Pop-up restaurants and film screenings we’re all familiar with, but pop-up hotels? Salt House Nantucket in Massachusetts has big, big plans but is soft-launching with an elegant 18-room B&B now. The design harks back to the coastal inns of the 17th century but through an understatedly luxurious 21st century lens.
ue to New England’s frigid winters, Salt House – located on a small island off Cape Cod, adjacent to the fabled Martha’s Vineyard, and accessible by a two-hour ferry – is only open for summer seasons and will launch proper in 2023 with an exclusive members club, additional guest rooms, a communal barn-style lobby and lounge, and a swimming pool.
In the meantime though, it’s a case of propping up the old feet on an adirondack or rocking chair on one of the porches with a thirst-quenching cocktail after a day spent schlepping around the island’s beaches, boutiques, bars, breweries, restaurants and historic lighthouses. ● Anyone being smart and frugal by deferring their holiday until after the summer rush could be tempted by Click&Go’s September package to the four-star Vitor’s Plaza Aparthotel in Portugal’s Algarve: €379 for seven nights per person based on two sharing a self-catering apartment.
It’s based in Alvor, one of the Algarve’s more chilled coastal resorts, with contemporary, low-rise accommodation overlooking large, palm-fringed swimming pools. Price includes return flights from Dublin, airport taxes and charges.
● On home turf, the scenic Wicklow Escape near Donard, Co Wicklow, south of Blessington, has rolled out a series of Sunday at the Escape afternoon feasts in its outdoor pavilion, where a flame-cooked open kitchen chars the likes of free-range chicken with fire-roasted tomatoes, Hasselback potatoes and handmade pizza, commandeered by Mexican chef Francisco Ramirez Murga.
Other lip-smackers include Wagyu burgers, chimichurri, and house slaw, many with ingredients from around the region – some plucked from the lodge’s own kitchen garden.
The pavilion is, happily, under canvas and has a tranche of electric heaters should the season prove less than clement. Every Sunday from 1pm until 5pm through until September inclusive, with live music and a capacity of up to 50 diners.
