    The Christmas lights at night are big and bright all across Texas this season, whether at community events or self-guided tours through lavishly decorated neighborhoods. Sure, you can get your fix in Houston, but there are also lights and Christmas trees to see elsewhere if you’re willing to drive a bit, or are already traveling to see friends and family. Here are 12 holiday events and light displays for wherever you might be in the Lone Star State this season.

    The Houston Botanic Garden is beautiful year-round, but it’s getting a little brighter during the holidays for the second year of Lightscape. The garden path is lined with lighted installations from artists all over the world. Making its debut this year is Texas-exclusive installation “Bluebonnets,” a field of 2,000 flowers made with LED pixel lighting.

    Houston Space Center brings the galaxy within reach with its yearly holiday event, which includes interactive displays, a light tunnel, and educational experiences for the space-obsessed kids (and adults). New this year is the Deep Space Backyard, where you can walk under the stars and see huge displays of astronauts exploring space.

    The Texas capital transforms Zilker Park into a holiday wonderland every year, bringing out more than 2 million lights, 90 lighted holiday trees and more than 70 other displays. This year also marks a return to its traditional walk-through format after two years of the drive-thru version. Be sure to pick up some kettle corn and visit the giant Zilker Holiday Tree after.

    Aggieland’s holiday celebration goes big, with 4 million lights spanning 130 acres. General admission tickets include a hayride through the lights, but private horse-drawn carriages are also available. Kids can visit with the Clauses and drop off letters to the North Pole at Santa’s Station. At Santa’s Farm, you’ll find ice skating; a “playground” space to play in actual snow; a walkable trail of lights; the West Pole Express, a lights-covered Texas Christmas Train; a petting zoo, and more. Warm up and enjoy s’mores at the West Pole roasting pits at the night’s end.

    Fredericksburg puts its German heritage on display for Christmas in its Marktplatz. Shop for the friends and family on your list, listen to an audio presentation about the city’s German history, and see a nightly lighting of the community Christmas tree and the German Christmas Pyramid—a 26-foot-tall wooden pyramid that was crafted in Germany in 2009, specifically for Fredericksburg.

    Just because there isn’t snow at the beach doesn’t mean Galveston can’t celebrate Christmas with the best of them. Moody Gardens is back with its yearly Festival of Lights with 2 million bulbs along a mile-long trail, as well as the underwater-themed ice sculpture experience, ICE LAND: A Caribbean Christmas. Elsewhere, the Galveston Railroad Museum’s immersive train experience to the North Pole, The Polar Express Train Ride, runs through Dec. 23, and history and architecture buffs can enjoy the island’s Victorian architecture on The East End Historical District’s Victorian Christmas Homes Tour, which takes place on Dec. 2.

    Grapevine calls itself the Christmas Capital of Texas, and there’s probably something for everyone while the North Texas town puts on 1,400 Christmas events in 40 days. The Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine is a big draw for holiday goers, where the yearly interactive ice sculpture exhibit ICE! takes place, which includes 2 million pounds of carved, colorful ice and an ice slide. This year’s theme: The Polar Express.

    Once the home of Lyndon B. Johnson, Johnson City knows how to put on a holiday display. The Pedernales Electric Cooperative illuminates its Johnson City Headquarters with more than 1.3 million LED bulbs, which makes the town so bright, NASA has reported seeing it from the International Space Station. You can walk or drive through downtown Johnson City to enjoy the lights, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride.

    Driving through Santa’s Ranch at Christmastime is a holiday tradition in New Braunfels, where more than 1.5 million lights twinkle bright. Tickets give visitors access to concession stands, full of treats and hot cocoa, as well as a series of festive displays. They cost $35 per vehicle, with a season pass for $70.

    For those headed west this season, Odessa has the largest display of lights in the Permian Basin. Walk or drive through McKinney Park and see holiday displays and more than 300,000 lights. It all kicks off with a tree lighting celebration on Dec. 1, featuring local school choirs there to perform.

    The San Antonio River Walk is an iconic Texas destination throughout the year, but at Christmastime, 2,250 strings of light are draped across the river. From Dec. 1 to 23, the river also plays host to the boat carolers: Boats can be rented for an hour for those with the singing pipes for caroling. Those who prefer to listen can enjoy from the River Walk banks or its restaurant patios.

    Chip and Joanna Gaines’ mecca for “Fixer Upper” fans gets the Christmas treatment for their annual event. You can get some Christmas shopping done, and Santa will be there every Friday and Saturday to hear Christmas wishes and take photos. On Dec. 7, the Waco Community Band and the Baylor VirtuOSO and Jazz Ensemble will perform as part of “A Very Merry Evening” benefiting Waco nonprofit The Cove.
