week.

The driver told lawmakers that Trump pressed Engel for information about why large swaths of the crowd were not permitted past security magnetometers. Engel responded, according to the driver, by indicating that they had been stopped because they were carrying unspecified items that were prohibited past the security checkpoint.

The New York Times and the Washington Post reported on other aspects of the driver’s testimony earlier this week.

The driver’s account adds to the body of evidence that captures Trump’s state of mind on Jan. 6, a key aspect of the ongoing federal prosecution of the former president for attempting to subvert the election. Special counsel Jack Smith is attempting to prove that Trump was aware that the crowd he called to Washington presented a danger to the transfer of power, even as he made public statements that initially inflamed the crowd further. The transcript provides a new, firsthand glimpse of a private, unguarded moment Trump shared with his Secret Service detail.

President Joe Biden, according to the transcript, waived executive privilege to permit the driver to testify.

The driver couldn’t recall whether Engel told Trump about the security risks before his rally speech — when Trump urged the crowd he assembled to march on the Capitol and “fight like hell” to persuade Congress to deny Biden the presidency — or shortly after. The driver also recalled that Engel didn’t explicitly say members of the crowd were carrying weapons; rather, he said Engel informed Trump that members of the crowd had items that were not allowed through the magnetometers.

The exchange preceded — by at least an hour — Trump’s tweet assailing his vice president, Mike Pence, who was sheltering inside the Capitol, for refusing to acquiesce to his plan to block Biden’s victory. Investigators have contended Trump’s tweet was a trigger for some of the worst moments of violence that day.

The driver’s testimony corroborates a key piece of testimony provided to the select committee by Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows. Hutchinson’s explosive public testimony in June 2022 included her assertion that she overheard Trump, on the sidelines of his rally, concerned that his crowd looked too small and worrying that the magnetometers were keeping people out.

“I overheard the president say something to the effect of … ‘They’re not here to hurt me. Take the F’ing mags away. Let my people in,’” Hutchinson told the panel. “‘They can march to the Capitol from here. Let the people in. Take the F’ing mags away.’”

Trump has sharply disputed Hutchinson’s account, most forcefully her claim that another top Trump aide — Tony Ornato — had relayed an account that Trump was furious after his rally speech because the Secret Service had denied his plan to join supporters at the Capitol. Hutchinson recalled that Ornato had told her Trump became so irate that he lunged at Engel and toward the steering wheel of the SUV.

In an interview with conservative journalist John Solomon, Trump reiterated his objections to her account on Monday, calling them “made up, fabricated stories.” He also acknowledged, as he has before, that he pressed his Secret Service detail to take him to the Capitol, but denied that it was contentious.

“I said, I think, let’s go down to the Capitol. And the Secret Service was very nice and said, ‘Sir, really better for you to go back to the White House … we’re not prepared to go down there,’” Trump recalled. “And I understood that and it was no big argument.”

The driver told the Jan. 6 committee that he had no recollection of Trump lunging toward Engle and toward the steering wheel, and that he likely would have noticed if such a scuffle had occurred.

But the driver also confirmed other aspects of Hutchinson’s testimony, including that Trump was irate that morning because Pence had refused to accede to his demands. And he said that after Trump’s rally, Trump became insistent that the Secret Service take him to the Capitol, even though he was repeatedly told that doing so would be unsafe. Trump countered that he wasn’t concerned because the crowd was made up of his own supporters, the driver indicated.

In one exchange, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) emphasized that the committee had not interpreted Hutchinson’s testimony to suggest a physical assault had actually occurred. Rather, Cheney emphasized that Hutchinson was relaying a third-hand account. The driver agreed with her characterization and noted that he only watched Hutchinson’s testimony once — at the request of another investigating entity, though he didn’t specify which.

Smith, the special counsel prosecuting Trump, was appointed the same month the driver testified, but Justice Department prosecutors had been pursuing aspects of their Trump-related investigations for months before he joined. Inspectors general of multiple agencies have also been probing Jan. 6 and the government’s response.

The driver also indicated that he was summoned to answer questions about the episode by Secret Service attorneys two days after Hutchinson’s testimony.

In an exchange at the outset of the hearing, the driver’s attorney indicated that the driver had hoped to testify months earlier, shortly after Hutchinson’s bombshell allegations. Cheney responded that the reason for the months-long delay was that the Secret Service abruptly produced thousands of documents in August, September and October 2022, and the committee wanted to digest them before bringing in key witnesses.

The driver also indicated that he was among the large group of Secret Service officials who wiped his government-issued phone at the agency’s request during a 2021 upgrade, a decision that prompted significant scrutiny by the Jan. 6 committee.

Engel also testified to the select committee. His testimony is among the committee’s transcripts that remains nonpublic and in the custody of the Biden administration, though House Republicans are attempting to negotiate terms to obtain and potentially release some or all of his testimony.

Buoyed by the big four banks, which soared to record or multi-year highs, Australian shares reset their records to close the week as traders bolstered their bets of rate cuts through the second half of 2024.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 rallied to an all time intraday high of 7853.1 late in the session before later setting to 7847 — up 1.1 per cent at the closing bell.

Meanwhile, the broader All Ordinaries also reset its record, closing up one per cent to 8107.5.

The Australian dollar also moved higher against the greenback to buy US66.31c.

KCM Trade chief market analyst Tim Waterer said equities had been supported by a risk-on sentiment as investors were beginning to see a “light at the end of the tunnel” regarding looser monetary conditions this year.

“It’s been an encouraging week for investors regarding the interest rate outlook … obviously, financials being a very sensitive sector that will be the main beneficiary of the positive conditions on the market today,” Mr Waterer said.

Camera IconAustralia’s four big banks — Commonwealth, Westpac, NAB, ANZ — all reached record or multi-year highs. NCA NewsWire Credit: NCA NewsWire

However, an upside surprise on fresh US jobs numbers scheduled for release later tonight could put a dampener on sentiment, he added.

“If we did see a strong result tonight, that could cast some doubt as to whether the Fed could cut rates in June.”

Bar industrials, all 11 industry sectors finished in the green, led by financials which rallied two per cent after sector-heavyweight Commonwealth Bank surged 1.8 per cent to $121.45 — a fresh record high.

Westpac surged 2.6 per cent to $27.70 — a level not reached since November 2019 — while ANZ added 1.7 per cent to $29.81, which was its highest since August 2018, and NAB rose 2.3 per cent to $35.11 — a nine-year high.

The rally in financial stocks came as investor optimism grew over the prospect that the US Federal Reserve would begin slashing interest rates later this year.

In testimony to US lawmakers, Fed chair Jerome Power said the central bank was “not far” from being able to ease interest rates as it awaited greater confidence that inflation was returning to its two per cent target.

“When we do get that confidence, and we’re not far from it, it will be appropriate to dial back (interest rates),” he told the Senate’s powerful Banking Committee.

Shares on Wall Street rallied on the news, with Nasdaq-composite and the S&P500 index adding 1.5 per cent and one per cent, respectively, to both reach record highs.

The US benchmark, the Dow Jones index added 0.3 per cent.

Across the Atlantic, European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde indicated it could leapfrog the Fed and cut rates from June after it unveiled fresh projections showing inflation could hit the ECB’s two per cent target by 2025.

A sluggish December quarter GDP reading had also buoyed investors’ hopes of RBA rate cuts, Betashares chief economist David Bassanese said.

“With GDP numbers this week confirming a soft economic outlook, rate cuts seem firmly on the horizon,” Mr Bassanese said.

“Along with strength on Wall Street, we expect the records to keep tumbling for Australian shares with our year-end target of 8000 points likely to be met well ahead of schedule.”

In corporate news, Virgin Money vaulted 32.9 per cent to $4.08 after, their biggest intraday gain since the stock was listed in 2016, after it received an all-cash takeover bid from the UK’s Nationwide Building Society worth £2.9bn ($AU5.6bn).

Shares in Ramelius Resources added one per cent to $1.56 as it confirmed it was undertaking due diligence to acquire Canadian-listed gold miner Karora Resources in a deal worth a reported $700m to $1bn.

GQG Partners shed 1.8 per cent to $2.20 after it was revealed asset manager Pacific Current Group had sold a four per cent stake in the investment fund worth $257.3mvia a block trade.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Luis Suárez scored in stoppage time and Lionel Messi also scored after halftime to help Inter Miami tie Nashville 2-2 Thursday night in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The teams will meet Wednesday night in Florida in the second leg of the home-and-home, total-goals series in the round of 16.

Suárez tied it up scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time with a header off a cross from former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets. Messi got Inter Miami on the board with his first CONCACAF goal in the 52nd minute.

“It’s a completely different level of intelligence from the likes of Lionel Messi and Busquets and Suárez,” Nashville coach Gary Smith said of facing Inter Miami with the talent the team has added. “Completely different level. And for the most part, I thought the guys did a wonderful job.”

Jacob Shaffelburg scored in the fourth minute, then again in the 47th minute after halftime to put Nashville up 2-0 before a crowd of 30,109. Nashville thought it had a 3-1 lead when Shaq Moore scored in the 83rd minute, only to have the goal waived off for being offside.

Smith wasn’t happy with the officiating, making clear he hadn’t seen Moore’s goal. Smith said he thought the rules required clear and obvious error or the decision on the field should stand.

    All eyes were on Messi.

Once the match was set last week, ticket prices seemed ready to soar, similar to Messi’s first visit to Nashville last August in the Leagues Cup final. Tickets remained available Thursday, though pink Messi jerseys dotted GEODIS Park. Fans also chanted the name of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner repeatedly.

“There’s a slightly different edge and feel to the atmosphere when Messi’s in town,” Smith said. “You know, he’s the show and an exceptional individual.”

Messi scored in regulation and converted the first shot in penalty kicks the last time these teams played here. He had to be a bit more patient Thursday night.

He missed in the 13th minute trying to bend the ball just inside the left edge of the goal from the middle of the box with his left-footed kick going just wide left. Messi appeared to ask himself how he didn’t score. Nashville keeper Joe Willis stopped Messi’s shot off his right foot in the 37th minute from the box.

A foul gave Messi a chance just before halftime in stoppage time, but his free kick went into Nashville’s wall. Julian Gressel tried to chase down the ball and got his right foot on the ball, only to see Willis smother the shot as the half expired.

Shaffelburg put Nashville up 1-0 in the fourth minute, scoring over Drake Callender off a pass from Moore, tucking the ball under the crossbar before going to his knees celebrating the early lead. Shaffelburg scored from the left side off a pass from Sean Davis for a 2-0 lead.

That didn’t last long as Messi finally did what everyone expected to happen at some point.

Suárez found his former Barcelona teammate Messi just outside the box. Messi used his left foot to squeeze the ball between Willis’ outstretched right fingers and inside the left post in the 52nd minute to pull Miami to 2-1.

Messi had a bit of a scare late in regulation when Nashville defender Lukas Macnaughton stepped on his left calf. A trainer checked on Messi, who remained on the pitch.

Before the match, Nashville announced a contract extension with German midfielder Hany Mukhtar to keep the 2022 MLS MVP and Golden Boot winner with the club through 2026. Nashville also has an option for 2027 for the two-time All-Star who is the club’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points.

Callendar made a nice stop on a Mukhtar shot at the post in the 23rd minute. Mukhtar hadn’t had a chance to see the replay of Moore’s goal taken away for being offside.

“I heard it’s very, very tight,” Mukhtar said. “Not not ideal for us, but it’s just halftime. So we’re going there next week and start from 0-0.”

The Australian share market has traded above 7,800 points for the first time on signs that rate cuts in Europe and the United States could come sooner rather than later.

At noon AEDT on Friday, the S&P/ASX200 had risen 74.5 points, or 0.96 per cent, to 7,837.8.

With a few hours of trading left, the benchmark index was on track for a 1.2 per cent gain for the week.

The broader All Ordinaries at midday was up 72.1 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 8,098.4.

The gains came after both European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde and US Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell struck a more dovish stance than previously.

Ms Lagarde told reporters in Frankfurt that while the ECB couldn’t cut rates before receiving more data on wages, it would receive that information in the next few months.

“We will know a little more in April, but we will know a lot more in June,” she said.

“That was a tacit nod to a June easing, providing there are no nasty surprises in between,” NAB senior market strategist Gavin Friend wrote in a client note.

Meanwhile Mr Powell was more definitive about monetary easing before the US Senate overnight than he had been in comments to the House the previous day, telling the Senate Banking Committee that the Fed was “not far” from being able to cut rates.

The S&P500 rallied one per cent on the news and that enthusiasm carried over domestically, with the Australian market steadily gaining ground all morning.

Every sector at lunchtime was in the green except for industrials, which had dipped 0.1 per cent.

The heavyweight financial sector was the biggest gainer, rising 1.8 per cent.

Westpac had added 2.4 per cent to a four-year high of $27.66, NAB advanced 1.8 per cent to a nine-year high of $34.93 and CBA and ANZ were both up 1.6 per cent, to an all-time high of $121.10 and a near-seven year high of $29.76.

Virgin Money UK soared 32.7 per cent to a five-year high of $4.075 after UK’s sixth-largest bank – a 2016 spinoff from NAB – tentatively agreed to be taken over by Nationwide building society for STG2.9 billion ($A5.6 billion) in a tie-up that would remove it from the ASX.

Australian shareholders would receive 2.20 pence ($4.26) per Chess Depository Interest.

The mining sector was having a quieter day, up 0.1 per cent, with BHP more or less flat, Rio Tinto down 0.2 per cent and Fortescue dipping 0.7 per cent.

The Australian dollar jumped above 66 US cents for the first time since mid-January, buying 66.15 US cents, from 65.78 cents at Wednesday’s ASX close.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Zach Edey had 28 points and eight rebounds as No. 3 Purdue rallied in the second half to beat No. 12 Illinois 77-71 on Tuesday night, becoming the first team in 17 years to win consecutive outright Big Ten regular-season championships.

Fletcher Loyer added 16 points for the Boilermakers (27-3, 16-3), who had already clinched at least a share of their second straight conference title with Saturday night’s victory over Michigan State.

The previous Big Ten team to win back-to-back outright regular-season crowns was Ohio State in 2006 and 2007.

Braden Smith had 13 points and six assists for Purdue, which improved to 7-0 against ranked opponents this season. Mason Gillis scored 10 off the bench.

Loyer hit a 3-pointer with 3:08 left that put Purdue ahead for good, 67-66. That started a personal seven-point run that gave the Boilermakers a 71-66 lead with 1:27 to go.

Purdue outscored Illinois 43-31 in the second half and shot 8 of 10 on 3s.

Marcus Domask led second-place Illinois (22-8, 13-6) with 20 points. Coleman Hawkins had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Quincy Guerrier scored 12 for the Fighting Illini, but Terrence Shannon Jr. had a season-low 11 points on 3-for-13 shooting — including 0 of 4 from 3-point range.

Illinois failed to score at least 80 points for the first time in nine games.

“It was important for us to take care of the ball, not turn it over and make them earn everything,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “We did that in the second half. They played better than us in the first half.”

Illinois coach Brad Underwood said the game came down to a couple of possessions when the Illini didn’t make a play.

“A rebound, a loose ball. That’s what sends you home in March,” he said. “If that’s the best team in the country, we’re right there. But we’ve got to make plays.”

Edey scored 18 points in the first half, shooting 9 of 13 from the field, but the Illini led 40-34 at halftime. Purdue didn’t take its first lead until Gillis’ 3-pointer with 10:11 left put the Boilermakers in front 56-54.

    BIG PICTURE

Purdue: All three of the Boilermakers’ losses have come on the road in Big Ten games, to Northwestern, Nebraska and Ohio State. Knocking off Illinois, which had lost just twice at home all season, was an impressive addition to Purdue’s sparkling resume.

Illinois: Shannon didn’t play when Illinois lost 83-78 at Purdue on Jan. 5. It was one of six games he missed while serving a university-imposed suspension because of a rape charge in Kansas. Foul trouble kept Shannon on the bench for a large portion of the first half Tuesday night, and he wasn’t much of a factor in the game. He didn’t have a defensive rebound.

    SAME STARTERS

Purdue has sent out the same starting five in all 30 games, the longest stretch to begin a season in school history. The Boilermakers have never had a season when they started the same lineup in every game.

    SO LONG

This was the final home game at the State Farm Center for Shannon, Hawkins, Domask, Guerrier and Justin Harmon. Of the five, only Hawkins played his entire career at Illinois. The others were transfers.

    SHORT TRIP

The Illinois and Purdue campuses are 91 miles apart, making it the second-closest geographic rivalry in the Big Ten behind Michigan and Michigan State. Those schools are separated by 64 miles.

    UP NEXT

Purdue: Home vs. Wisconsin on Sunday.

Illinois: Plays at Iowa on Sunday.

CLEVELAND (AP) — With every one of Dean Wade’s shots that splashed through the net, the Cavaliers got closer to the Celtics and his confidence grew.

“The rim looked like a swimming pool,” he said.

Wade made five 3-pointers and scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Celtics by himself, and Cleveland won a replay review in the final second to stun Boston 105-104 on Tuesday night, ending the NBA’s longest winning streak this season at 11 games.

With NFL star Travis Kelce urging on Cleveland’s crowd from a courtside seat, the Cavs overcame a 22-point deficit in the final period, the biggest fourth-quarter comeback in franchise history.

“Honestly, when the Kelce brothers started hyping up the crowd, we knew we could do it,” Cavs center Jarrett Allen said.

Cleveland stormed back without All-Star Donovan Mitchell, who missed the game with a knee injury, as well as forward Evan Mobley, who went out with a sprained ankle in the third quarter.

Wade, who finished with a career-high 23 points, came to the rescue with his barrage of 3s in the fourth and a putback dunk with 19.1 seconds left that put the Cavs ahead 105-104.

The Celtics looked for a final shot and All-Star Jayson Tatum, who led Boston with 26 points, appeared to draw a foul on Cleveland’s Darius Garland while shooting a fadeaway jumper with 0.7 seconds left.

The Cavs challenged the call, and following the review, officials said it was Tatum’s leg that caused the contact and not Garland.

“I thought it was great defense,” said Garland, who wasn’t positive the call would go his way. “I knew the leg kick was kind of in play. My shin still kind of hurts from it, so I’m glad that it was overturned.”

Tatum felt Garland made enough contact to warrant free throws.

“I thought I was fouled, but they (refs) didn’t think I got fouled, which was tough because we would have got the tip-in,” he said. “It’s a weird way to end the game.”

It was the latest stirring win at home for the Cavs, who beat Dallas last week on Max Strus’s 60-foot shot at the buzzer.

Following the game, Wade, who grew up in Kansas and is a die-hard Chiefs fan, said Kelce made him an offer.

“He said if basketball didn’t work out for me, I could be a backup tight end,” Wade said. “I got good hands. That was just awesome. Pretty cool.”

The Cavs are counting on Wade to be more consistent, especially not being at full strength.

“He’s a multifaceted guy. He’s not just a spot-up shooter,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “We know the things he can do defensively. But he has an offensive game and tonight he got it rolling.

“But the belief, the confidence, that’s who Dean Wade is at his core.”

Allen added 21 points and 12 rebounds and Garland had 16 points and 11 assists for the Cavs, who made eight of 11 3-pointers in the fourth. Reserve Georges Niang also made two big 3s to help fuel Cleveland’s rally.

Kristaps Porzingis scored 24 points and Jaylen Brown had 21 for Boston, which lost for the first time since Feb. 1. The Celtics won three times by more than 40 points in that stretch.

“That’s what happens when you don’t match the gas and don’t put an NBA team away,” Brown said. “Tip your cap to Dean Wade. He got hot, but we should have won that game. We haven’t really seen a team storm back like that.

“Today was a mentality loss. We had the game. Shouldn’t have happened.”

Mitchell, the Cavs’ leading scorer, has a left knee injury. He’ll miss at least the next two games, and he could be out longer with an injury that wasn’t responding to rest.

Mitchell received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Monday. He’ll be re-examined this weekend.

Cleveland also lost Mobley, who didn’t return after spraining his left ankle with 5:29 left in the third quarter.

The Celtics were coming off a 52-point blowout of Golden State, the club’s third win by 50 or more this season. They were still comfortably up by 16 with 7:28 left, but the Cavs kept chipping away before and Wade finally put them ahead with his fifth 3.

The Kelces were on hand as the Cavs honored them with a bobblehead depicting the Cleveland-born NFL stars. Jason Kelce, who retired from the Philadelphia Eagles after 13 seasons on Monday, was presented with a No. 62 jersey.
