They’ve been perhaps this year’s least confrontational Block couple – but it seems even Rachel and Ryan couldn’t make it to the end of the season without at least one on-air dust-up.
There were tense scenes during Tuesday’s episode of the reno show when Ryan delivered a key update about his progress finishing the outside of their house during a sit-down interview.
Unfortunately, the update was also news to his wife, who was immediately furious that she wasn’t involved in the decision-making process.
Speaking to an off-camera producer, Ryan revealed that he and the team had that day decided not to go ahead with building part of their house’s wraparound deck.
“We actually deleted a part of the deck. We’re going to fill the ground, all the way up to the door, with crushed rock instead of a deck. I think it’ll be …” he began.
“News to me,” Rachel interjected. “News to me that that is happening.”
“Oh, OK. Well it’s happening,” he told her – but Rachel wasn’t letting it go.
“Where was I? Painting all day, non-stop on a scissor lift. Who decided this? It’s you and I that are the contestants, so who decided this?”
“I don’t know. It was a common agreement. We’ll talk about it later,” Ryan shrugged, clearly eager for the argument not to play out on-camera.
As Rachel continued to ask for an explanation, he told her to “just calm down and relax” – which didn’t go down well.
“Excuse me? It’s been 12 weeks of me saying ‘Stop making decisions without me.’ I wasn’t even consulted, and you’re talking to me like I’ve done something wrong here. You’re talking to me aggressively (when) I wasn’t part of the conversation.”
She ended the confrontation by suggesting she’d be going out for dinner than night with their closest friends on The Block, Tom and Sarah-Jane – and leaving Ryan behind.
Seems it’s going to be a drama-filled race to the finish line ahead of The Block auctions next weekend, with controversial couple Sharon and Ankur slamming their treatment on the show during an explosive radio interview on Tuesday.
In a live radio interview with Hit NSW Breakfast radio show Maz & Matty, Ankur revealed their portrayal in Monday night’s episode had been the final straw in his relationship with those making the show.
During the episode, foreman Keith had asked why Ankur had not been more across his budget, given his day job as an accountant – a question to which both Sharon and Ankur took great offence.
Speaking on radio, Ankur said he was “angry” about the run-in, arguing other contestants who work in construction and plumbing haven’t had their qualifications brought into question when their houses had issues in those areas.
Calling the confrontation a “tipping point,” Ankur said that he and Sharon had “definitely checked out of (their) relationship” with the team behind The Block.
Sharon also railed against her portrayal on the show, suggesting The Block was using her previous work as an actor to portray her in a negative light.
“Always referring to me as ‘actress Sharon’ instead of just ‘Sharon’. They don’t say ‘social worker Sarah-Jane.’ We’re in week 11, and just annoyed with the set-ups and the storylines,” she said.
