A familiar scent could help individuals with depression recall memories more easily than verbal cues, a recent study published in JAMA Network Open noted.

For people with major depressive disorder (MDD), a familiar smell might help them recall autobiographical memories and potentially help with mental health treatment, according to a group of researchers and social workers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Depression has been linked to issues with short-term memory, according to Healthline.

IMPROVING MEMORY MAY BE AS EASY AS POPPING A MULTIVITAMIN, STUDY FINDS: ‘PREVENTS VASCULAR DEMENTIA’

“The main takeaway from the study is that individuals with depression do have specific memories and positive memories, but they just have trouble accessing them,” study co-author Dr. Kymberly Young, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry and neuroscience researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, told Fox News Digital.

“By using odors, we can help them access these memories.”

A familiar scent could help individuals with depression recall memories more easily than verbal cues, according to a recent study. (iStock)

The findings suggest that using familiar scents in clinical settings could help to stop negative thought patterns and expedite healing, according to the report.

“Being able to access specific memories is important for problem-solving and emotion regulation — if we can help individuals with depression to access specific memories, they should be able to use them when needed and improve their quality of life,” Young said.

COVID PANDEMIC TRIGGERED SPIKE IN ANTIDEPRESSANT USE AMONG YOUNG FEMALES, STUDY FINDS

In healthy individuals, scents could trigger memories that feel vivid and “real” — likely because they engage the part of the brain called the amygdala, which plays a role in processing memory and emotional responses, according to a press release from the university.

“Memories accessed by a familiar scent tend to be very vivid, with a more intense feeling of being ‘real,’ likely due at least in part to the engagement of emotions via the amygdala,” Dr. Krystine Batcho, PhD, a licensed psychologist ad professor at Le Moyne University in Syracuse, New York, explained to Fox News Digital.

Batcho was not involved with the study.

Memories cued by scents were more specific than the ones sparked by verbal cues, the investigators found in a new study. (iStock)

As Young told Fox News Digital, anyone could use scents as a means of recalling vivid and specific memories.

“Sit with an odor and really focus on the memory and try to relive it,” Young suggested.

“Practice recalling these types of memories so that when you need to recall one in daily life — for things like problem-solving and emotion regulation — you will easily be able to do so.”

GRANDPARENTS MAY HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON A MOM’S MENTAL HEALTH, STUDY FINDS: ‘WISDOM AND EXPERIENCE’

In the study, the team of researchers looked at 32 individuals between 18 and 55 years of age who had a diagnosis of MDD.

The participants were given 12 samples of scents in opaque glass jars. They were then asked to recall a specific memory for each of 12 different words.

Each person rated the memory as positive or negative, and also rated the level of arousal and vividness. The individuals also indicated whether they thought of the memory often or not until that particular moment, according to the study.

Recalling vivid and specific memories using odors could theoretically be used by anyone to improve their memory, a researcher told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

Memories cued by odors were more specific than the ones sparked by verbal cues, the investigators found.

Participants also tended to recall more positive memories and fewer negative ones, and they rated these memories as more arousing and vivid when using odor cues compared to verbal cues.

“This study just shows that odors are effective at cuing memories when words are not,” Young said.

WAS WENDY WILLIAMS’ DEMENTIA CAUSED BY ALCOHOLISM? EXPERTS SHARE INSIGHTS

Although the investigators did not measure depressive symptoms nor expect them to change in this short study, Young noted that improving memory recall should boost problem-solving and emotion regulation and might help to alleviate depression.

“This is a future direction for this work, now that we know smells are such effective cues in these patients,” he told Fox News Digital.

Improving memory recall should improve problem-solving and emotion regulation and might improve depression, an expert said. (iStock)

Batcho, the psychologist from Le Moyne University, noted that fragrance is an especially powerful trigger for retrieving autobiographical memories.

“While verbal material is also able to retrieve memories, words function at a higher, more abstract level than sensory stimuli,” she told Fox News Digital. “Depression can trap a person in a counterproductive cycle of sadness by triggering sad memories.”

“Reliving the best times can help break the depression cycle and begin to restore more positive thoughts and feelings.”

Certain types of memories are likely to be more beneficial in alleviating depression, the expert said.

“Reliving the best times can help break the depression cycle and begin to restore more positive thoughts and feelings,” Batcho said.

“Nostalgic memories have been shown to elevate mood, buffer anxiety, counteract loneliness and strengthen social connectedness,” she went on. “Fragrances associated with positive past experiences would be the most effective in retrieving nostalgic memories.”

Specific fragrances are often associated with people, places or special occasions that bring joy, according to the expert.

“Our mother’s favorite perfume, the fragrance of flowers in the garden where we fell in love, or the aroma of holiday foods can revive the positive feelings we once enjoyed,” she said.

“It can be hard for people who are suffering from depression to remember things other than sad memories,” a psychologist told Fox News Digital.  (iStock)

Dr. Nancy Frye, PhD, a professor of psychology at Long Island University in Brookville, New York, who was not involved with the study, commented on the significance of the findings.

“It can be hard for people who are suffering from depression to remember things other than sad memories,” she told Fox News Digital.

“We’re better able to remember things that match the mood we’re currently in, according to the mood-congruent memory effect,” Frye said. “So it’s easier to remember happy memories when we’re happy, and it’s easier to remember sad memories when we’re sad.”

“This research gives a promising direction to look in to help people with depression.”

Based on this initial study, the researchers aim to complete larger studies with healthy control groups to further investigate the link between scents and memories in those with depression.

YOUNGER skin, longer hair, bigger muscles, better joints – there’s a supplement out there to tempt everyone.

But two studies last week raised concern of the hidden ingredients inside our capsules that could be a health hazard.

    1

Many of us have a stock of supplements we take regularlyCredit: Alamy

One study by Cleveland Clinic found niacin, also known as vitamin B3, may be linked with an increased risk of heart disease.

Over-the-counter supplements made with forms of niacin claim to be anti-ageing, improve blood fats, skin health, brain function and more, and it is also added to foods such as cereals.

Meanwhile, a link between high levels of thiamine – a vitamin commonly added to breakfast cereals – was made with cognitive decline, which increases the risk of dementia.

Thiamine is often added to cereals like corn flakes and frosted flakes, as well as bread and baby formulas.

Dr Carol Granger, a registered nutrition practitioner with a degree in biochemistry and a masters in microbiology, warns of many additions to supplements, medications and foods that people have no clue could be causing side effects.

For example, carrageenan may affect blood sugar levels – not ideal for those with diabetes. It’s an additive that can be used to stabilise foods like ice cream, chocolate or plant-based milk.

Dr Granger tells Sun Health: “There are a lot of nasties that should be avoided because of what they can do to you.

“I always say it’s a similar ethos to ultra-processed foods when it comes to rules about ingredients – if there are more than five listed and if you don’t know what they are, then it’s probably best you don’t buy that supplement.”

Ultra-processed foods are mostly understood to people as ‘junk food’ – far from the perception of supplements, which can contain the same additives, stabilisers, E-numbers and more.

Dr Granger says: “Ingredients like talc, E numbers, and gelatin are all used as bulking agents or as colourings and they can have serious long-term health impacts like heartburn, dizziness, fainting and severe allergic reactions.

‘World’s best new diet’ reduces belly fat and ‘slashes your risk of diabetes and stroke’ – and you can still eat bread

“I’m especially concerned about some ingredients upsetting the gut and the balance of gut bacteria because we know how this microbiome is vital for health.

“People think supplements are healthy, and while some can be, some can be as detrimental to health as ultra-processed foods when taken regularly in large amounts.”

Looking at the ‘ingredients’ lists of very common vitamins, you’ll be surprised just how often you come across these extra ingredients.

The supplement industry in the UK is worth a whopping £568 million, with hundreds of thousands on offer for various ailments.

But the Viridian Dejunk your Life Report 2024, compiled by the supplement company Viridian, highlighted dozens of questionable ingredients in mass-made supplements that can cause reactions.

“That said, supplements can be beneficial if you know what to buy,” says Dr Granger, who helped write the report.

“It’s easy to read the nutritional information but people need to read the ingredients as well.”

    Health hazards

Dr Granger revealed some of the key issues that supplements and their chemicals could contribute towards.

“There are long-term health impacts to taking bad supplements for a prolonged period of time,” she warns.

    Abdominal and digestive issues

Changes in gut bacteria can happen over time with some of these ingredients.

If you’re experiencing any kind of abdominal discomfort – from bloating to diarrhoea – you may want to have a look at the back of the box for ingredients such as those described below.

Artificial colours can exacerbate asthma in those with the condition.

    Dr Granger

Croscarmellose sodium may swell like a sponge and potentially cause intestinal blockages, while disodium phosphate may cause digestive problems including bloating and abdominal pain.

Guar gum swells when it’s ingested, which may cause obstructions in the oesophagus and small intestine, and can contribute to bloating and cramping.

Xanthan gum is linked with digestive problems including more frequent bowel movements. It’s an additive popular in gluten-free baking, but in quantities contained in food, it should not lead to side-effects.

Gelatin, also used in the kitchen, can cause bloating, heartburn, and allergic reactions.

Polydextrose may lead to gas, stomach bloating and abdominal pain and large quantities act as a laxative.

    Skin problems

Burning, stinging, rashes and irritation – you’ll want to watch out for some of the ingredients below if you’re experiencing skin problems with your pills.

Dr Granger says glyceryl dibehenate, polyvinyl-pyrrolidone and lanolin may all cause such issues.

She adds: “Methacrylic acid copolymer is a highly reactive chemical which can irritate or burn the skin and eyes and could also cause kidney damage.”

Potassium sorbate, sodium and stearyl fumarate may all irritate the eyes and skin, she warns.

And people on antibiotics and blood thinners may also want to be wary that sodium interacts with such medications.

    Allergies

People with allergies may want to check their daily supplements are not worsening their condition.

Dr Grangers says artificial colours may be added to mass market supplements, which may “exacerbate asthma in those with the condition”.

“They also worsen allergies and may be linked to hyperactivity in some children.”

All food additives, including artificial colours, have an E number, which means they’ve passed safety tests and are approved for use in the EU.

But six numbers – according to research funded by the Food Standards Agency – are linked with hyperactivity in kids; E102, E104, E110, E122, E124 and E129.

“Carmine [derived from an insect, cochineal] has been found to cause severe allergic reactions, even in small doses like those found in supplements, causing face swelling, rashes and wheezing,” says Dr Granger.

Vegans would also want to avoid it.

    Dizziness and fainting

You wouldn’t choose to eat talc. But it is “used in supplements as both an anti-caking agent and something that makes tablets white,” claims Dr Granger.

“But it’s not something humans should be ingesting in any amount,” she warned.

“It can cause a fever and less common side effects include dizziness, chest pain, fainting.”

Supplements may also become harmful if they are taken with medications that they interact negatively with.

For example, vitamin K, which the body needs in order to clot, can reduce the effectiveness of blood thinners, taken by people at risk of blood clots.

The NHS generally warns not to take more than 1mg of vitamin K per day to avoid harms.

The nasty ingredients hiding in supplements

Supplements can help us reach vitamin and mineral recommendations.

But Dr Carol Granger, a registered nutrition practitioner with a degree in biochemistry and a masters in microbiology, warns of many additions to supplements, medications and foods that could cause side effects, and suggests doing your research before buying commerical pills.

She tells Sun Health: “Ingredients like talc, E numbers, and gelatin are all used as bulking agents or as colourings and they can have serious long-term health impacts like heartburn, dizziness, fainting and severe allergic reactions.”

    Here are the worst culprits:

    Magnesium stearate

Unlike the name suggests, this ingredient contains no magnesium (which may help with sleep, anxiety and bone health).

Dr Granger says: “This is used as a lubricant – it prevents ingredients sticking together and means the machines that make the tablets don’t block.”

But she warns that “high amounts can cause a laxative effect and it can cause inflammation too, especially in those who are sensitive to allergies”.

It’s unlikely the small amount found in supplements is enough to do harm, but it may be worth reconsidering if you have been taking it for a long time.

    Ascorbyl Palmitate

Ascorbyl palmitate is a form of vitamin C made by combining ascorbic and palmitic acids.

It’s considered safe in the amounts that are used when added to skincare.

Dr Granger says: “This is used as an antioxidant food additive and preservative meaning things with it in can have a longer use by date.”

But she claims “excess amounts can cause nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting”.

    Aspartame

You’ll may be familiar with aspartame, which is a sugar-alternative often used in things like soft drinks, sweetened diet products or other ‘low/no sugar’ foods.

Dr Granger says: “This is a sweetener a lot of people have heard of.

“It’s a flavour enhancer but because it’s an artificial sweetener, it has been linked to weight gain.”

Studies have found both that sweeteners like aspartame help people lose weight, but also gain weight by potentially increasing appetite.

Several studies have linked high intakes to more serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia but there has been much debate about the results.

But Dr Granger claims: “It can affect metabolism so if you see it on any ingredient list, my advice would be to give it a wide berth.”

    Carrageenans

Carrageenan is an ingredient that has long had concern surrounding it.

Products with it may be labelled as ‘natural’ because it is derived from seaweed, therefore it is also found in some plant-based/vegan foods.

But Dr Granger says: “The processing used to make some types of carrageenan makes it into something you definitely don’t want to consume.

“They’re widely used as gelling agent and thickener. They can be used to prevent powder clumping so may be in powder supplements you add to smoothies.

“But some cause inflammation, are really bad for digestive health and have been linked to ulcers too.

“Some can also destabilise blood sugar and cause problems with blood sugar balance.”

    Calcium Phosphate

Calcium phosphate is a mineral (calcium and phosphate) which are essential for bone, muscle, blood and nerve health.

Some may benefit from additional calcium, such as menopausal women with weakening bones.

But calcium phosphate is also used as an additive to products, from supplements to toothpaste and fertilizers.

Dr Granger says: “This is used to bulk out and buffer ingredients like vitamin C.

“Side effects can include kidney problems, loss of appetite and weakness.”

We often blame allergies, skin ailments or skin sensitivity on pollution, skin care products and what not! But do you know the food you are eating can also be the silent trigger for all the skin issues you are struggling with. Read on to find out…
    Can foods cause skin issues?
Yes, this may sound strange as well as shocking but the foods you eat can also lead to skin ailments. This is due to various reasons such as their protein structure, histamine content, or presence of other allergens or additives. Here are some foods and why they may trigger skin allergies:

    Shellfish
Shellfish contain proteins that can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. These proteins may be recognized as foreign invaders by the immune system, leading to skin symptoms such as hives or itching.
    Nuts
Nuts like peanuts and tree nuts contain allergenic proteins that can cause skin reactions in susceptible individuals. These proteins may induce an immune response, resulting in symptoms such as eczema or hives.
    Cow Milk
Cow milk contains proteins like casein and whey, which can trigger allergic reactions in some people. Skin symptoms such as eczema or hives may occur due to an immune response to these proteins.

    hy1]]

    Eggs
Eggs contain proteins like Ovomucoid and ovalbumin, which are known allergens. Consumption of eggs can lead to skin reactions such as itching, hives, or eczema in allergic individuals.
    Soy
Soybeans contain proteins that can cross-react with other allergens, triggering skin allergies in sensitive individuals. Soy allergy may manifest as itching, hives, or eczema upon consumption of soy products.
    Wheat
Wheat contains proteins like gluten, which can trigger allergic reactions in some people. Skin symptoms such as hives, eczema, or dermatitis Herpetiformis may occur due to an immune response to wheat proteins.
    Fish
Certain types of fish contain allergenic proteins that can provoke skin allergies in susceptible individuals. Consumption of fish may lead to skin symptoms such as itching, hives, or eczema.
    Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds contain allergenic proteins that can induce allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Skin symptoms such as hives, itching, or contact dermatitis may occur upon exposure to sesame seeds.
    Food Additives
Certain food additives like artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives may contain allergenic compounds that can trigger skin allergies in sensitive individuals. These additives may induce an immune response, resulting in skin symptoms such as hives or itching.

Neither ingredient is listed on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, and/or coeliac disease,” the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said.

“[If this is you], do not eat it.”

The warning applies to 800g packets with a ‘best before’ date of June 30, 2025, and a barcode number of 5052449493030.

    No other batches are affected.

Customers at risk can return the product to their nearest store, where they will be given a full refund – with or without a receipt.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused,” an Asda spokesperson said.

“If you would like further information, please contact customer relations on 0800 952 0101.”

There is an alert on the supermarket’s website, signs are up in shops, and allergy support organisations have been informed.

The number of people in the UK living with a food allergy sits at around two million.

A further 600,000 have coeliac disease – a condition where the immune system attacks its own tissues when gluten is eaten.

For allergy sufferers, eating problem foods can spark reactions ranging from sneezing and dizziness to life-threatening anaphylaxis, which blocks the airways.

In serious cases, this can cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure, unconsciousness and even death.

According to the NHS, other common anaphylaxis symptoms include:

    • Swelling of your throat and tongue
    • Difficulty breathing or breathing very fast
    • Trouble swallowing, tightness in your throat or a hoarse voice
    • Wheezing, coughing or noisy breathing
    • Tiredness or confusion
    • Feeling faint, dizzy or fainting
    • Skin that feels cold to the touch
    • Blue, grey or pale skin, lips or tongue (if you have brown or black skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet)
    • Swelling of the lips, face and eyes
    • Diarrhoea
    • Nausea and/or vomiting
    • Stomach pain
    • Itchy skin or hives

When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten – found in wheat, rye, barley and oats – they often experience gut problems like:

    • Diarrhoea
    • Stomach ache
    • Bloating
    • Farting
    • Indigestion
    • Constipation

Gluten consumption can also trigger more general symptoms, such as fatigue, unintentional weight loss, an itchy rash, nerve damage, and disorders that affect coordination, balance and speech.

Potential long-term complications include infertility, osteoporosis, anaemia, and bowel cancer.

While deaths from serious food reactions have fallen in the last 20 years, around 10 people still lose their lives annually, analysis of NHS data in 2021 shows.

Hospital admissions for food-induced anaphylaxis have also risen since the late 90s.

Between 1998 and 2018, there was a three-fold increase per year, from 1.23 to 4.04 admissions per 100,000 population.

What to do if you have anaphylaxis

    1. Use an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) if you have one (instructions are included on the side of the injector).
    2. Call 999 for an ambulance and say that you think you’re having an anaphylactic reaction.
    3. Lie down – you can raise your legs, and if you’re struggling to breathe, raise your shoulders or sit up slowly (if you’re pregnant, lie on your left side).
    4. If you have been stung by an insect, try to remove the sting if it’s still in the skin.
    5. If your symptoms have not improved after five minutes, use a second adrenaline auto-injector.

Do not stand or walk at any time, even if you feel better.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has affirmed that his stage 3 tax cuts won’t stoke inflation, ahead of a fierce round of negotiations over Labor’s contentious changes.

Spruiking his new tax policy ahead of parliament’s return next week, Mr Albanese stood firm behind his decision to slash tax cuts for high-income earners to redistribute them to lower and middle-income workers, despite previously vowing not to touch the policy.

He said that his overhaul to the tax cuts won’t force the RBA to delay raising interest rates and said new figures showing a drop in inflation meant things were moving “in the right direction.”

“It is welcome and encouraging progress in the challenge of dealing with inflation, but that work continues because we know that people are still under pressure and we need to not be complacent about it,” Mr Albanese said on Wednesday.

“We need to continue to work as we have with our three point plan having the surplus, making sure we deal with cost of living pressures without putting pressure on inflation and dealing with supply chain issues as well.”

In response to weeks of heavy fire from critics, including from Liberal Leader Peter Dutton who last week said that Mr Albanese had “completely and utterly destroyed his credibility with the Australian public” after changing his mind on the cuts, Mr Albanese challenged his rival to suggest an alternative plan.

Mr Dutton has so far refused to commit to a position on the tax cuts, but told reporters on Tuesday that he would reveal the Coalition’s stance in due course.

“The truth is that there has been no criticism of any substance of our package by either the Coalition who’ve engaged in personal abuse,” the Prime Minister said.

If the Coalition opposes Labor’s tax cuts overhaul, the government will need to win over the Greens as well as two Senate crossbenchers to drive its bill through parliament.

Mr Albanese refused to answer if he would consider an increase to Jobseeker or other welfare payments in exchange for the Greens’ support for the changes.

This came after Greens leader Adam Bandt revealed this week that he would potentially back Labor’s package in exchange for concessions including a lift to welfare payments, as well as adding dental to Medicare.

“It gets you to talk about them and that’s fair enough – that’s politics,” Mr Albanese said.

“Our proposal stands on its merits and at the end of the day the minor parties as well as the Coalition have to decide if our package is better than the package that was previously there.”

The prime minister also indicated he would focus on taking his new tax bill to parliament instead of supporting a push for wide-ranging tax changes, as put forward by independent MPs including Allegra Spender.

“I have a lot of time for Allegra Spender. But of changes that we’ve put forward, she’s yet to support the PRRT changes that we’ve advanced and the changes to superannuation,” Mr Albanese said.

“What we’re focused on is what we will take to the parliament in the coming weeks.”

ARTIFICIAL Intelligence has predicted the chilling factors that could spark an apocalyptic World War Three – changing the world as we know it.

ChatGPT revealed eight horrific scenarios that could force world leaders to wage wars across the globe – leading to the deaths of millions.

The Sun gave ChatGPT a prompt and asked what could possibly lead to a third global war.

The AI – which runs on advanced machine learning – predicted eight different factors which could cause the situation to spiral out of control.

ChatGPT started its predictions by saying: “It’s important to note that this is purely speculative, and real-world events are influenced by numerous unpredictable variables.”

The clever bot added: “The goal should always be to promote peaceful resolutions and international cooperation to prevent the outbreak of global conflicts.

“In reality, the international community generally works towards diplomatic solutions and conflict prevention.”

It then, however, offered a fascinating list of factors that could contribute to the outbreak of a global conflict.

ChatGPT wrote: “In a hypothetical scenario, World War 3 could potentially start due to a combination of complex geopolitical, economic, and social factors.”

    TERRITORIAL DISPUTES

The wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the rising tensions in Korea and China are often described as territorial disputes at their core.

Over the years they have become more and more complex – but the fight over land both sides claim is theirs has grown bloody.

ChatGPT believes if these disputes over land continue to escalate it could tip the scales just enough to spark another world war – or even several around the globe.

China’s illegal claim over Taiwan is one such instance that could see sparks fly.

The communist regime could launch a full-blown invasion to absorb Taiwan into the Chinese mainland.

Beijing has already threatened to spark “uncontrolled escalation” and all-out warfare over one “misunderstanding”, as President Xi Jinping looks to stamp his authority.

The nation is feared to be a major flashpoint between the US and Beijing – with a potential invasion forcing the US to abandon the island or face a full-scale war with China, which could have devastating consequences including World War Three.

    NATIONALISM AND POPULISM

According to the ChatGPT, the rise of nationalist or populist leaders promoting aggressive foreign policies might contribute to increased tensions and breakdowns in peaceful communication.

Nationalism contributed to the major alliances in the 20th century that played a role in World War One – France and Russia felt insecure about the rise of Germany and teamed up, while the Ottoman Empire felt intimidated by Russia and ended up siding with Germany.

In the current climate, America – the world superpower – feels threatened by the rise of China, fearing it could become the next great power of the world.

This has resulted in hostile relations between the two nations which could, in a worst case scenario, turn into a major war.

Similarly, Russian insecurity around NATO – a military alliance of very powerful countries around the globe – could be dangerous.

In the increasing hostile situation, America and Europe will see themselves as allies working against regimes like North Korea, China and Russia.

ChatGPT argues that populist leaders could undermine international institutions and alliances, weakening the mechanisms in place for diplomatic resolutions and cooperation.

This can result in a lack of effective communication and collaboration, increasing the chances of misunderstandings and conflicts.

    FAILED DIPLOMACY

ChatGPT says repeated failures in diplomatic efforts to resolve international conflicts could erode trust between nations and create a hostile environment.

Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine occurred despite the West’s diplomatic efforts to stop it.

And Israel’s unprecedented attack against Hamas in Gaza escalated even after repeated efforts of international players trying to tackle the situation diplomatically.

Failed diplomacy in more vulnerable situations that involve greater risks could lead to major cross-border conflicts with millions dying across the globe.

    TECHNOLOGICAL ARMS RACE

A race for advanced military tech, such as artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons, or advanced weaponry, could lead to another arms race.

If a country thinks another’s technological advancements pose a potential threat, it could respond by increasing its own military capabilities, inadvertently escalating tensions.

The Nuclear Arms Race in the 20th century between the US and the USSR sparked the Cold War – and an apocalyptic conflict between the two superpowers almost became a reality.

ChatGPT also believes that fears of falling behind in technology might lead nations to attack each other out of fear.

    PROXY WARS

Ongoing regional conflicts where major powers are working as sponsors could escalate into broader wars, pulling more nations into the fray, the AI has warned.

According to ChatGPT, stakeholders could leverage proxy groups and other sponsors to cause major war flashpoints.

Since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war, Iran has been fostering terrorism to create conflict in the Middle East through its proxy groups such as Hezbollah and the Houthis.

This forced major world powers such as the UK and the US to join the conflict, increasing fears that the regional situation could turn into an all-out war.

    RESOURCE SCARCITY

ChatGPT suggests that intense competition for essential resources, such as water, oil, or rare minerals, could also be very dangerous.

According to the AI chatbot, conflicts over natural resources arise when different nations can’t agree about who they belong to, where they should be sent, how to protect them and how to use them.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) reports that at least 40 per cent of all intrastate conflicts (conflicts between countries) in the past 60 years have had a link to natural resources.

And the AI believes it could trigger major cross-border conflicts in the future.

    ECONOMIC TURMOIL

A severe global economic crisis would also create instability and trigger political unrest, potentially leading to conflicts as nations struggle to secure their interests, the AI bot claims.

The chatbot also argues that the prolonged economic crisis in the era of globalisation could be enough reason for nations to resort to military operations.

According to the World Economic Forum, the next big international economic crisis, such as a global recession, could well spark World War Three.

    CYBER WARFARE

ChatGPT believes that escalating cyber attacks could lead to widespread distrust and retaliation among nations, escalating into a full-scale war.

At times like these when generative AI could be easily leveraged to create widespread propaganda, cyber warfare remains one the biggest threat to world peace.

Nations engaged in ongoing conflicts could deploy intense propaganda against the rival state and could severely escalate the situation, which could attract other ally nations and turn into a major global war.

What makes cyber warfare even more dangerous is that such digital attacks don’t have to be state-sponsored – and even players not involved in conflicts could leverage propaganda warfare to spark tensions between other countries.

The ‘real’ danger of WW3 starting

WITH several ongoing world conflicts, the looming threat of nuclear warfare has sparked fears that WW3 could soon be a reality if we aren’t careful.

Former justice minister David Lametti says a Federal Court judge made a bad call when he ruled that the federal government was wrong to trigger the Emergencies Act to break up the 2022 convoy protests.

Lametti announced Thursday that he would be leaving political life on Jan. 31 after eight years as an MP — more than half of them as minister of justice and attorney general. In an interview airing Saturday on CBC Radio’s The House, he defended the government’s use of the Emergencies Act, a moment that forever marked his tenure as the country’s top legal official.

“I disagree with the decision. I disagree with [Justice Richard Mosley’s] analysis and I disagree with his framing of the issue and his treatment of the facts,” Lametti told host Catherine Cullen.

“I’m pretty confident this decision will be overturned on appeal.”

WATCH | Lametti discusses Emergencies Act decision:

Former justice minister stands by decision to invoke Emergencies Act

David Lametti disagrees with a federal judge’s ruling that actions taken under the act infringed on Charter rights.

Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley found the government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act “does not bear the hallmarks of reasonableness — justification, transparency and intelligibility,” and actions taken under the act infringed on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was quick to cite the decision and accuse Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of acting illegally.

“He caused the crisis by dividing people,” he posted on the social media platform X. “Then he violated Charter rights to illegally suppress citizens. As PM, I will unite our country for freedom.”

Lametti defended the government’s actions, saying cabinet tried to balance the rights of Canadians with the need to end weeks-long protests that dominated Canadian politics as the COVID-19 pandemic wore on in early 2022.

“I believe that we had minimal impairment of rights for a short period of time,” he said. “And what about the rights of citizens of Windsor and Ottawa and autoworkers and people in other parts of the country, in Coutts [Alta.], whose rights were being trampled on by these illegal occupations?”

WATCH | Federal government reacts to court ruling on Emergencies Act:

‘We will be appealing,’ Freeland says after court ruling on Emergencies Act

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says that she remains ‘convinced’ that invoking the Emergencies Act in early 2022 was ‘the necessary thing to do.’ A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the government’s use of the act was unreasonable.

Lametti also voiced his support for revamping the Emergencies Act to clarify the circumstances under which it can be used.

“We need to have an act that’s usable. We need to have a standard that reflects current reality,” he said.

Reason for dismissal still unknown, Lametti says

Lametti, who has represented the riding of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun since 2015, served in a variety of parliamentary secretary roles before being named minister of justice.

He was dropped from cabinet when Trudeau overhauled his team last summer — a move that caught many observers by surprise.

He said he still doesn’t know why it happened.

“I haven’t been given a substantive reason other than I got caught in a numbers game … there are a number of different balances that have to happen around the cabinet table,” he said.

Prime ministers traditionally weigh a number of factors when constructing a cabinet, including experience and regional diversity. Trudeau is also the first prime minister to insist on gender balance in his cabinets.

Lametti said he understands the need for tradeoffs in constructing a cabinet and knows he shouldn’t take such decisions personally.

A man in a suit speaks with Canadian flags in the background.

“Look, it doesn’t mean it’s not difficult…. It doesn’t mean that the decision doesn’t hurt,” he told Cullen.

“It’s up to the prime minister. It’s his prerogative.”

He said he had intended to carry on in politics at first. “But in the end, I think my mental health and my sense of happiness is also important to being an effective MP,” he said. “And I don’t think I could carry on.”

Lametti says he’s proud of his record

Lametti also reflected on some of the biggest issues he sought to address during his time as minister of justice, including delays in the justice system long enough to cause some cases to be thrown out of court.

“I appointed judges at a faster pace than anyone in Canadian history,” he said.

He leaves the department with a deadline looming on medical assistance in dying (MAID). The government has until March 17 to decide whether to allow a sunset clause to kick in, which would widen MAID eligibility to include people suffering solely from a mental illness.

Lametti said MAID is a complex, difficult issue and Canadians need to be clear-eyed about the facts.

“The sky hasn’t fallen. There are a number of horror stories that have been put out there that just haven’t materialized,” he said.

“It hasn’t been open season on the disabled. We’ve been very careful with the balancing that we have done, and I think that if we take a step back and we actually look at the facts and we look at the evidence, we’ll be able to move forward with confidence.”

Lametti said he’s proud of his work in politics and hopes it endures.

“I am going to look back at my record and say this is a great record,” he said.

“And right now, I think the most important thing to me, and the most important thing I hope to Canadians, is to maintain that record moving forward and to not put it in jeopardy with a change of government.”

Lametti will be joining the Fasken law firm, where he’ll focus on Indigenous and technology law. Radio-Canada reported Thursday that Lametti was offered the position of ambassador to Spain but turned it down.

Asked whether he’s unhappy with his treatment by the prime minister, Lametti again pointed to a number of accomplishments under his tenure, such as criminal law reform and the creation of a commission on wrongful convictions.

“I’m leaving with a smile on my face.”

A troublesome new Covid variant sweeping Britain could send cases to an all-time high, experts fear.

As many as one in 16 people were infected in London in mid-December – making it England’s worst-hit region in the run-up to Christmas.

Virus rates doubled in less than a fortnight nationally following the sudden arrival of the ‘Juno’ strain.

Warnings that worse was to come were triggered because of the busy festive social calendar, with Brits en masse attending parties and mixing indoors with loved ones.

Now virologists have claimed that January’s freezing temperatures, which has seen snow fall in parts of London, and the return of schools will only add to skyrocketing infection rates.

Exactly how prevalent Covid is currently remains a mystery due to natural delays in surveillance projects, which reflect the spread of the virus a few weeks earlier.

However, it was estimated that 4.3 per cent of people were infected across England on December 13, according to data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Office for National Statistics (ONS).

For comparison, records show prevalence peaked at 7.6 per cent in the week to April 2, 2022, driven by a surge in Omicron spin-off BA.2 and ministers ditching final Covid restrictions one month earlier.

Although Covid no longer poses the same threat as it did when it burst onto the scene in early 2020, thousands are currently in hospital with the virus every day.

And the uptick comes as NHS facilities are already juggling with a spike in flu and other seasonal bugs.

What do we know about Juno?

Juno was first spotted by the UKHSA as part of routine horizon scanning – the process of monitoring emerging infections with the potential to affect the UK.

The variant, scientifically known as JN.1, was flagged because it contained a L455S mutation in the spike protein.

This tweak is known to help the virus dodge immune protection built up from previous infection and vaccination.

It was also taking off internationally as well as in the UK, the UKHSA noted.

This led the agency to designate the strain an official variant, labelling it V-23DEC-01 – a process that means it is formally being tracked.

As of December 30, Juno was behind 64.5 per cent of the UK’s Covid cases.

For example, in the final week of 2023, norovirus and RSV hospitalisations simultaneously hit their highest levels since the pandemic began.

Professor Christina Pagel, a member of Independent SAGE and data scientist at University College London, said that infection levels in January could ‘rival’ previous peaks of infection and ‘might even exceed them’.

She told the i: ‘And BA.2 – England’s largest ever wave in March and April 2022 – peaked four weeks after it reached 50 per cent of cases.

‘So unfortunately it is likely that this JN.1 wave has not yet peaked and will peak mid-January, either next week or the week after.

‘And then infections will stay very high for a few weeks on the downward slope too.

‘I am sure this wave will rival the first two Omicron waves in 2022 and might even exceed them.’

Professor Rowland Kao, of Edinburgh University, told the i that Juno’s high prevalence is set to pile pressure on the NHS.

He urged people to be ‘extra aware’ of their contact with at-risk groups, even if they have had booster jabs.

Estimates of Covid prevalence come from a joint project ran by the UKHSA and ONS.

It swabs a sample of 30,000 people per week to work out how rife the virus is.

The current project, which began in December, took over from another mass testing scheme, which ended in March 2023.

Separate data suggests that Juno, scientifically known as JN.1, now makes up two-thirds of all new cases.

It first started spreading in the UK in October and was spotted by the UKHSA as part of routine horizon scanning — the process of monitoring emerging infections.

The variant was flagged because it contained a rogue mutation in the spike protein known to help the virus dodge the body’s internal defences.

Health experts say this makes it easier for the virus to infect the nose and throat compared to other circulating variants, which the immune system finds easier to fight off due to vaccination and previous infection.

This led the agency to designate the strain an official variant in early December, labelling it V-23DEC-01 — a process that means it is formally being tracked.

There is no evidence to suggest that Juno, as it has since been nicknamed, is more dangerous than previous strains.

Ministers have repeatedly said that they won’t resort to imposing lockdowns unless a doomsday variant appeared due to strong immunity among the population, which has been built up by repeated waves of infection and vaccine rollouts.

However, spikes in Covid cases can cause mass illness across the country, sparking chaos in schools, the health service and public transport.

There are also concerns it will fuel the number struck by long Covid — symptoms of infection that last longer than a month, such as brain fog, tiredness and headaches.

Any surge in Covid infection rates would come at a time when the NHS is already bursting at the seams due to a surge in hospitalisations due to coronavirus, flu, RSV and norovirus.

Latest UKHSA data in the week to December 31 shows Covid hospitalisations rose to 5.2 per 100,000 people in England.

The figure is up 8.3 per cent in a week and more than double the toll logged a month earlier.

However, the toll is a fraction of that logged in the same week in previous years.

The rate was twice as high last year (10.5), more than three-times higher in 2022 (18.8) and four times larger in 2021 (21.4).

This year, rates were highest in the South West (6.48), West Midlands (6) and South East (5.7).

Older age groups, who are known to be most vulnerable to the virus, logged the highest admission rate at 55.1 per 100,000.

UKHSA data also shows that flu admissions are surging.

Hospitalisations hit 6.8 per 100,000 people in England in the week to December 31, up by a third in a week and 10-times higher than one month earlier.

Levels are lower than the same week last year (12.7), which was the worst flu season for a decade as it marked the first winter without Covid restrictions since the pandemic began — allowing influenza to rapidly spread against a background of low immunity.

However, current flu admissions are three-times higher than 2018/19 and a third higher than 2017/18.

Flu hospitalisations were low in 2020/21 and 2021/22 as curbs brought in to slow the spread of the coronavirus also halted the spread of influenza.

Data from the UKHSA also shows that more Brits were hospitalised with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common bug behind coughs and sneezes, in the final week of the year compared to the same period in any other year since the pandemic began.

There were 2.2 admissions per 100,000 in the week to December 31.

For comparison, the figure is a tenth higher than last year (2) and three-times higher than 2021/22.

Separate NHS England data shows that more beds were taken up due to norovirus at the end of December than any year since Covid took off.

The winter vomiting bug saw 501 beds closed — either occupied by patients or closed for infection control purposes.

The toll is up 18 per cent on 2022, while it is 85 per cent higher than 2021 levels and eight-times higher than 2020.

For most, the stomach bug usually goes away on its own within two to three days. But in severe cases, especially among children and older adults, dehydration can lead to hospitalisations.

As the virus is spread through close contact, it can easily take off among patients hospitalised for other reasons if someone on their ward has the virus.

Experts last week warned that Brits who were sickened in recent weeks may have succumbed to two or even three viral infections at once.

Dr Chris Smith, a virologist at the University of Cambridge told BBC Look East: ‘Many of these different diseases all present in exactly the same way.

‘They tend to cause a runny nose, a sore throat, a fever some of the time — especially with flu — sometimes you get a cough as well.

‘So it can be very hard to know exactly what it is because many of these things all present the same way but they’re caused by many different infections.

‘The other bit of bad news is that you can catch lots of them at the same time. We occasionally see people who are diagnosed with two, sometimes three, viral infections simultaneously.’

He added: ‘So when we say to other people, “I had the most awful cold over Christmas”, or “over New Year”, you may well have actually succumbed to several things either all at the same time or one after another like a domino effect.

‘It has the effect of really laying you low and that’s happening a lot at the moment.’

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, an expert in infection and immunity at the University of Oxford, warned that illness rates will continue to rise throughout January.

Sir Andrew, who is also chair of the Government’s vaccine taskforce, said he expects ‘a rise in infections in the population over the course of the next week’.

He told the Mirror that it is normal for illness rates to drop over the holidays and then bounce back when people return to school and work

In response to worries that demand on hospitals will spike next week, the NHS is scrambling to boost the number of beds it has available from around 97,600 to 99,000 from January 15.

However, a further spike in hospitalisations due to the viruses will pile further pressure on hospitals in England, which are currently facing the longest strike in history by junior doctors.

The medics walked out last Wednesday and don’t return to work until 7am tomorrow. It is thought the strike will lead to more than 200,000 appointments and operations being called off.

The British Medical Association (BMA), which has coordinated the action, is demanding a 35 per cent pay rise for junior doctors, arguing that their pay has failed to keep up with inflation over the last 15 years.

The medics have already had an 8.8 per cent pay rise, on average, for 2023/24.  However, the uplift was higher for first year medics, who were given 10.3 per cent.

Junior doctors in their first year now have a basic pay of £32,300, while those with three years’ experience make £43,900. The most senior earn £63,100.

Last month, officials offered the medics an additional three per cent rise. However, the BMA turned down the offer and pressed ahead with further strike action.

It comes as the Prime Minister today admitted that he has not done enough to bring down the record 7.7million NHS backlog.

Rishi Sunak pledged to reduce the number waiting for care over the course of 2023. However, the toll increased by around 500,000.

Speaking at a PM Connect event in the North West today, he said: ‘We have to be frank. Although we’ve virtually eliminated the people waiting the longest, we haven’t yet made a significant enough dent in the waiting lists.’

He said industrial action was partly to blame.

Mr Sunak said that ‘while we’re waiting to resolve that, we’re getting on doing the things that will strengthen our NHS for the long term’, including training ‘considerably’ more doctors and nurses, and raising ‘our first smoke-free generation to ease those pressures’.

AN amber cold health alert has been issued for parts of England.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned that the dip in temperature could increase the risk of “heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections”.

It comes as snow has fallen in parts of the UK, as the country braces for a week-long cold spell.

The Met Office and UKHSA say the North West of England, West Midlands, East Midlands and South West will experience chillier conditions from Sunday (yesterday) until 12pm on Monday.

Vulnerable people, including those aged 65 plus and Brits with underlying health conditions, are most at risk.

Hospitals and GP surgeries will “likely” be busier than normal for an “extended” period as demand increases, which can have a knock-on effect on the “whole population.”

Dr Agostinho Sousa, of the UKHSA, stressed the importance of checking on those who could be vulnerable.

She said: “Cold weather can increase the risks of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections so that it can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with pre-existing health conditions.

“Temperatures are expected to turn particularly cold overnight, as expected at this time of year.

“If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over 65 it is important to try and heat the rooms where you spend most of your time, such as your living room or bedroom, in the coming days.”

Temperatures are expected to drop heavily on Monday (today) night.

The Met Office said parts of England and Wales could reach -4C, while northern Scotland could see temperatures as low as -7C.

It comes after Storm Henk had claimed its second victim after a woman and man were killed in separate crashes on Tuesday.

Yellow alerts, which cover the North East, East of England, London, and the South East, are valid for the same period.

This means, “significant impacts are possible across the health and social care sector due to forecast weather conditions”.

How to keep warm at home

YOU should heat your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you.

Low indoor temperatures can have a serious impact on your health, especially if you have medical conditions or are older.

Simple changes can help to keep you and your home warm:

    • Try to heat rooms you spend a lot of time in, such as the living room or bedroom, to at least 18C
    • Try to reduce draughts; you can fit draft excluders around doors cheaply
    • Keep your bedroom windows closed at night
    • Wear several layers of thinner clothing; this could keep you warmer than one thicker layer.

You should also try not to sit still for more than an hour or so and stretch your limbs regularly.

It is also important to get vaccinated to help reduce your risk of respiratory illnesses, to treat minor ailments like sore throats and colds quickly, and to call NHS 111 or 999 in an emergency if you need to.

Brown said retailers would also be waiting to see if the federal budget in May contains any measures like tax cuts to encourage consumer spending, or measures for the business sector to promote co-investment between government and industry in areas such as artificial intelligence or sustainability.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has signalled that providing cost-of-living relief to Australians is high on his agenda for 2024.

“We asked [the departments of Treasury and Finance] to give consideration to … the measures that can take pressure off families on cost of living without putting pressure on inflation,” Albanese said last Wednesday.

“That’s the key issue here: if you were just to distribute additional cash to people, you potentially make inflation worse and therefore don’t help to solve the problem.”

Retailers discounted earlier and more heavily during November, December and the start of January as Australians cashed in on their loyalty points and waited for deals to do their shopping.

Data from financial services agency Square showed a 29 per cent increase in transactions between Black Friday (November 24) and December 31 compared to the same period in 2022, as well as a similar increase at restaurant spending.

While Australians flocked to physical stores to do their shopping, they were also willing to make large purchases online, with the average digital purchase nearly four times bigger than the typical in-store spend.

E-commerce players and retailers are expected to perform well this year, with online sales growth far outstripping sales growth at bricks-and-mortar stores. Morningstar analyst Johannes Faul observed a structural return to e-commerce, which rocketed during the pandemic but dropped after lockdowns ended.

“As this structural shift marches on, retailers with greater online exposure should take market share,” Faul said in a recent industry pulse report.

“We expect online penetration of Australian retail sales to increase by around 0.5 per cent per year over the next decade. This would see e-commerce accounting for around 18 per cent of all retail sales by 2033, up from 13 per cent in fiscal 2023.”

Christmas and Boxing Day deals were twice as good in 2023 than the previous year, with Square data showing the average discount was 42 per cent, up from 21 per cent in 2022.

While some experts don’t believe retailers can sustain deep discounts and sacrifice their margins for much longer, Brown believes businesses will be responsive to the consumer.

“Retailers will do what they need to do to get through,” she said. “If Aussies are focused on a bargain, retailers will deliver that for them.”
