Two artists on one pad in Dublin 3

34 Vernon Gardens, Clontarf, Dublin 3

    Asking price: €895,000 Agent: DNG (01) 833 1802

Not many people can brag that two professional artists helped them design their home. However, Sinéad Dennis was able to call on the creative skills of her aunt, the well-known artist and DJ Mo Kelly, as well as her mum, the photographer and artist Síle Dennis.

This colourful sister act has heavily influenced the look of her period seaside home in Clontarf.

She and husband Thomas Loumaigne bought their home in need of renovation when they decided to settle down.

Back when Dennis finished an arts degree in French and Economics but later started working in advertising, she really thought she’d never use her French again. Until she met a French man on the dance floor of the Black Door nightclub in Harcourt Street, Dublin at 3am one night. “It was Valentine’s Day. He was from Bordeaux and was here on holidays.”

He asked for her number but she mistakenly left out a digit. “When I didn’t hear from him immediately, I thought OK. That’s grand. Then about five days later I got a text saying: ‘Sinéad?’ He works as a lead developer in an IT security company and had worked out the 10 numbers that it could have been.” Dennis is not only using her French daily but now married to Thomas and they have two children, two-year-old Cora, and Tedh (1). “I feel very lucky because it was one of those ‘right time, right places’ sort of things,” she says.

In that time, they bought and renovated 36 Vernon Gardens, Clontarf, a three-bedroom, 1421 sq ft semi detached property near the sea in Clontarf. The 1930s house was in bad repair when they got it in 2018. “There was a galley kitchen with a formal room at the front and a small dining room at the back. Nothing had been done to it for at least 40 years,” explains Sinéad.

They called in Denali Builders and also hired interior architect Clodagh Barry. “Clodagh did some drawings for us of ideas we had about how to open up the house. We planned to extend it at the back as much as we could do without planning permission and create a space in which to entertain which would be filled with light.”

A big open-plan L-shaped kitchen/living/dining room was developed at the back. The kitchen counters are made of quartz and there’s a large island in the middle. The room benefits from two big roof windows and sliding glass doors leading to the garden in the living area, which houses a large couch and has floor-to-ceiling shelves on one side.

A narrow hall at the front of the house now leads into the open-plan room, with the stairs coming into the dining area. The galley kitchen has been turned into a downstairs wc and utility room. The formal room at the front of the house has the original fireplace. The three bedrooms are upstairs — two of these are doubles, and there’s also a bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Sinéad chose the colours on the advice of mum Síle and also her aunt Mo. Mo has DJed in Ibiza and Dubai where she’s had residencies and her paintings have been exhibited around the world.

“I wanted to add colour and personality to the house, but I thought bold colours would make the rooms smaller. I sat with Mo, and we talked it through. She explained that if you use the right tone it can work. She brought in swatches, and we examined the light in the rooms.”

The result is an effective use of bold colours throughout the house.

The living room at the front for example is painted green, while the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room is painted different shades of navy, and the downstairs bathroom is bright yellow.

Various paintings and prints also add colour. “There’s a few of Mo Kelly’s paintings, one from my 30th birthday and another which she gave me for my wedding. I have some of my mother’s paintings there too.”

The house comes with a B3 BER-rating. They installed parquet-style tiles on the floor and added underfloor heating.

They’ve done a lot of work on the 80 ft long back garden which faces northwest. “We started off by painting the walls. Then we added a pergola and couches, and behind that we created a boule pitch. The French are gas. They will have one drink over four hours and stand around that pitch playing boules.”

The garden was their sanctuary during the lockdowns. “It was a godsend as it allowed us to entertain outside.” They’ve installed a shed at the back which they use for remote working.

Sinéad is from Clontarf and loves it. “It’s close to the sea which is important for Thomas as he likes to surf, and it’s also close to Dublin Airport.” It’s also just a three-minute walk away from Clontarf village.

“Our neighbours have a WhatsApp group and organise street parties in the summer and a New Year’s Eve party every year,” she says. “And the road really comes alive at Christmas as they put lights up on all the houses. It’s incredible when it’s all lit up.”

The couple now plan to buy another house in Clontarf which they can also do up. “We loved the challenge as I’m quite creative and my husband is handy. We’ve done as much as we can to this house, and it feels like the right time to sell.

“We’re aware that we’ve very lucky to be able to buy this house and to live in Clontarf,” she adds. “Now we hope to sell our turn-key home to someone who will love it as much as we do.” DNG seeks €895,000 on their behalf.
