The English city that tourists can’t stop comparing to Venice

TOURISTS have been comparing a pretty city in England to Venice.

The UK city is home to quaint canals and waterways as well as a bunch of Italian restaurants and delis.

Cambridge in eastern England has been likened to Venice for many years.

While both are home to a network of canals, they also share an important bridge.

Cambridge’s Bride of Sighs, resembling its Venetian namesake, was designed by English architect Henry Hutchinson and constructed in 1831.

Brit holidaymakers who want the best views of the Italian-inspired bridge should take to the water.

While Venice, a city built on 118 islands, is known for its gondolas, Cambridge also has its very own version.

Punts (small flat-bottomed boats) can be found on canals and rivers across the city.

While gondoliers in Venice use an oar to move the gondola through the water, punts are pushed through the water by a quant pole.

And in recent years, holidaymakers have taken to social media to compare the two activities.

TikTok user, Iviè Milan posted a video all about the “Venice of the UK”.

In the video, she said: “This is your sign to go punting in Cambridge before it gets too crowded this summer.

“You get Venice vibes for a fraction of the price, and can even rent out your own punts and go around the River Cam yourself.”

Day-trippers have also taken to TripAdvisor to rave about the similarities.

One person wrote: “Punting on the river Cam is the best thing that Cambridge has to offer, and it really feels like a Venetian gondola.”

Guided punt tours along the backs of the college waterways start from £34 per boat.

Beyond the waterways, there’s also an abundance of restaurants and delis in Cambridge that all serve authentic Italian food.

A stone’s throw away from King’s College, there’s Aromi – an independent Sicilian bakery with three locations.

Make sure to try the gelato con brioche from the Peas Hill branch.

Further afield, and closer to Cambridge train station, lie two of Cambridge’s best Italian restaurants.

Al Pomodoro on Hills Road is a family-run restaurant serving wood-fired pizzas, sumptuous pasta dishes, and authentic Italian cocktails.

Meanwhile on the other side of the station is Limencello – Cambridge’s fifth best restaurant according to TripAdvisor.

Tucked among the tables and chairs at the front of the restaurant is a small deli that sells sweet treats, packets of pasta, and jars of sauce.

As well as being able to stock up on Italian groceries, their fresh pasta dishes are a must.

Beyond its connections to Italy, there are other things to do in Cambridge like the botanical garden, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and King’s College Chapel.

Cambridge is a 60-minute train journey away from Central London, and we’ve found return tickets for £25.80 for a full-paying adult.

And this isn’t the only place in the UK that’s been compared to Venice.

Portmeirion village in Gwynedd has been compared to the Italian Riviera because of its al-fresco dining areas and colourful buildings.

While a tiny town in Scotland has been compared to a stunning Italian island thanks to its bright buildings.

Here are some other UK spots that look like they could be abroad.
