Top things to do in Napa, CA if you’re not a wine drinker

When planning what to do in Napa Valley, it’s hard not to think about a getaway filled with wine tasting — but there’s much more to this sought-after stretch of Northern California than just award-winning wine. From cooking lessons and art to live music and parks that will inspire you to spend more time in the great outdoors, there’s a long list of things to do in Napa Valley that have nothing to do with wine.

Ready to go? Pack your sense of adventure and a comfortable pair of shoes, because there’s a ton of ground to cover. From Napa to Calistoga, here are our top suggestions on what to do in Napa Valley, city by city.

Stellar vino tends to attract equally noteworthy food, and though everyone may not fancy wine, we can all appreciate delicious meals. Learn how to create gourmet dining experiences at home from the pros at The CIA at Copia, The Culinary Institute of America’s wine country hub in downtown Napa. There’s something for every skill set here: Offerings range from multi-day culinary boot camps to hands-on cooking classes and family-friendly experiences. If you’d prefer to let the pros do the work, you can sit back and enjoy a meal at The Grove at Copia, the Institute’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in downtown Napa, or pick up lunch from the Lunch Box at Copia. (And if you do happen to be into wine, don’t worry: They, of course, have a wine bar.)

After class you can pick up some new kitchen tools at the Marketplace at Copia, or marvel at historic cookwear at the Chuck Williams Culinary Arts Museum. (Williams was the founder of Williams Sonoma.)

Celebrate your culinary prowess with a show at Blue Note Napa, a live music and jazz club located on the first floor of the Napa Valley Opera House. Performers include need-to-know local artists like Kellie Fuller along with national stars like Macy Gray and Peabo Bryson. It’s also worth checking the line-up at within-walking-distance Uptown Theatre Napa. Dating back to 1937, the restored art deco venue hosts comedy and musical performances.

    Things to do in Yountville

It may have a small-town feel, but Yountville delivers big when it comes to wine country experiences.

You have to roll out of bed early, but a hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley is one of those experiences you’ll be talking about long after finding your way back home. Most mornings, Napa Valley Aloft balloons launch steps outside of the V Marketplace on Washington Street, Yountville’s main drag. Depending on the weather, fliers may catch a glimpse of the San Francisco skyline along with acres of vineyards. Launches take place just after dawn; dress in layers you can peel off as temperatures rise.

Once back on solid ground, stretch your legs while admiring a one-of-a-kind collection of outdoor public art. The Yountville Art Walk includes approximately 35 sculptures; some are permanent while others are for sale. Weekends during mustard season (Feb.-March), you can search for signed and numbered glass hearts created by Napa Valley glass artist Patti Wessman. They will be hidden in plain sight along the Art Walk for visitors to find and keep.

At some point during your walk you’ll pass by The French Laundry’s culinary garden. This immaculate 3.5-acre garden is the main source of vegetables, herbs and flowers for the famed Michelin-starred restaurant. The garden also supplies chef Thomas Keller’s collection of other restaurants in Yountville.

    Things to do in Oakville

Founded in 1881, Oakville Grocery is reportedly the oldest continually operating grocery store in California, tucked in this sweet little town. As of last count, Oakville itself has only about 100 people, so there’s not much to see here beyond the grocery store — unless you’re into wine tasting, in which case there are several incredible options nearby. Still, Oakville Grocery is considered such a Napa landmark, with a tasty menu, that it’s well worth the visit. Pick up breakfast, a sandwich or wood-fired pizza, or put together a gourmet picnic. Not hungry? An assortment of housewares and edible products make for great gifts and souvenirs.

Things to do in St. Helena

A stroll down St. Helena’s Main Street delivers a myriad of treats like chocolate caramels from Woodhouse Chocolate and English muffins from The Model Bakery (which have been featured on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list four times). Shopping enthusiasts could easily spend a few hours enjoying this bustling shop- and restaurant-lined stretch.

For an unexpected taste of wine country, make the quick and easy five-or-so-minute drive towards the town of Calistoga to Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park, which sits right smack between the two towns. Hidden in plain view alongside St. Helena Highway, the mill’s water wheel is one of just a handful that are still functioning in the United States. (Bale Grist Mill is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and protected as a State Historical Landmark.) Built in 1846, the park is technically only open on weekends (closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day), although trails make it easy to walk up to the Mill and look from the outside any day of the week. If you can make the trip during the weekend, you can catch historic tours and see the 36-foot water wheel in action, as a miller demonstrates how grains are ground into flour and meals.

The History Trail connects Bale Grist Mill to neighboring Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. The moderate, 2.3 mile roundtrip trail passes the Pioneer Cemetery and The White Church, believed to be the first church in Napa Valley. Read here for a brief description of other hikes in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park.

    Things to do in Calistoga

Geothermal hot springs made Calistoga famous more than 150 years ago. Since then, a plethora of spas and hotels have sprung up in the northernmost tip of Napa Valley.

A number of resort properties boast geothermal mineral pools, but Indian Springs’ main pool is arguably the most dazzling. Built in 1913, the Olympic-sized mineral pool is fed by on-site geysers. The water temperature ranges from approximately 92 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. There’s also a smaller, more intimate adults-only pool with water about 10 degrees cooler.

Indian Springs overnight guests have unlimited access to the thermal pools. A limited number of pool passes are often available for purchase by day guests who have booked a 50-minute treatment.

If you truly want to dig into Calistoga’s unique wellness offerings, you have to get dirty. Used by native Wappo Indians, mud baths are now offered at spas throughout town, with husband-and-wife team John “Doc” and Edy Wilkinson credited with introducing the concept to wellness seekers visiting Napa Valley. In 1952, the couple’s hot springs resort began offering therapeutic mud baths using a recipe of volcanic ash, hot spring water, peat moss and other secret ingredients. Though purposely getting filthy may not seem relaxing, 70 years later the funky but fabulous treatment is still sought after.

The spa at Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs just emerged from an extensive remodel, but the mud baths and the zen-inducing state haven’t changed. Willingly sinking your body into a steamy vat of thick, wet dirt for a a wine country experience you’ll never forget.
